Huckabee: I Don’t Want To Be V.P.

I think we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Huck, appearing on Meet The Press, this morning, was asked by Tim Russert, “How does being Vice President sound”? Huckabee answered that it was an office no one would refuse, but also one that he doesn’t want or expect:

”No I really don’t,” the former Arkansas governor said when asked if he wanted to be vice president — assuming that Republican front-runner Sen. John McCain won the November election.

“I’m not going to be asked. It’s pretty evident that there would be a whole lot of people on the list long before me and one of them would say yes,” he added.

Now for some of that famous Huckster modesty… he went on to say, the question he should be asked is:

“Would I ask John McCain to be my running mate?”

“I still think I can get there,” he added.

Well, he did have that stunning win in Kansas, yesterday:

Huckabee pulled in 60 percent of the vote, compared to 24 percent for U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona and 11 percent for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.

Kris Kobach, state GOP chairman, said the result in Kansas should be viewed as a message to the McCain campaign.

“It sends a pretty significant signal to John McCain that he’s got a lot of work to do to get significant factions of the Republican Party solidly behind him,” Kobach said.

Kobach had endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who suspended his campaign on Thursday.

Actually, Romney had appointed  immigration expert, and amnesty foe, Kobach to be his adviser on immigration in stark contrast to McCain’s appointment of Juan Hernandez.

McCain could go a very long way towards reconciling with conservatives if he let Hernandez go, and picked up Kobach as his Immigration Adviser, not that that has any chance of happening. *

Huckabee also squeaked out a win in Louisiana, and lost in Washington state.

He hinted on Meet The Press that he may contest the Washington results:**

“We’re looking at some legal issues. We’re not ready to concede that one,” Huckabee said, without going into specifics.

I think he really is serious about not wanting that V.P. slot.

*UPDATE:

There is a consensus  emerging among conservatives that McCain needs a majority of us to win, and he is going to have to make some policy changes in order to placate the base. Firing Hernandez is at the top of the wish list.

SeeDubya at JYB says if McCain is an honorable man, and if his number one priority is to win the war, then he will make the changes necessary to win over conservatives. Because it can’t be done without us.

If McCain did decide to unload Hernandez, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t replace him with someone as controversial as Kobach.

**UPDATE:

Stop the ACLU has more on the questionable Washington vote count.

When Freddy dropped out, I thought if McCain ended up with the nomination, he would choose Fred as VP for sure. However I haven’t heard one mention of that possibility.

I know they’re good friends, Fred is from a southern state and he seems to have more conservative bona fides than McCain.

It would still be a good choice because it would have the effect of potentially placating conservatives while still allowing McCain to maintain the appearance that’s he’s not pandering to conservatives since Fred is his BFF.

And you know…God forbid McCain appear to make a geniune attempt to shore up the conservative base for no other reason than he needs them to win.

Hey Huck! I don’t want you to be VP either. Or President. I just want you to go away.

McCAIN is very old- he played on the same high school baseball team as Abe Lincoln.

He will pick a young running mate, someone who has not been a candidate.

He will lose to Hillobamary. We are in for a replay of ‘76: Hillobamary is Carter and Bush is Nixon and McCain is Ford.

I remember Hillary saying something along the lines of not wanting to be president either.

I also remember Larry Craig intending to resign.

I don’t trust a word out of these people’s mouths.
