Blue Man Group Sued By Audience Member

I think the guy has a case:

Audience participation is a staple of the Blue Man Group. But apparently, one audience member attending the Chicago show believes cast members took their surreal antics too far by forcing a video camera down his throat during a performance in October 2006.

James Srodon of California filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the group.

In the lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court, Srodon says the Blue Man actors used the “esophagus cam” to project an image of Srodon’s mouth and throat onto a large screen for the audience’s amusement.

The lawsuit alleges the Blue Man actors circled him, held his neck and arms and “forced his head back” to insert the camera. It claims he was restrained from removing the camera from his mouth.

What goons!

“At the time the ‘esophagus cam’ was inserted into plaintiff’s mouth, it was covered in food, liquid and grime from the Briar Street Theatre floor, including the thick blue paint used to cover the actors’ faces,” the lawsuit said.

Srodon, who contends that the camera injured his mouth, throat and dental work, is asking for more than $50,000 for “battery, negligence, and negligent infliction of emotional distress”.

Another Point Of View:

Enas Yorl:

Oh please. I’ve seen this show three times – they don’t actually shove the thing down the person’s throat. It is pre-recorded footage that you see. He probably already had messed up dental work and figures he can get a fat payday out of this. BMG will probably drop this gag from their shows because of this jerk.

Well, it will all shake out in court, I guess.

  1. I actually went to the Chicago show last April.
I thought the whole camera down the throat thing was fake and that they really filmed it prior and pretended to stick it down the audience members throat.

I’ll admit, I would not be thrilled having that happen to me. I’m glad I didn’t get picked.

  3. Oh, and this happened over two years ago and he’s just now figured out that he had a problem with it. Jerk. Complete kneebiter.

  4. It’s a great show, when we saw it, my wife was the one picked out of the audience, not for the camera thing, but for the twinkie bit. She must have been onstage with them for a good ten minutes.
After the show, people kept coming up to us and assuming we were in on it.
    It was a blast.

  5. Bmac – no way! That’s probably the funniest bit in the whole show. Did she taste that goop? If so, what was it like?

  6. The goop was apple pie insides, which they gave to us in a giant Chinese take out box.
We also got the poloroid they took onstage, which I framed with the tickets.
