Earth Day 2012 Fizzles — Badly

In what should be seen as a hopeful sign that global warming/climate change hysteria in the United States has finally, mercifully, all but petered out, none but the most die hard Gaia- worshippers convened on the National Mall, Sunday, for the big Earth Day festivities.  Organizers reportedly had expected “tens of thousands”, but in reality the event attracted only – tens.

Newsbusters reported:

Monday’s Washington Post gave the badly-attended Earth Day rally on Sunday a whitewash on the front page of the Metro section. “Earth Day stands up to the rain,” was the headline, as reporter Tara Bahrampour said rain “didn’t stop the die-hards.” Online, the headline was funnier: “Rains don’t water down Earth Day enthusiasm.” The Post offered no attempts at a numerical estimate.

But at Examiner.com, ‘DC Green Business Examiner” Douglas Canter was more straightforward: “Earth Day Networks, which sponsored the event, expected tens of thousands of people. By midafternoon, about 40 people, including [Frisbee-throwers] Nick, Antonio, and a CNN crew, hovered near the stage awaiting the remainder of a long list of scheduled speakers and bands, including the Reverend Jesse Jackson and R&B singer Ledisi.”

He added: “About 50 yards away, several hundred people walked on the muddy grass and stopped under about 20 partially covered exhibits. Many were operated by companies that promoted their products.”

So let’s review: Earth Day organizers expected “tens of thousands” and drew 40. It received a large color photo (mother with child, avoid the “crowd” shot) and a front-page Metro story. In January, the March for Life turned out tens of thousands and it received two large color photos (one of an opponent) — one of and a front-page Metro story (and avoided a crowd shot). Post ombudsman Patrick Pexton nudged this quote from Post local editor Vernon Loeb: “In retrospect I wish we had given readers a better sense of the overall magnitude of the march. . .it was far larger than 17,000.”

Actually,  it was nearly 500,000.

The March for Life is always massive – and it’s always massively ignored by the MSM.

As Newsbusters reported, CNN barely Covered the March for Life, but hyped the much smaller Earth Day rally…

CNN prides itself on being a serious news network, but it submitted itself to being a simple megaphone for the Earth Day organizers. Correspondent Josh Levs admitted as much after airing a YouTube video that laid out the goals for the Earth Day movement.

“We have really stunning images to help you understand the extent to which the world has changed. So we want you all to know all about this. The kinds of things that they’re calling for on Earth Day, the kinds of things that are going on out there, and what the events are,” said Levs, who also directed the audience to links about the day on Facebook and Twitter.

One of the goals laid out by the movement, that CNN relayed to its cable news audience, was “trying to build a green economy and getting more green policies up there.” Such a goal could be considered a political agenda, but CNN had no problem carrying water for the movement.

“Earth Day 2012 activists want to pressure world leaders to address pressing issues like endangered wildlife, Arctic melting and air pollution,” noted anchor Don Lemon later on during the 6 p.m. hour.

Even with nodding approval and encouragement from the MSM, Earth Day Failed abysmally.

You get the full gist of how badly it failed from the Green-friendly blog, Freetaste: Celebrating Earth Day 2012 in Washington D.C. (photos) where you can view pic after pic of tens ones of people “mobilizing” to “save the earth” by building a “green economy”, etc. etc…

Always popular with environmental types, Captain Planet would have been a “crowd pleaser” if there had been a crowd.

Tents were set up but hardly anyone  was around to check out the Green wares inside.

“The wet weather may have discouraged people to attend,” the blogger speculates.

“A band performs despite the small turn out of audience at the National Mall,” he reports.

“Earth Day celebrants braved the cold and wet weather.”

Okay, ENOUGH. It’s APRIL. How cold can it be? If Pro-lifers can get hundreds of thousands year after year in January, what does it tell you about the excitement and dedication of enviros to their cause, that hardly anyone showed up for what was supposed to be a massive rally, because of a little rain. “April showers” are not wholly unexpected events, you know.

One Saturday, last April, in fact, I had the opportunity to tour DC with my oldest daughter, and guess what – it was raining cats and dogs for the whole day. Did that stop us? No, it did not. We just put on our rain coats and toured the Capitol in the rain – and had fun doing it.

Feb of ’09 saw the birth of a new conservative, grass roots movement in US politics – the Tea Party. It was in its infancy all across America.

In Kansas City, we held our very first tea party in a snow storm. The weather could not have been worse – really. And because we were conservatives, we’d never protested anything in our lives… but we believed in what we were doing.

I’ll never forget this grim faced girl:

History has proven us to be right. The Dems’ massive Stimulus did nothing to improve the economy, Obama’s spending on one boondoggle after another has been a disaster for this country. His “investments” in green energy  have been particularly egregious.

With  increasing numbers of people finally becoming aware of the Malthusian and Socialistic  nature of Climate Change fraud, coupled with Obama’s  massive Green Energy failures (at taxpayer expense),  it’s no wonder even Greenies allowed the rain to give them an excuse not to participate in Earth Day, this year.

Video: Piers Corbyn: Global Warming “Delusional Nonsense” Lobby About To Collapse

The Canadian government announced on Monday that it was formally withdrawing from the Kyoto protocol on climate change, a move it had telegraphed for weeks.

The Wall Street Journal reported:

Canada’s Environment Minister Peter Kent made the announcement, just hours after returning from United Nations-sponsored climate-change talks in Durban, South Africa. At that meeting, delegates from almost 200 countries agreed to draft a new global emissions treaty by 2015.

Even before heading to Durban, the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper had said Canada would not make a second commitment to the Kyoto treaty, under which the former Liberal government in 1997 pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 6% below 1990 levels. Kent said the Kyoto pact was a relic of the past, and was futile in combating climate change because it didn’t incorporate the three major emitting countries of China, India and the U.S.

“It is now clear that Kyoto is not the path forward for a global solution to climate change. If anything, it is an impediment,” Kent told reporters at a media conference in front of the Canadian legislature. “This decision formalizes what we have said–that we would not implement the Kyoto protocol.”

Meteorologist, astrophysicist, consultant, and owner of the business Weather Action, Piers Corbyn, was interviewed on Russia TV, and said he hoped that Canada’s move would herald the complete collapse of the global warming lobby, calling it “delusional nonsense founded on fraud”:

Canada’s Environment  Minister noted he wouldn’t “be surprised” if other countries follow in Canada’s footsteps in pulling from Kyoto.

Weekly Standard: Climategate (Part II):

Before anyone had time to get very far into this vast archive, the climate campaigners were ready with their critical review: Nothing worth seeing here. Out of context! Cherry picking! “This is just trivia, it’s a diversion,” climate researcher Joel Smith told Politico. On the other side, Anthony Watts, proprietor of the invaluable WattsUpWithThat.com skeptic website, had the kind of memorable line fit for a movie poster. With a hat tip to the famous Seinfeld episode, Watts wrote: “They’re real, and they’re spectacular!” An extended review of this massive new cache will take months and could easily require a book-length treatment. But reading even a few dozen of the newly leaked emails makes clear that Watts and other longtime critics of the climate cabal are going to be vindicated.

How inconvenient.

Awesome: CFACT Parachutes For Truth at Durbin Climate Conference With Climategate II Banners (video)

CFACT (the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow) is an organization that was created in 1985 to promote a positive voice on environment and development issues.

Its co-founders, David Rothbard and Craig Rucker, believed very strongly that the power of the market combined with the applications of safe technologies could offer humanity practical solutions to many of the world’s pressing concerns. A number of leading scientists, academics, and policy leaders would also agree with them and soon joined their effort, along with thousands of citizens from around the country.

Today, this Washington DC-based group is a highly respected organization and its voice can be heard relentlessly infusing the environmental debate with a balanced perspective on environmental stewardship.  With an influential and impressive scientific advisory board, aggressive collegiate program, CFACT Europe, United Nations representation,  Adopt-A-Village project, Global Social Responsibility program, and “Just the Facts” national radio commentary, CFACT has and continues to offer genuine positive solutions to today’s global challenges.

The organization has been termed “invaluable” by the Arizona Republic, it has been lauded for its “effort to bring sound science to the environmental debate” by a former president of the National Academy of Sciences, and has been praised by a respected Boston Globe columnist for “a record of supplying absolutely solid information.”

They garnered widespread media attention at the UN climate change conference after parachuting the truth about Climategate 2.0 onto a Durban beach.

CFACT held a press conference with Senator Inhofe and released Climate Depot’s new “A-Z Climate Reality Check” special report.

Video: Obama Throws Some Global Warming Alarmism In His UN Speech

The President felt the need to push global warming alarmism in his speech  to the United Nations General Assembly, Wednesday, Sept. 21.

. . .To preserve our planet, we must not put off the action that a changing climate demands. We must tap the power of science to save those resources that are scarce. Together, we must continue our work to build on the progress made in Copenhagen and Cancun, so that all of the major economies here today follow through on the commitments that were made. Together, we must work to transform the energy that powers are economies, and support others as they move down that path. That is what our commitment to the next generation demands.

Faced With Widespread skepticism, Warmists Hit Panic Button

Read Gabriel Malor’s excellent take-down of this latest nonsense at AoSHQ: Newsweek’s Global Warming Fearmongering Isn’t Science, It’s Science-Fiction

That is Newsweek’s latest cover and it comes with a hysterical fantasy from the so-called science editor. The article is one of those piece of media paranoia that is so wrong it is hard to know where to start. Since I haven’t got time to fisk the whole piece, here are five obvious errors.

Read it all. Basically, you have to be nearly brain-dead to fall for Sharon Begley’s fear-mongering.

The New Eugenics

Wanna take a stab at what the eugenics movement has shape-shifted into?

James Delingpole unabashedly spells it out in his latest post at The Telegraph:

As I note in my really-quite-soon-to-be-published book Watermelons, the values of the eugenics movement and of the modern green movement are closely connected.

Here, for example, is a popular 50s environmentalist called Harrison Brown in a book called The Challenge of Man’s Future (1954), discussing how to make the human species healthier:

“Thus we could sterilize or in other ways discourage the mating of the feeble-minded. We could go further and systematically attempt to prune from society, by prohibiting them from breeding, persons suffering from serious inheritable forms of physical defects, such as congenital deafness, dumbness, blindness, or absence of limbs.”

Brown, you’ll have gathered, was a keen eugenicist. Well, fine: so were lots of people back then, despite the setback their junk-science philosophy experienced with the end of Nazi Germany. But the point about Brown is that he was not just some ordinary bloke of no consequence: he was and is revered by many in the modern green movement as a key philosophical guru.

Among his biggest admirers is John Holdren, the green activist who is now President Obama’s Director of the White House Office of Science And Technology Policy, aka his Science Czar.

In 1986, Holdren edited and co-wrote an homage entitled Earth and the Human Future: Essays In Honor of Harrison Brown, in which he claimed:

“Thirty years after Harrison Brown elaborated these positions, it remains difficult to improve on them as a coherent depiction of the perils and challenges we face. Brown’s accomplishment in writing The Challenge of Man’s Future, of course, was not simply the construction of this sweeping schema for understanding the human predicament; more remarkable was (and is) the combination of logic, thoroughness, clarity, and force with which he marshalled data and argumentation on every element of the problem and on their interconnections. It is a book, in short, that should have reshaped permanently the perceptions of all serious analysts….”

As the author of this damning essay on the subject notes, as recently as 2007 Holdren was reiterating his admiration for Harrison Brown’s noxious views.

I’ve always thought it noteworthy, that so many of the same folks who were on   “the population bomb” bandwagon, are on board the global warming bandwagon, as well. I think they’re still motivated by their Malthusian outlook, but have decided to take a different tact to stem the human tide, using climate alarmism as their pretext.

Holdren, let it not be forgotten, is also the author of this chilling paragraph, from a book he wrote in 1973 with fellow neo-Malthusian doom-mongers Anne Ehrlich and Paul Ehrlich, called Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions:

“A massive campaign must be launched to restore a high-quality environment in North America and to de-develop the United States. . . . Resources and energy must be diverted from frivolous and wasteful uses in overdeveloped countries to filling the genuine needs of underdeveloped countries. This effort must be largely political”

I came to the same conclusion Delingpole did, after researching the powerful forces behind climate alarmism:

SalemNews.com: Magnetic Polar Shifts Causing Massive Global Superstorms

(CHICAGO) – NASA has been warning about it…scientific papers have been written about it…geologists have seen its traces in rock strata and ice core samples…

Now “it” is here: an unstoppable magnetic pole shift that has sped up and is causing life-threatening havoc with the world’s weather.

Forget about global warming—man-made or natural—what drives planetary weather patterns is the climate and what drives the climate is the sun’s magnetosphere and its electromagnetic interaction with a planet’s own magnetic field.

When the field shifts, when it fluctuates, when it goes into flux and begins to become unstable anything can happen. And what normally happens is that all hell breaks loose.

Magnetic polar shifts have occurred many times in Earth’s history. It’s happening again now to every planet in the solar system including Earth.

The magnetic field drives weather to a significant degree and when that field starts migrating superstorms start erupting.

The superstorms have arrived.

Read it all, but take it with a grain of salt.

Monday Links: Climate Fraud Edition

As winter storms and record cold temps bare down on much of the northern hemisphere, UN approved climate scientists and their allies in the media give us their one-size-fits-all explanation: global warming.

As Doug Ross notes, “some junior cub propagandist at The New York Times named Judah Cohen is in full Blizzard Explanation Mode.

The esteemed New York Times, preferred public relations newsletter of the Democrat Party, is literally lying its ass off to cover for the United Nations’ disastrous global warming scam.

What is supposed to pass for science at the “newspaper of record” are quotes like: “We’re freezing not in spite of climate change but because of it.”

And IBD describes  The Abiding Faith Of Warm-mongers:

No matter what happens, it always confirms their basic premise that the world is getting hotter. The weather turns cold and wet? It’s global warming, they say. Weather turns hot? Global warming. No change? Global warming. More hurricanes? Global warming. No hurricanes? You guessed it.

***

Why do we continue to listen to warmists when they’re so wrong? Maybe it’s because their real agenda has nothing to do with climate change at all. Earlier this month, attendees of a global warming summit in Cancun, Mexico, concluded, with virtually no economic or real scientific support, that by 2020 rich nations need to transfer $100 billion a year to poor nations to help them “mitigate” the adverse impacts of warming.

This is what global warming is really about — wealth redistribution by people whose beliefs are basically socialist. It has little or nothing to do with climate. If it did, we might pay more attention to Piers Corbyn, a little-known British meteorologist and astrophysicist who has a knack for correctly predicting weather changes. Indeed, as London’s Mayor Boris Johnson recently noted, “He seems to get it right about 85% of the time.”

How does he do it? Unlike the U.N. and government forecasters, Corbyn pays close attention to solar cycles that, as it turns out, correlate very closely to changes in climate. Not only are we not headed for global warming, Corbyn says, we may be entering a “mini ice age” similar to the one that took place from 1450 A.D. to 1850 A.D.

For more on Piers Corbyn, see The American Thinker: The Winner of This Year’s ‘Best Climate Predictor’ Award (Clue: It Wasn’t Al Gore!)

Back in November, when the Met Office was still doing its “mild winter” schtick, Corbyn said it would be the coldest for 100 years. Indeed, it was back in May that he first predicted a snowy December, and he put his own money on a white Christmas about a month before the Met Office made any such forecast. He said that the Met Office would be wrong about last year’s mythical “barbecue summer”, and he was vindicated. He was closer to the truth about last winter, too.

He seems to get it right about 85 per cent of the time and serious business people – notably in farming – are starting to invest in his forecasts. In the eyes of many punters, he puts the taxpayer-funded Met Office to shame. How on earth does he do it? He studies the Sun.

Here’s a fatalistic Lord Monckton, sounding the alarm on the agreement that came out of the  Global Warming Summit in Cancun:

After Cancun, world government is a fact. It is here. It is real. It is costly. It is unelected. It is powerful. It will grow. It will be resented. It will be hated. But it will not easily be dislodged.

It is easy to establish a bureaucracy, provided that one has – as the Secretariat has – near-unlimited amounts of other people’s money to pay for it. But it is all but impossible to kill a bureaucracy once it has become established, except by revolution.

How will the world government develop? The EU, whose officials were present at Cancun in unbecomingly large numbers, is the role-model. Once a sufficient critical mass of taxpayers’ cash and governments’ consent has been won – and, at Cancun, the Secretariat won all that it had so long planned for, and more – the momentum of the panjandrum becomes unstoppable, like a snowball rolling down an endless slope, growing ever larger as it crushes everything in its wake.

Just like the FCC internet power grab, which took place right before Christmas, changes will not be noticed at first. This is how the left operates…

Congress will still be elected, but it will increasingly be subject to and answerable to the new world power. Few will notice at first: the media will not – will not – tell them.

This is what he had been warning us about since the Fall of 2009, and apparently it came to pass in Cancun.

Two more articles worth reading at Watts up With That?

Things we don’t know – about climate by Paul Murphy:

So what do we know? We know that many of the people warning us of the horrible consequences of human caused global warming haven’t been the disinterested scientists they’ve pretended to be – basically from Hansen and Jones to Gore and Waxman most of the more deeply committed have shown themselves deeply corrupted. That’s sad, but even sadder is the hidden reality: that knowing Mann and Bradley made up the hockey stick to defend a lie doesn’t tell us anything about global climate change – it just tells us things we didn’t want to know about them.

Most people, of course, know the numbers don’t work but rationalize accepting alarmist conclusions anyway because they think that “greenhouse science” – the belief that increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will cause traumatic global warming – is settled; and so see the lack of response to increasing atmospheric CO2 in weather data as a reflection on the quality of the data, not the theory.

Basically these people assume the wolf to justify the alarm: picturing Gore et al as yelling “Wolf!” because “greenhouse science” proves the wolf – and then excusing the business of rather obviously drawing improbable conclusions from inadequate data as laudable and necessary moral sacrifice by experts committed to rousing the rest of us to action.

Unfortunately the science on greenhouse gas effects is not only not settled, the claims made for it seem rather more likely to be wrong than right.

Climate Change and the Corruption of Science: Where did it all go wrong?

Bernie Lewin examines why climate science was able to become so corrupted. One reason:

Noble Cause or ‘Virtuous’ Corruption

The legitimation of activist-science helps to promote what is called ‘noble cause corruption’. This is the term used in the context of criminal investigations, where, for example, evidence might be planted in order to convict a criminal of a crime that the investigator has no doubt he committed. (Such corruption is portrayed famously by Orson Welles in A Touch of Evil.) As this sort of corruption manifests in the sciences, Aynsley Kellow has labelled it ‘virtuous corruption.’ This is where we would have scientists genuinely believing in the truth of AGW quite prepared to manipulate, distort and misrepresent their research in order to promote this truth in the face of formidable opposition from powerful vested interests (read: ‘Big Oil’ etc) attempting to obscure the truth with their own distortions, misrepresentations and lies.

Some choice snarkage from Doug Ross: This Just In: President Obama To Receive Nobel Prize In Physics For His Achievement In Containing Global Warming

On June 3, 2008, then-candidate Obama predicted these dramatic, curative changes: “This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

It’s time to reward the President for his prescience and leadership in helping defeat the scourge of global warming. Only the Nobel Prize of Physics is a prestigious enough award for his work.

They told us that if we elected Obama, the sea levels would stop rising.

• Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal have sunk beneath the waves in the latest stunt by environmentalists to illustrate the risks of climate change.

Greenpeace immersed models of iconic global structures in the sea off Cancun where United Nations talks on global warming are going on.

Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace International Executive Director, said the action was designed to highlight the risks of global sea level rise.

He said if the talks fail then global temperatures could rise by more than 2C (3.6F), risking sea level rise of up to 6ft 5in (2m), causing devastation in small island states.

Extreme weather events will also impact towns and cities in the rich world.

“Climate change knows no borders, it does not discriminate. The rising tide of climate impacts, be they economic, environmental or humanitarian will affect each and every one of us – rich and poor. Here in Cancun, government Ministers can still choose to steer us towards a bright and safe future, “ he said.

Insanity.

See Watts Up With That for rebuttal: Is the warming in the 20th century extraordinary?

Frank Lansner answers that question in a guest post:

Conclusion:

Nature has provided us with data telling a simple story: For periods on earth comparable with today, we see many examples of temperature increases in the magnitude of 1 K for all kinds of natural reasons. Very rarely does any temperature rise (via supposed positive feedbacks) reach 3 K within 100 years. It is thus surprising that IPCC and others with big confidence can claim large temperature rises of up to 3 – 6 K as most likely result from just a minor temperature increase, for example induced by CO2 warming.

Please go to WUWT to read the research that lead to his conclusion.
