Obama “Forcefully Endorses” Ground Zero Mosque

From the AP/ Yahoo News: President Barack Obama hosts an iftar dinner, the meal that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast for Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington, Friday, Aug. 13, 2010.

Earlier this week, we read the news that nearly 70% of Americans oppose the building of the mosque at ground zero. Now, it appears that Captain Kick-A  is drastically on the wrong side of the American people, AGAIN….but then, when has he ever been in tune with the American people, and why should he start, now?

Fox News.com reports:

President Barack Obama on Friday forcefully endorsed building a mosque near ground zero, saying the country’s founding principles demanded no less.

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country,” Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation.

And see? Obama, as usual, throws out the ridiculous strawman. Who, pray, is advocating that Muslims  be prevented from practicing their religion in this country? Hm? Anybody?

Nobody has a problem with Muslims putting up Mosques. That’s one of the lamer arguments I’ve heard Islamists and their lib allies make.

Nobody is even advocating that the government stop them. They are appealing to their better angels to be sensitive to the feelings of Americans who are understandably offended by the idea.

PLEASE…JUST NOT THERE.

Ground Zero is hallowed ground, CK says, and he’s right:

When we speak of Ground Zero as hallowed ground, what we mean is that it belongs to those who suffered and died there — and that such ownership obliges us, the living, to preserve the dignity and memory of the place, never allowing it to be forgotten, trivialized or misappropriated.

***

America is a free country where you can build whatever you want — but not anywhere. That’s why we have zoning laws. No liquor store near a school, no strip malls where they offend local sensibilities, and, if your house doesn’t meet community architectural codes, you cannot build at all.

These restrictions are for reasons of aesthetics. Others are for more profound reasons of common decency and respect for the sacred. No commercial tower over Gettysburg, no convent at Auschwitz — and no mosque at Ground Zero.

Build it anywhere but there.

The governor of New York offered to help find land to build the mosque elsewhere. A mosque really seeking to build bridges, Rauf’s ostensible hope for the structure, would accept the offer.

But the President is on a roll, let’s hear him out:

“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said. “This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.”

Obama made the comments at an annual dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Uh huh. Awesome. Another gift to Republicans.

Obama may want to alert Gibsy, though, because he’s been telling people that as far as the administration is concerned, it’s a local matter.

UPDATE II:

The WSJ:

Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot of the plane the terrorists hijacked and flew into the Pentagon, said she was furious over the president’s remarks.

“I’m so angry. I believe this president has abandoned the American people,” she said. “This isn’t a fight about religious freedom for Muslims. No one has argued they don’t have the property rights. This is about a project led by someone who says he’s trying to build bridges and bring the community together and he’s chosen probably the worst place in America and the worst way to do it.”

  4. Well of course he is. He’s all jiggy with the Muslims.

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country,…”

But just let the Salvation Army start ringing bells around there, or let somebody set up a Christmas creche in the area, and the SWAT team will be out on force.

God will not let this happen. And the best part of it all is that this latest outrage is putting some backbone into Americans again. E Pluribis Unum

  8. One of the difficulties in a democracy is that when you make a rule to protect yourself, the rule also ends up protecting others..even those you may dislike.
For example freedom of speech allows you to speak your mind. But it also allows people you don’t agree with to have a voice too.

In most undemocratic countries like north Korean, Burma and China they have solved this problem by allowing freedom of speech but limiting it to those they agree with.

In America we have a rule that says if an area is zoned for mosques, churches and temples any religion should have the right to build there if they can meet all the legal and financial requirements.

Many Americans blame the religion of Islam for 9/11. They want to make a new rule that says only certain religions they approve of can build near 9/11. The danger is that this is the same justification the North Koreans use to suppress free speech they do not like.

Once you accept their logic it’s easy to buy some rather odd notions like….

    1. No Muslim mosque should be allowed to be built without approval of of local residents.
    2. Out of respect, Families who practice Islam should not be allowed to buy a house within a certain distance from a relative of a victim of 9/11
    3. All the 9/11 terrorists were Muslims. Therefore all Muslims are terrorists and are not protected by our laws.

  9. Gee, thanks for that predictable bit of condescension, Norris. I don’t know how we ever got along without your myopic statements of the obvious.

Many Americans blame the religion of Islam for 9/11.

And I simply cannot imagine why that would be. It isn’t like the hijackers didn’t share the same religion, and were motivated by it to kill infidels so they could attain a paradise described with particularity in their scripture, and formed a plan to do just that, and acted on it in a coordinated fashion.

You, like the President, make no meaningful distinction between what is legal, and what is right.
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and say that unlike the President, your failure to make the distinction arises from a belief that suppression of religion really is the issue, rather than a means for a hypocritical and determined group practicing this same religion to avoid the consequences of the guilt for the acts committedin their religion’s name steps from their proposed mosque .

Make no mistake, the President’s failure to even attempt to craft an alternate solution, or recognize that one might be an opportunity to act like he’s serious about the campaign promises to heal the holes in our souls was not the failure of a man to recognize an opportunity that dropped into his lap. It was consistent with his ongoing mission to dictate to, rather than listen to America.

They want to make a new rule that says only certain religions they approve of can build near 9/11.

No. This isn’t about disapproving of a mosque, and approving of a church or a synagogue. This is about not letting a religion that blotted a landscape and killed thousands in a matter of hours take a victory lap in an area where the remains of those dead fell, and to not allow their memory to be condemned by the shadow of minarets and an ongoing call to prayer for those who killed them and danced in celebration the world over at the news of their slaughter.

You might wanna read the piece above this one, Slick. It might help you with the insight you seem to be lacking.

  10. If their going to build the mosque here then they should allow christian churches to be built without angry citizens saying you can’t do that in our country. Do it here & we do it there.
