Neda’s Family Expelled From Their Home

Another outrage. I can’t even imagine what this poor family is going through.

The Iranian authorities have ordered the family of Neda Agha Soltan out of their Tehran home after shocking images of her death were circulated around the world.

Neighbours said that her family no longer lives in the four-floor apartment building on Meshkini Street, in eastern Tehran, having been forced to move since she was killed. The police did not hand the body back to her family, her funeral was cancelled, she was buried without letting her family know and the government banned mourning ceremonies at mosques, the neighbours said.

“We just know that they [the family] were forced to leave their flat,” a neighbour said. The Guardian was unable to contact the family directly to confirm if they had been forced to leave.

The government is also accusing protesters of killing Soltan, describing her as a martyr of the Basij militia. Javan, a pro-government newspaper, has gone so far as to blame the recently expelled BBC correspondent, Jon Leyne, of hiring “thugs” to shoot her so he could make a documentary film.

I watched the video of Neda accidently because for the most part any videos I have seen come out of that whole geographical area makes me leery to watch, but this one was awful and that vision of her dying will stay in my minds eye for my life. I only wish there was something we could all do other then hoping something changes. I am Canadain and so thankful for that because I will never know what its like to be born in a place where my life is not my own. I cannot believe that the American government is not stomping down as they seem to have done for lesser causes (oil) but not for freedom of the people of countries who repress and murder. All I know is we all need to stand up somehow, someway….This is frightening to me. I am so saddened for Neda and her family..My frusteration is that I can’t do a damn thing to change anything in Iran.

  4. Tracey, we didn’t go to war in Iraq for oil. We did so because in the days after 9/11, we found the the outlaw Hussein regime too threatening to stand by and allow it to violate UN mandates. Iraq is now a Democratic country because of President Bush.

    It can be convincingly argued (and has ) that the student uprising in next door Iran was inspired by the free elections in Iraq and Lebanon.

  5. Hey, I know exactly why Bush went to war in Iraq. We all have our own opinions on that matter and thats what makes us a country that doesn’t kill people for speaking openly our opinions. I am so tired of this bantering about why Bush went to Iraq…He was a walking disaster and his intent was shadowed by deceit and his idiotic way of communicating with his country anyway that isn’t why I commented about Iran…Watching Neda die was horrific and the world seems to think people in that end of the world don’t have mothers, brothers, fathers, sisters or don’t know what love or hate is…I just wish everyone could come to the realization that we all bleed and we all need to give everyone a chance to be heard and free.

  6. Tracey, you’re wrong about Bush, as all of Obama’s recent flip flops on his policies should make plain. You are buying into left wing propaganda when you say he was deceitful.

    There’s no doubt that he was not the best communicator in the world, but that’s no reason to despise him.

  7. I don’t despise him! I just think he had a real problem with reality. No doubt you are a Bush supporter which is fine. I am not. Nor am I an Obama supporter. There is more to presidency then race, age or lack of being a communicator. I just think in the west we have no concept or idea what it is like to live in these places with no rights, but to march in to get rid of a dictator monster is not enough, it goes deeper then that. For every Sadam, Hitler or Bush for that matter there is a hundred others just waiting in the wings to corrupt and torture people and dictate and thats where my disagreement comes in. We don’t see much about Iraq on the news anymore and that is scary to me because we tend to forget and thats when the Sadams sneak in. Anyway I am saddened by the plight of the Irans, Iraqs and all the rest of the countries that suffer as we watch in the comfort of our homes. All I can say is we were all just lucky by being born in the geographic areas we were.
