McCain’s CPAC Speech

Well, before I look at any other reactions and add links, I want to get my own reaction out there.

I thought it a solid speech. I think his tone was just right, and he won over the somewhat dubious crowd.

He secured my vote in November.

But I realize I’m easy. The question is what do the  “anyone but McCain” folks think? I realize that there are some who will never vote for him…but has he won over any of the hardcore anti-McCain conservatives?

—Be back shortly….

UPDATE:

Hot Air has the text of the speech, and reports that  MKH and Geraghty liked it, Hugh Hewitt and Geraghty’s readers loved it.

I’m glad that I’m not the only pushover…

…Be back shortly…

Where’s Ace?I thought he was going to be live blogging the speech? I guess “everything didn’t go well”.

RedState gives the speech a thumbs up.

Freddy Freddoso at The Corner is not impressed. He’s supporting “real conservative” Ron Paul.

Kathryn Jean Lopez makes a great point:

It Needs to Be Said:  This McCain speech would not have been given today, if it weren’t for folks like Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Andy McCarthy, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham. Can I thank them on behalf of America?

Barry Out West has written a dissertation on MDS, and explains why McCain has his vote.

Allahpundit sounds a leeetle cynical about McCain’s claim that he respects the opposition of amnesty opponents….You can view that part of the speech at Hot Air.

You can color bmac  unimpressed as well:

I listened to it.
Just cause he’s calling himself a conservative doesn’t magically make it so.
Saying what CPAC wants to hear is meaningless, his record more than speaks for itself. Total B.S.
I just cannot get behind this guy.

Geoff at Uncommon Misconceptions weighs in, lol.

A little levity is needed at times like this…

Mickey Kaus makes some good points on McCain’s CPAC Suck-up.

  1. Hey Deb I have some thoughts on “anyone but McCain” at my spot if you’d like to check it out.

    Sorry for the shameless blog-pimping.

  4. Sorry folks but I for one couldn’t wake up and look myself in the mirror if I were to vote for this guy. If there is one thing McCain has ever been know for during his lifetime it has been his consistently in knifing his own in the back.

Just as John Kerry built his career by degrading and slandering the military, John McCain built his by betraying and derailing those he supposedly supported. It is his trademark.

Whether it be in exchange for medical treatment in Vietnam, his wife when he returned, the taxpayers in the Savings and Loan crash, the American worker in favor of the Illegal Alien, American Business over tax cuts, or the Republican party over Filibustering Judicial Appointments, this man has betrayed them all. It is what his record says that is fact, not the claims he makes now.

I for one am of the opinion that there is no longer a least worst choice to be had. We are now presented with two socialists and a psychopathic rat. I can find no concernable difference in the three, beyond the foreign interests where their true loyalties lie.

  5. I haven’t listened to the speech. I am somewhat impressed that apparently conciliatory words came out of his mouth, because I frankly didn’t give him that much credit. But…I’m pretty firmly in the ABM camp and I’m going to have to think about this one for eight months or so.

Tell you what ISN’T going to win votes for McCain: McCain’s supporters being rude and insulting to people who have serious reservations.

  6. NiceDeb,
It was a good speech and extended the olive branch. He has a bit to go, but he knows that. I’m sure that he also knows that conservatives will not sit on the sidelines and give Bill and Hillary the keys to the White House.

From a military perspective: I’m in the VIP airlift business–been doing it for many years. The disdain that the Clinton administration felt for the military is well documented, but for the airmen in the 89th Airlift Squadron–they had to live it on every flight. I’ll feel real sorry for those guys/girls if the Clintons get back in.

On another topic: Now that the Republican nomination is in the can, why no talk of us voting for Clinton in the Primary’s? Hate to say it, but she is probably more beatable than Obama! at this point.

  8. She’s by far the more beatable of the two, but I still think she’d win easily. For a while, I was cruising along with the idea that she wouldn’t be THAT bad, policy-wise (if she thought the mullahs needed a bomb or two dropped on them, do you think she’d hesitate?), but then I remembered…the corruption. The Clintons are like the worm in the heart of the Republic. Some things they might do we might never undo.

I’m thinking go with Obama and hope he’s completely ineffectual.

  9. He’s further to the left than she is…and would feel he has a mandate to impose all sorts of socialistic policies on us. If he won, he would have a mandate.

    We can’t let them win.

  10. Too soon for me to say, I’ll need to watch him for a while and his veep choice.

phat, in a former lifetime I worked closely with Airmen in the 89th. Fine people, every one of them.
