Obama To Give Speech To Nation’s School Children September 8

Just when you thought this administration couldn’t get any creepier, it has outdone itself:

President Obama’s Address to Students Across America September 8, 2009
PreK-6 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students Across America
Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education
September 8, 2009

Before the Speech:
• Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions:
Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?
• Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.
• Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?
During the Speech:
• As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following:
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?
• Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?

There’s much more on the PDF file, including suggestions for teachers to assign classroom projects like having the children “write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the President. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make the children accountable to their goals”.

Are they kidding me?! Not just no, but HELL NO!!!!

This is most likely part of:

Obama’s Plan To Dissociate 9/11 From Republicans And Turn It Into A Day Of Radical Community Organizing

I have three kids in grades K-6. They will be staying home on 9/08, and they will be exempted from any follow-up activities.

More thoughts:

Obama MUST know that this is going to alarm many parents. He can see that his approval rating has been taking a nose dive. He surely understands that some schools and teachers will participate in his program more that others. Does he not see the conflict this is likely to cause?

I believe he does:

How Obama Is Pitting Americans Against Each Other

From page 31 of  Generating Social Capital, a scholarly  look at civil society and institutions:

Repressive governments disturb civic development in two major ways; First, they discourage spontaneous group activity, and second, they discourage trust. Even though totalitarian governments, such as communist regimes, mobilize civil society through party, and other governmental organizations, association is always state controlled, and not always voluntary. Generally, authoritarian, and totalitarian governments seem partially to build on their strength on the foundation of distrust among their citizens. A good example of this can be found in the activities of the German Democratic Republic’s state-secret police which pitted citizens against each other, and provoked tight social control of friends, neighbors, and colleagues, and even within families.

OKAY,  WHAT THE HELL’S THIS?:

(Have students) create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails marked with the labels: Personal, Academic, Community, Country. Each area could be labeled with three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and academic so community and country goals come more readily.

HUH?

Um……no.

Obama has no business “community organizing” our kids.

MORE from the Foundry, on The Obama camp’s habit of pitting Amerians against each other:

Today, President Obama’s campaign organization “Organizing for America” sent out a notice to its “grassroots” supporters. It asked them to wage a coordinated phone campaign for health care by calling their U.S. Senators on September 11 – also known as Patriot Day in honor of the thousands of Americans killed by Al Qaeda terrorists eight years ago. It goes on: “All 50 States are coordinating in this – as we fight back against our own Right-Wing Domestic Terrorists who are subverting the American Democratic Process, whipped to a frenzy by their Fox Propaganda Network ceaselessly re-seizing power for their treacherous leaders.” Please read that again.

Typically when this type of outrageousness is unleashed on the American public, the appropriate response is to recall the webpage and explain the gray area, with phrases such as ‘that was taken out of context’ or ‘we didn’t mean that conservatives were actually terrorists’ or ‘that was written by a junior staffer who has been admonished’. But that should not be sufficient this time. There are several lessons America must learn from this:

Bipartisanship: Rather than rally our nation, which is certainly more divided than ever, they seek to make those divisions even more distinctive this September 11. The President often talks about reaching across the aisle, working with people of differing viewpoints, but that rhetoric is not matched by this reality.

There are several lessons America must learn from this:Bipartisanship: Rather than rally our nation, which is certainly more divided than ever, they seek to make those divisions even more distinctive this September 11. The President often talks about reaching across the aisle, working with people of differing viewpoints, but that rhetoric is not matched by this reality.

Zealots: This type of irresponsible rhetoric can make dissent against the President seem dangerous. Down the road, the President could paint his detractors as nothing more than right-wing zealots bent on destroying his vision for the nation. Remember, these ‘zealots’ are not smuggling weapons, they’re smuggling poster board and markers. They’re not flying planes into buildings; they’re flying to see their parents for Thanksgiving.

Free Press: How does it help our nation to rally against a free press? If Fox News doesn’t report the story as the White House sees it, does that make them a “propaganda network” as it says on today’s release? Who are the “treacherous leaders” that Fox News is reporting to by the way? These questions need answering.

Memorial: September 11 should be a day to grieve and remember, not a day to lobby for government-run healthcare. It certainly should not be a day to demonize fellow Americans. America’s enemies are violent extremists, bent on bring this nation to its knees, not soccer moms, dads and senior citizens who may disagree with one’s political or policy views.

That is why my kids will have nothing to do with Obama’s community service initiative. They have poisoned the well to such a degree that I can see nothing that comes from this administration in a positive light.

……Something tells me The Glenn Beck Show is going to be a doozy, today.

UPDATE:

I now believe I was jumping to conclusions when I assumed that his address would be related to his odious attempt to turn 9/11 into a “National Day of Service”.

The speech appears to deal primarily with the importance of a good education, and the children’s educational goals, however, without being able to see the text of the speech beforehand, it’s impossible to know what else might get sneaked in. The main problems are the “Dear Leader quality” of the unprecedented Presidential address to schoolkids, and the Dept of Education’s creepy accompanying curriculum.

WH deletes line about schoolkids helping Obama from speech prep materials

The more objectionable talking points for the  teachers/administrators from the Dept. of Ed. website have been scrubbed.

The Washington Times:

President Obama’s plan to inspire the nation’s schoolchildren with a video address next week erupted into controversy Wednesday, forcing the White House to pull out its eraser and rewrite a government recommendation that teachers nationwide assign students a paper on how to “help the president.”

Presidential aides acknowledged the White House helped the U.S. Education Department craft the proposal, which immediately was met by fierce criticism from Republicans and conservative organizations who accused Mr. Obama of trying to politicize the education system.

Why would the White House be involved with helping the the Dept. of Education craft the teacher recommendations?

Fox News:

Christina Erland Culver, former deputy assistant secretary for education, said presidents have traditionally addressed classrooms on the first day of school, but the problem with the event was the accompanying materials from the Department of Education.

“That’s where they kind of got into a slippery spot. Federal statute denies any authority to the Department of Education to provide any kind of curriculum or anything that can be passed down to the state, and that’s part of the statute forming the Department of Education. So they kinda got themselves into this mess because they didn’t really understand some of the key legal roles or the dos and don’ts at the federal Department of Ed,” she said.

One more thing:

I had previously thought that only grades k-6 would be participating. It turns out that there are also teacher guidelines for grades 7-12.

UPDATE:

IMAO gives us a worst case scenario. Don’t be too alarmed…this probably will not happen.

  1. “like making the children “write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the President. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make the children accountable to their goals”.

That’s the part that freaks me out the most. I am so glad that my kids are too young to go to school.

  2. Does the history of Hitler and the rise of the Nazi party seem to be repeating itself? Hitler started by indoctrinating the children. PARENTS! WAKE UP AND PAY ATTENTION. I would suggest that if you don’t want your children to participate, the let your school know that your child will not participate or they will be absent that day! I plan on keeping my grandchildren from being indoctrinated!

I probably wouldn’t have a problem if the President of the United States spoke directly to school children if we stepped back in time…let’s say Ford, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton or Bush II. I absolutly have a problem with “Dear Leader”. He has over-reached in everything he touches. His radical views and the radicals that advise him should cause every parent to question his motives. This is really creepy, no, scary. “Let’s take over everything in the United States of America…including the children”….America…..WAKE UP!!!!!

  5. Agree: strange, and seems to me, narcissistic. As a teacher, I’d be burned at taking valuable class time to do these antics.
For a president, it is just plain weird when it comes to a “leaving a legacy.”
It may backfire in the end: adult students I used to teach English to who had grown up in communist or ‘soft-communist’ countries were the most stubborn and least co-operative. Can’t prove it, but maybe being forced to do ‘activism’ for the sake of activism in school made them sick of it?

  8. I just found out about this today and I have 3 girls in elementary school. The part of all this that really has me concerned is that this “lesson plan” does not clearly explain what he is going to be addressing our children about. I also feel that our education system is in enough distress without detouring the fundamental lessons with self promotion by Obama. I plan to go to the school tomorrow and speak with the administrators about this and if they are participating, my daughters will not be attending school September 8. You would think a man who is the leader of the free world would have more sense than to take valuable learning time from our children for his own selfish reasons. Stay away from my children, Mr. Obama!

Obama has chosen a page from the playbook of McDonald’s, Burger King, etc. I believe he is hoping that his irresistable oratory skills will somehow supplant the enticing combination of trans-fat and the happy meal prize, thus motivating the little darlings to vocalize the Dear Leader’s agenda (think whining child in the car within 2 hours of meal time). Their intellect is, by definition, still developing……and, he believes, is ripe for his picking. My kids are going to school that day first, because our school system is full of liberal teachers and administration who would ‘label’ kids for further ‘consideration’; and second, because I believe my kids need to see this for themselves. This is historical. This is unprecedented. And they will better understand the backlash that is coming.

  26. Geez folks…talk about sour grapes! If Bush was scheduled to address the children you would be on cloud nine. Disliking the man’s politics is one things. Equating him with evil, sinister plot is simply not fair. Quite frankly, it makes you sound like the loonies at the town hall meetings. The protest at those meetings dredged up the old image of the Republican Party as a haven for racists. The progress Palin made during the election of including more people in the Republican party was dashed with cold water by the irrational and disrespectful screaming during those meetings.
I’m still trying to imagine what would have happened if a large number of angry minority protesters had shown up to town hall meetings during the Bush presidency and behaved the same way. I’m pretty sure the local police would have arrived in full riot gear before the protesters ever even had a chance to get in the building.
I’m still trying to see how the green movement is something from which your children need protecting. Ditto for community service. Next thing you know the kids will start recycling and there will be mayhem! :0)
I’d worry more about the garbage the children are watching on tv, the sexting msgs the children are sending, and the fact that 1/2 of theyouth are out of shape and overweight like their parents. Listening to what the President of our country has to say should be the least of your worries. I did not like George W Bush. I did not vote for him. HOWEVER, I always gave him the utmost respect that he deserved as leader of our country. In case you hadn’t noticed, Obama did win the election and is now PRESIDENT OBAMA.
Attacking him for anything and everything he says does nothing, but to divide our country further. Causing the President to constantly play defense may amuse you, but in the end it is WE THE PEOPLE who will suffer. And Lord knows our country has suffered enough during this recession.

  28. A democrat:

There’s so much wrong with your comment, I don’t even know where to begin.

First of all, if Bush had decided to address the nation’s children while they were a captive audience at school, I would have thought it not a good idea. We live in a very politically divided country, and you know as well as I do that the left would have screamed bloody murder however benign his message was.

At any rate, schools should not be having children watch a political figure’s speech, and participate in the accompanying lesson plans. This is NOT APPROPRIATE in a free society.

Obama has slashed and burned through all of his political capital, and fewer and fewer people, after watching the almost daily outrages coming from his administration, trust his motives. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you are willfully blind. But, trust me, more and more eyes are being opened.

As for the town hall protesters, you expose yourself as a loon by calling them loonies. These are frustrated citizens who are tired of being lied to. Their opposition to Obamacare represents a majority of Americans, and congratulations on somehow entering race into the issue. Well done.

If a large number of minority protesters had shown up at the town halls? They would probably have gotten a lot more media attention, and it would have been much more sympathetic.

  29. While President Obama receives stinging criticism for his recent announcement of a national address to school students, President Ronald Reagan gave a similar speech to students as he was winding-up his second term in the Oval Office. The nationally-televised dialogue with students — which was held in November, 1988 — resembles the scheduled Obama event in many ways.

In the early afternoon hours of November 14, 1988, President Reagan, seated in the White House State Dining Room, proclaimed that he was “particularly pleased to be talking to American students” and then added “a special hello to those of you who are watching on C-Span.”

While the Obama speech is focused on education, Mr. Reagan started with a short speech that centered on government, democracy and free elections:

the most important thing you can do is to ground yourself in the ideas and values of the American Revolution. And that is a vision that goes beyond economics and politics. It’s also a moral vision, grounded in the reverence and faith of those who believed that with God’s help they could create a free and democratic nation.

The President then opened-up the floor to students from Washington’s Jefferson Junior High School.

The questions were tough — from gun laws to the line-item veto.

Mr. Reagan explained why it was important to continue Republican policies.

In the case of Obama, the criticism can best be noted by remarks from Florida Republican Chairman Jim Greer:

As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology. The idea that schoolchildren across our nation will be forced to watch the president justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies; increasing taxes on those who create jobs; and racking up more debt than any other president, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power.”

The entire text of Reagan Event:
Remarks and a Question-and-Answer Session With Area Junior High School Students

    November 14, 1988

The President. You know, this is a real treat for me — having you here and to have, in a little while, the chance to answer some of your questions. Let me also offer a special hello to those of you who are watching on C-SPAN and — or the Instructional Television Network. Thank you for inviting us into your home or your school today.

This marks the beginning of American Education Week, and I’m particularly pleased to be talking to American students in this, the first in a series of speeches that I’ll be giving before I leave office. But before we begin here, I have a special message from my roommate. She says to please — for your families, for your friends, for your country, and most of all for yourselves — just say no to drugs.

Now, last week the United States did something so exceptional that people around the world marveled at it. Last week the American people freely elected our government. Some ballots were cast by people who were rich and famous, and others were cast by most ordinary people, but each person had the same, one vote. These ballots were cast in secret, and they were counted in the open, not the other way around. And when the votes were totaled, those holding or seeking the highest positions in the land all surrendered to the will of the people. Soon, power will be peacefully transferred from those leaving office to those taking office. And, yes, we do this every election year, and that’s what so much of the world marvels at. What we in America take for granted is something that’s rare in history and all too remarkable on this globe, the Earth.

The United States is the world’s oldest democratic government. And at my age, when I tell you something is the oldest in the world, you can take my word for it; I’m probably talking from personal experience. And it’s not just that our government is the oldest of its kind, but that it’s based on the world’s most revolutionary political idea. You can see that concept in the very first line of our Constitution, and it begins with three simple words: “We the People.” In other countries, in their constitutions — they all have constitutions, and I’ve read a great many of them, those other ones — and the difference is so small, but it’s found in those three words. Because their constitutions are documents by the Governments telling the people what they can do. And in our country, our Constitution is by the people, and it tells the Government what it can do. And only those things listed in the Constitution, and nothing else, can Government do. So, in America, it is the people who are in charge. And one day you’ll be those people out there voting and creating the Government.

That vision of self-government was the basis for the American Revolution, the first revolution of its kind and one of the most important historic events not just for our own nation but for all humanity. Because most revolutions have always just been a case of replacing one set of rulers for another set of rulers. Ours was that kind of a constitution where, for the first time, it was announced — what I’ve told you before already — that the people were in charge of the Government, not the other way around.

Now, the Revolution may seem like something they say happened a long time ago — to me 200 years seems just like yesterday — but I think it’ll prove to be America’s most important guidepost for the future. I believe that the chief moral task for America in your generation — a period destined for great change — will be not so much to chart a new course or launch a new revolution, but to keep faith with the original American Revolution and that remarkable vision of freedom that has brought us two centuries of liberty and is still today transforming the world.

Over these 200 years, country after country has followed our path, and I believe that ultimately all nations will do so. It’s no exaggeration to say that the political vision of our Founding Fathers has become the model for the world. This is true not just in the many countries that have turned from despotism to democracy these last years, it’s also true even where it’s least apparent. It’s remarkable

  30. there is a huge huge huge difference between Reagan and Obama. He visited the school and televised it. He gave full opportunity to be made a fool. Free speech and choice. Obama plans to televise his speech. One way from him out to the kids. No rebuttal and no way to be challenged. That’s propoganda true and true. And then he chooses the day after Labor Day, the first day of school? What so parents have to send their kids to school and see his propoganda video? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck. There are huge differences between the way Obama does things and anyone before him, Dem or Repub. Obama is neither one. He’s a community organizer. Isn’t that what a Communist is? Someone who organizes the community? Creates a communal society? Communism through and through.

  31. In his Inaugural Address, JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country”. This statement was widely admired. It was widely considered a good thing for youth to be inspired to think how they might be of service to others.

Now Obama wants to speak to our youth, urging them to study and to stay in school. He proposes an exercise, that they write a letter to themselves outlining their goals and ways in which they might meet their goals of helping themselves, their community, and their nation. (Incidentally, Benjamin Franklin did this when he was a boy.)

But, as usual, the Right Wing has lapsed into tinfoil hat paranoia: using the authority of his office to urge kids to study, stay in school, develop goals, and think about how they might meet those goals is seen as such a vile assault that parents intend keeping their young out of school that day. Some are complaining to school administrators, demanding that the speech not be broadcast or that their kids be exempted from any class discussion of the speech.

I used to be a teacher, so let me tell you what will happen if you do those things. 1) You will be identified as a goofy parent and laughed at in the Faculty Room. 2) Your child will be singularized among other children. 3) Any future concerns you have will be taken less seriously by the school.

Parents, don’t use your kids to make a political statement; this never ends well. If you are worried about the speech, go to school and listen to the speech yourself, then discuss it with your children. I doubt that Obama is going to recruit children to the Muslim army or give them the Secret Code of the Anti-Christ. You may find that your fears are groundless.

Then why are they taught all the different governmental branches and political parties in almost every history/social sciences class they take until graduation? What about the Government class students their senior year have to take in order to graduate (government dictated), which shows political biases and speeches so that they can learn from it, not be brainwashed. He’s not going to be preaching Democratic theory, he will be discussing the importance of education and volunteering/community service etc.

I am very interested in what he has to say, it doesn’t mean I will follow his every wish and command he brings up. Ignorance, on the other hand, makes you sound like these people commenting above

Overloading the schools and districts with phone calls to retaliate to something they had nothing to do with sounds very low and immature. Really? Being taught about the different branches of government is the same thing as making the kids sit still for a President’s address, and then work on projects where they describe what they can do to “help him”.

Learning civics in high school is comparable to reading elementary school aged kids a book about Obama, as the curriculum suggests? Have you even looked at the Dept. of Ed PDF files? While some of the more objectionable content has already been scrubbed, much remains not to like.

And guess what? The fact that the radicals in the Dept. of Education has seen fit to remove some of their suggestions in their curriculum suggests that we are right.

Like people before stated, if you’re that concerned just talk to your kid afterward and discuss your biased opinions with him or her so they can grow up to be ignorant, mayhem-raising, disruptive members of society just like you.

And does “helping him” really seem that bad? He or she might make a goal to want to pass his/her classes or go to college or volunteer somewhere. What will you do then? Helping him to make this country a better nation, one not so divided over excessive and unnecessary slander and hostility seems a lot like what a president should be doing. And America’s citizens should be coming up with supportive and beneficial ways to do this, not attack every idea and title it socialism/communism/anti-christism/whatever else you can think of to scare others.

Especially at a time where we are economically and in terms of war and national defense, Americans should be working to bring this country together not arguing amongst ourselves to make it fall apart.

  53. diana, the spam bucket has no bias, unless I’ve put your IP in the spam column, which I’ve not.

I have no idea if Reagan did this or not, but if he did, it set an unfortunate precedent because not every President’s motivation for addressing kids in school could be interpreted as benign as Reagan’s and Bush Sr’s no doubt were. Both Reagan and Bush Senior were men of sterling character.

The same cannot be said of Obama.

There are reasons why conservatives worry that Obama’s intentions aren’t good.

Starting with the campaign, we’ve seen a pattern of lying, and Chicago style bullying of political opponents rarely seen in national politics, if you somehow missed this, you weren’t paying attention. Beneath the “Hope and change”, Yes we can” rhetoric” there has been a very dark and sinister underbelly.

If you want documentation of this just click on my Obamessiah category and read all of the posts going back to Jan. ’08 when I got the first inklings that Obama wasn’t the moderate, post racial sweetheart he was being billed as. That was when I saw that he had spearheaded the opposition to the Illinois Born Alive Infant Protection Act, voting against it several times, even after he helped reword the bill to match exactly the Federal version of the BAIPA (which passed unanimously). After Obama left the IL Senate, it passed there unanimously.

What kind of person fights so hard against babies ALREADY BORN? Then lies about it?

The question: Do babies fully born but of questionable viability “get human rights?” Obama didn’t answer “Present” to the question, as he so often did, but a resounding no, four times.

Then during the “08 campaign he lied repeatedly about it.

    But that’s just one thing.

I would go on to chronicle his lies throughout the campaign, until around September when I grew weary of it. No one cared.

I also chronicled his legions unsavory supporters and associations, radicals, communists/socialists/marxists, anti- Semitic pro Palestinians, you name it. Glenn Beck has picked up where I left off. Believe me. He is on to something. Michelle Malkin has already been able to write a 400+page book about the corruption in the Obama administration after only what? 6 or 7 months?

The Chicago style thuggery, corruption, the deceit, and his Marxist agenda are what the concerned parents are looking at.

These are people who have been paying attention.

What it in fact says is :
“Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short‐term and long‐term education goals. Teachers would collect and redistribute these letters at an appropriate later date to enable students to monitor their progress.”

Seems like quite a large difference. People might want to look at the actual documents instead of others’s summaries if this is the type of distortion going on.

Even if Reagan and Bush did the exact same thing, people have two problems with this particular incident.

Problem one is that the text isn’t being released to parents beforehand so that they can make a decision about their child(ren)’s participation.

Problem two is that the administration presumes to send out curriculum guidelines asking children to write essays about “how to help the President”. (That’s been scrubbed, but the fact that it was there in the first place is troubling.)

Legend or Visionary?!Which ever, we will pay.
I, for one, teach my children the value of education, respect for authority, appreciation for their government, and their understanding & love of God. I teach these values at home as well as in public. I teach them to stand up for theirselves and others and to speak out when they know in their hearts that something is not right! Their minds are not fully developed yet so “I” help & guide them. The Presidents job is to run the Country not my children. They are too young to be brow-beated by an over zealous teacher or a socialistic President with his own idolatry agenda. Please don’t tell me or others who don’t agree with your presidential choice…because he’s black is why I don’t support him. That is growing so old! I’ll let you in on a secret…He is of two races. Someone who claims to be concerned about our youth would not support abortions including many of his policies that will destroy their future and America that you and I have so proudly benefited from.
Many of you have mentioned to Opt out or go listen with them. I am concerned that my children as well as others will be treated with disrespect from teachers, school, and friends. Since Obama has a lesson plan to last well beyond the half hour(through out the year) They will be left out. Not a good feeling for any child!! Secondly, since I am a working mother with increasing demands and stress of todays economy, I, as I am sure so many other concerned parents, can not just tip toe off to my childs school from my employer, as mine believes that it is better to work overtime to ensure that my family is taken care of. 99. Hey Summer-

Were you one of the democrats who protested when GHW Bush spoke to school kids? Did you help call for an investigation by the GAO claiming it was all political and shouldn’t be paid for with tax dollars?

  100. I wasn’t trying anything other than to point out the absurdity of people like you who keep saying that there is something racial or nefarious about conservatives complaining about the leader of one of the most partisan administrations ever while ignoring the fact that liberals did even more when GHW Bush spoke to school kids.

Had Obama not tried to tie a lesson plan which was intended to have students focus on how they could support his agenda and had he released the text of the speech when he announced he wanted to give it there would have been much less concern. Don’t lose sight of the fact that the lesson plan was changed only after people complained and the White House agreed it was inappropriate.

  101. JackStraw,

Please be advised that I am not in disagreement with the lesson plan being changed and the like because it IS inappropriate to force children to buy in to political propaganda of any sort. My post had nothing to do with that (and if you revisit the post you will see I said nothing about the speech) but rather the “absurdity of people like you” who fail to see that many of the unecessary epithets hurled about have less to do with the issues and more to do with our inherent racist ideologies.

    Deb, read a book Love.

Are you actually coming here and complaining about “people like me” using epithets? Perhaps you should repair the holes in your glass house before you start throwing rocks.

I love how Obama is bringing everyone together.

  103. I think our school handled the whole thing pretty well. My daughter (5th grade) needed permission, and my son (8th) grade had a form allowing him to opt out. I told them that anytime the President of the United States wants to talk to them, they should listen. He is the President.

But we also talked a bit about why people were upset, and how important it was that they make up their own minds about things. So this afternoon we’ll review their impressions of the speech, and how much of the lesson plans were implemented. I’m expecting that they’ll retain pretty much nothing, and that the classwork will be pretty banal. But eternal vigilance is the price of freedom, so we’ll go over it anyway.

  104. I think that if people like Summer are going to start flinging about the old “white privilege” schlock, then we ought to just go with it. I’m tired of chasing the goalposts, where even though I’ve supported minority rights all my life, now I’m guilty for things I cannot perceive. It’s easier just to say “heck with it” and stop worrying about the lot of minorities, especially since I’ll get yelled at no matter how much I do.

Thanks, Summer, for helping widen the racial divide.

  105. JackStraw,

I’m not sure if you are aware of this but the “people like you” are words that came from your post to me. Secondly, the uneccessary epithets I was referring to are those like, “troll” “clowns”, etc. Now if in any of my responses I referred to any of you in that way, then I think your post would be valid.

Deb, once again I say read a book Love.

Geoff, you are right, you should just go with it, it works well for you.

Thanks, Sums. Nice to see you working for racial harmony via the personal attack. With your winsome charm and diplomacy, we can look forward to race riots before the end of the term.

And in your case, since you’ve decided to call everybody racists, is any epithet really unnecessary? Intellectual lightweight comes immediately to mind.

    LOL!

You’re talking about “white privilege”? Did I just wake up in 1969?
    WTF?

So , “girl” I’m not going to waste my time arguing with you over something that you fail to acknowledge. I would also encourage you to “Learn Something”.

  108. Summer, I’m talking about the points made in my post and previous comments, including my first response to you:

Summer, please stop being so narrow minded, okay?. The race baiting has become laughably cliched at this point. Actually it’s always been laughable, but the more you do it, the funnier it gets. If you didn’t bother to hit the links in my post, or all of my comments then you’re blissfully ignorant that this is an issue of trust, given Obama’s past behavior to politicize everything, use agencies like the Natl Endowment FOR The Arts to further his goals, and make scapegoats out of political enemies. The fact that today is also just a few days away from 9/11, a day Obama is trying to turn into a day of community service doesn’t help, either. Parents who have been watching this man bankrupt the country in order to redistribute wealth are horrified, and do not trust him.

Since the speech is unobjectionable, my kids can watch it if their teachers choose to show it, (which I doubt they will). And I don’t believe the WH/Dept of Ed activities are going to be an issue because the teachers were supposed to let us know if their kids were going to do them. We’re sending notes to school to exempt our kids just in case.

And just so you know, in none of my responses to you was I “angry or emotional”, although that would accurately describe my initial reaction to the lesson plan designed to go along with Obama’s speech.

The issue here is one of trust. An increasing number of Americans do not trust the man. You should ask yourself why that is, and you should do that without inserting his race as a cause. If his race was an issue he would never have been elected.

My use of the term people like you refers to the simple fact that this thread was innundated by people who had never posted here before but somehow, as if by magic, all arrived at once to start calling anyone who was upset by the Obama speech/lesson plan intolerant bigots and racists. My use of the term people like you had nothing to do with race.

Yours did as do all your posts. It’s very obvious no matter how subtle you think you are.

  111. Deb, I agree that President Obama has made a few “missteps” if you will concerning his presidency, but EVERY president has. I take issue with the fact that many American’s have indeed blamed ALL of our country’s current ill’s on him. The reality is, we were in pretty bad shape when he took the post. Demonizing him and likening him to Stalin etc. is inappropriate and furthermore continuing to call each other names because we have differences of opinion is as well. These are the types of things that arise from privileged mentality.

Why is it I have a hard time welling up a lot of sympathy for people who are upset at Obama getting criticized when the left made blaming Bush for everything in the most vile terms for 8 years?

  116. JackStraw,

You are right, Bush was blamed for many things during his Presidency however I was not one of those people who blamed Bush for EVERYTHING particularly because he had to contend with a few things that had not happened in times past namely 9/11 and it’s aftermath. So for the record, I had a problem with many of the harsh criticisms that were launched at Bush as well.
