Obama Lies By Omission On Honduras

Barack Obama tried to explain his  position on ousted Honduran president Zelaya in his speech today in Russia. He did so by stating the undisputed obvious fact that Zelaya was Democratically elected. Jake Tapper reports what he said in his speech:

“America supports now the restoration of the democratically-elected President of Honduras, even though he has strongly opposed American policies,” the president told graduate students at the commencement ceremony of Moscow’s New Economic School. “We do so not because we agree with him. We do so because we respect the universal principle that people should choose their own leaders, whether they are leaders we agree with or not. “

The president’s remarks came in the midst of a speech in which discussed “America’s interest in democratic governments that protect the rights of their people” and supported Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s call for judicial reforms in his country.

What if the majority of the people in a democratic country agree with the democratic government that an undemocratic despot has to go? That question wasn’t addressed. Instead we got this:

“We are very clear about the fact that President Zelaya is the democratically elected president,” President Obama said.

Well, thank you Captain Obvious, but we knew that already, and amazingly, we still support the actions of the Honduran government. Jake Tapper helpfully ran down the recent events that led to Zelaya’s ouster:

The military removal of Zelaya as president – and the appointment of Roberto Micheletti  as interim President by the Honduran legislature – came after Zelaya attempted to rewrite his nation’s constitution to end term limits to continue his rule, despite the fact that term limits in the constitution is one of eight “firm articles” that cannot be changed.

After the Honduran Legislature refused to call a constitutional convention to rewrite the constitution, Zelaya called for a referendum to do so, which the Honduran Supreme Court and Attorney General declared unconstitutional.  Zelaya, allied with leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez , fired top military commander Romeo Vásquez Velásquez for refusing to carry out the referendum.  Every branch of government sided against Zelaya and Congress began discussing impeachment proceedings. Acting on orders from the Honduran Supreme Court, soldiers arrested Zelaya on June 28 and sent him into exile in Costa Rica.

Here is a video chronology of events that led to the Honduran government’s actions:

Those are the pesky little details Obama left out of his defense of Zelaya.

UPDATE:

Rick Moran at The American Thinker blasts Obama’s folly further:

He (Zelaya) has since been impeached which begs the question of why Obama is selectively applying a standard to Zelaya that is no longer relevant?

Instead of being noble and practicing self abnegation when it comes to US interests, why can’t Obama do what we elected him to do and stand up for those interests instead of denying them out of some stupid, naive, notion where he believes we are going to be applauded for shooting ourselves in the foot?

Bragging about acting contrary to your nation’s interests will no doubt be met with approval by the world’s leftists. In the meantime, a perfectly legitimate change of government has occurred that bolsters US interests and Obama is fighting it, putting himself on the same side as the Castros, Danny Ortega, and Hugo Chavez.

Pretty good for a college kid. Disaster for a US president.

UPDATE II:

Hot Air reports:

An exit strategy for the Honduran crisis?

Honduras’ interim government gave hints Tuesday of a possible solution to a crisis caused by a coup, expressing the first signs of flexibility about the possible return of ousted leader Manuel Zelaya.

Roberto Micheletti, who took over following the June 28 coup, applauded the announcement that Costa Rican President Oscar Arias has agreed to mediate efforts to end the standoff.

Arias “is a man with a lot of credibility in the world,” Micheletti told HRN radio. “We are open to dialogue. We want to be heard.”

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that Arias would take part after met privately in Washington with Zelaya.

Micheletti said he would send a delegation soon to Costa Rica — a reversal from past days, when he said he would not negotiate until “things are normal.” Arias won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for efforts to help end Central America’s civil wars.

Clinton To Meet With Zelaya In Washington This Week

She’ll be the highest level Obama administration contact Zelaya’s had since he was deposed, according to Breitbart:

Zelaya is expected in Washington on Tuesday following an unsuccessful attempt to return to Honduras over the weekend that deepened the country’s political crisis. The State Department says the administration remains committed to seeing a restoration of democratic order in Honduras and deplored the use of force against Zelaya’s supporters.

It didn’t take them long to issue a strong statement against Honduras, did it? It took two weeks for Obama to condemn the insane violence in Iran, with the Basiji thugs hacking at protesters with axes, beating them into comas, and shooting innocent bystanders, but one person dies in a clash with the police in Honduras, and the State Dept. is all over it.

Don’t get me wrong…not knowing the entire story, it does look like the Honduran Military police overreacted to the rock throwing mob, and that certainly doesn’t help the new government’s moral standing, but what happened to allowing a country to handle its internal “robust debate” without our meddling?

Meanwhile, Honduras Abandoned has pix of Code Pink meddling on behalf of Chavez and Zelaya in Honduras.

Here’s a good round up of Honduran bloggers who are trying to get the real story out in the face of so much disinformation.

Honduras Abandoned reports: Killing Bullet Is Not Of Military Caliber

This is just a rough translation, as I am hurrying to make it available in English:

The Minister of Defense Adolfo Lionel Sevilla said this afternoon that the bullet that killed a young man at the demonstration Sunday in the Toncontín airport did not come from a military weapon.

According to the experts, the bullet that took the life of a young 19 year old, was not from a military caliber. The report reveals that the direction the young man died does not coincide with the trajectory of the direction of the bullet from the armed forces.

Ramón Custodio: army used rubber bullets

Yes, the reports I was following yesterday afternoon said that the military was using rubber bullets to repel the crowd.

20 Armed Nicaraguans Detained at Protest Conclusion, Claims Military Officer

As the rally came to a close, the police arrested 20 Nicaraguans from the crowd, who were armed with .357 pistols. Right now they are being detained and questioned as to their entry into the country and actions at the rally. Besides the Nicaraguans that were arrested yesterday, the officer claimed that there were foreigners from Cuba and Venezuela as well.

It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if a foreign commie provocateur had shot into the crowd in order to create a sacrificial lamb; their own cause’s “Neda”, to blame on the new government of Honduras. There is an ongoing investigation to get to the bottom of it.

Honduran Military Ordered To Turn Back Zelaya’s jet

This is beyond awesome.:

Honduras’ ousted President Manuel said he was getting on a flight home to reclaim his post on Sunday, accompanied by the U.N. General Assembly president and a group of journalists.

The interim government said it ordered the military to prevent the landing of Zelaya’s plane. If turned away, it will likely land in El Salvador, where a separate flight was headed with Latin American leaders who support Zelaya’s reinstatement.

Thousands of protesters were gathering in the capital of Honduras in anticipation of Zelaya’s showdown against the interim government in power since the army ousted him.

Police helicopters hovered over the main Tegucigalpa airport, where soldiers outnumbered travelers and commercial flights were canceled. Access roads were cut off by police checkpoints, with soldiers standing guard alongside.

This doesn’t speak well for the Honduran military: There was bloodshed at the airport protest today, when a soldier/officer reportedly shot into the crowd of protesters who were throwing rocks at the soldiers. 2-3 people are dead. (correction- 1 confirmed dead) Mayhem ensued.

…. did see an older man in a white shirt reach down into the blood pool and cover his hands. He then wiped them on his shirt to make it look like his blood or that he had been involved. Hunter saw what he thought was an AP photographer take the man’s picture. Hunter said if you see it on the web, don’t believe it. It was faked.

He is heading back into the crowd and will update if anything warrants further coverage. Plans on posting pics and his write up when he gets back to hotel. It will be better than mine. Doing this from hastily scratched notes while confirming his safety.

There should be a full investigation into what happened, and the shooter punished to the full extent of the law.

Code Pink has sent a delegation to Honduras.…you can guess whose side they’re on…

It appears that the attempted coup by Zelaya, failed today. But he, Chavez, Castro, and Ortega, with  Obama’s blessing, may try again at another time.

34 More People Hanged In Iran, Many Of Them Dissidents

This is on top of the six that were hanged, last week:

The state-run Fars news agency reported that 20 people were hanged at the Karaj prison west of the capital on Saturday, and another 14 executions elsewhere in Iran have been reported by state media since Wednesday, including six hangings at Teheran’s Evin Prison. Many of those executed have been described in state media as drug traffickers – a charge often leveled at dissidents.

Iranian police say that about 1,000 people have been detained for involvement in the public protests that erupted after June 12 presidential elections.

Mir Hossein Mousavi, the defeated candidate who has branded the victory of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad fraudulent, has been laying low since last Wednesday while still challenging the results.

By the way…for some reason libs think it’s clever to point out that public money is spent on things like roads and bridges, the post office, police and fire fighters, so we must oppose that too, or we’re Socialists, or something. In other words, they equate our opposition to the insane unsustainable deficit spending that has been going on for six months, with all public spending. It’s a silly, dishonest argument. Still, they keep embarrassing themselves with it.

Bombshell: Sarah Palin To Resign

She’s stepping down from the AK Governorship and making way for the Lt Governor July 25!

Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office in a few weeks, she said during a news conference at her Wasilla home Friday morning.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor’s Picnic at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks on Saturday, July 25, Palin said.

There was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Palin made the announcement flanked by Parnell and most, if not all, of her cabinet.

Possible reasons for this development? Conservatives are tweeting that it could be health issues, some brewing scandal, or she’s “gearing up” for the 2012 Presidential  campaign.

It doesn’t seem like a great political move, to me. Why so fast?

I think she was just worn down…sick of having a target on her back. She can go out now, and start earning some money to pay for her legal bills. Congratulations libs.

UPDATE:

Via Melissa Tweets: JUST IN — Sources close to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin tell MSNBC that she is “out of politics for good.”

Just as I suspected…she got sick of the bullshit.

Again, congratulations libs.

UPDATE II:

Here is her resignation speech:

Text here.

UPDATE III:

Wow, they’re staying classy in libland: naturally lib bloggers  feel duty-bound to handle this news with their distinctive brand of  contempt for strong conservative women, large families, and babies they think should have been aborted,  but this Huffpo blogger goes far beyond the call of duty:

Via Heaven Better Have Light Sabers, we find a Huffpo article titled, “Palin Will Run in ’12 on More Retardation Platform.” reads as follows:

In Sarah Palin’s resignation announcement she complained about the treatment of her son Trig who always teaches her life lessons. She said that the “world needs more Trigs, not fewer.” That’s a presidential campaign promise we can all get behind. She will be the first politician to actually try to increase the population of retarded people.

To me, it’s kinda like saying the world needs more cancer patients because they teach us such personal lessons.

Her first act as President: To introduce a Pre-K lunch buffet that includes lead paint chips. Sort of a Large HEAD-START Program.

She will then encourage women to hold off on pregnancies until their 40′s just to mix up some chromosomes.

She now is in favor of abortion only in case of diploid birth.
Her policies will increase jobs because Wal-Mart is building new stores each day and someone has to be the greeter.

It goes on. Funny stuff, huh?

No?

How about the fact that the author looks just like the fat kid in the Numa Numa Yei video? Yeah, that’s kinda funny.

American Power has more Leftist reaction to Palin’s resignation.

Mark Levin has a short but sweet post at the Corner:

Video:Liz Cheney On Clinton’s Dwindling Role At State Dept.

Liz Cheney appeared on the Greta Van Susteran Show on July 1st, saying that Obama missed an opportunity in Iran, and if she were Hillary Clinton, “she would be troubled” by the “stripping of her portfolio”.

More on the Obama/Clinton rift at Hot Air.

Related:

Although Obama missed an opportunity to support Democracy in Iran, he never misses an opportunity to support tyranny:

The United States is opposed to enacting a new set of financial sanctions against Iran that are due to be discussed in the G8 summit next week, diplomatic officials in New York reported Friday.

Let’s allow that to soak in for a moment…Obama is against sanctions in undemocratic Iran, but for “crippling sanctions” against Democratic Honduras.

Captain Ed says Obama’s fantasy continues that he can talk Iran out of their nukes.

Ace thinks Obama knows for a fact that he can do no such thing, but he needs to continue the facade that he can, because he knows the American people don’t accept the idea of a nuclear Iran:

…for Obama, this pretense of negotiation is absolutely critical to his strategy. His strategy is not to actually resolve the crisis in the national interest. His strategy is only to delay the point at which he takes political damage for failing to resolve the crisis, and pretending, up until that point, to be busily and fruitfully working to resolve it.

He needs that. And for that he needs the mullahs.

But they don’t need him for that. Notice that they’re not terribly worried about “meddling” in US politics when they accuse the CIA of engineering the premeditated murder of Neda. They can say that, they can toss around such accusations, because they don’t need a damn thing from Obama.

Obama needs something from them — and they know it.

An Old Saying… explains Obama’s strategy. His strategy of selling this to the American public, I mean.

It is easier to beg for forgiveness than to obtain permission.

In other words, it’s easier to present someone with a fait accompli and say “Sorry, my bad” than to sell them on it before it’s accomplished.

He can’t sell America on allowing Iran to have nukes. Or at least not without taking damage he doesn’t want to.

So he will pretend he’s “working on” the problem with “smart, outside-the-box diplomacy” until they detonate a nuke, at which case he’ll apologize and say “Gee, guys, guess I got taken for a ride. Those stinking liars! Let’s all be mad at them together! But not too mad. They have nukes, now, so it’s not like we can do anything to express our anger at how badly they’ve duped me, your Messiah.”

I also can’t help suspecting that Obama is ideologically more amenable to totalitarianism than Democracy.

Senate Dems Say You Will Have Health Insurance Whether You Want It Or Not

nanny

Say, you’re young, single, and healthy. You want to save some money by not paying for health insurance…that’s your business, right?

Wrong.

Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.

In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties.

Called “shared responsibility payments,” the fines would be set at least half the cost of basic medical coverage, according to the legislation. The goal is to nudge people to sign up for coverage when they are healthy, not wait until they get sick.

What if you run a  business and you can’t afford to cover  employees with health insurance? Tough luck, the Senate bill also calls for a $750-per-worker annual fee on larger companies that do not offer coverage to employees. “Larger companies”? How large? Who knows?

The Dems want to expand a Nannystate that will nag you, take away your allowance, and send you to bed with no supper if you don’t do what it tells you to do. And it will be for your own good because Nanny knows best. But most of all, Nanny wants you in her protective care…from cradle to grave.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says President Barack Obama is being “disingenuous” in telling the American people that Congress is going to design a fair, neutral playing field when it comes to offering a public healthcare option.

“I think it would be totally out of touch with reality,” Gingrich said on ABC News. “I think it’s disingenuous on the president’s part, and it wouldn’t work.”

“I think that it’s very important that we not allow a bureaucracy to get set up,” he told Dr. Timothy Johnson, ABC’s medical editor, one day after the president went on national television to answer questions on his plans for healthcare reform.

“I guarantee you the language they draft for the public plan will give it huge advantages over the private sector or it won’t work,” Gingrich said.

“What they will do is rig the game.

Perish the thought. Nanny is all about, “fairness”. And she’ll no doubt be more fair with some than others.

Judge Sotomayor Worked For Radical PRLDF

Sotomayor

Original artwork by Larry D.

Some new revelations about  Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor reveal a closer than thought of tie to the radical Puerto Rican Legal Defence and Education Fund.

The Washington Times reports that ‘she actively opposed conservative Robert H. Bork’s nomination to the high court calling him a “threat” to the “civil rights of the Latino community.”‘  The group also did legal work for ACORN:

The revelation is included in 350 pages of documents the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund delivered to the senators late Tuesday evening.

Judge Sotomayor worked for PRLDEF in various capacities from 1980 until she became a federal judge in 1992, spending most of her time as a board member.

The documents, which the group’s lawyers have said include relevant information about Judge Sotomayor’s time there, also show the fund did legal work for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, known as ACORN. During the 2008 presidential election, ACORN came under fire after allegations of voter registration fraud.

Now called LatinoJustice PRLDEF, the group also has supported legalized abortion and called the death penalty racist in previously released documents.

“A cursory look at the limited material now in our possession raises several red flags, including a link between PRLDEF and ACORN, as well as information indicating Judge Sotomayor’s deeper-than-previously thought involvement in developing the legal positions of the organization,” said Stephen Boyd, spokesman for the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions.

This report by Judicial Watch highlights a number of positions taken by PRLDF during the 1980s and early 1990s.
