The Plain Dealer reports:
Ellie Light revealed: I’m Barbara Brooks, a nurse, says Pro-Obama letter writer
But then Ben Smith at the Politico has some updates:
Now somebody calling herself Brooks is denying the story to the Plain Dealer, at the link above. This is, a reader notes, a deep rabbit hole.
And because I love rabbit holes, the deeper the better, another update: “Ellie Light” emails from the same Yahoo account that was the source of the original letter: “Where is there a denial?… it’s not from me!!”
And now with the latest from Gawker, the rabbit hole gets even deeper:
‘Ellie Light’ Is Not Who She Says She Is
What the freak?
Brooks’ husband, according to public records is a guy named Winston Steward. That’s his Facebook profile picture up top. None of this made any sense, so we called Brooks in Texas, where she also has a home. She says the Plain Dealer got it wrong.
“I’m not Ellie Light,” she told us. “My husband is. I never told anybody that I was Ellie Light. Winston wrote every single letter. He’s been doing it since he saw that the Gulf War was being fought under false pretenses. I told him from the beginning that he shouldn’t write letters under phony names, but he wanted to get them out there.”
So why did she tell the Plain Dealer, in the clearest possible terms, that she was, in fact, responsible for the Ellie Light correspondence? “That wasn’t me,” she says. “I don’t know how they got that. Maybe my husband was impersonating me.” As evidence, she cites this clip of her husband calling into Michael Smerconish’s radio show to claim responsibility for the letters. Steward called in and spoke in his regular voice, and neither Smerconish nor any other listener apparently caught on to the fact that he was a man
Uhhhhh…..
Okay, these two are just too bizarre.
And no, commenters at the The Plain Dealer; conservatives do not do this all the time, too.
Ace, without seeing all the new developments, was able to put it all in perspective, quite well.
UPDATE:
Soooo… are we talking about a couple a hippy-dippy weirdos, or….might there be a connection to the White House, yet?
Dan Riehl, way ahead of the curve, reported on Winston’s Twitter account on Sunday:
The account has never tweeted and follows 18 individuals, with 9 following it. Given that we usually add people we know when we first open a Twitter account, I looked to see who the first individual was that Winston44 added. That would be Adam Segal.
Adam J. Segal, President, The 2050 Group, LLC + Named to PR Week’s 40 Under 40 for 2009.
His firm is The 2050 Group. It seems to be offline right now, though it was up last night and may be having tech issues. He maintained a personal blog on blogger here – ethnicmarketing. He seemed thrilled when Obama ran a spot in Spanish on Univision, not sure if he was involved with that.
What he is, or was involved with is the National Alliance for Hispanic Health Care. And this press release puts them in the White House, Google shows them to be supportive of Obama, particularly his health care reform agenda – and the release also establishes Segal as the media contact.
Nothing about Obama and his creepy minions would surprise me at this point. Nothing.
UPDATE:
Of course. Winston Steward is a Kos Kiddie and Huffpo member.
Andrew Breitbart appeared on Fox this morning to discuss the story, (before her/his identity was reported):

“Ellie Light” story turns a little bit freaky and a whole lot deaky

Exit question: Given that this appears to be some sort of kooky nutroots freelance operation gone wrong and not an Axelrodian master plan, does anyone much care anymore?
LOL.

If what I’ve heard is true, Winston Steward has a history of posting under lots of names, on lots of blogs and forums. I’d be curious to find out if he’s also “carmenjonze”.

“Of course. Winston Steward is a Kos Kiddie and Huffpo member.”
Wow! It could take a few days for me to pick my jaw off the floor on that one…seriously. In the letters I’ve read, Ellie Light has consistently resisted the urge to use the “tea bagger” reference and has opted for the correct “tea partier” nom. I actually posted on another blog that this was proof the writer was NOT someone from Kos or HuffPo. Hell has now frozen over twice in just one month!

He/she was writing for mainstream newspapers where such language would turn off many readers, and perhaps not make it past the editors.
This person knew what he/she was doing.
