At first I thought, maybe I was taking the headline too literally…’surely they mean that 23% of those polled, were of the opinion that his stature as a visionary, and dogged hero was mythlike….’ But noooooo, they don’t believe that the man actually existed at all, according to this study:
Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real.
The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth.
And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist.
Three percent thought Charles Dickens, one of Britain’s most famous writers, is a work of fiction himself.
Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi and Battle of Waterloo victor the Duke of Wellington also appeared in the top 10 of people thought to be myths.
Meanwhile, 58 percent thought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective Holmes actually existed; 33 percent thought the same of W. E. Johns’ fictional pilot and adventurer Biggles.
UKTV Gold television surveyed 3,000 people.
This is what happens when the wrong sorts of people (Libs) control the school curriculum.
Winston Churchill is no longer even mentioned in the history books; he’s been removed to make room for nanny state favorites:
Secondary schools will strip back the traditional curriculum in favour of lessons on debt management, the environment and healthy eating, ministers revealed.
Even Winston Churchill no longer merits a mention after a drastic slimming-down of the syllabus to create more space for “modern” issues.
Along with Hitler, Gandhi, Stalin and Martin Luther King, the former prime minister has been dropped from a list of key figures to be mentioned in history teaching.
This means pupils may no longer hear about his stirring speeches during the Second World War, when he told Parliament that defeating Hitler would be Britain’s “finest hour”.
Blogger Betsy Newmark, a history teacher herself wrote about this unfortunate state of affairs last July:
How can you even imagine teaching British history to British students and strip Churchill from the curriculum? Is the goal of these educators to destroy any pride at all that children might develop in their country’s history?
Sadly, I think she may be on to something.
UPDATE:
S Weasel answers Betsy’s question:
Oh, she’s not ‘on to something’ — they’ve specifically said that’s the aim.
New study: Patriotism lessons could be introduced to foster nation pride but teachers think it could exclude non-British pupils
“Moral failings” in Britain’s past mean pupils should not be taught patriotism, teachers said in a survey.
Nearly 90 per cent opposed plans for history and citizenship lessons aimed at fostering national identity and pride.
That’s from The Daily Mail (which, I’m ashamed to admit, has become my favorite UK news source. It’s tabloidy as all hell).
That’t the lesson that the European Left took away from their own incredible 20th Century fields of slaughter: that the World Wars were all about nationalism and pride. When they say “never again” they mean “never again will we favor our country or way of life over another, for that is how wars begin.”
Always edifying Nick weighs in, as well:
…what they are doing is by design. The government wants to destroy all sense of nationalism to facilitate acceptance of the EU and one world government. You cannot subjugate a nation’s people by teaching them the lessons of the past.Beware, it is happening here too. The difference is, since it is unconstitutional, it is being done incrementally without consent of the people.
