The must read of the day is from former Lieutenant Governor of NY, Betsy McCaughey, who warns of the stealth health care provisions in the Porkulus/Patronage Package AKA Generational Theft Act which is on the verge of being passed in Congress:

Tragically, no one from either party is objecting to the health provisions slipped in without discussion. These provisions reflect the handiwork of Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Health and Human Services Department.

Senators should read these provisions and vote against them because they are dangerous to your health. (Page numbers refer to H.R. 1 EH, pdf version).

Seniors hardest hit:

Daschle says health-care reform “will not be pain free.” Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. That means the elderly will bear the brunt.

Medicare now pays for treatments deemed safe and effective. The stimulus bill would change that and apply a cost- effectiveness standard set by the Federal Council (464).

The Federal Council is modeled after a U.K. board discussed in Daschle’s book. This board approves or rejects treatments using a formula that divides the cost of the treatment by the number of years the patient is likely to benefit. Treatments for younger patients are more often approved than treatments for diseases that affect the elderly, such as osteoporosis.

In 2006, a U.K. health board decreed that elderly patients with macular degeneration had to wait until they went blind in one eye before they could get a costly new drug to save the other eye. It took almost three years of public protests before the board reversed its decision.

Ironic, isn’t it? Seniors are the ones Democrats try to scare every election cycle: those evil Republicans are going to take away their health-care. Yeahp.

As long as I live, I will never understand why our fellow citizens continually fail to understand that greater government involvment in ANY process simply increases delays, inefficiency, costs, and frustration for those forced to run the government created maze like rats seeking a piece of cheese. The only equality that these ‘reforms’ will establish is that of mediocre care, and the increase of misery by the rationing of services.

  2. It is difficult for me to believe that we are headed for a socialistic government as rapidly as we are. It has been forcasted that Democracy lasts about 200 years and I would predict we have reached the end of the line. I wish our present government leadership would take the time to read and reread our founding fathers wise words when our form of government was crafted. I would guess few have taken the time to read and understand what is meant by “Government for and by the people.”

  5. People in congress don’t have a clue how most Americans are struggling. Health care is rising just for us to go to a Dr. is $100.00. Health care insurace is so expensive. They can’t understand why we don’t buy a car how can we. Congress don’t buy cars, they just fly in there planes. They don’t pay any health insurance or Dr. bills. I wish they would get out among the people and see how the average American lives.

  6. This is the most blatantly ignorant, discriminatory, and inflammatory comment I’ve heard in a long time. No, let me change that. It is ONE of the most ignorant….., especially ever since Obama got into office. What’s he going to suggest next – that when people reach a certain age, they just wander off by themselves, never to be seen or heard from again? Daschle, you’re treading on dangerous ground. Your statement hints at “weeding out” of certain segments of the population. What’s next? People with disabilities? Would you counsel people with disabilities that they should be “more accepting of their conditions?” Remember, you may have money, you may have health insurance, you may have all the niceties that life can offer. But even you, like the rest of us, will have to face judgment day. Politics should not be about getting all you can get while you can get it. Politics should be about doing the right thing. Shame on you. You should be hanging your head in humility and giving thanks for all the benefits you have been blessed with.

    Seniors aren’t the ones sapping money out of the health care system. What about drug addicts, alcoholics, smokers, speeders and reckless drivers, criminals, illegals, etc., etc., The seniors were the ones who, for years, paid taxes so that the other “health care sappers” could take advantage of it. Then, you expect seniors to “just be accepting” because people like you treat the elderly as if they are invisible, and no longer viable. I’ve heard a lot of disgusting things lately, and this ranks right up there with the most disgusting. Makes me wonder if Daschle’s favorite movie is Soylent Green……………

  7. Daschle’s comment on how Senior people should be more accepting of their conditions instead of receiving treatment for them is one of such appalling ignorance.

    Pain, excruciating pain, untolerable pain, is plain unexceptable. And not to treat it, whether it be the pain of a child, of a teenager, of a young adult, an adult, or of “the wiser,” (my expression for elderly…makes more sense and at least it means something: it means, the people who know better) is not only heartless, cruel, but totally devoid of political responsability.

    Responsability to the people, ALL the people, yes Daschle, including “the ones” that have put a man with such an ignorant comment as yours, into the world.

    I bet that the mere idea of living with the symptoms of a good dose of arthritis (painfull enough at it is, may you be fortunate enough not to suffer from any other diseases along with it…) installed in his joints once he “hits the Seniors decades,” eludes him totally.
    See how he’ll go about merely “accepting his condition” then…!

    Obviously this man has never suffered much physical pain nor has he been witness to the suffering of a loved one, and far and foremost, he surely has forgotten a little detail: one day HE WILL BE IN THE GROUP of the people who as he says,: “should accept their conditions instead of being treated for them”…

    … let’s check back with him in some years, see how he feels about this dum quote then!

  8. Mr. Daschle sounds an awful lot like he’s flippantly telling our seniors, “Let them eat cake,” when he says that seniors need to just live with their illnesses and pain. Too bad, so sad, la-di-da. He’s a fat cat in Washington and he doesn’t have to worry about any of that because he’s one of the Ivory Tower elites, so what does he care who of us out here hurts?

    Mr. D is the embodiment of the democrat arrogance and flippancy. People had better pay attention closely to everything they have said and done since they gained their much-coveted power over this country. They are revealing themselves blatantly, flying high on their ego trips and running rough-shod over the people who have helped build this country and who have risked their lives to keep it free.

    They are revealing their inability to respect and care for the elderly, who were once young and part of the work force and defense of this country. They are ingrates to the core and who in the UNIVERSE keeps re-electing these arrogant, heartless monsters, anyway? I sure haven’t.

    Democrats in government love the killing of unborn children and now reveal that they would just as soon see the elderly suffer and do us all a favor by dying so they won’t be a drag on the system anymore!   9. To come back to the idea of all politicians bringing their lunch bags with them to work (like most Americans), instead of having expensive dinning out meetings, as a quick, simple and easy way to cut on government expenses…

  11. While there are many improvements needed in health care, better diagnosis and treatment for seniors should be on the list for improvment. Many seniors see several specialists with no one to coordinate their medications. Many don’t know about preventative treatments available. And, as people age they tend to have more conditions that need careful diagnosis with appropriate time to discuss the senior’s illness with not only the senior but also with their family. This requires extra time from the health care staff which is not always available now.

  12. How can Congress, with good conscience, agree to reduce the care given to the ‘seniors’ who have worked and earned the health care we now have. Medicare premiums are going up and the coverage is diminishing. Many of us have Medicare Advantage coverage which determines what will be taken care of for us and many of those companies are denying certain procedures to seniors. How can Congress be thinking of allowing health, ( and many other benefits) for people here illegally while taking away from the people who are American citizens and have earned the right to health care. Mr. Daschel does not have to worry since anyone who has ever been in Congress has lifetime health coverage. The rest of us don’t. Those seniors who have taken care of themselves and are relatively healthy, should not be denied that coverage. For those people who are illegally here or refuse to take care of the precious life they have been given, ie alcoholics, drug addicts, drunk drivers, people randomly shooting at anybody whom they don’t like,etc.etc are the ones who should be denied treatment!!

Daschle does have a point, we cannot continue to waste tens of billions uopn the last few months of life, where now currently every extrodinary treatment, no matter how expensive, intensive, and unlikly to work is routinely expected and applied. And we cannot afford to keep thousands of near-death patients with multiple terminal diseases like AIDS, HEP C, diabetis, chirrosis and heart disease, (some of them comatose intensive care patients) alive by artificial means for years, so that their relatives can continue to collect their welfare and SSI payments. There is widespread abuse of this system and it really needs to be looked at. And some hard judgments will have to be made now, or in the future. (Sura 2:29)

We can kill the old and sick, the infirm, the sick babies, mentally deficient people. Why waste all that money on them when you could have it for yourself? We going to start with your grandmother?     I’m sure you would have loved to have killed my father-in-law who had diabetes, was a double amputee–whoaaaa, I’ll bet that cost a bundle. He had cancer twice and he had the nerve to go and live 90 years, taking up all that money!

    Can’t waste all that money on sickly people. The government needs it to waste on bailing out all their irresponsibilities that have put this country in the mess it’s in now.

    Personally, we are sick of the government ramming all their snake oil salesman, have-they-ever-got-a-deal-for-us schemes down our throats, hiding all that pork and pet projects in with things that might make a small difference and then trying to tell us it’s all above-board and look what heroes they are for saving us from it all. I’m thinking once you fall below the 50% “probability of surviving the next 6 months of an illness”, you’re outta here under the new plan…..but if it were debated in the House and Senate to make our representatives plan EXACTLY the same as what they would use as the lowest level care (i.e. the elderly) in their socialized medical plan, this bill would quickly disappear.

  17. I think the senators that go along with this should receive the same health care as they plan to give the elderly, that would change their tune.
    I watched my step-father be destroyed by the broken ill-managed health care system we have now. In 9 months they took a man who was still working part-time, in his 70’s, and killed him through mismanagement of his care in nursing homes that supposedly were staffed by skilled nurses. And NOW your telling me your going to reduce the care they get. Good God!

    The baby boom generation is arriving at the age of wisdom and they can still vote. Be very, very careful how you write the provisions for health care for seniors. Grey Power will take on a whole new meaning in the next few years.

    Not so fast Vee, don’t try to put words in my mouth. There is a titanic waste and fraud in the hospital system that keeps alive comtose people for decades for the profit of it and the welfare their families get while they are alive. I used to be in hospital administration and my sister, mother and exwife are all working nurses now for thirty years and see it day in and day out in nursing homes and intensive care units. Advanced staged Aids patients with diabetis and heart trouble who are so psychotic they have to be restrained because they don’t know who or where they are and regularly try to committ sucide, i.e., when they are able to. They require the most intensive cardiac care available, along with their expensive aids drugs and numerous other drugs for all kins of other reasons, as well as 24/7 intensive (and expensive) nursing care, and the use of million dollar machines used to continually to keep them alive often artificially. So don’t you dare tell me I’m inhumne, if you what you were talking about you’d agree, but since you don’t, why don’t you just shut up about something you are totally ignorant about and let those who are informed do the talking.

I didn’t tell you you were inhumane, you deduced that from what I said. There are no easy answers for the “miracles” in medicine that leave us in the mess we’re in today. We were talking about what Tom Daschle said about the elderly needing to just learn to live with their infirmities because there’s not enough money to take care of them and that’s a cavalier, heartless thing for him to say to us, when all kinds of illegal aliens are getting welfare and medical services free. Daschle wasn’t talking about the same people you are mentioning above. The government has all kinds of money to bail irresponsible people with our money. It has all kinds of money to make sure the illegals get taken care of and then tells American Citizens who, with their jobs, contributed to the US Government all their working lives that they’re tough out of luck and there’s not enough money to take care of them? There’s no way in the universe that that’s all right with me. My father-in-law fought to keep this country free and later in life, lost the sight in one eye to glaucoma, got diabetes, which gave him macular degeneration. He lost one leg and then the other to poor circulation from the diabetes. He was in his right mind until he died. I’m sure that cost a lot of money. He’s the kind of people Daschle was talking about, not the people you mentioned. His attitude is, when people get old, they are worthless and should do us all a favor and go ahead and die and the government should help that along. Nice.

Personally I feel old Tom should come down with an old timers malady so severe it affects his ability to function, not given any medicine to alleviate the symptoms and maybe hung by his BBs until he screams for help and changes his mind and stops making such statements based solely upon ignorance.     The latest chain e-mail sent to us from a reader puts some words into the mouth of former Sen. Tom Daschle that raised our eyebrows. Daschle, you may recall, was once President Barack Obama’s choice to be secretary of health and human services. He stepped down from consideration amid revelations about tax problems, but some think his fingerprints can be seen in some of the health provisions in the economic stimulus package signed by the president in February.

    According to the e-mail (read the full text here ), Daschle was quoted in a Bloomberg story saying, “Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them.”

    We thought that sounded a bit impolitic, and fairly callous, for a former senator to say, and so we decided to check it out.

    As with most e-mail claims, it starts with a grain of something.

    Bloomberg did run a story about health provisions in the stimulus package on Feb. 9, 2009, under the headline “Ruin Your Health With the Obama Stimulus Plan: Betsy McCaughey.” It was a commentary piece written by Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York and an adjunct senior fellow at the Hudson Institute.

    McCaughey warned that the stimulus included several troublesome provisions identical to ideas outlined by Daschle in his 2008 book, Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis. Midway through the article, McCaughey includes this paragraph:

    “Daschle says health care reform ‘will not be pain-free.’ Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. That means the elderly will bear the brunt.”

    We contacted McCaughey to see which parts of this were her words and which were Daschle’s.

    The phrase that health care reform “will not be pain-free” is a direct quote from Daschle, she explained.     We think it’s a stretch to summarize Daschle’s position as saying that seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. Not treating wrinkles is one thing. Not treating, say, heart disease, is another. But that’s fair enough for McCaughey to opine. This is labeled an opinion piece. The point is that these are McCaughey’s words, not Daschle’s.

    The last sentence, “That means the elderly will bear the brunt,” was her conclusion, McCaughey said.

    McCaughey said she is a meticulous scholar and “I regret any misrepresentations made by others of my work or Mr. Daschle’s views.”

    Our efforts to reach Daschle for comment were not successful.

    In the chain e-mail, quote marks are shifted, clouding the issue of who is actually speaking, and the e-mail suggests that Daschle actually said that.

    The e-mail begins: “Apparently, seniors are expendable — treating us is not worth the expense (unless you’re a congressman!).

    Then later:

    Tom Daschle was credited today by Bloomberg with the following statement.

    Bloomberg: “Daschle says health-care reform will not be pain free.
    Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age
    instead of treating them.”

    The e-mail ends, urging, “Please use the power of the Internet to get this message out. Talk it up at the grassroots level. We have an election coming up in one year and nine months. We have the ability to address and reverse the dangerous direction the Obama administration and its allies have begun and in the interim, we can make their lives miserable. Let’s do it!”

    A few shifted quote marks make all the difference here. Instead of McCaughey’s words, they become Daschle’s. That kind of thing may have made for ’70s sitcom gold, but here it just muddies the debate. We rule the claim in this e-mail False.

  34. What a totally ridiculous plan!!! That is heinous. Why not LIMIT how many children women receiving ‘WELFARE’ can have, say 2 or maybe 3 children and any children produced thereafter WILL NOT be covered by ‘WELFARE’ (i.e. OUR TAX DOLLARS) Some years ago I worked in ‘Child Support Enforcement’ where one single woman listed “9” possible fathers of ONE child. This is what American’s work for? It’s a JOKE!!! And I won’t even get started on the ILLEGALS. But the better choice according to Daschle is letting our ELDERLY ‘accept’ their illnesses and roll over and die and live in pain/suffering. I myself have an incurable blood disorder (rare) and about every year or so I HAVE to go in the hospital to have blood transfusions for 2 or 3 days. If I don’t get blood I will DIE. I am 59 yrs. old and not ready to die.

Hi Gypsy, We must be related–I’m with you all the way, but the health plan is the democrats’ way of telling older people to “Line up to be gassed,” without actually having to gas us, yet, anyway. Why should they want older US citizens to keep on living when they have all those illegal aliens they want to give US taxpayers’ money to? Only the best for them.   36. Instead of solving healthcare costs on the backs of the elderly why not get serious and look for real solutions. I am all for health care for everyone, but I don’t want to pay for a corrupt medical system and for people who rely on drugs that they wouldn’t need it they lived healthier lifestyles.
    If we want a sustainable health care system it is vital to get Nutrition Education back into the schools.
    We need to insist that the medical industry practice preventative medicine that includes good nutritional counseling.
    Those who wish to live unhealthy life styles are the ones who should learn to accept and live with their conditions. Find incentives so people will want to stay healthy.
    Doctors need to stop pushing pills and get to the bottom of symptoms. The pharmaceutical industry needs to be reined in and not allowed to advertise all of their “designer” drugs on TV and stop giving doctors bribes for pushing their products.
    The FDA must be made accountable and stop allowing bad chemicals to be added to our food because of payback from corrupt food industry lobbyists.
    And equally important; stop adding fluoride to our drinking water. It is a toxic by-product and people have the right to decide if they want to use it or not. Forcing everyone, even those without teeth, to drink toxic waste is ridiculous and causes a lot of health problems that have been kept under wraps for years. Tell the people the truth about fluoride; ingesting it doesn’t help keep teeth healthy and causes serious health problems like cancer and other life threatening diseases. Get rid of fluoride in our drinking water and you will see health care costs go down.

    The Daschle quote is an urban legend. Further, having lived half my life in Canada I can debunk the whole “old Canadians are left to die” hyperbolic BS. My neighbor lived to be 99, was offered *knee replacements at 93* (he declined, but at 96 said he should have listened to his doctor and taken them) and received complete and unlimited healthcare all along. My Canadian father in law is 83, he gets absolutely no restrictions to his medical services (recently had minor surgery on his toe, for example).

    Were you aware of the fact that Americans spend more money on health-care per capita than anywhere in the world (approximately six thousand dollars), yet 16% of Americans cannot use it, because they don’t have insurance?
    Also, only 30% of doctors are paid according to the quality of the health-care they provide.
    Do you know why wait times for non-electives surgeries are so low in America? It’s because most of you guys aren’t getting any care at all and don’t have regular physicians.

    And despite the vocal minority that’s professing that Obama’s health-care reform is an indication that he’s the anti-Christ, the majority want change. Yes, most of you are dissatisfied and only 16% aren’t. I’ll do the mathematics for you: 84% of Americans want change and just over a third of them want a complete revolution.

    So while you complain about Obama’s ideas for reform, get over yourself and start thinking about the 48 million Americans who don’t have access to this so obviously AMAZING system. And they’re suffering because of YOUR capitalist obstinacy.
