“Lipstick”, and “pitbull” are two words that have been associated with Sarah Palin since she made her now famous joke at the RNC Convention:
Do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?”
“A hockey mom wears lipstick.”
Soon she was known as “the Pit bull with lipsticK”, and liberal columnists wrote sneering op eds featuring the term. Obama supporters chanted, “No Pit Bulls! No Pit Bulls” at a recent Obama rally.
Today, at an Obama rally in St. Louis, MO Rep Russ Carnahan said:
“For all his tough talk [McCain] buckled to the right wing of his party in his choice. Picked someone with zero experience in national government, zero experience in foreign affairs. There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick.”
And via The Politico, in Lebanon, VA:
Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin’s new “change” mantra.
“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”
“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”
Now, the McCain campaign is saying that Obama called Sarah Palin a pig. His supporters certainly took it that way:
Ben Smith is quick to point out that Obama didn’t call Sarah Palin a pig, per se. Of course he didn’t in so many words.
But is it possible that the Obama campaign would be so careless as to use the word, lipstick and “pig” , and believe it would not be seen as a juvenile put down aimed at Governor Palin?
Eight months ago, I might have given Obama the benefit of the doubt. But he does have a history of this sort of thing.
PUMAs remember:
Hat tip: AoSHQ
UPDATE:
Michelle Malkin thinks the “pig” part of the joke was meant for Sarah, and the “old fish” part was meant for McCain. I think she’s right.
UPDATE II:
More lipsticky goodness from Juan Cole:
What’s the difference between Palin and Muslim fundamentalists? Lipstick
I wish I were kidding.
Again, how is it possible that Obama didn’t know that “lipstick” would be associated with Palin?
Ace thinks it’s a clever ploy to make her overreact, and sound like a prissy girl. Because no one can prove that it was meant as an insult.
Nobody should overreact.
Just remember.
UPDATE III:
The McCain Camp responds:
Thanks to Gateway Pundit.
UPDATE IV:
Captain Ed piles on:
Now Obama and his team want to pretend that this sequence had no meaning whatsoever. It’s always difficult to gauge intent, but one would have to think Obama an idiot for not seeing the subtext of his own statement, especially since the crowd understood it all too well. Obama himself has cried about the supposed racist attacks of Republicans and the McCain campaign all summer long, without ever once giving any evidence of it, and certainly not a data point like this.
If Obama wants to argue subliminal racism, he has no defense against overt sexism now. This is his game, and he just proved himself incompetent at it.
Excellent point. Captain Ed withdrawals a few more examples of Obama’s sexist insensitivity from the memory bank:
- “She’s got the kitchen sink flying, and the china flying, and the, you know, the buffet is coming at me.” — April 20
- “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out.” — February, Tulane University
- “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal.” — February
UPDATE V:
Some funny suggestions for Palin to use at their next campaign stop:
From Mama AJ at AoSHQ:
Gov. Palin tomorrow:
(Steps up to the microphone.)
(Starts to speak, then stops and reaches down and picks up something small.)
(She is now applying lipstick in front of this huge crowd that is laughing and cheering.)
(After a few minutes, the cheering dies down and she begins to speak.)
“Oink.”
(The crowd roars anew…)
From Rush on his radio show:
Start your next rally by taking out a handkerchief and wiping off your lipstick. Then announce, “There, I’m just a pitbull.”
Heh!
UPDATE VI:
From The Democratic Party Blog August 30:
Palin does not change one single thing of what the Republicans are offering which is four more years of George Bush. All that McCain did was to put lipstick on the Pig (the Bush Administration whose failed strategies have wrecked our nation). Nothing has changed except for an exciting and sexy dash of lipstick to freshen up their tired old face of more of the same.
In this instance, the pig is clearly meant to represent the Bush Administration, (as she’s careful to note). The lipstick represents Sarah Palin which is vaguely sexist, but not something I would lose sleep over.
If Obama was repeating a meme from within the Democratic party (and it’s very true that they’ve been very eager to link McCain/Palin to the Bush administration), he should have been more careful with his words. Much more careful. Again…the crowd at the rally responded to his remarks by laughing and cheering. They, clearly, were linking the whole phrase to Palin.
UPDATE V:
Don’t look now, but it’s looking like Obama stole borrowed much of his “lipstick on a pig” speech from a Tom Toles cartoon in the Washington Post. The comments are almost word for word from the Tom Toles cartoon.
If you recall, preceding his “lipstick on a pig” remark, he went through a laundry list of ostensible similarities between McCain/Palin and George Bush:
“‘Watch out, George Bush, except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics – we’re really going to shake things up in Washington!’ That’s not change … you know, you can put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.”
Here’s the cartoon from September 5th:
A Freeper originally caught this.

After telling K.O. how smart the American people are last night, and how they get it, he can’t very well spin his way out of the immediate reaction without still alienating people. I took him to task, and his little dog Joe, too, for his insult to people who love special needs kids but don’t buy into stem cell research. I think he is trying to lose, so he can sit on the sidelines for the next four years and cry about this “racist” country.

From a Chicago Tribune story of last October:
“McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s health-care plan, he said it was ‘eerily reminiscent’ of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
“‘I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,’ he said of her proposal.”
September, 9, 2008 at 8:53 pm
And your point is?
Was Hillary closely associated with the word, “lipstick” at the time?

Patti:
Politics is perception. More people watched Sarah and her lipstick line during the RNC than witnessed The Little Messiah’s
coronationaccpetance speech from Barackopolis.Either he’s sexist or he’s stupid. Either way, he’s too stupid for the Big Chair.

As I listened to livid women call Hugh Hewitt this evening, because they knew exactly what he meant, I realized we know Sarah’s shade of lipstick: Nobama.

BIAP, I was going to comment on your site, but the comment thingy wouldn’t work for me, so I’ll just say it here: good post.
I love how Dem’s presumptuously think their speaking for all of us, when they say these things.
Have you see this from SWeasel, yet?:

That’s pretty funny. I think the female bloggers across the country should put it in their sidebars as a show of solidarity. The comments didn’t work? Hmmmm.
September, 9, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Here is a lifelong Dem commenting at Boston.com about the lipstick on the pig comment, and so much more, also touching on Biden:
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/09/swift_blasts_ob.html
I hate to say it, but it makes me feel ‘embarrassed to be a Democrat’. I am certainly finding it increasingly difficult to have to explain to my children that although this is unacceptable behavior, it IS the Party WE support?
Who is responsible for these dishonorable attacks, all this misinformation (like the stem cell research), personal attacks on women with children working, Do they not understand that this makes our party look like we have lost our values, of not our minds.? Don’t preach to me about Family Values, then lie, deceive, vilify Woman with children for having a career, slander and attack a Woman who knowingly brought a disabled child into this world, AND SAY SHE DOES NOT HAVE COMPASSION FOR OTHER MOTHERS IN THE SAME SITUATION. How dare you Joe Biden! How dare you use a disabled child as an attack weapon! You should be ashamed! Obviously, you and Senator Obama have somewhere along the line lost your compassion, empathy, moral values and ethics.

It’s amazing to me that he and his supporters are claiming that he wasn’t calling her a pig, while at the same time claiming that ‘community organizer’ is code for black.
BTW, anyone know where I can get the code book because I never seem to get the code words.

Yes Anon, if you find that code book, please let us know!
I did think Rudy made it very clear by using a completely descriptive word “ZERO”.
September, 10, 2008 at 5:37 pm
I’m sure it was just an error on the part of his speechwriter. I’m sure that from now on Alec Baldwin will not be writing anymore speeches for Obama.
September, 10, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Also, pig is a distinctly offensive statement when directed at women. I wouldn’t say it’s on “C” word level, but it’s right up there with “are you on the rag.”
Calling a woman you are in a relationship, even just a friendly one, with a pig, even in the most jocular way is one of the surest ways to no longer be in a relationship with a woman, even just a friendly relationship.
September, 11, 2008 at 12:26 am
If you paid attention to what he actually said, it is clear that he is using the common ‘lipstick on a pig’ phrase (even McCain has used it) to describe POLICIES, not PALIN.
Now, if you insist on twisting this his words so that they insult your candidate, go ahead but, don’t expect sentient beings to accept your take on things.
September, 11, 2008 at 12:28 am
No, it is not clear.
You didn’t bother to read my entire post, did you?
September, 11, 2008 at 12:42 am
I read your post. You actually include this:
“Ben Smith is quick to point out that Obama didn’t call Sarah Palin a pig, per se. Of course he didn’t in so many words.”
You proceed from there to the assertion that he DID call Palin a pig.
So, what do you think I missed?
September, 11, 2008 at 1:05 am
Read all of the updates. No, it is not clear. At this point, everybody knows how much the word “lipstick has been associated with Palin. It was an extremely unfortunate choice of metaphor, either a stupid gaffe, or a case of him employing plausible deniability.
September, 11, 2008 at 1:53 am
I understand that you don’t like it but, the statement as offered, stands on it’s own. Putting lipstick on a pig of a policy still leaves it a pig.
I do understand why you are doing this though. Re-framing this as an attack on Palin is a LOT easier than defending those pig/dead fish policies.
September, 11, 2008 at 8:37 am
Well, you’re wrong about that, as you are wrong about so many things.
I’m proud to defend most of Bush’s policies.
He did spend way too much, but at least he didn’t raise taxes. Obama would spend even more, while taxing up the wazoo. That’s what socialists do. Bush calls himself a “compassionate conservative. He was a little too compassionate for my taste.
September, 11, 2008 at 10:50 am
It’s as clear as daylight to me when a person uses a phrase in a sarcastic meaningful way and OB does this routinely — example calling women reporters “sweetie” making demeaning remarks and gestures about or toward Hillary. He can’t even contain his own smirk when he makes these comments because he’s so darn full of himself. It is a phrase often used and that’s precisely why he chose to use it at that particular juncture. I would think he is not so stupid as to use the phrase without knowing full and well the meaning behind it – or if he is it’s just one of hundreds of reasons why he is the wrong choice. Not to mention his own VP pick thinks he made the wrong choice in choosing him – wow – and people are still supporting this clown?
September, 13, 2008 at 10:00 am
Can you imagine what would happen, what kind of outrage would be expressed, if a republican, in a discussion about Obama, used the common and old expression of saying “let’s call a spade a spade”? It’s all in the context, and Obama knew what he was saying, with plausible deniability, or was just stupid, as would be the imaginary Republican “racist” using the spade expression. I’m surprised that after 4 days this hasn’t been brought up. Maybe it’s too racist to think about (snark)
