The Case Against Cleaver, Part 3: Democratic Socialists Of America

I should have mentioned this in part one, but it totally slipped my mind.

Emanuel Cleaver is one of 70 House members who caucus with Democratic Socialists of America. They proudly made the announcement in their October 2009 newsletter (but it’s been conveniently scrubbed for the election season).  The list is also posted on Scribd.com. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in light of the fact that on his return from Cuba,  he had nothing but praise for Castro’s island paradise.

Maryland’s Dem Governor Calls Illegal Immigrants ‘New Americans’ Repeatedly During Debate

In this Maryland Governors debate a few days ago, Governor O’malley, in addressing the problem of illegal immigration, expressed his appreciation for multiculturalism, and  “new Americans” , whom he says are not the cause of any of our problems.

He’s  up by 5 in the latest poll at RCP, but momentum seems to be going in his Republican challenger’s (Bob Ehrlich’s) direction.

I can’t imagine that this sort of weak rhetoric can possibly help him, especially in the same week that Germany’s Angela  Merkel announced that multiculturalism has “utterly failed”.

O’Malley’s comments come in the last half of the clip:

Unfortunately cut off was Ehrlich’s excellent  response:

“If somebody breaks in my house, is that a new member of my family that night?”
-
Gregory Kane at the Washington Examiner let O’Malley have it with both barrels:
The phrase O’Malley should have used in lieu of “new Americans” is “new Marylanders.” The nation’s leading sanctuary state east of the Mississippi has created its own criteria for state citizenship. And it also has four steps:

1. Enter the country, preferably illegally.

2. Whine about being a victim even though you’ve broken our nation’s laws. In fact, make no reference at all to your breaking the law. Talk about your “rights” instead.

3. Pin the racist tag on anyone who opposes your flagrant breaking of the law.

4. This is the most important step of all: Vote Democratic.

“New Americans” indeed. If there were an award given for the most craven display of caving in to an interest group, O’Malley would win it hands down.

Drudge Goes There, Again

Boo!

Just in time for Halloween, a disturbing batch of pictures of Obama, hot on the campaign trail have been posted on Drudge, prompting Rush to say, Obama looks ‘demonic’ in new photos. Drudge ‘went there’, last year, too, when he posted a handful of Obama “evil eye” photos . Drudge was the  the first media biggie to publicly note what countless numbers had been noticingObama takes a lot of scary looking pix. I noted at the time that lefty bloggers had to spend hours in photoshop to make George W. Bush look that evil.

Last year,  Powerline’s Paul Rahe, also made note of Obama’s troubling  facial expressions and gestures:

The White House has released a series of photographs in which, as the Drudge Report puts it, Obama directed “the evil eye” at various foreign leaders who visited him. Included on the list were German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

I take this, therefore, as an occasion for repeating what I wrote on that earlier occasion: “If we are to comprehend what is going on, we must pay close attention not only to what Obama says but to what he conveys in other ways. His tone is nearly always moderate but what he hints at and what he intimates by way of body language often convey the opposite. Witness his warm embrace of Hugo Chavez. Behind the thin veneer of politeness, there is, I suspect, something ugly lurking. In the first of the autobiographies that he claims to have written, Barack Obama frequently speaks of himself as being in the grips of rage. We would do well to take him at his word.”

Tuesday Link Dump: Early Voting Edition

Happy Tuesday, everyone! How are your GOTV efforts going? Ace spent his Saturday making calls for Sean Bielat. I don’t think there’s a Republican candidate in the country who wouldn’t appreciate some help with GOTV. You can find all the GOTV info you need, here. You can also sign up to be a poll watcher, not just for election day, but for early voting, too. That’s when a lot of the shenanigans happen. Party officials say one third of votes cast will be before election day.

Obama’s encouraging it: The Hill: President Obama asks Giannoulias supporters to vote early in Illinois (and often?)

Good news and bad news for North Carolina, first the good news: White GOP men stand out in early voting and the bad: Breaking: Negligence or Early Voting Fraud in NC 7th District?

…during the first two days of early voting, multiple voters at different polling locations across the district experienced their vote being miscounted by the voting machine. The State Board of Elections has stepped in, but it is too early to tell if the vote counting problems are related to machine error, negligence by the Board of Elections or voter fraud.

This disturbing report comes from Daytona Beach: Florida Case Puts Focus on Issue of Absentee Ballot Fraud:

When police raided Daytona Beach City Commissioner Derrick Henry’s office this week and seized his computer, they say they discovered evidence of what election experts say has become a rampant, largely ignored and troubling issue in Florida — the widespread abuse of absentee ballots.

Police say Henry’s computer was used to obtain dozens of absentee ballots prior to the city’s Aug. 24 elections, in which he was re-elected.

The Daytona Beach probe started when an elections supervisor noticed that as many as 90 absentee ballots had been requested from two e-mail addresses, and that they came from a single computer. (It is illegal in Florida for anyone other than a family member to help in requesting an absentee ballot.)

***

“Absentee ballots are now the weapon of choice for people who want to commit voter fraud,” said Hans von Spakousky, a former Justice Department attorney who monitored voter fraud. “Campaigns will order absentee ballots and then follow the postman door to door on the day they are delivered to pick them up and control the vote.”

This is pathetic:The Blaze: Are Democrats Buying Senior Votes for $250?

Democrats are making a pre-election pitch to give Social Security recipients a one-time payment of $250, part of a larger effort to convince senior voters that their party, and not Republicans, will best look out for the 58 million people who get the government retirement and disability benefits.

The $250 check is meant to make up for a second year without a cost-of-living increase due to low inflation.

President Barack Obama has urged Congress to approve the $250 payment. House and Senate Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid say they will bring up the legislation when lawmakers return for the lame-duck session in November. In the meantime, Democrats are using the proposal to augment their campaign pitch that Republicans would undermine Social Security.

“Instead of helping seniors,” Pelosi’s office said, “Republicans, backed by their allies on Wall Street, are threatening to privatize and cut Social Security, just as they tried to do under President Bush.”

WUWM: Voter Fraud Billboards Cause for Concern for Some

Who would object to anti voter fraud billboards????

The billboards popping up across the city contain images of a few faces behind bars, including a young black male, with the words, “Voter Fraud is a Felony. We voted illegally.” Matt Brusky works with the group, Citizen Action Wisconsin. It wants to know who’s behind the billboards and would like them removed. Brusky says the signs are designed to discourage some people from voting on November 2.

HUH? They are designed to discourage illegal voting. Why would someone who’s properly registered to vote, feel discouraged?

VFW To Dissolve PAC Board!

This great news comes via a memo to the VFW’s National Council of Administration, from Richard L. Eubank, Commander-in-Chief , posted at Blackfive, PDF here.

Here’s a partial list of  liberal Dems the VFW PAC had inexplicably endorsed, while stiffing pro-military candidates like Lt. Col. Allen West:

Harry Reid, Barbara(don’t call me ma’am) Boxer, Ron Wyden, Joe Sestak, Alcee Hastings, Barbara Lee, Steny Hoyer, Barbara Mikulski, Chris VanHollen,  Chuckie Schumer, Pat Leahy, Charlie Melancon, Kendrick Meek, Brad Elsworth, Daniel Inoye, John Dingell, Sander Levin, Mark Schauer, Gary Peters, and Patty Murray.

Needless to say, these endorsements sparked outrage among pro-military conservatives.

Eubank writes:

It is now evident to most of the VFW leadership, both National and especially the
departments, that the VFW has been subjected to extreme negative publicity throughout
the nation, and the recent endorsement decisions have, in fact, harmed the VFW’ s
reputation and future ability to fulfill our mission.

Blackfive notes that the memo comes  after the Ladies Auxilery withdrew all funding support for the PAC.

Now, will these liberal candidates stop mentioning their VFW endorsements in their ads? Something tells me, no.

The Mind-Bending, Gut-Wrenching Hypocrisy Of The Obama White House

After reviewing another round of Sunday talk shows  appearances by Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod, it has become abundantly clear to me that the White House is not backing away from their outrageous attacks on the Chamber of Commerce. Which is incredible because the stench of hypocrisy is so overwhelming that even some Democrats are questioning the White House’s “spaghetti strategy” of attacking organizations for allegedly using foreign money for their political donations.

Robert Gibbs, appearing on Meet The Press, continued to charge that the Chamber’s fund-raising practices pose a “threat to out democracy”, but apparently, only when Republicans are recipients of their donations…

Gibbs regurgitated the same talking points we’ve been hearing all month:

“You’ve got a group that does take money from foreign countries, from companies in other countries. They are running $75 million worth of ads,” Gibbs said. “You and I don’t know exactly who is contributing to that, because there is a program that keeps all of their donors and involvement in these ads a complete secret. You’re not going to know today. You’re not going to know tomorrow. You’re not going to know after the elections.”

Gibbs claimed that “all the conservative groups,” including those co-founded by former Bush adviser Karl Rove, are spending a total of $399 million on the election and said “it does have the potential to derail our democracy.”

Obama threw down the gauntlet on the issue when he said at a rally this month that the Chamber was taking in “foreign money” while spending “huge sums” on the U.S. elections, a scenario he called a “threat to our democracy.”

Unless it’s Democrats receiving the money – then it’s okay…

Gibbs edged off the administration’s offensive during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Questioned on whether Democratic candidates like West Virginia Senate nominee Joe Manchin should “rebuff” the support they’re getting from the Chamber, Gibbs said he’s not concerned about them.

“Look, the Chamber has certainly a constitutionally protected right to air ads. Nobody is arguing that they can’t be involved in the election,” Gibbs said.

But he’s ramping up the pressure to make the Chamber “open up its books”:

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Obama’s top spokesman Robert Gibbs said the world’s largest business federation should “open up its books” and “show the American people” that the money is not coming from foreign sources, as the administration previously suggested.

“The chamber certainly has a constitutionally protected right to air ads, but the president has said that groups that support Democrats and Republicans ought to simply tell the American people where they get their money,” said Gibbs.

This is amazing rhetoric considering reports that Obama spent a record $744 million on his campaign but has disclosed donors for only $485 million, and thousands of his donations, amounting to millions of dollars, came from foreign sources.

The Executive Vice President for government affairs at the Chamber of Commerce has already stated that they have no intention of publicizing their donors, because they don’t see the need of subjecting them to the intimidation practices of Obama allies like the SEIU, the AFL-CIO, HCANN.

But never mind that – if the President was really concerned  about  money coming in from foreign sources, why hasn’t he demanded that liberal groups “open their books” as well? After all, Dems take in twice as much “foreign” money as Republicans.

And why did he hire Robert Gibbs, who in 2004, was the spokesman for a “secretive” liberal advocacy group called Americans for  Jobs, Health Care & Progressive Values, which spent months organizing scathing ads about Howard Dean without disclosing who was paying for them.

Gibbs went so far last week as to direct reporters to walk over to the Chamber of Commerce building and demand that they disclose their donors.

Axelrod continued the drumbeat on CNN:

“They say, trust us, trust us … everything is cool. Everything is kosher. Don’t worry about it, but we’re not going to disclose,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “Let me tell you something — people don’t disclose, there’s a reason.”

Spoken as one who knows…

Of course  there is a reason the Chamber won’t disclose  – they’re afraid of you guys.

What’s Obama’s excuse?

MORE:

They really are embarrassing themselves with this line of attack.

Newsbusters: Mark Shields: White House Made Up Chamber of Commerce Foreign Money Story

This right here really takes the cake!

Marc Thiessen: Are foreign and illegal workers funding Democrats’ attack ads?

Some may argue that raising such questions is unfair. But it was the president of the United States who opened the door to this line of inquiry. Obama recently said of the Chamber, “Groups that receive foreign money are spending huge sums to influence American elections.” Well Obama’s allies in organized labor receive far more foreign money than the Chamber and are spending huge sums to influence American elections. They have boasted of having illegal foreign workers on their rolls and have admitted that they cannot be certain money from foreign nationals has not been used in their campaigns efforts against Republican candidates.

Now it’s time for the Democrats to start answering the same charges that they leveled against the Chamber and American Crossroads with such abandon. Is organized labor using foreign money to elect Democrats this November? To paraphrase the president, they could be — we just don’t know. But if Republicans win two weeks from now, and take control of the investigative committees of Congress, we may soon find out.

Via Red State, here is Sarah Palin’s excellent speech at the Sprint to the Finish” rally in Orange County, CA.

If  Palin’s speech didn’t contain enough red meat for you, there’s always Andrew Breitbart, who, as American  Power reports:

brought the crowd to cheering roars when he went straight at the press corps on top of the media stand beyond the crowd. Check it out on video at The Right Scoop:Andrew Breitbart at GOP Rally in Anaheim, CA.” Watching the clip I’m laughing again because Breitbart slammed the congressional leadership as “Harry Pelosi,” and as the crowd screamed in approval, he spread his arms and said with a laugh, “Hey, Harry Pelosi!” Breitbart warned members of the press that after the election “you will not divide us again.”

Your Sunday Hymn: Lord Of All Hopefulness

Have I ever told you how much I love boys choirs? This is the Palestrina Choir of St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, in Dublin singing Lord of all hopefulness:

The words are by Jan Struther to the beautiful Irish tune Slane.

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy,
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labours, and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Home Depot Co-Founder Ken Langone’s Blistering WSJ Oped

In case you haven’t read this epic Obama smack-down yet, (it came out yesterday), I’ll get you started:

Although I was glad that you answered a question of mine at the Sept. 20 town-hall meeting you hosted in Washington, D.C., Mr. President, I must say that the event seemed more like a lecture than a dialogue. For more than two years the country has listened to your sharp rhetoric about how American businesses are short-changing workers, fleecing customers, cheating borrowers, and generally “driving the economy into a ditch,” to borrow your oft-repeated phrase.

My question to you was why, during a time when investment and dynamism are so critical to our country, was it necessary to vilify the very people who deliver that growth? Instead of offering a straight answer, you informed me that I was part of a “reckless” group that had made “bad decisions” and now required your guidance, if only I’d stop “resisting” it.

I’m sure that kind of argument draws cheers from the partisan faithful. But to my ears it sounded patronizing. Of course, one of the chief conceits of centralized economic planning is that the planners know better than everybody else.

But there’s a much deeper problem than whether I am personally irked or not. Your insistence that your policies are necessary and beneficial to business is utterly at odds with what you and your administration are saying elsewhere. You pick a fight with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, accusing it of using foreign money to influence congressional elections, something the chamber adamantly denies. Your U.S. attorney in New York, Preet Bahrara, compares investment firms to Mexican drug cartels and says he wants the power to wiretap Wall Street when he sees fit. And you drew guffaws of approving laughter with your car-wreck metaphor, recently telling a crowd that those who differ with your approach are “standing up on the road, sipping a Slurpee” while you are “shoving” and “sweating” to fix the broken-down jalopy of state.

That short-sighted wavering—between condescending encouragement one day and hostile disparagement the next—creates uncertainty that, as any investor could tell you, causes economic paralysis. That’s because no one can tell what to expect next.

Okay, that’s all I can post, here  – read the rest at the WSJ.

The reason  Obama is perceived to be wavering all over the map is because he’s a different man to different audiences. He adjusts his persona to whatever audience he’s speaking to, or whatever agenda he’s pushing that day. His true political philosophy, of course, can’t be openly disclosed to the masses.

Friday Free-For-All

I have no idea what to blog about today, so I’m gonna go with a linkfest.

Did you watch the Sharron Angle/Harry Reid debate, last night? Michelle Malkin has the video, plus commentary and Dan Riehl did some fact-checking. Even liberals concede that Reid lost the debate, though both were awkward at times, (esp Harry, of course). Erick Erickson on the question of the night: Sharron Angle Scores! Jennifer Rubin says, despite the left’s attempts to paint tea partiers  as loons,  the most reasonable person on that stage was Angle. Rush is calling it for Angle, saying that it was knockout…not even close. Pack your bags, Dingy.

Hypocrisy alert: Jim Treacher: Whoopi Goldberg just published a book on civility. No, seriously!

Woohoo alert: Jim Geraghty gives us all a riddle:

From the Campaign Spot:

“Reliable GOP Source: Hey, you can’t print this, but we just had a poll come back saying that [House Democrat who everybody figured was pretty safe] is down 20.

Me: Well, that’s swell. But why can’t I use this?

Reliable GOP Source: We don’t think the Democrats know this guy is this much trouble, so we don’t want to tip them off.

More election news at Beltway confidential: Ouch: Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., has just one donor from his district

The Daily Caller on my favorite Democrat: Pat Caddell, furious over ‘hypocrites’ in the White House, unloads on Obama:

Veteran Democratic operative Pat Caddell is unloading on the White House, saying he’s had enough with the president whose “hypocrisy” on campaign finance “is just mind-blowing.”

“My problem with Obama started the day he blew up public financing of presidential campaigns,” Caddell said in an interview with The Daily Caller. “He’s the man whose done the most to destroy whatever integrity there was in campaign financing.”

Obama declined public funding of his presidential campaign in 2008.

The administration’s attacks, Caddell said, on groups like the Chamber of Commerce and donors like the conservative Koch brothers reek of McCarthyism.“I was the youngest person on Richard Nixon’s enemies list. I take this stuff seriously. What they’re doing is Nixonian – it’s McCarthyite,” he said.

***

Caddell also took a swing at Obama’s inner circle.

“These are naive idiots who’ve come out of academia and have never done anything real in their lives, and they are actually in power,” he said. “These are the people we never let in the room when we had serious business to do. Now they’re running the country.”

Yeah, and who put them there? Jennifer Rubin puts the blame squarely where it belongs:

Actually, the biggest problem is not the staff. The one who came out of academia and who had not done much that was “real” (other than write books about himself and get elected) before coming to the White House is Obama. That’s who has been leading the McCarthy-like attacks. That’s who’s got nothing to offer on the economy and jobs. Granted, Obama is surrounded by political hacks who lack real-world experience, but he put them there, and he’s shown himself to be sorely lacking in know-how and judgment when it comes to everything from the Middle East to “shovel-ready” jobs.

Check back, I’m just getting started.

Gotta love Cold Fury: “I’m not anti-Semitic! And did you notice how those damned Jews hounded me out of a job?”

How come I can never think up great words, like, “gorgon”?

Uplifting story of the day: The Blog Prof: Rescued miner says he saw God, devil during captivity, “I buried 40 years of my life down there, and I’m going to live a lot longer to be a new person”

Another uplifting story of the day: Rusty Weiss at the Daily Caller: The culture of life

It took 9/11 for Rusty to appreciate the value of life.

Reading that made me think of this 2003 NRO oped in honor of Roe v Wade’s 25th anniversary: Dead Reckoning:

Everything abortion touches, it corrupts. It has corrupted family life. In the war between the sexes, abortion tilts the playing field toward predatory males, giving them another excuse for abandoning their offspring: She chose to carry the child; let her pay for her choice. Our law now says, in effect, that fatherhood has no meaning, and we are shocked that some men have learned that lesson too well.

I was pleased to find that online.

He is, of course, every inch a national embarrassment — and yet still not the biggest embarrassment to appear in this clip. That would be Schultz, who actually lets this bottom-feeder skate when he dares, dares to complain about negative ads after running the two sleaziest, most offensive spots of the entire midterm campaign.

Allahpundit doesn’t even mention the gut-wrenchingly sycophantic Obama-water-carrying they did in  the clip with their hand-wringing over {{{Republican Overseas donations}}}.  Is it possible to OD on hypocrisy? I mean from watching it???-Because I feel woozy.

Jacob Turk Pulls Within Single Digit Striking Distance of Incumbent Emanuel Cleaver in Missouri’s 5th Congressional District

This is excellent news for a campaign that wasn’t even considered competitive a couple of months ago…

The Following is a press release from the Turk Campaign:

No End in Sight for Cleaver’s Downward Spiral as Democrat Failure and Lack of Message on Economic Issues Ignite Voter Rage

Lee’s Summit, Missouri October 14, 2010 As the New York Times reports a doubling of competitive House races across the United States, candidate Jacob Turk (R MO CD 5) commissioned Rasmussen’s Pulse Opinion Research polling service to measure sentiment for 500 likely voters (methodology) in the 5th Congressional District of Missouri which includes Kansas City, Lee‘s Summit, Independence and Northern Cass County.

The major finding of the Pulse survey is conservatively Turk sits at 43 and has pulled to within single digits of the incumbent Democrat Cleaver who is at 52 with a 4 point margin of error and 95% confidence interval. Other survey questions point to an even closer race with Cleaver’s disapproval rating at 46% and the number of Turk individual contributors increasing to over 1,200 people with the most recent fundraiser over capacity.

The opportunity for Turk is 14% of likely voters who still have not developed an opinion of him with at least 6% of likely voters still undecided and similar candidates in other races polling at historic positive levels in the 5th District.

Furthermore economic issues dominate likely voters’ concerns with cultural issues only in the single digits, which generally poll strongly in a district heavily influenced by conservative Democrats and Republicans. See Appendix A.

In 2006 Cleaver pulled 64 to Turk’s 32. In 2008 during the Obama landslide with high Democrat turnout and a depressed Republican base vote, Cleaver surprisingly did not improve his numbers again pulling 64 but this time to Turk’s 36 with Turk improving his percentages across all types of precincts, urban and suburban . The Turk campaign was still focused on building name ID which has reached the upper 80′s and a field organization now at over 4,100 active volunteers based on a multi-cycle strategy planned in 2006 .

The poll shows a 19 point swing from 2008 as Cleaver has lost significant support based on an historic outrage over President Obama’s and Cleaver’s failed economic policies that have exacerbated high unemployment, out of control spending and a record level of Federal debt and budget deficits.

This is supported by Rasmussen surveying the generic Congressional Ballot on October 11 with Republicans up 8 points over Democrats with the key finding being unaffiliated voters are sharply favoring Republicans, and the party out of power- which they have done for the last three cycles.

“Placing traditional media on top of a grassroots organization built over years, not months, in some of the toughest political cycles will make all of the difference in this race,” stated Jacob Turk (R-MO-5). “We leveraged social media, smaller events, door-to-door in almost every precinct and VOIP based phone banking to save money and reach the last of voters our field organization could not touch. These last two weeks will be the most critical of the last four years of hard work.”

“It’s clear all of Cleaver’s numbers are trending downward and there‘s nothing to stop it,“ stated James O’Brien, General Consultant, Jacob Turk for Congress. “I read about a 6 point difference based on all the statistical information we can gather and some variables in the questions asked. Outlier incumbent Democrats held their ground until very recently in polling, but that clearly is changing as no economic message has emerged from Democrats causing a matrix of problems not easily remedied in the time remaining until Election Day – de-motivating their base, motivating the Republican and conservative base, and igniting unaffiliated voters and the Tea Party movement to turnout and vote for Republicans and/or against current Democrat economic policy failures.”

Appendix A

“In terms of how you will vote in the next national election, are you primarily interested in National Security issues such as the War with Iraq and the War on Terror, Economic issues such as jobs and economic growth, Domestic Issues like Social Security and Health Care, Cultural issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion, or Fiscal issues such as taxes and government spending?

9% National Security Issues

47% Economic Issues

16% Domestic Issues

7% Cultural Issues

16% Fiscal Issues

6% Not sure”

UPDATE:

KMBC reporter, Mike Mahoney says it’s an interesting poll, and agrees with KMBZ’s Shanin and Parks that if Turk is able to pull this off, it will be the political story of the year, but it’s significant that Cleaver hasn’t gone under 50%, yet, which would raise a red flag.
