Video: ATF Official in Mexico Says Heads of ATF and DOJ Knew About Fast and Furious

This stunning CBS exclusive from last March deserves more attention, I think. At that time, the ATF Attache in Mexico,  Darren Gil told reporter, Sharyl Attkisson that the heads of the ATF, and the DOJ  had authorized Fast and Furious. He says specifically that “The Director” knew about it. As you may know,   ATF Director Melson recently told congressional investigators that he knew nothing about the gun walking operation until the controversy erupted. And obviously, Holder has denied ordering the ATF to take “inappropriate steps, (as the President put it.)

Gil’s first inkling that something was amiss was when his ATF analyst informed him that an abnormal number of weapons  were being traced back to Phoenix, “seizure after seizure after seizure” and then he came to find out that he and his ATF cohorts were not allowed access to any information pertaining to the investigation.

In confronting this lack of transparency, he told his supervisor at ATF headquarters in Washington D.C.,  “You are sworn to the Constitution, not sworn the DOJ. You can come out and do the right thing”, and got into shouting matches with him over the phone:

“At some point these guns are going to end up killing either a government of Mexico official, a police officer, or military folks, and then what are we going to do? There was complete silence on the other end of the phone…”

He would ask repeatedly:

“When is this case going to shut down? The Mexicans are going to have a fit when they find out about it. You’re (speaking of himself, here) in Mexico… have limited diplomatic immunity…and the government is looking at you as potentially bringing weapons into their country (which in many cases is an act of war!), and  they’re already very worried about their sovereignty down there, and the ATF agents let this happen. There are agents all across Mexico, and their safety should be the number one priority, and these folks are in that much more danger, now.”

“You have guns going into a foreign country knowingly, a foreign, sovereign land…”

Indeed, now that the truth has come out, Mexico Wants to Prosecute Obama Officials.

“You would think the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee would be interested in this. And the Judiciary Committee….”

“The fact that a law enforcement agency allowed this to happen….we’re supposed to be in the business of interdicting weapons, not putting weapons out there for criminals to use, and that’s what happened in this case.”

I am starting to fear that this heinous operation was about more than just making a case for stricter gun laws…..

There are much easier ways to pass gun laws. Especially since Obama has a tendency to go around the legislative process when he doesn’t get his way. This whole thing just reeks….

UPDATE:

Sipsey Street Irregulars with corroborating information:

Dave Workman: “‘Fast and Furious’ not a ‘renegade operation,’ sources say.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ botched Operation Fast and Furious was not a “renegade operation” but a coordinated effort “from the top down,” congressional sources and ATF insiders told the Seattle Gun Rights Examiner today. . .

According to sources close to the on-going investigations conducted by Senator Charles Grassley and Congressman Darrell Issa, every piece of evidence unearthed so far reinforces the belief that this was a “coordinated effort” that involved individuals high up in the Obama administration. That’s why Grassley and Issa want e-mails and other materials involving a dozen current and former Justice Department officials, as this column reported.

“They knew what they were doing,” said one Grassley staffer to this column Thursday. “When we started looking into this in January, little did we know when we started what this would lead to. At first, it was too unbelievable to believe, but when you start looking into things…” . . .

Beth Levine, spokeswoman for Senator Grassley, noted via telephone this morning that the investigation is nowhere near the proverbial “bottom of this.” Grassley and Issa, with their concurrent investigations, are determined to get there.

“Agitated” Obama Stomps Out Of Meeting With Republicans

dramatic reenactment

I guess the Republicans refused to eat their peas.

According to POLITICO, word of Obama’s foot stomping departure came from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who appears to be the one who pissed the president off.

Cantor said the president became “agitated” and warned the Virginia Republican not to “call my bluff” when Cantor said he would consider a short-term debt-limit hike. The meeting “ended with the president abruptly walking out of the meeting,” Cantor told reporters in the Capitol. “I know why he lost his temper. He’s frustrated. We’re all frustrated.”

The group is nevertheless scheduled to reconvene tomorrow at 4:15 pm ET.

UPDATE: Democrats deny Cantor’s version. From POLITICO.

Democratic sources dispute Cantor’s version of Obama’s walk out, but all sides agree that the two had a blow up. The sources described Obama as “impassioned” but said he didn’t exactly storm out of the room.

A video reenactment of what happened can be seen at White House Dossier.

Because The President and the Leaders of Congress have important work to do.

UPDATE:

Legal Insurrection has more:“Don’t call my bluff,” the president said.

Per ABC News, Obama stormed out of a meeting with Eric Cantor and others when Republicans suggested a short term solution to the debt ceiling dispute because the negotiations were still far apart:

“Don’t call my bluff,” the president said. “I am not afraid to veto and I will take it to the American people.”

Good luck with that…. “The American people” don’t believe word the Lyin’ King says.

Hump Day Link-Around: What The Elites Are Missing

As elites in both parties crucify Republicans for not making a deal with Obama, Jeffery Carter from Points and Figures notes in his post: Debt Policy Debate, What Elites Are Missing.

If they think demagoguing is going to win over fiscally conservative independents, they’ve got another thing coming.

There are two approaches on the table.

One, raise spending and taxes, and raise the ceiling high enough so we don’t have to debate it again-the Democratic approach. Even the middle class is going to get whacked with tax increases in the Democratic approach because they will lose deductions, even though their marginal rates won’t go up. The higher income earners, the “rich”, get socked worse because their marginal rate goes up and they lose deductions.

The second is the Republican approach. Cut spending and hold rates steady, combined with a slight raise of the ceiling.

There isn’t a lot of compromise room between those two positions. Forget about a big budget deal, because we have already started the 2012 campaign.

There really are only two ways out of the knot we are in. Hold taxes steady, raise the debt ceiling enough to get us through November 2012, and cut some spending that is easy to cut so it looks like something is happening. Or, walk away from the table-let Obama use procedure to raise the debt ceiling-and force the US Treasury to find ways to delay certain payments, modify payments and struggle a little.

Then we will have an election in November of 2012 and see who wins. My bet is that the fiscal conservative piece of the independent voter wins out over the socially liberal part. It’s clear from Obama’s record and statements that he doesn’t have a clue about running an economy-or what it takes to create a climate of economic growth.

Those are really the cards the Republicans and Democrats hold. Has nothing to do with management or control of either party. The Inca’s were right. 2012 will be a big year.

The Minority Report is asking fiscal conservatives to Join the “We Know” Movement on the Debt Ceiling:

Calling out the lies and distortions over the debate on raising the debt ceiling, Tea Party folks, started to gather around a Facebook page as well as a statement page on The Minority Report Blog showing their anger, disgust and disbelief at the nonsense coming out of Washington DC by uploading pictures featuring homemade signs saying “We Know” and other slogans showing solidarity in the message that the August 2, 2011 date given by this administration is not only arbitrary but the apocalyptic language and crisis is 100% manufactured.

This is the “We Know” statement:

We Know

There is no emergency.  For four long years, the federal government has manufactured crises that demanded immediate action.
TARP.  The Auto Bailout. The Omnibus.  The Stimulus.  Financial Reform.  Obamacare.

Bailout after bailout, we, the American people, have believed the federal government when they said that they knew something that we didn’t.  No more.
We now know that the powers in Washington do not possess any secret knowledge.  We know that emergencies will continue to present themselves whenever the government wants to spend more of our money.  The problem is that the federal government spends too much, and not that they don’t tax enough.  We know.

America is not in danger of defaulting on our debt.  The federal government takes in $200 billion per month. The interest on our debt is only $20-$30 billion per month.  We know.
There is no new emergency regarding the debt ceiling.  We will not let you raise it.  $14 trillion is high enough.

The federal government is betting that fear will overwhelm us again, and scare us into more panicked action.  It will not.  Knowledge is fear’s antidote.
August 2nd is an arbitrary deadline for a manufactured crisis.  We will not be fooled again.

Thousands back Tulsa officer ordered to Muslim worship

Tens of thousands of Americans are lining up in support of a police officer in Tulsa, Okla., who was punished for refusing his department’s order to attend an “Islamic proselytizing event” even as a legal team representing the captain is petitioning the court to add new allegations of misbehavior by his superiors to a lawsuit over the dispute.

WND reported earlier when a legal action was brought by attorneys with the Thomas More Law Center on behalf of Paul Fields.

Named as defendants are the city, police chief Charles W. Jordan and deputy chief Alvin Daryl Webster.

The lawsuit focuses on the officer’s constitutional and civil rights, and along with a resolution of Fields’ concerns, it seeks an injunction preventing “enforcement of defendants’ unconstitutional acts, policies, practices, procedures and/or customs.”

At issue were orders by the department that Fields participate in an event at a local Islamic center that has been described as a proselytizing campaign. The Tulsa Police Department had told officers to attend a “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day” organized by the Islamic Society of Tulsa. The invitation said the officers would be given tours of the mosque, meet the mosque’s leadership, be given presentations of “beliefs, human rights, women” and “watch the 2-2:45 weekly congregational prayer service.”

Obama’s campaign  lawlessness just hit a brick wall: Politico: Darrell Issa questions White House’s 2012 actions
In what could be considered the committee’s sharpest probe to date of the White House, Issa sent a letter to Obama’s top lawyer Monday evening asking for a slew of documents relating to what the California Republican termed as “an array of potentially illegal fundraising behavior.”

Issa singled out a White House meeting in March between Obama, Democratic National Committee officials and members of the business community — who were all Obama donors. The meeting was organized by the DNC.

He’s also calling into question the Obama administration’s decision to provide access to administration officials – possibly including the White House chef – to large donors.

And Issa is taking issue with a campaign video that he says appears to have been shot in the White House, advertising a raffle to have dinner with Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden in return for contributions.

Is this something?…

Ace: Moody’s: We’re Warning That We Might Reduce the US’s Credit Rating

Here’s why it always pays to check out Michelle Malkin’s blog. Have you heard this amazing news anywhere else? Look who’s throwing IPAB under the bus:

Today, the House held a second hearing on the rogue board of Medicare spending czars created by Obamacare. This mother of all death panels is known as the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). My column looks at growing Democrat opposition to the entity, which would have unprecedented authority over health care spending. Seven Dems are co-sponsors of a House IPAB repeal bill On the Senate side, GOP Sen. John Cornyn is introducing an IPAB repeal bill.

Here’s GOP Rep. Paul Ryan schooling HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on patient-centered Medicare reform. Here’s AEI fellow Dr. Scott Gottlieb’s testimony. Here’s a look at the fatal effect of IPAB on medical innovation. Here’s Philip Klein catching Sebelius’s false assertion this morning that IPAB decisions can be challenged in court. And here’s background on the Goldwater Institute’s federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of IPAB.

Pundette making some great points, as usual: About those empty coffers:

If you found your own personal coffers getting low and you had to prioritize your bills, would you opt to cancel your cable, eat in, and pay your mortgage, or would you blow that off and go for a new Maserati and a five-figure vacation rental on the Vineyard? Of course, with the debt ceiling issue, it’s a gazillion times worse than that, because the money in the perpetually replenished coffers was never theirs to begin with (it comes from the bottomless pockets of the taxpayers), and they’ve borrowed into the next generation or two, to the point of national insolvency, to fund their spending mania.

What’s truly maddening is the way the president talks about it, as if he were a mere spectator. He’s been presiding over this mess for two and a half years, accelerating the spending and power-grabbing as he watches the train coming down the track. Shouldn’t he be at least a little shame-faced when he tells us that the “coffers” are empty? Wasn’t he supposed to be minding the store? Isn’t he the president, and didn’t he have control of both House and Senate when he embarked on his frantic spend-and-expand adventure?

Psssst, I hate to tell you, Jill, but they have an answer to all that. It’s called — “TAX THE RICH!!!111!!”

Koch’s Tour: Pulling Back the Curtain (or: A politician accidentally tells the truth):

…in that one phrase – “there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it” -this American president admitted what many people have been saying for decades: not only is the American government stealing money from the people, but the entire Social Security scheme is a lie.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve listened to what politicians have been saying all these years – they tell us that all of the money that people have been FORCED to contribute towards their “retirement” has been put into some sort of “Lock Box”.  To hear them talk about it, that money is sacrosanct – set aside, never to be touched, always there, NO MATTER WHAT.

The reality is, of course, very different, but politicians have always used soothing words and calm tones to placate their constituents into believing that their government is looking out for them.

Until yesterday.

WHD’s Keith Koffler has the exclusive photo: Mysterious W Appears On Obama’s Head

By the way, Koffler joins Jen Rubin in approving of Mitch McConnell’s Senate plan: Mitch McConnell’s Brilliant Maneuver

…under McConnell’s GOP Have Your Cake and Eat it Too Plan, which Democrats are already agreeing to and which the White House hasn’t exactly opposed, conservatives get to pretend they’ve done something noble by supporting a policy of not raising the debt ceiling that would quickly destroy the economy. And Obama and Democrats will take all the heat.

Under the GOP Have Your Cake and Eat it Too Plan, OBAMA must propose to raise the debt ceiling three times – including the summer before Election Day. Republicans can vote against it, but Obama can veto their vote, in which case they need two thirds majorities to override the veto and not raise the debt limit. They won’t get it, but they’ll get to say they went to the wall to get a deal to cut spending without raising taxes.

This is what’s known as hypocrisy and sanctimony. Its exactly what Republicans accuse Democrats of doing: Taking outrageous ideological positions that make them feel good but that would ruin the country.

The reality is that voters put Obama in office and gave the Senate to the Democrats. If a deal with Obama that doesn’t raise taxes is not possible, then you don’t destroy the country out of spite. You go back and campaign to get a different political calculus in Washington.

Obama’s hypocrisy is equally stirring. He never lifted a finger to reduce the deficit until pressured in this manner. Actually, he added trillions to the deficit through his health care law and stimulus program.

His threat yesterday to deny seniors their Social Security checks is unconscionably bad political theater. The checks will go out Aug. 3. I don’t believe for a minute there aren’t other things that can be done before we snatch granny’s purse or default on loans from the Chinese.

Meanwhile, not earning herself any fans in the rightwing blogosphere, Jennifer Rubin imperiously states:McConnell’s plan confuses the chattering class:

The concept isn’t that hard to understand. 1. McConnell had enough of the phony White House talks. The White House offered a paltry $2 billion in actual, immediate cuts. 2. McConnell gave a speech to make clear that wasn’t enough and that the debt limit would be raised only with real cuts and without tax hikes. 3. McConnell could sit back and wait for default. 4. But he comes up with a mechanism to force Obama to put up cuts, send them to Congress and face “default” if the president’s cuts don’t get through. 5. In the process he makes 34 Democratic senators vote over and over again on cuts. (The sound you hear in the background is the conga line at the Senate Republican Committee headquarters.)

There are no tax increases in the plan. The onus is on the president to send a request for a debt-ceiling increase and the cuts to go along with it. If he doesn’t do it or if the Congress disapproves of what he sends up (and sustains a veto) the debt ceiling remains in place. But the Senate Democrats will have the power to sustain a veto (and thereby allow phony cuts to be used to raise the debt ceiling), right? Which 34 senators exactly are going to do this? Certainly not the ones in unsafe seats with voters clamoring for real spending cuts.

The critics who dimly understand the plan forget that the alternatives are limited. What are the alternatives? Default.

Ace is having none of it:

No, I understand, see. I just know this was pitched to me a year and a half ago and resulted in doodly-squat as far as alleged political benefit accruing to us thanks to a capitulation.

Does Rubin? Does Rubin remember this episode? Or did she never even know of it?

This is, per my initial reaction, too cute by half. It’s a deliberate, cute trap McConnell is creating, where instead of voting against the debt ceiling increase, they vote for it, but then require the Democrats to go through the formality of requesting the debt ceiling increase (three time) to get it.

The media will see this for what it is: An initial capitulation by Republicans, followed by three votes which are no more than formalities, and deserving of that level of reportage.

Got a better plan? Let’s hear it.

Because I’m with Charles Krauthammer on this one: “In The End, All This Is About Who Gets The Blame”.

If you can figure out a way for Republicans to get everything they want, or allow a default and not get blamed by the Democrat Media Complex, I’d like to hear it.

Update:

We can add one more person to team McConnell/Krauthammer/Rubin/Koffler/Carter: One President Left Behind: McConnell Schools Obama on Debt:

…Democrats demagogued the issue, with Obama flying around the country on Air Force One, claiming that if the debt ceiling is not raised, America will default on its debts and the entire economy will collapse.

If Republicans cut government spending, recipients of government checks come after them with pitchforks. If the Republicans refuse to raise the debt ceiling to force spending cuts, the economy collapses.

In general, the trend seems to be in the direction of higher spending and endless debt.

The government will just keep spending and spending until we’re all on bread lines. But there won’t be any bread because within 10 years, nearly the entire federal budget will go to pay Social Security and Medicare recipients. (On the plus side, a lot of us will be speaking Greek by then.)

But now, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has checkmated the Democrats. He has proposed a bill that will allow Obama to raise the debt ceiling three times, up to $2.4 trillion, over the next 18 months, but only provided Obama proposes equivalent cuts in spending each time.

Finally, the Democrats will be forced to pony up spending cuts — or default on the debt and crash the economy.

Contrary to some hysterical Republicans, McConnell’s bill does not forfeit any of Congress’ authority: The House and Senate will still have to decide whether to accept Obama’s proposed cuts when they write their appropriations bills.

But we will finally get some proposed cuts to federal programs from Obama, and not more nonsense about theoretical savings from “investing” in our children’s future with additional spending on Pell grants and prenatal counseling.

McConnell’s deal cleanly takes the debt ceiling issue off the Republicans’ back and puts it on the president’s back. Either the Democrats tell us what they’ll cut or they’ll have to admit: “We will never cut anything. Everything Ann Coulter says about us is true!”

Congressman Walsh To Obama: “Quit Lying”

When it comes to Republican tactics in the sensitive budget negotiations, there are “good cops” and “bad cops”.

And then there’s the “no nonsense”, “cut the crap”, “take no prisoners”, approach of Rep Joe Walsh (IL) taking Obama to the woodshed for his shameful Social Security demagoguery:

President Obama, quit lying. You know darn well that if August 2nd comes and goes there is plenty of money to pay off our debt and cover all social security obligations.

All that totally needed to be said.

It’s nice to know there are people in Washington who do get it.

The Undefeated: A Review

Longtime reader, and fellow Kansas Citian, Always Fired Up, of the Missouri 4 Palin blog, has written an outstanding review of The Undefeated , which I’m honored to cross-post, here. I always meant to write my own review of the excellent film, having seen it at RightOnline, but other pressing things kept taking precedence, so I’m jumping at the opportunity to share this:

We’re Gonna Go Down Fighting: A Review of “The Undefeated”

The first hint that the point of this excellent documentary film is not Sarah Palin is its title. After all, we all know McCain/Palin lost the election in 2008. The more astute might also remember that Mrs. Palin lost an earlier race for Lt. Governor of Alaska. So who are they kidding, naming a movie about Sarah Palin “The Undefeated”?

Well let me be far from the first to explain: The movie is not really about Sarah Palin. The movie is about a distinctly American conservative spirit that will not die.

Recall that Barack Obama entered office in 2009 to thunderous assertions of a new permanent center-left majority, buttressed by inexorable demographic change. Newsweek Magazine confidently asserted “We are all Socialists now!” Conservatives and others who believed in the superiority of capitalist America were left to drown their sorrows quietly, out of the way of Progress. How did this happen?

The Left completed a coup of the democratic process, enlisting Hollywood and traditional mainstream media outlets in its successful effort to smear, delegitimize and humiliate anyone who dared articulate common-sense conservative concepts like low taxes, minimal regulation and small government in a positive and appealing manner. However, most of us had no idea quite how mendacious this campaign had been.

But Sarah Palin knew. Palin, as “The Undefeated” illustrates with simple first-person anecdotes, was a popular bipartisan governor who did not let her conservative ideology get in the way of efficient government. She also took no guff from people who thought she was in over her head, and proved herself a tenacious and inspirational leader. This is not to say “Palin must be the next President!” (although I am quite comfortable with the concept), but only that she was a decent, ethical, capable and pragmatic governor with a conservative philosophic bent. In other words, she was a good person.

Yet the Left was able to twist Palin’s character — decency, ethics and pragmatism — on its head. The campaign bought her clothes? She’s a bubbleheaded fashion doll – a Caribou Barbie! She changed her mind on a particularly high-profile boondoggle termed the “Bridge to Nowehere”? She’s a liar and a hypocrite, freeloading on wealthier states and then having the nerve to pretend to be against earmarks! She embraced a Down Syndrome son and pregnant teenage daughter and welcomed her new baby grandson? She’s a terrible mother who forced her son and daughter to endure the humiliation of being seen by millions in such an embarrassing state, probably caused in the first place by her own narcissism and neglect! She can name chapter and verse of federal oil and gas regulation? She’s an idiot who can’t even read!

The movie “The Undefeated” attempts to unwind the layers of misrepresentation and spin to reveal the truth of Sarah Palin’s history in Alaska. In so doing it exposes how the angry Left formulates its attacks and how the weak institutional Right reacts with “Don’t blame me, blame him/her/it!” Every. Single. Time. Make no mistake: If they can turn this good and humble woman into a veritable Antichrist, they can do it to anyone. We cannot let them. Full stop.

This may sound as if the movie inspires rage. On the contrary: It inspires action. The second half of the film covers the birth of the Tea Party in reaction to the mendacity of the Obama campaign, administration and Reid/Pelosi-led Congress. It reminds us of the power we held in 2010, roaring back from utter defeat in 2008 and enabling the Republican Party to win an historic number of seats and retake the House. It reminds us that we do not have to accept the received Washington wisdom that fair and honest conservatism can no longer win American hearts and minds. It reminds us that the supposed “Party of No” is actually the party of “not only yes, but hell, yes!”

I have long thought that the Tea Party was a fire that grew from a spark ignited on that day in September 2008 when a certain Lipsticked Pitbull stepped onto the stage in her red Naughty Monkey pumps. Palin created an excitement and hope for the future of the GOP that it hadn’t seen in twenty years, a fervor that lasted long past the disappointment of the November loss. This fervor became what is now known as the Tea Party. Palin does not lead it or control it. She was merely the impetus to our realizing that we needed to stand up for ourselves and educate our neighbors about the virtues of a free people and a free economy. The fire burns on its own, spreading from one patriot to another. This is why next time, next election, it will be different. We now have our own media outlets, networking sites and rapid-response teams to rival those the Left used in 2008 to set memes about Republican and conservative candidates. We have seen the depths to which they will go to undermine any candidate with the potential to beat their Lightbringer Obama. We have the tools and awareness needed to strip the whitewash from Democrat peccadilloes and malapropisms and clean the mud off our own candidates. We no longer have to accept the world as the Left would have us believe. The center of this country can see that three years of Leftist policy and crony anti-capitalism has left our economy in ruins with little hope of recovery. The conditions are ripe for a broad reawakening of American conservatism. All we need is the will to set our own destiny and to reject the pessimism of conventional wisdom. We are, after all, The Undefeated.

“The Undefeated” will be premiering on July 15th in:

Grapevine, TX, Highlands Ranch, CO, Oklahoma City, OK, Orlando, FL, Kennesaw, GA, Orange, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Houston, TX, Indianapolis, IN, Independence, MO.

Please go to http://theundefeated.cinedigm.com/tickets.html for your ticket purchases.  While there, be sure to buy an extra one and bring a Palin “fence-sitter” with you.

Linked by Smitty at The Other McCain, who will be returning from Afghanistan in time to see The Undefeated, this weekend, (if he can tear himself away from his wife’s feet in time for his date with RS McCain….)

Gunwalker’s “Dirty Dozen”

Sipsey Street Irregulars has the latest on Gunwalker:

They’re requesting communication records “between and among these senior officials”.

“These records should include e-mails, memoranda, briefing papers, and handwritten notes. Additionally, any records related to communications referring to a large firearms trafficking case within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) or in Phoenix should be included in any production.”

Debt Ceiling News Round-Up: “In The End, All This Is About Who Gets The Blame”

Charles Krauthammer was absolutely correct about that, and he went back to the Clinton/Gingrich budget showdown in 1995 to help make his point. Krauthammer’s segment starts at approx. 1:40.

“People have to remember that with divided government, Gingrich attempted to govern when the Republicans had two houses of congress, in the absence of the Presidency, and were defeated. And now the idea is that the Republicans are going to govern and impose all these cuts holding only the House? It’s impossible. And if they lose the public relations battle here, it will be like 1996, all over again…and they’ll lose the Presidency…If they want real change they’re going to have to elect a Republican, and that is what McConnell has in the back of his mind…”

Brit Hume’s plan to get a debt ceiling agreement with massive cuts and a Balanced Budget Amendment sounds good, but Mitch McConnell’s statement on the Senate floor, today is landing like a lead balloon in the right-wing blogosphere:

Michelle Malkin is hitting her head against the wall: Another mortifying McConnell head-banging-against-the-wall moment

Here’s Rich Lowry: “It’s beginning to get out on the Hill. It’s complicated, but here is the gist as I understand it: Congress authorizes in legislation the president to submit a request for an increase in the debt limit in three tranches over the next year or so, with corresponding proposals for spending cuts; when the president submits his request, Congress immediately considers a resolution of disapproval; if the resolution passes, the president can veto it and–assuming his veto is subsequently upheld–he gets the increase in the debt limit. Got it? More later…”

The Daily Caller Says: ‘Not Leadership’ Conservatives roundly reject McConnell plan giving Obama power to raise debt limit

Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich even took to Twitter to voice his disapproval, saying, “McConnell’s plan is an irresponsible surrender to big government, big deficits and continued overspending. I oppose it.”

Is that the same Newt Gingrich who got his ass handed to him in ’95/96?

Here’s what’s got conservatives so up in arms: We Will Not Pretend That a Bad Deal Is a Good One:

It wasn’t a bad speech, and given the predicament Republicans are in, (which Krauthammer crystallized, above), you can have some sympathy for his way of thinking.

Ace sums up:

There are more quotes at Rubin’s article; it was a good speech. He sums up by noting that Obama insists on one of these three options:

1) Raising taxes

2) Smoke and mirrors to conceal the fact he’s not cutting spending, and endeavors to persuade the Republican Party to join him in this deception

3) Default

…and that Republicans will not agree to any of these. From that, he concludes that real change is impossible while Obama is President.

Now, regarding his actual “backstop” plan.

Guy Benson explains. It’s about politics. Or at least Republicans refusing to go along with one of Obama’s “three options.”

See also: Jen Rubin: EXCLUSIVE: McConnell to Obama: Eat your own darn peas

McConnell is not known for his fiery rhetoric. But plainly, the White House shenanigans have aggravated, if not angered, him. He does a service to his own side and to the national debate by refusing to fuzz up the issues: “We will not pretend that a bad deal is a good one.” He laid out the options: “If you think that the federal government isn’t big enough, then the only responsible thing to do is to support higher taxes. For those who are honest about that, I appreciate their candor. But for those of us who don’t think the federal government should be in charge of banks, the auto industry, the housing business, the student loan business, health care and regulating everything else under the sun, we’re not about to further enable that model of government by shaking down the American people for more money at a time when they can least afford it.”

McConnell’s plan is the ultimate backstop. If Obama doesn’t get off his tax hikes, McConnell has a plan ready for a vote. Democrats could try to filibuster it, but default would then result. It is time to change the rules of the game, McConnell has decided. Let’s see what happens.

Ace thinks it’s a crap deal, and if this is true, he probably right: Liberals Ezra Klein, Joe Klein Are Lovin’ McConnell’s Proposal

The old, fat Klein makes the point that no one cares about the debt ceiling hike. At least, not the broad voting population.

I mentioned in a comment that McConnell had a similar scheme back in December 2009 as we were voting on ObamaCare. We could have forced the Democrats to remain in session through the holidays; instead, McConnell agreed to let them recess and come back, in exchange for a supposedly prominent vote on the 2010 debt ceiling hike.

Yeah, that wasn’t as prominent as planned, was it? No one reported on it and it resulted in zero political benefit.

Here’s the sort of shameless demagoguery Republicans are having to deal with:

Obama: If We Don’t Get a Deal, I Can’t Guarantee We’ll Be Sending Out Social Security Checks on August 3rd

Doug Powers notes:

He could have said something like “If a deal isn’t made there will of course be a problem paying for Social Security in the long term, but in the short term I have many options as far as shuffling dollars around to fund high priorities, so I can say with confidence that Americans who depend on Social Security will still get their checks for the foreseeable future while we sort this out.” But Obama didn’t say that.

Of course not. This is the Chicago way. During the government shutdown budget talks in April, it was the Troops’ pay that Obama couldn’t guarantee.

See also: Confederate Yankee: Fear-Monger-in-Chief:

Presidential leadership is about making difficult choices and assigning rational priorities. Because Mr. Obama is virtually incapable of making difficult choices, he is content to “lead from behind,” as he does with the budget. The debt ceiling–which is in place to keep irresponsible politicians whose only skill is wasting other people’s money from literally spending America into oblivion–need not be raised. The alternative is to get spending immediately under control, but this is not a possibility for Mr. Obama. If the kitty is a bit short, his only solution is to rob pensioners? What brilliant, inspired leadership. No doubt our Treasure Secretary, Mr. Geithner, came up with that one. May I suggest a few additional alternatives?

Mr. Obama could–and should–have said:

(1) I can’t guarantee that the EPA will be able to continue regulating American business out of existence while destroying jobs.

(2) I can’t guarantee that the Department of Education will be able to continue wasting huge amounts of money while over-regulating school districts everywhere.

(3) I can’t guarantee that the ATF will be able to continue allowing weapons to flow into the hands of domestic and foreign criminals.

(4) I can’t guarantee that all of my unelected, unaccountable czars will be able to continue to subvert American democracy.

He ain’t finished – read all 15 of his ideas. Not that Bam would take them up. It’s fun to dream, anyway. The point is – there are any number of programs and bureaucracies that could be cut and no one would miss them (in fact the country would be better off without them). This is why Obama is such a cheap Chicago thug for trying to scare granny with his vicious SS threat..

Stay strong now, Mr. Speaker – no crying, now…

photo via Daylife.

More Krauthammer as he notes with an air of disdain: President Obama’s deficit cutting is a farce:

He wants Republicans to call Obama’s bluff on a debt ceiling 3 month extension deal, because Obama will get the blame when he refuses to sign it.

Republicans have to play this very, very smart. How hard can it be to outsmart a community organizer?

Monty Pelerin’s World: President Quixote’s Legacy: Confused, Ill-Educated and Not Too Bright

How dangerous this delusional man might be is moot. What seems no longer at issue is Obama’s “superior intelligence.” Obama’s belief system is dominated by the dismissed exploitation theories of Karl Marx and the 60′s style radicals he grew up around. The Reverend Wright, preached to him for twenty years about exploitation in terms of Black Liberation Theology. An unrepentant terrorist, Bill Ayers was a close friend and arguably author of one of Obama’s autobiographies. His personally selected “Czars” are the sorriest collection of Presidential advisors ever, at least in terms of reflecting American values and beliefs.

Many went on the same intellectual voyage that Obama did. Most of us outgrew this nonsense, usually by our mid-twenties. Obama never did. He is still a child, intellectually undeveloped and locked into the ideas from the 60′s — both the 1960s and the Marxist 1860s. In that sense he is an intellectual dwarf, frozen in the equivalent of a state of intellectual puberty. His “knowledge” is based on nothing but the discredited ideologies of Socialism.

The claim that Obama is the smartest man to ever hold presidential office is absurd and a reflection on the state of our media who insist on propping up this man-child. Obama’s obsession with keeping his college records and personal past secret is prima facie evidence that the claim is untrue. His knowledge base and dismal performance on the world stage is even more damning.

Instead of having a superior intellect, we likely have the most ignorant, ideological, brainwashed dupe this country has ever elected to high office. The man’s intellectual development never progressed beyond the stage of all-night freshman bull sessions where all the world’s problems were solved (with help from adequate amounts of beer of course).

This intellectual pygmy must be removed from office by whatever possible peaceful means. Impeachment is in order, but will not happen. Thus the 2012 election is critical.

The Democrat Party knows what happened in 2010. They also know that they have an albatross at the top of their ticket. It is likely they will turn on this poseur before the election. If so, this act will be their most significant public service in years.

Video: Thank God For The Soldier

For today’s Project Valour IT post, a video via Marine Team Leader, Howling At The Moon, Thank God For The Soldier performed by former Marine Artie Rodriguez:

With just a couple of days to go , we are still way below our goal of $25,000 with $7,248 (pitiful!)

Go here to make a donation to the Marine Team.

Here’s  a letter of thanks (in advance) for your generosity from a wounded warrior:

In 2005, I was wounded.  For some months, I was unable to use my hands.  They were simply too badly damaged from the blast, and the surgeries to make them usable again left me unable to do anything for myself.

Then came Soldier’s Angels, who gave me a laptop, and paired it with special software that allowed me to control the computer, using only my voice!  Imagine, being able to do anything you can do with a mouse and keyboard, using just your voice.  For me, it allowed me to do one thing, that I could do before I was wounded.

That one thing–when everything: feeding, cleaning, scratching, everything had to be done for me–that one thing I could do for myself allowed me to connect to my soldiers, friends, and family. That one thing… that one thing began a long road to recovery.  It gave me hope; that I could learn to do other things like I did before.

That one thing is only possible if people like you care enough to help.  We have provided thousands of these systems since 2005, but the needs for these systems is still increasing.  I visit military medical facilities and meet with wounded troops, and know that there are ways to help them… and right now, I have to tell them to wait because we need funding.

Should our wounded have to wait for something that can help them heal, take their mind off their pain, or bring them a little sense of self?

Please help us raise $100,000 between July 1-14; to keep us in the business of providing for our wounded.  It seems like a lot of money, but every single dollar  helps.  Every dollar donated goes to the troops.  None of the VALOUR-IT donation goes to administrative or other costs.  You’d be hard pressed to find any charity that does that, but it was a stipulation I made when we set it up.  That number seems huge, insurmountable.  But you know how you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time.  Give what you can, please.  I know times are tough.  Times were pretty tough for me, too, and are pretty tough for young men and women learning how to use prosthesis, getting skin grafts, having wounds washed out.

Donate if you can, please share the message with others.  Get your friends to give what they can.  Write about it on Facebook and twitter.  Call in to a radio or TV show.  Spread the word. Spread the love. Spread the hope.

Thank you.

NY’s Ed Koch Backs Repub In Weiner Race: “Vote for GOPer a vote for Israel”

Pic via NY Daily News

The NY  Post calls it “a blow against O”:

In “a shot across President Obama’s bow,” Democratic former Mayor Ed Koch yesterday urged voters in Queens and Brooklyn to make “history” by voting for the Republican candidate to replace randy ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner in the Sept. 13 special election — as a protest against the White House’s policy on Israel.

Koch — a staunch ally of Israel — said he would “vote for Bob Turner” if the Republican-Conservative candidate backs Israel and opposes cutbacks to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

“If Jewish New Yorkers and others who support Israel were to turn away from the Democratic Party in that congressional election and elect the Republican candidate to Congress in 2011, it might very well cause President Obama to change his hostile position on the state of Israel and to re-establish the special relationship presidents before him had supported,” Koch said in his weekly commentary.

***

“I want to put a shot across Obama’s bow,” Koch said in an interview.

He is furious with Obama over the president’s public push to get Israel to use its 1967 borders as a starting point for negotiations over a Palestinian state.

***

Koch’s comments are an early headache for Assemblyman David Weprin, the Democratic candidate handpicked to replace Weiner, who resigned in disgrace amid a sexting scandal.

As expected, Weprin yesterday received the endorsement of the union-backed *Working Families Party. He got the backing of the Independence Party over the weekend.

*The Working Families Party is an ACORN front group, previously co-chaired by Bertha Lewis while she was the Executive Director of New York ACORN.

Obamanomics Working Like Gangbusters All Across The Nation!

Of course I’m going by Obama’s nuanced definition of “working”… Obama: Job Losses “Evidence” Stimulus Worked…

(CNS News) — Three days after the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the national unemployment rate had ticked up from 9.1 percent in May to 9.2 percent in June, President Barack Obama said that the loss of jobs in the public sector is “evidence” that his $830-billion economic stimulus legislation worked.

“Now, without relitigating the past, I’m absolutely convinced, and the vast majority of economists are convinced, that the steps we took in the Recovery Act saved millions of people their jobs or created a whole bunch of jobs,” Obama said at his Monday press conference.

You know what I’m absolutely convinced of? The “vast majority of economists” are brain addled crack addicts…because they keep supporting Obama’s disastrous policies. Or….possibly they’re just very, very left wing economists? Could that possibly be?

Because, as I recall, there were a few economists who weren’t convinced that the Stimulus was a good idea.. For instance, Harvard Economist, Dr. Robert Barro, one of the most influential economists in the world, the 200 economists who signed a full-page ad in the New York Times opposing the Stimulus, and oh! The Congressional Budget Office, who warned that the “stimulus”  would be harmful over the long haul. They were far the only ones, and they turned out to be right, too – unless you use Obama’s nuanced definition of success…

But who cares what a teeny tiny fringe minority like they think.

Bottom line: The “vast majority” of Marxist economists agree with Obama, so there.

Here are some recent headlines that demonstrate how well the Stimulus “worked”, using Obama’s record of complete failure as proof:
