Nutroots Really In Denial About Massive 9/12 March In DC

Calling her “The Blind Leading The Blind”, Media Matters(not) blogger extraordinaire, Eric Boehlert spends a whole post laughing at Michelle Malkin, and the gullible wingnuts who repeated her “bogus claim” that 2 million protesters showed up on the Washington mall, yesterday for the 9/12 tea party. The 2 million number was quickly retracted by Malkin, when ABC denied reporting that figure, but it is closer to the mark than the 60,000 to 70,000 number they subsequently reported.

Boehlert makes no attempt to estimate the actual crowd size, himself, but he does offer this picture, which looks like it was taken way after the march had wound down, and most people had gone home:

mallpic

It compares less than favorably to the Obama inauguration picture, does it not? I mean, wow.

How blatantly dishonest.

Now…why would a group that calls itself “Media Matters” ostensibly because it points out misinformation, disinformation, and lies in the media, choose to use an obviously bogus photo of the 9/12 DC tea party and  compare it to Obama’s inauguration?

Why not use this picture:

None of those pictures fit the left’s narrative that the showing was unimpressive, that’s why.

Apparently, some in the nutroots are even trying to argue that the screenshot of the 9/12 march taken from a livecam of the event is somehow “fake.” Sad.

You can view CSPAN’s  2 &1/2 hours of live coverage of the march on Washington, here.

It’s almost as if the Soros brigades are in desperate spin mode, here, trying to convince their brain dead, troglodyte  followers that nothing of import happened in DC, yesterday. It was  just a small group of racist teabaggers with their shocking, shocking signs, instead of very large number of Americans who represent an even larger number (perhaps majority)  of Americans who are fed up with what the Obama administration, and  Congress have been cramming down their throats since January 20th.

*Incidentally, the crowd size is estimated to have been well over one million based on USA Today’s method of estimating crowd size, which was used for Obama’s inauguration:

usahowtojudgecrowdsizemsnbc-screep-cap-of-912-march

Moderate in the Middle concludes:

MSNBC screen cap of the 912 march, CLEARLY the crowd stretched out beyond the 1 mill point based on USAToday’s report on how to gauge inaugural attendance!

See Moderate in the Middle for even more photos from the march.

*Correction:

It’s been pointed out that the USA Today graphic is for The Mall, a large park that extends out from the capitol. The contrasting photo of the march is down Pennsylvania Ave., which is narrower.

The Examiner reported that DC police had estimated the crowd to be around 1.2 million.

Fun fact:

Liberals are filthy pigs who expect others to clean up after them.

Conservatives respect their surroundings. Littering is so tacky.

UPDATE:

R.S. McCain, who was there, has a good report on the size of the crowd:

What I’m getting at is that, throughout the afternoon, there was a continuous process of people leaving and arriving in the main rally area for various reasons. Barbara Espinosa, to cite one example known to me directly, ran down her cell-phone batteries sending photos to Steve Green and left the rally sometime after 2 p.m.

Furthermore, as I noticed when I went down to the police barricade toward the southeast side of the Capitol lawn to try to locate Cynthia Yockey, many people were wandering around on the periphery of rally. Dan Riehl arrived late, and could give an account of how many late arrivals were hindered by jammed inbound roads and the snarled-up Metro system.

All of which is to say that any given photo of the mall, taken at any time during the rally, could not possibly have shown the total crowd that attended the rally over the course of the event. Given the 450,000 number counted along the parade route, I have no problem believing that the total attendance was in excess of 1 million, but beyond that I am unwilling to hazard an estimate.

Editor’s note:

*The authenticity of the last picture I had posted was called into question, so I removed it. I’ve contacted the source to verify its legitimacy.

  1. if the media can turn the DC march into a “see they lied! they claimed we told the truth! everybody knows we don’t tell the truth!”, then they are truly degenerate organs of the state. only in some obscene perverse universe can “free press” and “journalism” claim a victory by pointing out their own lies.

Unless you wingnuts managed to blow up the Museum of the American Indian – a building that is about 3-4 years old and is NOT in this picture.

60-70,000 – thats the official estimate from DC Fire Dept., and thats what the real pictures look like. Filled up the area in front of the Capitol with a lesser density than an inaugural event.

  6. Oh, and as you can also see in that last picture, no one is on the Capitol grounds, and everyone is on the mall. Whereas in all your other pictures, (and in reality) all the people were up around the Capitol.

Our local paper, (what we call the AZ REPUGNANT), literally “threw” a chumped up version of the Chicago Tribune’s article with some small picture on page 16! And the picture just showed some people with signs, no pic’s like shown here. I am disgusted and outraged. I wrote a letter to that rag of a paper letting them know it too. We haven’t see a protest of this proportion since the late 60’s (a TOTALLY covered LIB event), and while these idiots don’t want to admit it, this made history!

  8. Joe Citizen: People were moving around.

What I’ve read is that there were really 2 waves of people. Over one mil total but not all at the same time. There was a gathering early in the day at Freedom Plaza but not all stayed for the Capitol. Then another wave in early pm for Capitol Rally.

As for the last pic: I’ve emailed a query to the source to find out where it came from.

You can say the fire dept estimated 60-70 thousand all you want. You can tell from the pics it was more than that.

The Park Police were reported to have estimated 1.2 mil.

The rich corporate media owners have been telling the american public for almost a century: stalin dictatorship is communism. communism is socialism. organising and cooperating for your rights is socialism. So if anyone tries to voice that one should cooperate to solve societal problems all the media screams “socialism”. Health care is not the problem, while you are screaming and quarreling about health care reform, everyone misses what really is going on. or what is not being done. the patriot acts have not been repealed. Guantanamo is still there. US men and women in uniform are still being killed in afghanistan and iraq. afghanis and iraqis are still being killed, murdered and injuredand die from apalling living conditions. Government sponsored Health Care insurance for those who cannot afford it a dangerous problem? Really??? what about the 3 trillions to banks? the two trillions the pentagon _lost_ and cannot find according to rumsfeld on the day before 911 2001. How about the gargantuan bloated military budgets Eisenhower warned you about? Let the poorest get some hospital will ya?

  10. The photo showing very few people at the march was actually taken of the National Mall. We did not have permission from DC Parks and DC police to use the Mall. We had permission to march on 16th Street, one block north however, and had to start at 10 am instead of the scheduled 1130 beginning time because the DC police told the organizers that we had reached “Critical Mass” and had more people at the starting point than could safely be contained. At 2 pm there were still people marching down 16th Street.
Mr. Obama, can you hear us now?

What is different is that everyday folks are learning this as a fact because many have become involved for the first time and are witnessing the false reporting and media spin being “reported” about their own personal activities and actions.

For those that wish to dismiss the patriot’s march on Washington D.C. as only a few GOP useful idiots that are not informed and only racists that hate the reality of a black president – you are very mistaken.

More over, the citizens, voters, and taxpayers that turned up in D.C. Saturday represent only a small percentage of the Americans that share their views.

I have attended several local TEA Parties in my area (Tidewater Virginia). Becuase of the costs involved in hotels and travel we were only able to afford to send 4 buses to D.C. – far more of us turn out for local TEA Party rallies then the group that went to D.C.

My family had a wedding to attend – otherwise we would have been there too.

Regardless of how media wants to spin what happened in D.C. on saturday, the American people need to take HOPE that real CHANGE is coming – and that CHANGE will result in the ousting of both Republicans and Democrats that have sold our nation down the river to serve power special interests that fund their political campaigns.

It would be nice if timestamps were on all these photos so they could be cross referenced. For one, the photo from the capitol building shows the crowd starting to fill out the mall yet it looks like Pennsylvania Ave. still is quite full. If we knew the time of that photo and could compare it to a direct shot of Pennsylvania ave at near the same time it would help.

When you look at the picture of the crowd taken from the Capitol, the crowd extends to the far side of the Capitol Reflecting Pool. That is 3rd St.

You are over-estimating the people in front of the Capitol by a large margin.

You could remove 70,000 from that crowd and it wouldn’t be noticable.

  35. I agree that media matters shouldn’t try to down play it. However even in the pictures you put up it’s not close to a million people.

All estimates were between 60-70,000. There is one picture more open with the washington monument in the back – initially it looks like there might be people stretched all the way back, but there aren’t – they are spread out sideways which makes it appear much larger than it is.

The street views don’t even come close to a million – but it doesn’t make any differnce – The organizations doing this are part of an extremist Christian movement that want a second revolution. Many of you believe in this kind of movement. But many of you are being duped into believing what is absolutely untrue. I’m from generations of republicans – not some leftist fringe group.

These Organizations are serious about using force and guns – and are purposely riling these people up into a frenzy using horrible vitriolic disgusting lies and mis/disinformation to instill fear and hatred – making them willing to “Take America back for God” – it’s creating mass hysteria and they know exactly what they are doing.

Yes there is media bias – both left and right – but the lies and mis/disinformation being told on Fox is egregious in it’s import. The facts do not back them up. In some cases they take peripheral facts and then completely distort them out of proportion. In most cases they are taking outright lies and presenting them as fact. This is new for FOX and has steadily increased over the past 2 years – i’m disgusted and appalled.

I always used to watch FOX, CNN and MSNBC – expecting from each a bias either left or right, but always when researching their facts were basically on target – w/ opinions right or left. This gave a balance for me. Never trust any media to be balanced on it’s own.

I do not know what has happened to FOX – it’s an appalling distortion of any sense of decorum or truth. These people were never news reporters, always pundits/opinion/entertainment – but it has gone much too far into insanity. Which makes for great ratings, lots of money but people don’t research the facts – they just believe what is being said. Very sad and distressing.

  37. It’s astounding to me that anyone can seriously bitch about bias at FOX while ignoring the egregious bias of MSNBC. They have become nothing more than the house organ of the Obama administration and they don’t even try to hide or deny it.

I’m not talking about the opinion commentators, Matthews, Olbermann, Madow, etc., but rather the supposed news reporters on that network. They are so far into the tank for Obama and his agenda they can’t even see out.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with Immelt being on Obama’s board of economic advisors and the fact that GE stands to make out as well if not better than any company in America from Obama’s two major initiatives, healthcare and green jobs.

FOX at least invites people with opposing views to present on their network. MSNBC either ignores stories that favor conservatives or brings them up just to belittle them. It’s not even close.

  39. Cindy,
Could you provide some documentation that “The organizations doing this are part of an extremist Christian movement that want a second revolution.” Freedom Works is preaching revolution for God? Any proof? I’m a deist, which is hardly an extremist Christian, but I’ll take a second revolution over becoming some third world collective every time. I prefer that to passing the responsibility of defense from tyranny off on the next generation, but my guess is you don’t feel that way. In fact, I would say that most folks at the march in DC don’t feel that way, but I wasn’t whipped into a frenzy by Fox or Freedom Works, I got angry at the government all by myself. I go to “Tea Parties” because we need to exhaust all options before a revolution, but I for one am not ruling one out. One thing the left can’t seem to understand is that this is a battle of collectivists vs. individualists. Collectivists can’t fathom that someone (an individualist) could come up with an idea on their own by doing nothing more than reading history and thinking for themselves, because that’s not how collectivists roll. If it was, they might figure out themselves that the Founding Fathers weren’t collectivists, but they never seem to. I don’t need some group to mindlessly whip me into a frenzy, all I have to do is watch what the government is doing and compare it to the Constitution and Bill of Rights. After that, I get whipped into a frenzy all by myself.

Also, apparently the Capitol Police haven’t done crowd estimates since the Million Man March, where they got a lot of heat for estimating the crowd at less than a million.

I was there and it was certainly more than 100,000, but the crowd didn’t nearly cover The Mall, much less reach the Washington Monument. Based on what I saw walking around and articles I’ve read, my best guess at this moment is 250,000 to 450,000 on the ground at any one time, and I have no idea how many showed up over the 8 hours the event covered.

I got off the metro at Freedom Square where we were supposed to begin lining up and it already was crowded. The march began almost an hour earlier than planned because they need the space for the droves of people who kept pouring in. We ended up on the south lawn of the Capitol, which was already full, and speakers had begun. From where I stood was a clear view of Pennsylvania Ave. and was in awe as I watched the waves of people who continued to pour down the street for several more hours. It was overwhelming and I, and others, kept repeating,”My God!! They are still coming!!”
I’ve been to huge events in my time and been in massive crowds, but whatever the true numbers are here- it was the most massive display of genuine patriotism I have ever witnessed. The silent majority found their voice and won’t be silenced by the skeptics on the left who have to resort to lies and ridicule to maintain their beliefs.

It was also sadly historic for the lack of coverage by traditonal news organizations. In time this will be seen as a true revolutionary shift where free people from a frre country stood up and fought to keep that freedom for themselves and for future generations. This is only the beginning and all those who comment on this site must continue to speak out, fight, and protest until we can right the wrongs and return the country to something we can recognize and be proud of. We must do this for America and for the world. Without America leading the example of liberty and freedom there is no one else.

  51. Let the “mainstream media” downplay our March on Washington, D.C. all they want! We know what we did; we know how many of us were there (we have the pictures to prove it!), and we know that Obama and Congress heard us loud and clear! The message we brought to our “leaders” in D.C. is simple: “WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK”! Either represent us, or go back home! Either act in the best interests of our nation, or go back home!

I’ll never forget Sept 10, 2009 to September 12, 2009! These were/are the days that saw the rebirth of American ideals, American principles, AND WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

  52. For those who want a “final and conclusive number” of how many attended the March on Washington, D.C. last week, let me offer this thought:

It’s impossible to get a conclusive number! Why? Because none of us went through turnstiles that could count us! If you look at C-Span, the FreedomWorks.org website, the 912marchondc.org website, if you look at the Flickr.com and YouTube.com websites, you can judge for yourself.

As one who was at Freedom Plaza at approximately 7:30am, I can tell you this: People were streaming into Freedom Plaza by the thousands from all of the surrounding streets. People were going directly to the West Lawn of the Capitol at that time too, and reports from volunteers up at the Capitol Hill site were reporting that D.C. Police were estimating at 10:30am that there were “over a million” there and the march hadn’t even started yet!

So as one who was there and worked as a Volunteer and was there from 7:30am until around 3pm on Sept. 12, 2009, I can honestly say that the “low ball” estimates of 50-60,000 are totally inaccurate and the “high ball” estimates of “over 2 million” may be a little on the high side. My guess? Over a million without any doubt!

Thank you to all that attended; Thank you to all of those throughout the Nation that supported us; and thank you to all of the Support groups, (i.e., FreedomWorks.org, Tea Party Patriots, Resist Net) and all of the other groups that helped make this the most successful Conservative Rally in Washington, D.C. History!

  53. How blatantly dishonest is correct, and it just ticks me off why the liberal/fringe media cannot admit to a successful 9/12 March. I guess it’s because they can’t handle the truth and the retaliation on 9/13 was a blatant failure, a big 1500 showed up. By the way, ABC did report the larger figure first, I saw it. They retracted it I would be willing to bet because of Obamas objection.

Keep fighting the good fight and WE WILL WIN, especially when the 2010 elections come up and we vote out all the liberals from either party. God Bless America!!

OK, LETS SEE THIS OFFERED THOUGHT

It’s impossible to get a conclusive number! Why? Because none of us went through turnstiles that could count us!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR AN ESTIMATE AND THERE ARE A VARIETY OF WAYS TO ESTIMATE CROWD SIZE…ESPECIALLY IN DC…

If you look at C-Span, the FreedomWorks.org website, the 912marchondc.org website, if you look at the Flickr.com and YouTube.com websites, you can judge for yourself.

I HAVE AND I BELIEVE BILL O´REILLY WHEN HE SAID 70,000 FOLKS AS DID THE DCFD WHO HAVE BEEN DOING CROWD ESTIMATES FOR ALL BIG RALLIES SINCE KINGS MARCH ON WASHINGTON…..OBAMA INAUG 1.8 MILLION

As one who was at Freedom Plaza at approximately 7:30am, I can tell you this: People were streaming into Freedom Plaza by the thousands from all of the surrounding streets.

AS YOU WERE ON THE GROUND HUNDREDS WOULD LOOK LIKE THOUSANDS…

People were going directly to the West Lawn of the Capitol at that time too, and reports from volunteers up at the Capitol Hill site were reporting that D.C. Police were estimating at 10:30am that there were “over a million” there and the march hadn’t even started yet!

“YOU LIE”….SHOW PROOF…DC POLICE DOES NOT DO CROWD SIZE….DC FD DOES THIS AND THEIR ESTIMATES SHOULD NOT BE LEAKED OUT AS THEY WERE = UP TO 70,000 AS BILL O SAID.

So as one who was there and worked as a Volunteer and was there from 7:30am until around 3pm on Sept. 12, 2009, I can honestly say that the “low ball” estimates of 50-60,000 are totally inaccurate

    70,000

and the “high ball” estimates of “over 2 million” may be a little on the high side.

    A LITTLE????

My guess? Over a million without any doubt!

YOUR GUESS FROM GROUND LEVEL???? NO WAY!!!!!

70,000 IS A LOT OF PEOPLE, HOWEVER WITH ALL THOSE ORGANIZATIONS AND FOX NEWS ORGANIZING THE RALLY….THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MANY MORE SHOWING UP IMHO.

  55. BTW, DON´T YOU THINK FREEDOM WORKS WOULD HAVE THESE HIGH ESTIMATES ON THEIR WEB SITE???

What they do have is this wide shot of the 70.000 people that showed up…..NOTICE HOW MUCH GREEN IS SHOWING BACK TOWARDS THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT….THEN LOOK AT THE PICS OF THE OBAMA INAUG WHERE THERE WERE REALLY 1.8 MILLION

THIS CROWD LOOKS LIKE THE CROWD OBAMA HAD IN OREGON DURING THE ELECTIONS.

Obviously anyone who tells you anything different than what you believe to be true, is a “liar”. So be it! As one who was there at the March on Washington, D.C. the entire time (7:00am – 3:00pm) and actually saw with my own two eyes and recorded the day’s events with a digital camera and a camcorder, the truth lays with us!

  65. I was there 9/12/2009, and have worked in many inaugural crowds, as I am a technician for a large utility that begins with “V”…I know the DC mall, the capitol, the buildings that surround it, as I have worked all thru them.

That said, in my estimation the total crowd size was well over 1 million. There was a DC controlled crowd counter that has it’s purpose to measure the numbers of people that go down PA ave in marches and protests. That number is unofficial, and is usually leaked out quietly. That crowd counter said 2.6 million walked down the mall between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM.

The March started at 9:30 AM.
We (my family & friends) had just arrived from the Maryland suburbs (where we live), and as we reached the edge of the crowd, we saw the police, who came on their motorcycles to tell the organizers that critical mass had been reached and the March had to start early. I was in the leading edge of the crowd, as we had walked down from a garage @ 7th & E st NW, and were only able to get as close as 9th street. Once the Fife & Drum Corps passed we five immediately fell in. Our group reached the Capitol, and stood/sat right in front of the General Grant statue, at the curb for the 1st Street. I actually got to chat with a few of the scooter cops of the SOD, who are there for crowds (they eventually gave up trying to keep streets clear, after trying to use fire trucks going thru to move people…the crowd was just too densely packed and would re-filled the cleared areas as soon as the trucks went thru). One cycle cop told me they had been told at 12noon that 1.2 million were unofficially estimated. I can believe it. I know the crowd was so densley packed, that it took all of 20 minutes to push our way from our location to the port-a-potties 100 yards away.

The more I read, and see individual pictures, even those of the President’s inauguration, I do think we may have reached the 2 million mark for how many showed up, marched, and shouted. Add in those marching in other cities, and we quite have probably 1% of the American population standing in protest. This would shake ANY politician to have that many livid citizens protesting their policies.

God Bless America. Keep the protest ALIVE!

Anyone able, needs to come to DC 11/5/2009, meet at the East Front steps, and Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, Mark Levin, and Jon Voight (among others) will then lead us in lobbying our Congress Critters to defeat Pelosi’s monstrosity.
