Smart Power: Obama Betrays America’s Allies – For What???

From Poland’s Daily News Fakt

Gateway Pundit reports on the reactions of Poles and Czechs, today:

Strategic ally? Mainstay of our security? End of illusions. United States of America, for which we have for each call, turned his back to us. U.S. President lightly tossed into the trash heap construction of the Poland and the Czech anti-missile shield. The massive military installation was to give special meaning to us in NATO and to strengthen our position towards Russia. But America, instead of Warsaw, he prefers dialogue with Moscow. Yesterday the whole world went round decision Barack Obama Kremlin triumphs, and the Poles have been exposed to the wind.

The Washington Times in an oped, this morning :

Obama’s anniversary gift to Russia

The Kremlin is delighted. The United States unilaterally backed down in face of a Russian demand with no promise of reciprocity. This move decidedly strengthens Moscow’s hand without any appreciable gain for the United States. There is no reason to expect any gratitude. The Russian line will be that Mr. Obama made a pragmatic choice based on the faltering economy and his unwillingness to challenge mighty Moscow. It is a huge win for the Kremlin that adds to Russia’s current momentum and reinforces the president’s growing appearance of international impotence.

As usual, Moscow’s gain is Eastern Europe’s loss. Poland and the Czech Republic have a difficult recent history with Russia, by which we mean 40 years of communist military occupation and political repression. They knew Moscow would object to them hosting an American missile-defense system but decided to take the risk. Warsaw and Prague are good allies to America and have sent troops to assist the coalition efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. They deserved better than a midnight call telling them “thanks, but no thanks.”

The White House picked an auspicious day to wave the white flag on missile defense. The president’s national-security team may say they didn’t notice that the announcement came on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, but everyone in Eastern Europe did. For an administration whose claims of heightened cultural sensitivity border on sanctimony, the timing was an unforgivable faux pas. The anniversary gift compounds the message that Washington is bent on courting Moscow regardless of the broader implications for global security.

obama your welcome

You’re Welcome.

Closing velocity has more on the betrayal, here, here, and here, making the case that Obama’s decision has also made the United States less safe:

An unnamed Senate aide makes the same point I’ve always made here: European missile defense was never exclusively about defending Europe — it was about defending OUR largest east coast cities:

A senior GOP Senate aide said that the effect of the administration’s switch to short- range systems, such as the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), was that the program would no longer have any capability to defend the U.S. homeland and would only be able to protect parts of Europe.

“The important fact here is that if you go with the land-based SM-3s, you don’t protect the United States,” said the aide.

“It changes the nature of the debate,” the aide continued. “Why should the U.S. spend 6 or 7 billion dollars just to protect Europe? That’s going to be a completely different argument.”

Jules Crittenden has more:

Reuters: For Poland, the timing of the announcement is particularly sensitive. Thursday marked the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland following a pact between Moscow and Nazi Germany, an event seen by Poles as “a stab in the back.”

“I hope this is just a coincidence,” said Waszczykowski.

Actually, it probably is. The Obama administration doesn’t study history. It reimagines it. If there is any purposefulness to this date, then its because the Ivans proposed it: “Hey there, my yankee imperialist capitalist lackey fellow traveling tovarich. OK, we’ll make this deal. One thing, could you announce it on Sept. 17? Works better for us. (Muffled giggle).”

Ed Morrissey made the gaffe Hot Air’s Obamateurism of the day.

Makes you almost yearn for the Jimmy Carter days.

I’m reminded of that old Chicago (appropriately) song – “Only The Beginning”.

Per Radio Free Europe: Russia’s Putin Hails U.S. Shield Move, Calls For More
“The latest decisions by President Obama to cancel plans to build the third positioning region of the missile-defense system in Europe inspires hope and I do anticipate that this correct and brave decision will be followed by others,” Putin said.

Putin said those decisions should include “the complete removal of all restrictions on cooperation with Russia” and the transfer of high technology, as well as U.S. support for the joint bid by Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus to join the WTO.

I have a customer who has become a friend in Romania. He grew up behind the curtain under the rule of Ceausescu. The things we talk about that take place under a communist rule like rationing, spying on neighbors, banned books, etc., he lived it. Really spooky stuff.

I always enjoyed visiting him because despite the poverty and backwards nature of the economy and government people were excited about the freedom they were enjoying and the prospects for the future. And they loved Americans and viewed us as their friends and allies.

I’m betting my next trip won’t be so much fun.

Glenn Beck suspects that it might have something to do with a deal for GE in Russia. Apparently a GE businessman met (or will meet) with Putin. How despicable is that if it turns out to be true?

Hi Deb, keep up the good work. I’ll need ya more than ever. Done with Ace. What a self-serving sewer it has become.

Every morning I wake up, is another day closer to a total collapse of the United States. Dear Leader will create this collapse by financial means, foriegn policy means, or any means he sees fit. I have no doubt in my mind he is absolutly hell bent on the destruction of this country. What other reason for his destructive behavior in the White House?

  7. jKr Says:

No, it was not a good treaty..But Poland and Czech Republic invested a lot in signing it –antagonized Russia, exposed themselves to preemptive attacks..
And then the gov in US changes. The treaty lands in trash. Unilaterally. Is this the promised new diplomacy?
Will you all laugh if dare to mention the word ‘honor’, ‘keeping your word’..
Naturally, the national self-interest is important. But if the treaty must be broken–couldn’t you do it a little more subtly? Like let the Poles and Czechs know in advance? Disguise it somehow? No–just the opposite. Do it on Sep. 17…Sep. 17, 1939 was the day when the Soviets attacked Poland from the east–and together with Hitler erased it from the map..25 000 Polish soldiers–mainly officers–were murdered by the Soviets soon after.. we all know about the Nazis..
England and France had a treaty to defend Poland: but they said: We are not going to be dying for Poland!!
Nobody asks Americans to die for Poland: we ask you to keep your word–and if you cannot keep it–at least do it intelligently. The Russians are not going to respect it.. It only will teach them not to believe anything–a lesson they know very well. They practice it themselves.
Must stupidity always have an upper hand? I thought it was suposed to end with the election of the Chosen One.

  8. Veeshir Says:

That GE deal makes me angry, I was going to say that I thought he really thinks that the US is the worst thing in the world, but if he did it for Olbermann’s bosses, well, that’s about despicable.

  9. JackStraw Says:

    Veeshir-

Guess who one of the largest electronic medical records company’s in the world is? GE. I seem to remember digitizing our medical records is a big deal for Obama.

Guess who one of the largest wind generator companies in the world is? GE. Huh, that would come in handy in a green economy.

Guess who has partnered with the Apollo Alliance, the radical group of leftists including former Weather Underground members and, ahem, Van Jones, that also just happened to be a major author of the Obama stimulus crapola. GE.

There’s a reason that Immelt has allowed MSNBC to become an organ of the Obama administration, he already was one. Remember when Chris Matthews said he was going to do all he could to support Obama? Why not? What’s good for Obama is great for GE.

  10. Betty Says:

This administration is a virus. The people of this country better get ready to protest lots more. Please…don’t mention Carter. The Weasel.

  11. Veeshir Says:

JackStraw, I knew most of that, that’s why I was so ready to believe it.

I can handle a corrupt American politican taking my money and giving it to his friends. It’s what they do. Not often on the scale of Obama, but still.

Obama is inviting war in Georgia and eastern Europe to give his friend’s money.
    That’s despicable.

  12. Vmaximus Says:

I remember Carter, and I do not miss him. Bill Clinton on the other hand? Any day over the nobama

  13. nicedeb Says:

    Teej, what happened?

  14. Reiuxcat Says:

I work with a pole. He was on the last plane out before they closed the border. His comments on Obama as of late.

Poland was insulted when Obama did not attend the 70th anniversary of the Nazi invasion which started WWII.

With this missile announcement on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion, the Poles are absolutely livid!

  15. ricky Says:

Ace hasn’t changed except to ask people to tone down the use of expletives. Found Nice Deb through Ace.

  16. JaneLovesJesus Says:

    “I work with a pole.”
You might want to capitalize that ‘p’ lest someone get the wrong idea –heh. /jk

  17. ricky Says:

I hope reiuxcat is a girl.
