On Eve Of CPAC, Conservative Leaders Unite Around Principles And Objectives: The Mount Vernon Statement

A media alert sent to me via email:

BOZELL JOINS 80+ CONSERVATIVE LEADERS IN SIGNING “THE MOUNT VERNON STATEMENT” TO DEFINE CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES, BELIEFS AND VALUES

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Today Media Research Center President Brent Bozell joins more than 80 conservative leaders representing tens of millions of conservative activists to unveil and sign “The Mount Vernon Statement” – a document created to define the conservative movement’s principles and objectives by publicly documenting them on the eve of the nation’s largest conservative conference, CPAC.

The proceedings, led by former U.S. Attorney General Ed Meese, will set a clear vision for Americans and lay out the need for Constitutional Conservatism in light of the changes that have taken place under the Obama administration.   The ceremony will be held at the Collingwood Estate, part of the original land that was the home of President George Washington.  Brent Bozell released the following statement regarding today’s events:

“If there is a silver lining to the policies the Obama administration has tried to shove down the throats of Americans, it’s that more and more of them don’t want any part of it.

“Conservatives are in an excellent position to make the case for Constitutional Conservatism. It’s only taken one year for Americans to see that nothing good comes from Big Government and radically liberal policies, especially at a time when our nation needs economic growth and family values.

“The Mount Vernon Statement solidifies the conservative movement as vibrant and energized, ready to lead America into a renewed era of liberty and self government. Conservatives must reinstitute the great principles that defined us by our nation’s founders.  Conservatives must work to fight the radical agenda that threatens our jobs, our security, our values and our security.  And conservatives must do it together.”

The signing ceremony will be held Wednesday at Mount Vernon.

More than $3.5 billion in economic stimulus funds are going to programs that President Obama wants to eliminate or trim in his new budget.

The president’s budget released this month recommends getting rid of Army Corps of Engineers’ drinking-water projects, which got $200 million in stimulus funds, and a U.S. Department of Agriculture flood-prevention program, which received $290 million from the stimulus, a USA TODAY review of stimulus spending reports show.

    NiceDeb,
i am really disappointed in the Mt Vernon Statement. we were told that it would be a renewing of the original Sharon Statement of 1960, but it fell WAY short. go ahead and compare them side-by-side:

    http://www.fiu.edu/~yaf/sharon.html

as u can see, our enemies were clearly delineated in the Sharon creed – communists – yet in the Mt Vernon puff piece, nary a word about global jihad or any terrorism etc. NADA. ZIP. ZERO. at first when i read it, i thought to give them a benefit of a doubt and think maybe they meant something that our enemies here at home were the same as our enemies in the global jihad? but nope. that’s not what they said at all… what a bunch of empty platitudes.

FOR SOME CONTRAST, plz read this competing manifesto, from last year, which has been given absolutely no media coverage to date: the Thurmont Statement (11 Nov 2009)

    http://www.freedomleadershipconference.org/uploads/ThurmontStatement1.pdf

    (excerpt)
We believe peace and safety are achieved through preparation and strength. They believe peace is achieved through disarming and expressing good intentions, and trust of others who might harm us.
We believe our enemies are best identified by the combination of their words and above all by their actions. They believe our enemies’ words are misunderstood, their actions should be overlooked, and their only condemnation is for past actions of the United States , never against those who strike at our beliefs, hurt our allies and kill our people.
We believe that Communist states and insurgencies always will be adversaries to all that Americans hold dear, and that they must be opposed with a resolute will and sound judgment. We likewise believe that terrorists, whether jihadist or otherwise, are intrinsically evil and that they must be strenuously opposed at every turn. They believe Communist states and insurgencies are just another form of societal organization, and that terrorism can be understood as a merely unfortunate response to the root causes of poverty or Western hegemony. They therefore believe that the best Western policy regarding both Communists and terrorists is to make more persuasive appeals to reason.”

the Thurmont Statement is BY FAR the best conservative creed of any i’ve read so far. plz spread the word! ;)

You’re right. The Thurmont statement is better. Who’s responsible for it?

I liked the Sharon Statement, too. With just a little modification, it could have been updated to address today’s national security issues.

i’ve been studying politics and conservatism for decades, and the Sharon Statement was always kept in the background. i didn’t even know about it until during the Clinton years, when Newt was making his “Contract…” there was talk about a manifesto, and it turns out, that there was, and it was written in 1960. still, after 50 yrs, IMO, all they needed to do is add the words “global jihad” or just “jihad” or even “terrorist” after the communist line, and – viola! – it would be just as relevant today.

the problem i have with the media AND talk radio and pundits, is they all gave big big anticipation to Mt Vernon today based on the weight of the bigwigs releasing it. as u can see though, it was watered down platitudes big time! not one single mention of global war on terrorism, jihad, commies or otherwise! what a disgrace! biggest applause for the Thurmont Statement, we just need to get people to see it. i personally don’t think Rush or Sean or anybody else has seen it, or… they are making their own competing creeds. eh?

for background of the Thurmont Statement, get a load of this! some of the same Young Americans For Freedom people who gave us the original back in 1960!!!

how come nobody heard about this or these folks??? i am pissed off!

I am so glad to see such sense and wisdom from everyone above. Something huge is happening and everyone can feel it. The Mount Vernon statement really is a dissapointment compared with the Sharon Statement, particularly because it is so verbose. The Founders understood that simplicity is the essence of clarity, and that nuance merely adds more room for confusion and mischief.
All of the nonsense of Liberalism can be boiled down to a single word: Corruption. Everything that has gone wrong is the result of a simple lack of moral compass for without it people can be led into the most bizarre beliefs and actions. And when you look at the Fruits of the Tree of Liberalism, they ultimately lead to benefit their sponsors more than anyone else, and by the Fruit you can tell the Tree. Someone reminded us that in his History of Rome Livy wrote: “We have come to a point when we can no longer stand neither our vices, nor their cure.” Let us remember:
WE ARE THE PEOPLE WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!

i still haven’t seen any major pundit or talk radio pick up on the awesomeness of the Thurmont Statement.

apparently, they are all goo-goo-ga-ga over the Mt Vernon Statement. as a Reagan conservative who has stood by the Sharon Statment principles for decades, reading the PC Mt Vernon Statement is… painful. why, WHY, won’t anybody at least comment on the Thurmont Statement? especially since it was from alumni of the very same group Young American For Freedom who gave us the Sharon Statement?
