The Flailing President

At the very beginning of the Obama Regime, Rush Limbaugh made a statement that earned him heaps of derision from leftists, moderates, and even a few conservatives:  “I hope the President fails.” Well, the President didn’t fail – he’s been remarkably successful at doing the sort of damage we conservatives feared most – right out of the gate, he passed his (now, undeniably wasteful and ruinous) stimulus bill,  took over banks, the automobile industry, and finally in March of this year, the health care industry. All of those battles were hard-fought, ugly, corrupt processes, which in the end, couldn’t be hidden from the public.

So now, much of the public is on to the lies, bullying, corruption and far left agenda of his administration, and thanks to the BP oil spill, they’ve noticed that he’s an incompetent manager in a crisis, to boot.  They’ve also, no doubt noticed a disturbing shift away from our friendly relationships with traditional allies like Israel and Great Britain…towards more despotic regimes. As a result of all this,  the President is in freefall in the polls, and while he may not be failing, exactly, he is flailing…and flailing badly.

Here are some latest poll numbers from the Economist, a  poll of all adults, not registered or likely voters, which as Jennifer Rubin points out, “normally would tilt more to the Left. In other words, among likely voters Obama would probably be doing even worse”:

The results show a president struggling. On the oil spill, 28% approve and 42% disapprove of his performance. On taxes, government spending, immigration, gun control, national defense, and terrorism the respondents say they are closer to the Republican Party than the Democratic Party. On gun control and national defense there is a double-digit gap. Democrats do better on regulating business (but within the margin of error), the environment, abortion (also within the margin of error), gay marriage, health care (by four points) and energy policy. In an enormous turnaround since Obama took office, the parties tie on the economy.

38 percent support the goals of the Tea Party movement; 27 percent do not. In a slew of areas (the Middle East, Afghanistan, energy policy, the environment, the economy, job security, health-care coverage, education, entitlement programs, the financial system, and Wall Street) the public thinks we are worse off than two years ago. There is no area in which the public thinks things have improved. They disapprove of Obama’s performance on Iraq, the economy (39 percent strongly so), immigration (41 percent strongly so), the environment, terrorism, gay rights, social security, the deficit ( 57 percent strongly or somewhat), Afghanistan, and taxes. On education they approve, but within the margin of error. Overall 44 percent approve of his performance and 49 percent do not.

What does a malignant narcissist do when subject to public disapproval and criticism? Does any amount of self reflection take place? No. He doubles down on the same tactics that earned him the public’s scorn in the first place. Hence, more blaming, self-pity, and bullying of opponents:

Obama on BP: I want to know “whose ass to kick” 6/7/2010

Obama on the spill: “I can’t suck it up with a straw 6/11/2010

and the latest:

Obama to Tea Partiers: See! The Gulf Disaster is What Smaller Government Will Get You 6/12/2010

The president also implied that anti-big government types such as tea party activists were being hypocritical on the issue.

“Some of the same folks who have been hollering and saying ‘do something’ are the same folks who, just two or three months ago, were suggesting that government needs to stop doing so much,” Obama said. “Some of the same people who are saying the president needs to show leadership and solve this problem are some of the same folks who, just a few months ago, were saying this guy is trying to engineer a takeover of our society through the federal government that is going to restrict our freedoms.”

Doug Powers asks, incredulously:

Is the president saying that he didn’t react quickly because he was trying to placate Tea Party activists, thus blaming them for the slow response? Obama almost makes it sound like he let the Gulf die to make a point against those who are for smaller, more responsible government, doesn’t he?

Besides, the whole argument is bogus, desperate, and perhaps eventually counterproductive for Obama.

Yes, I think the public is on to the desperation, as well.

Tom Maguire notes:

Let’s see – BP is drilling on Federally leased site in a Gulf which borders five states and several other countries.  I see an Federal role there that is a bit different from the Feds bailing out the guy down the street who over-extended himself when he bought a house, or taking over health care, but maybe that is just me.

No, it’s not just you. It’s not just conservatives, either… He’s losing the left on this issue, as well, and respect, overseas:

Neither the executive branch of the U.S. government nor BP PLC can be proud of the way they have handled the environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Barack Obama’s escalating tough talk against BP, in particular, is a weak political manoeuvre that only magnifies his administration’s inaction on the big questions that have arisen from the oil spill.

Things are going badly – oil is still gushing and washing ashore, birds are dying and an entire fishery and way of life is at risk – so the public is looking for someone to blame. In a television interview, Mr. Obama said he wanted to know “whose ass to kick” – better it be someone else’s than his own – and directed his foot at BP CEO Tony Hayward, saying he “wouldn’t be working for me.”

Mr. Obama’s rhetoric is unbecoming and ineffective. His apparent anger is rising in direct proportion to demands that he must appear angry. That Mr. Obama has yet to even pick up the phone to speak to Mr. Hayward shows the extent to which the comments are damage control, albeit not of an environmental kind.

Where the President has actually failed is in his ability to fool people….and that’s why he’s now flailing. The old techniques no longer work.

How this will all end, I don’t know. I just want it to end.

Alvin Green Debuts On Twitter

Twitterers Dana Loesch, Tabatha Hale and Lori Ziganto are pretty sure that this is the Alvin Green, Dem Candidate extraordinaire from SC.

He started off well, actually…this is how you’re supposed to use social media:

alvinforsc

Good luck to senator demint as we talk to rhe people of south Carolina. I pledge to avoid the usual politics I hope that he will do the same

Sen DeMint fights for big oil http://bit.ly/a18V9z

He was perhaps a bit off the reservation with this:

Appeasing Ignorance

“There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.”–Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“No people in history have ever survived who thought they could protect their freedom by making themselves inoffensive to their enemies.”– Dean Acheson

A freind of mine said something disturbingly flavored with the taint of truth today:

I predict that a time will come in the very near future when black becomes the new n-word. It will be considered the equivalent of calling someone a nigger if you call them black.

Write it down:
Hotspur
June 11, 2010

Well, we haven’t reached that point yet, but we are getting close.  Who could forget this stunning display of political correctness in action?

Now this wasn’t all that long ago.  And this guy is still says it is racist.  Why?  Because it’s “black”.  Duh!

And the “explanation” only gets stupider the longer he talks.

Where to begin?  Do we start with the idea of perpetual victimhood that requires not only the purported victim to identify something that victimizes them, but also requires others to find victimization on their behalf like the famous addition of the word “Boy!” to Congressman Joe Wilson’s outburst “You Lie!” as the President stood before Congress and…well, lied?  I know I saw the clip numerous times, and I never heard the word, but seeing as how I’m not “enlightened” enough to shovel shit write for the New York Times, like the correspondent who claimed she heard it nonetheless, maybe there is a secret ability of such people to hear things never said.  She didn’t say Congressman Wilson was thinking it, but the implication was there just the same, and he was tarred with it, as the following controversy demonstrated.

This pretending to know what people are thinking and not saying would be reprehensible enough…we can expect a certain level of conduct in the daily discourse of civility, but this tacit notion that some people have a right to declare their knowledge of what people they don’t like are thinking, and ascribing these unsavory thoughts to people who have never said them smacks of a craven cowardice seeking to avoid an honest discussion.  And yet the rest of society entertains this notion that the victims have a right not to be offended by things that were never said, or by how they wish to interpret them, rather than the plain (and sometimes stated) meaning of the speaker.  And like many good intentions, it can lead us to places we don’t want to go.

So today, as I drove home from the office, I heard this story:

Once is a coincidence, twice is a trend.  And once again, a card that has been on the market for three years has been pulled from the market to appease the ignorant victimhood of the a civil rights group that has clearly lost its way.  Reading the news story only made it worse.

It is a graduation greeting from Hallmark that says, “Hey world, we are officially putting you on notice.”

Members of the Los Angeles NAACP did take notice. As characters known as “Hoops” and “Yoyo” banter on, African American leaders hear offensive language.

“And you black holes, you are so ominous. Watch your back,” the card vocalizes.

“That was very demeaning to African American women. When it made reference to African American women as whores and at the end, it says ‘watch your back,’” said Leon Jenkins of the Los Angeles NAACP.

Who knew the study of the Universe could be so racist? I never suspected that Stephen Hawking was actually “very demeaning to African American women”.  Of course, seeing as he’s actually a British subject, one might reasonably ask if his intent was actually to be very demeaning to the female British population of African extraction.  And it only gets more embarrassing from there.  He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.  Who will Barack Hussein Obama throw under the bus for this?

Once the claws were out, the NAACP decided to flex its muscle.  And once more, concessions were made to appease the offended.

When Hallmark was reached by phone, they said the card is all a misunderstanding. The card’s theme is the solar system and emphasizes the power of the grad to take over the universe, even energy-absorbing black holes.

The card company says the card speaks about the power the grad will wield.

“The intent here is to say that this graduate is not afraid of anything,” explained Hallmark spokesman Steve Doyal.

But that’s not what some people heard.

Meaning be damned.  This was about POWER, damn it!

Hallmark is now notifying all of its stores to pull the card. Walgreens and CVS are doing the same.

“In any situation where there is a circumstance that we need to be sensitive to, we try to learn from that experience,” said Doyal.

Ok, it is about a greeting card company.  I get it.  They are in the business of catering to emotion.  That’s how they make their money, but really.  They have a card that features the phrase “”Black Hole” a term first used in 1967 to describe a cosmological phenomena that was first theorized in 1783.  What the Hell else do you call a gravity well so powerful that not even light can escape?  The 2011 Budget?  And now it is offensive?  I don’t recall the boycotts and picketing of this:

Truly, the opposition to the use of the phrase is ridiculous.  Black people do not have ownership of the word “Black” like they have taken the ownership of the word “nigger”, a word that no one and everyone have simultaneously determined that is automatically racist and evil if someone who isn’t black utters it, but perversely acceptable and celebrated if it passes the lips of a black person.  (And I use the word “black” because not everyone in this country with black skin considers themselves “African-American”.  I had a Haitian classmate who got very offended when anyone called him “African-American”. )  This hypocrisy aside, there is a marked difference.  The former is a word that defines a color, and therefore is used to describe any number of things that have that color as a characteristic; the latter was always meant as a derogatory term, even if at one time, it was not used to refer to blacks.  That said, it should be apparent to many readers that this isn’t just a case of political correctness gone amuck in the hands of people who have conflated “advancement” with “victimhood” and its thuggish cousin, “denunciation”, it is a symptom of a soft tyranny that is characterized by such petty displays and enthusiastic endorsement of dubious notions such as “hate crimes” which seek to make crimes more criminal by inferring intent based on the race or sexual orientation of the victim.  These notions rob all Americans of the genius and promise set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  In a world with hate crimes legislation or protests based on a descriptive word, there can be no equality before the law, because such things make some people “more equal” than others.  This perversion is pernicious.  It is pervasive.  And it will criminalize your thoughts, even if authority cannot know your thoughts, because they will be attributed to you regardless.  And even the well-meaning will learn that appeasement doesn’t work, as the last line of the story tells us:

However, NAACP members say they do not want to see the card on store shelves ever again.

This kind of victimhood, much like the license of the Congress and the Administration to blame their own shortcomings and failures of leadership on George W. Bush, must be revoked.  If they are not, they will destroy us.

Friday Must-Reads

Eh.

I give up.  There’s some good stuff out there, but I can’t seem to focus on anything, today. It might have to do with constant interruptions from kids home from school. I think we may have to take a trip to the movies, today, unless the sun decides to come out.

Anyhoo, here’s what I found interesting today:

Glenn Beck and others have been all over this Free Press stuff  for some time -(how Orwellian is that name? They want to regulate and limit free speech ala Chavez). Now the Daily Caller’s Mike Riggs brings us: The Neomarxist who is helping to influence Obama’s media policy.

And no, he’s not red-baiting. Robert McChesney, the founder of lobbying group and think tank, “Free Press” is a self-professed “neo-Marxist”.  Not surprisingly, McChesney wields a good deal of  influence with this White House, in fact, a  couple of Free Press employees have landed jobs in the government under Obama.

“Essentially we have someone from a neomarxist media outfit setting America’s global policy on information issues at the State Department,”

Neat, huh? Gah. 2012 can. not. get here too soon.
-
What else?
-
Do you already suffer from heartburn? Then don’t read this latest from Byron York: Billions for ‘green jobs,’ whatever they are

On Capitol Hill, a staffer for Sen. Charles Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, was poring through the Federal Register and spotted the note. Then he went to the Department of Labor Web site, where he found a number of announcements like these:

** U.S. Department of Labor Announces $100 Million in Green Jobs Training through Recovery Act

** U.S. Department of Labor Announces $150 Million in “Pathways Out of Poverty” Training Grants for Green Jobs

** U.S. Department of Labor Announces Nearly $190 Million in State Energy Sector Partnership and Training Grants for Green Jobs

In the staffer’s mind, two and two came together. The Labor Department is shoving money out the door for “green jobs,” yet at the same time is admitting it doesn’t know what a “green job” is.

Can someone please show me how these “green jobs” aren’t another worthless Dem boondoggle?

Vast Majority of Americans Against Newspaper Bailouts

I’m talking only the hardcore Maoists, and Stalinists  (aka Obama’s core constituency) think newspaper bailouts are a good idea:

More devastating news today from Rasmussen Reports for the FTC’s “Reinventing Journalism” project, as fully 85 percent of the respondents to a national telephone survey say protecting freedom of the press is more important than saving existing newspapers.

Perhaps even more worrisome for the FTC is the fact that only 19 percent of the respondents think it’s appropriate for the government to be involved in efforts to prop up existing newspapers, according to Rasmussen.

The FTC’s “Reinventing Journalism” project is only at the staff discussion level for now, but there is clearly an effort supported by President Obama to mount some kind of bailout for the newspaper industry similar to those previously conducted by the administration in taking over GM and Chrysler, as well as multiple Wall Street firms, most of the mortgage industry and key elements of the insurance industry.

See Mark Tapscott at The Examiner for the rest.

Chart of The Day

How do you kill a recovery? Geoff explains in the language he knows best:

None of us were happy with the passage of Obamacare; we’re all pretty much convinced that it’s going to do far more harm than good, and that it will end up costing more and providing less. But I don’t think that we’re as unhappy as we should be, because the health care reform bill damaged our economy even before it was passed.

See Innocent Bystanders for more of Geoff’s commentary.

George F. Will at WaPo: Jobs report a nightmare for Obama progressivism:

Uncertainty is a consequence of hyperkinetic government, which is a consequence of the governmental confidence that is a consequence of progressivism. The premise of progressivism is that all will be well if enough power is concentrated in Washington, and enough Washington power is concentrated in the executive branch, and enough really clever experts are concentrated in the executive branch. This is why the government’s perceived impotence concerning the gulf oil spill is subversive of the Obama administration’s master narrative.

***

Progressives generally, and Obama especially, encourage expectations as large as the 1,428-page (cap-and-trade), 1,566-page (financial reform) and 2,409-page (health care) bills they churn out as “comprehensive” solutions to this and that. For a proper progressive, anything short of a “comprehensive” solution to, say, the problem of illegal immigration is unworthy of consideration. For today’s progressive president, the prospect of a jobless recovery is a comprehensive nightmare.

More bad news from economist Arthur Laffer in the WSJ:

Get Ready for Inflation and Higher Interest Rates

The unprecedented expansion of the money supply could make the ’70s look benign.

Rahm Emanuel was only giving voice to widespread political wisdom when he said that a crisis should never be “wasted.” Crises enable vastly accelerated political agendas and initiatives scarcely conceivable under calmer circumstances. So it goes now.

Here we stand more than a year into a grave economic crisis with a projected budget deficit of 13% of GDP. That’s more than twice the size of the next largest deficit since World War II. And this projected deficit is the culmination of a year when the federal government, at taxpayers’ expense, acquired enormous stakes in the banking, auto, mortgage, health-care and insurance industries.

With the crisis, the ill-conceived government reactions, and the ensuing economic downturn, the unfunded liabilities of federal programs — such as Social Security, civil-service and military pensions, the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, Medicare and Medicaid — are over the $100 trillion mark. With U.S. GDP and federal tax receipts at about $14 trillion and $2.4 trillion respectively, such a debt all but guarantees higher interest rates, massive tax increases, and partial default on government promises.

But as bad as the fiscal picture is, panic-driven monetary policies portend to have even more dire consequences. We can expect rapidly rising prices and much, much higher interest rates over the next four or five years, and a concomitant deleterious impact on output and employment not unlike the late 1970s.

Tax Hikes and the 2011 Economic Collapse

Today’s corporate profits reflect an income shift into 2010. These profits will tumble next year, preceded most likely by the stock market.

In 2010, without any prepayment penalties, people can cash in their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), Keough deferred income accounts and 401(k) deferred income accounts. After paying their taxes, these deferred income accounts can be rolled into Roth IRAs that provide after-tax income to their owners into the future. Given what’s going to happen to tax rates, this conversion seems like a no-brainer.

The result will be a crash in tax receipts once the surge is past. If you thought deficits and unemployment have been bad lately, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

New Documents Obtained by Judicial Watch Reveal Deliberate Election fraud By ACORN

The Obama Justice Dept. will begin its investigation – 3..2…1…never.

The Daily Caller has the story:

The documents obtained by Judicial Watch, a watchdog group, are FBI investigators’ reports related to the 2007 investigation and arrest of eight St. Louis, Mo., workers from ACORN’s Project Vote affiliate for violation of election laws. All eight employees involved in the scandal later pleaded guilty to voter registration fraud.

Project Vote is ACORN’s voter registration arm. Project Vote continues to operate despite the reported dissolution of the national structure of ACORN.

The handwritten reports by FBI agents show that ACORN employees reported numerous irregularities in the nonprofit group’s business practices.

One employee told the FBI that ACORN headquarters is “wkg [working] for the Democratic Party.”

According to one report, an ACORN employee said the purpose of “[f]raudulent cards” was “[t]o cause confusion on election day to keep polls open longer,” “[t]o allow people who can’t vote to vote,” and “[t]o allow to vote multiple times.”

Another report quotes an employee saying, “Project Vote will pay them whether cards fake or not – whatever they had to do to get the cards was attitude.” Project Vote pays based on the number of cards and “that’s why they were so reckless,” the report says.

ACORN’s “repulsive spinmonster, Scott (“tsk-tsk”) Levenson, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Okay, who’s reassured by this:

“These documents show the need for a national criminal investigation by the Obama Justice Department into ACORN,” said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch.

The Daily Caller reports:

So far ACORN has rebranded in 13 states plus the District of Columbia.

ACORN Housing, which is the ACORN network’s primary vehicle for getting its hands on federal tax dollars, has renamed itself Affordable Housing Centers of America.

When will it end?

Tea Party Violence Caught On Tape in NC

Tea-partiers in North Carolina were peacefully protesting the Financial Reform bill and the Durbin BP Bailout amendment, when a a liberal counter-protester decided to throw some political punches – literally, he was looking for an “ass to kick”:

Update: This video disabled:

Fox’s coverage of the incident is still up on Youtube:

About the Financial Reform Bill, via Big Government:

Like a bad cold it can’t shake, the left continues to attempt to blame every ill on George W. Bush.  But as one activists in the video pointed out, its actually one Barack Obama and Senator Dick Durbin who are about to hand a massive check to the very company responsible for one of the worst environmental disasters in history.

The Durbin Amendment to the financial reform bill is the latest government policy proposal that will pad BP’s bottom line.  The amendment would create a government imposed price control scheme that would shift billions of dollars away from consumer to retailers (British Petroleum, Exxon, WalMart).  That’s why the Durbin Amendment is supported by the  big retailers like Walmart, Petroleum Marketers Association and other prominent lobbyist groups which are funded, in part, by British Petroleum.

Proponents cynically and falsely claim it would help consumers, but its hard to see many consumers feeling benefited by paying higher prices while mega corporations increase their profits.

Just look at who is pushing this amendment—oil Companies and giant retailers.

And sadly,  useful idiots on the left are ready and willing to bust some heads to defend this.

Carly Fiorina Open Mike Snafu Very Low On the Gaffe Meter

Since Allahpundit asked…you can watch the video at Hot Air.

I don’t know what the big deal is. She was just dishing. I have no idea why she thinks Sean Hannity is a tough interview, but her crack at the end about Barbara Boxer’s hair was exquisitely catty. I like her a little bit more for it.

Still wish Chuck Devore won, but we can’t have everything. California’s a deep  blue state, but in a year trending Republican, Carly should have a fighting chance.
