Animal Rights Nuts Harrass 11 Year Old For Shooting Monster Pig (UPDATED): Harrassment Claims Possible Hoax

The wild pig, known as “Hogzilla” weighed 1050 pounds when it was shot by the boy last May:

When a 1,000-pound wild hog was shot last year in Alabama, 11-year-old hunter Jamison Stone couldn’t have been happier. But his prize photos of the 9-foot-long boar have continued to cause a stink, one the Stone family can’t seem to shake.

The backlash has only grown worse, with one group calling for the hunters’ prosecution.

“It is unbelievable what my family has been through over the past year,” Mike Stone, Jamison’s father, told the Birmingham News. “It has taken 10 years off my life.”

An online petition has garnered more than 800 signatures from around the world demanding prosecution for what activists are calling animal cruelty, according to the newspaper.

Not surprisingly, some of the Hogzilla sympathizers have seen fit to threaten the young hunter’s life:

“You should see some of the emails and hear some of the calls we have received,” Jamison’s father said. “They are explicit. They tell how they are going to kill my son, like cutting his head off.

“It has had us scared to death … All I did was to take my son on a legal hunting trip.

Animal rights wackos are some of the scarier left wing crazies out there, imo.

UPDATE:

Rhonda R Shearer, the New York City organizer who has investigated the incident, has weighed in here, in the comments to clarify her role in the story, which I actually didn’t cover.

In a Birmingham News Article she says the pig suffered a “cruel and painful death,” the result of 16 shots from a low-velocity weapon, nine of which hit the hog.

The Birmingham News also reports that the hog was not in fact, “wild” but was a domestic pig that had been released into the wildlife preserve for the purpose of hunting. This is a legal practice:

That is how preserves maintain a steady supply of hogs for hunters, along with hogs that are born wild.

It should be noted that domestic hogs can be every bit as dangerous as wild hogs. My mother tells a story from her youth about a cousin who lived on a farm and fell into the pig sty. She was —well…I’ll spare you the details, but it wasn’t pretty.

Furthermore:

A Web-based petition has drawn 805 signatures from around the world, calling for prosecution in the case. Shearer says she did not initiate the petition but did provide the information that outraged some online readers enough to add their signatures.

County and federal attorney’s offices have investigated the case and declined to bring charges after concluding no laws were broken. The state attorney general’s office said it did not have time to investigate before the statute of limitations ran out.

The enforcement division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries of the Alabama Department and Conservation and Natural Resources also investigated at Shearer’s request and concluded no state conservation laws were broken.

All the stuff she writes about the whole thing being some kind of PR stunt is neither here nor there to me, just an interesting side-note.

The point of this post is that animal rights wackos are threatening and harassing the boy and his family.

UPDATE: (August 10):

Ms. Shearer notifies me that there is growing evidence that there were never any threats made to Mike Stone and his son:

New evidence indicates that they are no death threats –facts point to its another hoax brought to you by the same guy, Mike Stone, who gave the world fake photos and a fake wildlife adventure in the first place.

I found out that the Birmingham News never called the Birmingham FBI bureau or the Pickens County Sheriff’s dept. to ask if the death threats were real and reported by Stone –before publishing it as a fact.

I will report on my findings soon, but let me give you a hint.
There is no investigation– now in 2008 or before in 2007–by the agencies who would be responsible for following up with threats against his child that so “scared” Mike Stone “to death”. Stone is quoted by the Bham News: “You should see some of the e-mails and hear some of the calls we have received,” he said. “They are explicit. They tell how they are going to kill my son, like cutting his head off. “It has had us scared to death … All I did was to take my son on a legal hunting trip.”

The Sheriff’s dept–who would deal with such reports about such crimes for citizens who live in Pickensville Alabama (like Mike Stone)–have never heard about ANY death threats anywhere in the county–let alone from Mike Stone.

Here is her post about the fauxtography employed to make the pig look bigger than it was.

I’m pretty convinced that this Mike Stone character is the shyster, she has been claiming he is, and that should be brought out.

  1. Please do some research before going with one news report that now has lots of corrections. I am a hunter not an animal rights person.

This monster pig hunt was fake right from the beginning …see what I wrote in ESPN and stinkyjournalism.org.

The information sent to the Birmingham News– originally published by me in ESPN. http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/news/story?id=3220628

I wrote: “Birmingham News has not told the truth about this case–even though being told that numerous documents, taped interviews and experts support the fact that this whole hunt was a commercial (viral) marketing scheme gone wrong by a professional marketeer, the boy’s father, Mike Stone working along with the hunters. Go to his web site and read this:

” ‘ Stone Auctioneers & Appraisers is proud to lead the way with innovative marketing strategies and experience that insures predictable outcomes and guaranteed success. As a potential customer, Stone Auctioneers & Appraisers is proud to lead the way with innovative marketing strategies and experience that insures predictable outcomes and guaranteed success.’ Go to http://stoneauctioneers.com/auctions.htm

“Stone and the hunter, Keith O’Neil who sold him the hunt, solicited the press. The press were invited to attend the shooting of a 1000 pound pig by a boy–The Anniston Star included. They even waited for media to show up before starting the hunt. Stone called radio stations –Rick and Bubba among them–to make appearances.

“There was no spontaneous ground swell. Stone solicited celebrities’ “congratulations.” They were then posted on Monsterpig.com –until they Kenny Chesney, Rickey Medlocke of Lynard Skynard etc. found out that these personal (and solicited) congratulations–acts of kindness– were exploited for commercial gain.

$10 posters autographed by Jamison suddenly were for sale. A monster pig video, hats and T shirts promised soon to come. Only when there was controversy did Stone suddenly make the income from the posters charitable. He was calling and writing Smith & Wesson, according to their PR rep, trying to make an endorsement deal for Jamison. (They never responded).

“Right after the May 3rd hunt, on May 5th, Stone purchased the monsterpig.com URL web site– the very same day that Rick Trimm, self-styled producer of the now defunked “TheLegendof HogzillaThe Movie.com, purchased his web address. Jamison Stone had a role in the movie and it was announced on the monsterpig.com web site?

I sent Michael the movie star page for Jamison as having a featured role in the movie. The fake celebrity endorsements and the movie role were mentioned by Anniston Star and AP and served as the hype that fueled the promotional campaign along with the fantasy of a wild giant hog being spontaneously slain. Stone had the nerve to tell “Rick and Bubba” that he did not know the giant animal was there-when in truth, he bought the monster hog hunt (already dubbed “monster” in the April 28th ad) knowing what it weighed.

“Stone asked movie producer Trimm, according to both men, “What should we do to get this story national?” after the original story flagged in the Anniston Star, on May 23rd.

“Trimm advised that Stone call Associated Press. I confirmed that Stone called AP -and the rest is history. The May 25, 2007 AP wire launched the story around the world.

“All of the aforementioned information –and much more–was made available to the Birmingham News. But instead they allowed Mike Stone to make the objectively false claim that “All I did was to take my son on a legal hunting trip” said Stone in the BHam News. This is a blasphemy to truth telling.”

You made an incorrect assumption that an animal activist was behind this investigation. My concerns about the future of the family tradition of hunting are real–unlike the trick photo that remains in AP archives, and the fake hunt.

  2. Rhonda, by my reading it seems NiceDeb’s post was about the death threats received by the family. In your last paragraph you make a statement that NiceDeb made an assumption that an animal activist was behind an investigation. She did mention death threats received from animal activists, not that animal activists had lobbied for an investigation. Nowhere in her post, or in the quoted material she used, is the word investigation used. In fact, in this entire post and comments the word ‘investigation’ is used five times, once by you in your comment and four times in my comment.

Picking a nit, but grand juries are not secret, the deliberations of a grand jury are, however, secret. Since you are a self-styled enforcer of accountability for the media, you might want to exercise a little bit more care yourself about being accurate with what you write. That is, unless your main purpose here is to spam your website.

  3. I’m writing an update to this post in respect to Ms. Shearer, who has obviously spent a lot of time researching this case, (which I have not), But the fact remains, as Cranky said, this post was more about the death threats to the boy, than the hunting incident itself, which The Birmingham News said,

County and federal attorney’s offices have investigated the case and declined to bring charges after concluding no laws were broken. The state attorney general’s office said it did not have time to investigate before the statute of limitations ran out.

The boy most certainly had the right to kill that pig. It’s called “hunting”. It’s legal.

The way he went about it is in dispute, but the federal and Al Dept. of Conservation investigations have cleared him of any wrongdoing.

  9. So Rhonda is upset that this hunt was used for self promotion, and yet here she is using her investigation of this hunt to promote her website.

    From the ESPN article –

Rhonda Shearer is the director of Art Science Research Laboratory, which she founded with her late husband Stephen Jay Gould. The New York-based think tank promotes cross-disciplinary studies and supports a journalism ethics program that publishes StinkyJournalism.org, a site bent on debunking erroneous media.

    From her above comment –

This monster pig hunt was fake right from the beginning …see what I wrote in ESPN and stinkyjournalism.org.

    From the ESPN article –

Who else will join Stinkyjournalism.org to speak out for poor Jamison and hold the real culprits accountable?

Her investagation of Hogzilla also made her Wiki page where stinkyjournalism.org gets mentioned four times.

And one more from ESPN –

She and her colleagues have put hundreds of hours into investigating the claims around a “monster” pig kill in Alabama last year, which they see as a case study in how to create an international media hoax

It sure is a nice little coincidence that her “concerns about the future of the family tradition of hunting” mesh so well with the goal of her website.

  11. You are claiming that you made no assumption that I was an animal rights activist? If that is the case, this post is unfair because I was the only person named and featured –albeit falsely- in the Fox News and Birmingham News articles on the side of the activists who were calling with death threats. You did not clarify that I was not counted by you as among the animal rights group that sponsor the threats.

Stayed tuned.

As to your other points: In this particular case, the Grand Jury itself was secret because, so far, the DA denies to the Birmingham News, according to its reporter (gee maybe I should doubt it) that a Grand Jury was ever scheduled (and canceled the week it was to occur).

My interest in the case is that the MsM refused to tell the truth about this case. No admission that they were hoaxed and misreported due to their lack of checking with experts before publication.

The hunt was a hoax pure and simple. The photo was a hoax. So why is ESPN the only MsM willing to admit this? I have discovered that The AP took the photo down from their archive telling me that it was “dropped” because it was “fake” .

AP sold the images around the world and profited but have never bothered to tell their AP members and customers that they, whoops, ran a fauxtograph. Thus far, no ‘kill” and correction notice has been sent to all of their AP customers and members who trusted AP. I know this because archives that carry their images but are separate businesses still have the monster pig photos listed.

Sad that you would rather point out that our work (that has no ads or subscriptions ) was mentioned on Wikipedia (I mean pleeze–big deal) –than dealing with some of the serious issues involved here. I put money in and take no money out, in my work. It is nearly a thankless job. Along with lots of personal attacks, and listening to MsM manipulations, lies and excuses –trying to get the media to admit they were wrong and tell the truth in transparent corrections–is not fun. Since very little of this work is being done by others–or by the media itself — I feel a duty to do it.

You can look at my site. Due to this article you have highlighted, I was targeted as an animal rights person. I was blamed for supposed calls and emails with death threats to Stone about his son….that, ahem, look not to exist.

Meantime, Mike Stone, with PT Barnum like promotional skills, has this story of “poor Mike Stone with death threats from PETA people” going around the world, in countries as far as The Netherlands. The story never even mentions the whole thing is a hoax . Why?

After reading the Birmingham News article, check out the transcript excerpt below. Here is what the reporter Michael Bolton told me–but failed to tell the public. When the MsM won’t tell the truth about a pig, what can they tell the truth about? After reading below and the article, is the Birmingham News honest .

MIKE: They said you could take a wild one or a domestic one and never get it that big, that they’ve weighed–from the angle of the picture, the way it was taken, they said–

RHONDA: Oh yeah, that’s for sure. Yeah, in other words, the way it looked, you could get a pig to be a thousand pounds–

    MIKE: But I don’t.

RHONDA: The appearance of the pig was three thousand pounds right?

MIKE: Yeah, that’s what it looks like. Well they figured it probably weighs maybe 600, 700 pounds at the most.

    RHONDA: Right. Right and I–

MIKE: The whole thing was a hoax from the very front.

    RHONDA: Right well good.

    —————————–

MIKE: These people, they can hold fish way out in front of them. Their heads and everything make them look like if you split the–every pig farmer assured me it was that big.

RHONDA: Oh that’s interesting. Yeah and–

MIKE: That’s what–you know right off the bat I just thought there’s no way.

RHONDA: Yeah, that’s interesting. Are you going to–?

    MIKE: Away from them.

RHONDA: Are you going to talk about that in the article. I think that’s interesting.

    MIKE: Yeah, I will.

forged rite states above: “So Rhonda is upset that this hunt was used for self promotion, and yet here she is using her investigation of this hunt to promote her website.’

No I am upset by lying, cheating and manipulations of the public’s trust. The hunt was a lie right from the beginning when they falsely claimed Fred the farm pig was a wild monster (feral) and roaming the hunting preserve when , in fact, he was in his pig pen at the Blissitt farm.

Any father who pays $1,500 for his son to shoot a pig he buys in advance and the press is invited to watch and write a news story is neither poor nor looking for innocent family fun as he tries to portray.

It is the media’s duty to prevent hoaxsters and flim-flammers from using its pages and airtime for propagations of deceit.

  15. Nice Deb quotes the Birmingham News as if it were fact. She writes that I ignore the central issue and then quotes :

“County and federal attorney’s offices have investigated the case and declined to bring charges after concluding no laws were broken…”

This statement is untrue two ways.

    1. I emphasize that the Clay County DA actions do not square with his claim that no laws were broken.

    2. I am no lawyer, but the basic facts in the case seem to clearly fall under Alabama Animal Cruelty Laws and Section 13A-11-76 –judge for yourself. The basic facts are: An animal was shot multiple times in a cruel manner with painful belly wounds, according to multiple forensic experts (three). Expert hunters willfully withheld a kill shot for 3 hours allowing the pig to suffer for reasons of commercial gain. Did the Birmingham News reporter even bother to independently look at Alabama law (that he vaguely cites the DA said did not apply)? See below:

    Alabama Animal Cruelty Laws
    Section 13A-11-14
    Cruelty to animals.
    (a) A person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if, except as otherwise
authorized by law, he intentionally or recklessly:

    (1) Subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment; or

    (2) Subjects any animal in his custody to cruel neglect; or

    (3) Kills or injures without good cause any animal belonging to another.

    (b) Cruelty to animals is a Class B misdemeanor

Regarding the state wildlife laws…it makes total sense that the domestic pig, Fred, was not feral (he was released in the “wild” for 4 days–not ten days) and therefore, was not considered a wild animal even under fair chase rules if they would have applied (they didn’t) under the jurisdiction of Wildlife and Fisheries.

However, regarding what Clay County DA, Thompson told the Bham News was his opinion –that no laws were violated –seems ridiculous in light of the actual law above and the facts.

Mr. Thompson told me a week before he was going to grand jury with this monster pig case end of January 2008 that there were no problems and he was ready to go. He had Lt. Steve Cotney of the Clay County Sheriff’s office do months of investigation (and spending tax payer’s resources). Lt. Cotney was ready to testify the last week in January when the grand jury was scheduled. But on the first day, of the twice annual grand jury for Clay County, Lt. Cotney was suddenly told by Thompson at the court house that “we aren’t going to bother with that.”

These facts don’t seem to square with Thompson exercising a “legal opinion” that there was no case. Thompson’s actions have the appearance–if not the actuality–of influence. My understanding is that you cancel grand juries for reasons of evidence– facts of innocence suddenly emerge (not the case here, according to Lt Cotney) or if you want to hold back to collect more evidence (also not the case here).

Why didn’t Mr. Thompson let justice take its course? Was Thompson worried that the grand jury would rule against the hunters and did not want to take that chance? Lt Cotney went over with me what he planned to say. It was moving and powerful. He also told Thompson what he planned to say…next thing he knows, the grand jury, with no explanation, is canceled. If a jury of the hunters’ peers had the opportunity to have ruled one way or another, then the law would have had a chance to work.

Troy King, the State AG, when we met him felt they might have been able to do something given more time. Thompson ‘s last minute cancellation also seems strategic from this same perspective. Analogous to holding the football down until the buzzer rings and game over, scheduling the grand jury late in the game and then canceling it right before the one year statute of limitations is up, was an effective weapon to kill off any possible enforcement of existing animal cruelty laws .

I have to fight for additional corrections to be made Bham News. Fox News corrections right away and was very ethical.

Here is a sample from international news:
    http://www.agd.nl/1057818/Nieuws/Artikel/Jacht-op-elfjarige-die-megazwijn-doodde.htm

    rough translation from Dutch…

“The eleven-year-old Jamison Stone, which came previous year with an humbugging bulletin in the news because he will have fired an enormously wild pig of almost 500 kilos, are pursued animal activists. The boy becomes gestalkt, gets deathly threats, nocturnal phone calls and hatred mails. The parents of the boy blame this to acting Rhonda Roland Shearer, New Yorkse animal activist who stated that shooting down the pig meant animal maltreatment. That ended in a Internet site and a petition to continue the boy. That did not appear possible, but angry with that had occurred. “

  17. A Fauxtograph is a photoshopped or a staged photo.

Look at Little Green Footballs. Their famous examples exhibit both types and thus will confirm my definition.

The Monster Pig photos are staged. The boy is situated to appear as if he is directly behind the pig when, in fact, he was just over 5 feet back according to a scientist who did an analysis of the perspective geometry in the photo.

The pig and the tree remain in the same position in all the photos but the boy’s head appears larger or smaller depending on how close or far away he is kneeling. (Obviously if he is further away he appears smaller and the pig bigger).

Please give an example of where I have jumped to conclusions? You write “Why do you care what I personally thought? I didn’t mention you at all in my post, because I didn’t know.”

Since the article only names me as advocating enforcement, and cites that animal activists are sending death threats, if you write a headline “Animal Rights Nuts Harrass 11 Year Old For Shooting Monster Pig” unless you specify otherwise I will be considered one of those nuts when you point people to the article that DOES name me.

They are big boys and girls and know how to do their jobs. MsM needs to check their facts. It is up to them–not Mike Stone–to not let flim-flammers control their air-time and pages .

This general principle far out weighs (pun intended) any one individual. If this were about Mike Stone, frankly, I would not waste my time.

You mention that you relied on the Birmingham News for your post. Well shame on them. Can you imagine writing about Mike Stone and NOT calling Alabama Wildlife to ask them how the investigation started before stating as fact that it was me? They now have their corrections featured in Fox News.

They were willing to tell the world that Mike Stone– a known hoaxer’s, that they admit they knew was a hoaxer’s– had terrible violent death threats. But the reporter never called any law enforcement offices –who would be in charge– to fact check? Ask how many threats, and when, and most importantly, if they existed at all.

Since the Bham News acted so recklessly with total disregard for the truth in this pig story, can we really trust their “serious” reportage? What about their reports about murders, rapes and governmental corruption? Are they truthful or just as reckless as the pig tale in their lack of ethic practice?

The pig story begs this question. I see the pig story as baby steps. I am determined to first get the media to tell the truth about a pig…then move on to weapons of mass destruction.
