What Does Obama Have To Gain By Reopening The CIA Abuse Investigation?

I’ve been mulling over the Obama Justice Dept’s decision to reopen an investigation into possible CIA abuses of terrorists.  The question was already investigated by the Bush administration in 2004 by the C.I.A.’s inspector general:

When the C.I.A first referred its inspector general’s findings to prosecutors, they decided that none of the cases merited prosecution.

I was wondering what Obama hopes to gain from antagonizing CIA Director, Leon Panetta, and demoralizing the very people who have helped keep us safe for eight years; finally proven:

with the release of CIA documents on enhanced-interrogation techniques long sought by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

With the exception of the far left, Americans  are not terribly wee-wee’d up about the fact that  Bush/CIA interrogators threatened 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed’s family.

On Fox, a little bit ago, John Bolton quipped that the constant declassification of CIA documents is gutting our capability to do things in secret: “If you don’t want an intelligence agency, say so”.

Why would Obama want to reopen his administration’s debate with Dick Cheney, who so clearly won the last round? Today, Cheney, released  this devastating statement about what The Obama Justice Dept. is doing:

The documents released Monday clearly demonstrate that the individuals subjected to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques provided the bulk of intelligence we gained about al Qaeda. This intelligence saved lives and prevented terrorist attacks. These detainees also, according to the documents, played a role in nearly every capture of al Qaeda members and associates since 2002. The activities of the CIA in carrying out the policies of the Bush Administration were directly responsible for defeating all efforts by al Qaeda to launch further mass casualty attacks against the United States. The people involved deserve our gratitude. They do not deserve to be the targets of political investigations or prosecutions. President Obama’s decision to allow the Justice Department to investigate and possibly prosecute CIA personnel, and his decision to remove authority for interrogation from the CIA to the White House, serves as a reminder, if any were needed, of why so many Americans have doubts about this Administration’s ability to be responsible for our nation’s security.

Pundits are saying that whenever Obama runs into trouble domestically, he starts running against the Bush administration.

I just don’t see how this is going to help his sagging poll numbers.

Ace makes a good point:

Eric Holder, pardon-facilitator of Marc Rich and non-prosecutor of the Black Panther vote intimidation thugs, says he’s duty-bound to press this inquiry because he was so horrified at reading about these “abuses.”

Again, what do they think they have to gain from this? This is not a principled fight,  The left doesn’t operate that way. What’s the ulterior motive?

UPDATE:

Love this:

A “furious” Rep. Peter King, the hawkish, maverick Long Island Republican, blasted a “disgraceful” Eric Holder for opening an investigation of CIA interrogators and chided his own party for what he described as a weak response to the move in an interview just now with POLITICO.

“It’s bulls***. It’s disgraceful. You wonder which side they’re on,” he said of the attorney general’s move, which he described as a “declaration of war against the CIA, and against common sense.”

“It’s a total breach of faith, and either the president is intentionally caving to the left wing of his party or he’s lost control of his administration,” said King, the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Homeland Security and a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence.

He later said:

“When Holder was talking about being ‘shocked’ [before the report’s release], I thought they were going to have cutting guys’ fingers off or something — or that they actually used the power drill.”

LOL.

Btw, what’s with the sneer quotes around “furious”, Ben Smith? You don’t think that the willful undermining of our national security  merits a little outrage?

  1. What is political science? After watching politics for over 30 years and working in a sales career, I don’t see any science in politics. It’s all about sales techniques and the worst ones you can imagine. Watching politicians in action is like visiting a used car lot. Fear, uncertainty, doubt, urgency. That’s about the level of sophistication you see with our political elite. It great for use with 12 year olds but those who have been around will be turned off by these techniques – hence the president’s sinking numbers, loss with the healthcare issue and now his vengence weapon (V-2 Bomb as the allies close in) – prosecuting the CIA. What he thinks he will gain? He’s guaranteed a job for another 3 years so he doesn’t have much to lose. Too bad he can’t be voted out sooner if he screwed up (like in sales when you’re judged quarter by quarter).

  2. Aside from the obvious, distract the public from his abysmal administration, I think this is an example of the divide of the right and the left on issues of national security. The left and particularly the left that is now in power, has never supported war under any circumstance, believes that negotiation can solve all problems and fundamentally believes the US is arrogant, imperialistic and is not comfortable with America’s exceptionalism. This is the result of decades of equivalizing in every thing they do in life including national defense. The only people they consider undeserving of equality are conservatives and the people who defend our country. Funny that.

What was the first thing Obama did with foreign policy after getting inaugurated? A speech in Cairo apologizing for US arrogance followed by a worldwide apology tour including to some of our most notorious allies. He refused to “meddle” in Iran while a dictatorial regime killed it’s own people and rigged an election while condeming the current regime in Honduras for following their constitution and removing a president who was attempting to subvert it. He has all but ignored Iraq and the chance for continued success that was handed to him and is instead determined to pullout asap despite changing conditions on the ground. He condemns Israel and praises Hamas creating perhaps the worst relationship between the US and Israel since the founding of the country.

It’s obvious to me that an administration and it’s supporters who sees no moral distinction between a death cult who has been terrorizing and killing US citizens and citizens of our allies for decades would seek to punish in the most public way people who are fighting against the death cult for all the world to see. It’s a continuation of the moral equivalence. We are no better than they are.

This attitude was perfectly demonstrated in the movie A few Good Men. The sympathetic and idealistic Lt. Caffey vs the evil and corrupt Col. Jessup. Personally, I hated Caffey and was rooting for Jessup but it’s Hollywood so we know how that was going to turn out.

    >>>Son, we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and curse the Marines; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said “thank you,” and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

  3. I agree, Deb. Don’t forget two other little details. Hillary Clinton came out the other day and explicitly endorsed the world court and bemoaned the fact that the US is not a player in it … yet. What would happen to our people if any crack pot around the world decided they wanted to press charges in the Hague against our soldiers, intelligence people, etc.? You think people would be more or less likey to take chances on our behalf? I fully expect Obama to press forward with the US joining this kangaroo court.

Also, the UN is set to go back in session on Sept. 15. Obama gave that as a deadline for Iran to agree to negotiations without pre-conditions. It ain’t gonna happen thus marking a huge failure in his hallmark foreign policy plank during the campaign.

He needs a scapegoat to distract everyone from his disastrous administration and who better than the bete noire of the left, “the Bush-Cheney military cabal”.

  4. I’m going with inept.

They’ve been so immersed in leftist thought for so long that they can’t understand that there’s any other viewpoint.

That’s the world where calling senior citizens “Nazis” and “Fascists”, “Mobs” is a good idea. Where the end of your sentence contradicts the beginning of your sentence and you’re a great orator.

Everybody they know or care about agrees with them, heck, arch-conservatives like Peggy Noonan, David Brooks and Kathleen Parker all agree with them too.

They’re trying to distract us from their disastrous domestic policy month by highlighting their disastrous domestic policy initiatives.

My favorite part was designating 9/11 as a hippy holiday.
That might play in EUnuchstan or Terrorstan, but I don’t think it plays well in Biblestan.

  5. Watching some leftist tool on Foxnews right now, he’s talking about widening this to “those who wrote memos”.
He took a gratuitous cheap shot at Cheney and he’s being a real jerk to everybody.

Now, he’s taking shots at the career prosecutors who already investigated the CIA types.
He basically just called them dishonest, political hacks whose work can’t be trusted.

Whenever you see them “defending” their policies, it’s not a defense, it’s an attack on those who criticize it.

    They apparently think that’s “debate”.
They’re inept with a capital “IN”.

  6. I won’t speculate on what the Obama Adminstration thinks it can gain with this. We’ve already seen them screw up and sic their flying monkeys on the electorate, to defame and insult, and last week, Obama made the mistake of invoking God, apparently oblivious to the fact that if a Leftist drags him in to politics, it can hardly be a point of objection if we make reference to him either. But this, this is going to cost them. Sadly, as I pointed out elsewhere this morning, while the entertainment potential is high, so is the likelihood that the gang that couldn’t shoot straight is going to get a lot of Americans killed:

After AG Holder’s decision to go after the CIA interrogators, I’m thinking all bets are off. Darth Cheney will come out swinging, and Obi Wan Obambi is gonna be on the recieving end of some brutal dick punches. Unfortunately, I don’t think that many of his followers are even going to start thinking they made a mistake until the next terrorist attack on US Soil. And for the moonbats lurking, that would be by feriners. The domestic terrorists are the ones in the government working diligently to endanger more Americans, and maybe help make such an attack possible.

  7. This is quite unwanted it seems like Obama is jumping back against the Bush administration so as to divert the attention of people from over failing economy and the less then enough steps taken by the government to stabilize the economy.
