Offensive and unacceptable
Todd Starnes from Fox News Radio reports:
Tracy Hathaway, of Salinas, CA, told FOX News Radio her 13-year-old daughter was ordered to stop drawing the American flag and start another project at Gavilan View Middle School.
“She had drawn the flag and was sketching the letters, ‘God bless America,’ when the teacher confronted her,” Hathaway told FOX. “She said, ‘You can’t draw that – that’s offensive.’”
Even more striking, another student in the same art class drew a picture of President Obama and was praised by the teacher.
“The picture of Barack Obama was in red, white and blue hues,” Hathaway said. “ The teacher said it was great. But when it comes to the flag – all of a sudden it was offensive?”
Hathaway said she took her concerns to the principal – and he was “floored” and apologized for what happened. He arranged a meeting with the Hathaways and the teacher.
“My husband point-blank asked her what she found offensive about the picture – the American flag or the words, ‘God Bless America,’” she said. “The teacher didn’t say a word.”
The superintendent told FOX that he had contacted the principal and that the issue “was taken care of to their (the parent’s) satisfaction.”
“The school administration and the parents did not view this as significant enough to bring it to the superintendent’s office,” he wrote.

It seems the parents found the issue significant enough to bring it to the attention of Fox News. Moreover, Hathaway says her daughter has not yet received an apology, and in fact, the art teacher told her that she shouldn’t have gotten her parents involved in the matter.
Why does this teacher still have a job?

I agree; doesn’t sound like the parents were all that happy with the ending. Sounds more like they didn’t want their daughter to continue to be abused by that teacher, and I use the word teacher in this instance in contempt. This teacher is a disgrace to the profession and the school administrators are tools to allow it to continue.

You know what’s sick? If the girl had decided to draw a pic of the flag with Obama’s smiling puss in lieu of stars, (like some deeply offensive Obama flags we’ve seen), that would have been just swell with this teacher.

You want to know how to ‘control’ the teaching environment in the Public School system. Parents need to visit the classrooms! Be involved. See what is being taught and how it’s being taught!
What I found most offensive was the teacher chiding the young girl that she should not have gotten her parents involved. That is just not right. For that alone, if it indeed happened, this art teacher should be collecting unemployment and have her teaching degree suspended for some time.
Thank you public school system!

The question is if it is a public school. If it is, I could see the “God Bless America” being seen as disruptive. But this is old news, this debate has been had for years and really has just had itself out.

I think that Obama , being the President deserves the respect of that office . I didn’t vote for him and don’t agree with a lot of what he stands for , but he was voted in by a majority . A teacher has the right to free speech ,but in an authority position to force her views on a child is wrong !!I can’t believe anyone educated in this free country would be so ignorant as to say the flag and God bless america is offensive .

This teacher needs to get the hell out of my country. Teachers like this is why I fear my daughter starting school. Just do your job . Teach & keep your political/religious views to yourself. Unbelievable.
And to think when I was in school we would start the day every day with the pledge of allegiance. God forbid if you praise the US flag or mention God nowadays. People like this are an embarrassment to to the teaching profession & to the country. She should be ashamed of herself.

I don’t know why the picture was cropped that way. I simply copied it, *as is* from the website where I found it, (which just links to his homepage, now).
There was certainly no reason to hide those words.

That’s the problem with America today. When someone says “God Bless America” some people get upset but I am all for saying “God Bless America”. We need God in America everyday. We were founded on Godly principles and we need to stand up for God. I think the teacher needs to apologize to all the parties involded.
