From Yahoo News: It looks like North Korea is in the process of shutting down its nuclear facilities.
After tortuous negotiations and delays — during which the North argued its nuclear program was needed for self-defense — the reclusive regime said earlier this month that once it received the oil shipment, it would consider halting its reactor.
The 10-member IAEA team arrived in the North Korean capital Saturday afternoon. Team chief Adel Tolba said the inspectors would stay in North Korea as long as needed to complete their work at the Yongbyon plutonium-producing reactor, located about 60 miles northeast of Pyongyang.
- The United States announced Saturday it learned that North Korea has shut down its Yongbyon nuclear facilities, and said it now hopes for “rapid progress” toward Pyongyang’s nuclear disarmament.
The shutdown is the North’s first step in nearly five years toward de-nuclearization.
Pyongyang will eventually get 1 million tons of oil and other financial and political concessions in the deal with the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia.
State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack said Saturday, the United States, together with all the partners in the six-party talks on Pyongyang’s nuclear program — the two Koreas, Japan, China and Russia look forward further progress.
North Korea’s military proposed Friday holding direct talks with U.S. forces, an unusual plea amid recent progress on the nuclear standoff between the two countries.
The North’s Korean Peoples Army proposed the talks, also be attended by a U.N. representative, “for the purpose of discussing the issues related to ensuring the peace and security on the Korean peninsula,” the chief of the North Korean military’s mission at the truce village of Panmunjom said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
The plea comes amid rising hopes for a peace treaty to replace the 54-year-old Korean War armistice in light of progress on the nuclear issue.
Now, last I heard, North Korea was 1/3 of the “Axis of Evil”, and here it is, shutting down its nuclear facilities, and asking for peace talks, without a single shot being fired.
So, what’s all this about George Bush being a miserable failure?

I know this is old, but I decided to check on our old friend, Subservient Chicken.
My nine year old reminded me of him, this morning, “Hey whatever happened to that chicken that does what you tell him to?”.
I discovered him years ago, through Jonah Goldberg, at the Corner. I remember at first being completely freaked out by it. (Burger King pays some guy to dress up in a chicken costume, sit in that small living room, and perform tricks for internet users?!)
Well, he’s still there, alone in that room, (wearing garters?) ready to perform for us.
He gets a little confused, nowadays. I asked him to rub his sides, and he rolled on the floor.
But he’s still a star, in my eyes.
