Congratulations Honduras

Congratulations are in order for Honduras, who endured months of bullying from Zelaya’s allies, and the Obama administration in the wake of their June 28th removal of the Honduran President from power. Although his ouster was ordered by a unanimous Honduran Supreme Court, and approved by the Honduran Congress, the Obama administration called it a military coup and cut off aid to the country, revoked visas of Honduran officials, and threatened to not recognize the results of the elections, which were held yesterday.

The winner is a conservative rancher named Porfirio “Pepe” Lobo with 56% of the vote, beating Liberal Party candidate Elvin Santos at 38%. It was expected that  voters would  punish the Liberal party of both the deposed president and the interim government that removed him.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

While the small Central American nation is expected to get crucial support from the U.S., it will likely continue to face opposition from regional heavyweights such as Brazil and Argentina. The U.S., in agreeing to accept the winner, is now in a delicate position — with Brazil, for example, which is housing exiled leader Manuel Zelaya in its Honduran embassy and recognizes him as president.

Only the U.S., Costa Rica and Panama have said they will accept the winner, though other countries, including Mexico and Canada, appear to be leaning that way as well. The government is betting that U.S. recognition will lead other nations to back down from earlier positions. “They may not recognize the elections Sunday itself, but I believe they will at some point in the future,” Mr. Lobo said Saturday.

Earth Times reports:

Most of the Latin American countries and Spain do not want to recognize the elections staged by Honduras’ de facto government following the ouster of Zelaya in a June 28 coup. But some countries, including Costa Rica, Peru and Panama, see the elections as valid. Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana, whose country rejects the elections, said he had discussed them over the telephone Saturday with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who had described them as a “step” which needed to be followed by “many more.”

Reuters: United States, Brazil at odds over Honduras crisis:

The State Department called the vote “a necessary and important step forward” after results came in on Sunday but did not say whether Washington would explicitly recognize Lobo’s victory over ruling party candidate Elvin Santos.

I’m trying to figure out what additional steps Honduras needs to take to please the State Department, but I strongly suspect and fear that Obama will be tempted to follow his hero’s lead. Remember his cringe inducing greeting to Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the G20 summit in London, last April?:

Ed Morrissey sees the Obama administration as partly to blame for the effort, led by Brazil, to disregard the elections:

And so we come to the ultimate irony of the entire sordid mess that Obama himself largely created.  Obama refused to accept the legality of Zelaya’s removal because Obama considered it an affront to democracy, even though Zelaya violated the Honduran constitution and the Honduran parliament and Supreme Court followed the law in having him removed from office.  Thanks to that self-defeating and intellectually vapid policy, Obama has undermined actual democracy in Honduras by giving Brazil, Venezuela, and Nicaragua an opening to ignore the results of a regularly scheduled and honest election and to force Honduras to put a lawbreaker back into office against the will of its people.

The Nefarious Left-wing Cabal Behind Climate Research (UPDATED)

Real Climate November 20, 2009, The CRU hack:

More interesting is what is not contained in the emails. There is no evidence of any worldwide conspiracy, no mention of George Soros nefariously funding climate research, no grand plan to ‘get rid of the MWP’, no admission that global warming is a hoax, no evidence of the falsifying of data, and no ‘marching orders’ from our socialist/communist/vegetarian overlords. The truly paranoid will put this down to the hackers also being in on the plot though.

How interesting. Never mind the dubious veracity of most of that…nobody reporting on Climategate had even mentioned George Soros…. but now that they’ve mentioned it:

Daily Tech: September 2007, Update: NASA, James Hansen, and the Politicization of Science

In 2006, Hansen accused the Bush Administration of attempting to censor him. The issue stemmed from an email sent by a 23-year old NASA public affairs intern. It warned Hansen over repeated violations of NASA’s official press policy, which requires the agency be notified prior to interviews. Hansen claimed he was being “silenced,” despite delivering over 1,400 interviews in recent years, including 15 the very month he made the claim.  While he admits to violating the NASA press policy, Hansen states he had a “constitutional right” to grant interviews.  Hansen then began a barrage of public appearances on TV, radio and in lecture halls decrying the politicization of climate science.

Turns out he was right. Science was being politicized. By him.

A report revealed just this week, shows the ‘Open Society Institute’  funded Hansen to the tune of $720,000, carefully orchestrating his entire media campaign. OSI, a political group which spent $74 million in 2006 to “shape public policy,” is funded by billionaire George Soros, the largest backer of Kerry’s 2004 Presidential Campaign. Soros, who once declared that “removing Bush from office was the “central focus” of his life, has also given tens of millions of dollars to MoveOn.Org and other political action groups.

Certainly Soros has a right to spend his own money. But NASA officials have a responsibility to accurate, unbiased, nonpartisan science. For Hansen to secretly receive a large check from Soros, then begin making unsubstantiated claims about administrative influence on climate science is more than suspicious — it’s a clear conflict of interest.

Just sayin’.

So, like ‘Win Without War,’ the group calling itself ‘Real Voices’ is almost certainly just another Moveon front. Which means that the ‘real voice’ you hear is that of the billionaire Bush—hating megalomaniacal crackpot, George Soros.

FrontPageMagazine has a good profile of the uber-radical David Fenton, here.

A pertinent tidbit:

The radical Left owes a great debt of gratitude to David Fenton. He has mixed Neo-Marxist ideology with junk science, trial lawyers, labor, progressive millionaires, politicians, and radical policy wonks to construct a complex, moneymaking left-wing advocacy empire. Fenton Communications reported billing $6 million dollars in 2002, and will likely make much more this year with high profile clients like The Heinz Family Foundation, the aforementioned Open Society Institute and

A complete list of Fenton Communication’s clients, here. (pdf: page 5). A veritable who’s who of left wing organizations.

According to Fenton’s own website,

For the past few years, Fenton Communications has worked with the United Nations Foundation on a number of their global initiatives to meet the most pressing health and environmental challenges of the 21st century.

Fenton helped publicize and cultivate speakers for the UN Foundation’s briefing at the United Nations to explore following the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, which brought together leaders in the political, scientific and diplomatic communities to find common ground on the crucial issue of global warming. Among the speakers we helped to secure was Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE).

People like Steve McIntyre, Anthony Watts, Lord Monckton, and Chris Horner have been fighting this Leftwing environmental onslaught for years, and the tide may be beginning to turn in their favor…but is it too late?

Roger L. Simon has started a Climategate Facebook page, if you’re on Facebook, you can join here.

Viscount Monckton on Climategate: ‘They Are Criminals’ (PJM Exclusive);

What have the mainstream news media said about the Climategate affair? Remarkably little. The few who have brought themselves to comment, through gritted teeth, have said that all of this is a storm in a teacup, and that their friends in the University of East Anglia and elsewhere in the climatological community are good people, really.

No, they’re not. They’re criminals. With Professor Fred Singer, who founded the U.S. Satellite Weather Service, I have reported them to the UK’s Information Commissioner, with a request that he investigate their offenses and, if thought fit, prosecute. But I won’t be holding my breath: In the police state that Britain has now sadly become, with supine news media largely owned and controlled by the government, the establishment tends to look after its own.

In his strongest statement to date, Monckton said Saturday on the Alex Jones Show:

Monckton said that those who are threatening to shut down economies, bankrupt nations, and deepen the problems of the third world by implementing draconian policies in the name of global warming should be indicted, prosecuted and imprisoned “for a very long time”.

“The fraudsters and racketeers from Al Gore to the people at the University of East Anglia who have been making their fortune at the expense of taxpayers and the little guy,” should be criminally charged, said Monckton, in response to the climategate scandal.

FYI: Another nefarious one-worlder committed to a “new world order” through junk science is Maurice Strong, of  Oil For Food scandal fame.

David Fenton’s Photography on Exhibit in NYC

On October 30th, the Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea will open the exhibition David Fenton: Eye of the Revolution, a look back at Yippies, Black Panthers, Be-Ins, Weathermen, the Chicago 7, tear gas, protests, and the years that changed America forever. In conjunction with the exhibition, on November 8th the gallery will host a panel discussion on the legacy of the 1960s, good and bad, with SDS Founder Tom Hayden, former SDS leader Bernadine Dohrn, former Black Panther Jamal Joseph and photographer David Fenton. Moderated by Josh Marshall, Editor and Publisher of Talking Points Memo. 3:30-6 pm.

Still in his teens in the late 60s, underground news photographer David Fenton–now CEO of a major public interest communications firm–photographed the passionate street protests and calculated mass media tactics that still shape U.S. politics and culture today. His photos appeared in anti-war and counter-cultural publications around the world, as well as in The New York Times, Life, Look, Newsweek and many others.

Fenton possessed both a police press pass and behind-the-scenes access to the leaders and celebrities of the era. David Fenton: Eye of the Revolution will feature over 75 photographs, including rare vintage prints. Join Fenton on a countercultural journey from Washington, D.C. to New York City, Oakland and Chicago with stops at Columbia, Yale and Berkeley looking at Civil Rights, the Peace Movement, Black Power, Women’s Liberation, Gay Rights, Hippies, Police Riots, Yippies. Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, Huey P. Newton, Allen Ginsberg, John and Yoko, Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, Weathermen Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, and the pig who ran for President.

Since his employment at Liberation News Service, Fenton’s protest-driven view of the world has evolved into Fenton Communications, the nation’s largest progressive communications firm. With clients including and Nelson Mandela, he is still pushing for change in the tradition of 40 years ago.

Full circle.

Editors note: I changed the title from “The Nefarious Funder Of Climate Research” to “The Nefarious Cabal Behind Climate Research” to reflect the changes in the post due to updates. For some reason, WordPress wouldn’t allow me to use <strike> in the title, even though I’ve done it before.

Via Ed Morrissy, Hot Air: Oddly enough,  the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit now admits they threw out the raw data on which much of their theories on anthropogenic global warming are based.

“The AGW movement has been exposed as a religious belief and a political cash cow, not science”.

And I would add, a means to an end.

St Louis Holiday Tea Party Draws Thousands

Depending on who you listen to, the tea party drew 2,500- 4000, or managed to “muster several hundred followers”. That last guestimate comes courtesy of KMOX St. Louis:

The St. Louis Tea Party Coalition mustered several hundred followers for a rally in downtown’s Kiener Plaza on Saturday.

One of the speakers was Dave McArthur of McArthur’s Bakery. He asked people to cast out party labels when voting in 2010 Congressional elections, “It’s not Democrats and it’s not Republicans. It’s Conservatives who care.”

I believe the pictures tell a different story:

Climategate:CRU Fraudulent Codes Explained

Video via Fascist Soup:

Fascist Soup and The American  Thinker and Charlie Martin at PJ Media have more on the fraudulent source codes.

Michael Mann brazenly accuses CRU critics of “cherry-picking”.

RedState: Shock! Cherry Pickers Accuse Cherry Pickers Of Picking Cherries

Please. Were any of their source codes not fraudulent?

UK Telegraph: Climate change: this is the worst scientific scandal of our generation

Our hopelessly compromised scientific establishment cannot be allowed to get away with the Climategate whitewash, says Christopher Booker

…the question which inevitably arises from this systematic refusal to release their data is – what is it that these scientists seem so anxious to hide? The second and most shocking revelation of the leaked documents is how they show the scientists trying to manipulate data through their tortuous computer programmes, always to point in only the one desired direction – to lower past temperatures and to “adjust” recent temperatures upwards, in order to convey the impression of an accelerated warming. This comes up so often (not least in the documents relating to computer data in the Harry Read Me file) that it becomes the most disturbing single element of the entire story. This is what Mr McIntyre caught Dr Hansen doing with his GISS temperature record last year (after which Hansen was forced to revise his record), and two further shocking examples have now come to light from Australia and New Zealand.

In each of these countries it has been possible for local scientists to compare the official temperature record with the original data on which it was supposedly based. In each case it is clear that the same trick has been played – to turn an essentially flat temperature chart into a graph which shows temperatures steadily rising. And in each case this manipulation was carried out under the influence of the CRU.

Climate Skeptic Chris Horner On Climategate: “I Told You So”

Chris Horner, the author of Red Hot Lies: How Global Warming Alarmists Use Threats, Fraud, and Deception to Keep You Misinformed, appeared on Fox to discuss Climategate.

He thinks Obama changed his mind about Copenhagen because of Climategate. They’re in full panic mode…They’re doubling down?

Spigot Of Federal Dollars To ACORN To Be Turned Back On Courtesy Of Obama Justice Dept

Just in time for Christmas, ACORN, “the anti-poverty group” as The New York Times calls them, will be paid for “services provided”:

The Justice Department has concluded that the Obama administration can lawfully pay the community group Acorn for services provided under contracts signed before Congress banned the government from providing money to the group.

The department’s conclusion, laid out in a recently disclosed five-page memorandum from David Barron, the acting assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel, adds a new wrinkle to a sharp political debate over the antipoverty group’s activities and recent efforts to distance the government from it.

If you read the memorandum and need a little  help with the legalese, Plubius at Big Government can help with that:

It should be noted that the ACORN funding ban is included within the current Continuing Resolution, a legislative vehicle to fund government operations until a full budget is enacted. Without the CR, no federal funds could be expended by any agency. Under the current CR, ACORN is prohibited from receiving federal funds. Justice is arguing that some existing contracts entered into the executive branch officials–which haven’t been disclosed to the public–supercede the Congressional legislation. But only Congress can dictate how funds are spent.

The ruling seems to be an interpretation in search of a loophole. Worse, it seems the Justice Department is trying to find a way to allow ACORN to continue receiving government funds, rather than a dispassionate analysis of the funding ban passed by Congress.

Not surprising at all, considering.

So I guess ACORN WILL be gettin’ sumpin’ for Christmas, even though they’ve  been nothing but baaaad.

Good News And Bad News On Cap And Trade – Mostly Bad News

It’s official. The Obama administration will not be influenced one iota  by the recent brouhaha caused by the hacked emails of some of the world’s top climate scientists; emails that strongly suggest a conspiracy among said scientists, exaggeration of their data, possibly illegal destruction of inconvenient data,  resistance to disclosure, data manipulation, and private admissions of flaws in their public claims, among other things.

Obama’s Socialist Climate Czar, Carol Browner is not impressed and says the science is settled, so put that in your pipe and smoke it, deniers:

Ms. Browner said the only people who still doubt global warming is happening and that humans are to blame are “a very small group of people who continue to say this isn’t a real problem, that we don’t need to do anything.”

She also said the e-mails are only trickling out, and that the entire set hasn’t been released.

Ms. Browner initially shrugged when asked about the e-mails, saying she didn’t have a reaction. But when a reporter followed up, she said she will stick with the consensus of the 2,500 climate scientists on the International Panel on Climate Change who concluded global warming is happening and is most likely being pushed by human actions.

What about the 30,000 scientists who don’t agree with that consensus? Oh yeah…they’re deniers so they don’t count. The science is settled. The 2,500 said so. See how that works? Peer review means, *only peers who agree with us* when an ambitious  socialist agenda is on the line.

The good news?

“Cap and Trade Is Dead”

…at least according to Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe who yesterday said:

“Ninety-five percent of the nails were in the coffin prior to this week. Now they are all in.”

If any politician might be qualified to offer last rites, it would be Mr. Inhofe. The top Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee has spent the past decade in the thick of Washington’s climate fight. He’s seen the back of three cap-and-trade bills, rode herd on an overweening Environmental Protection Agency, and steadfastly insisted that global researchers were “cooking” the science behind man-made global warming.

Bad news:

I hope to God Inhofe is right about this, but one has to keep in mind that cap and trade is a policy very near and dear to Obama’s heart:

Obama began last year promising the editors of the San Francisco Chronicle that he’d bankrupt one sector of the economy:

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.

William Teach argues that cap and trade is not dead – not by a long shot.

More bad news:

Obama’s trip to Copenhaen is back on, and

Copenhagen conference will produce an agreement that leads to a treaty that Obama will sign

…Obama has changed his mind again and Copenhagen is back on. He traveled to China last week and apparently has a deal with them that include serious commitments to reduce carbon emissions. And a top UN official has predicted success in Copenhagen, with a formal treaty to follow within six months.  So it seems we have a slight delay but the treaty is still on the table.

On a side note, the new European Union President Herman van Rompuy said last week, “The climate conference in Copenhagen is another step toward the global management of our planet.”  This statement only mirrors what Lord Monckton stated in his warning for America two months ago. But is anybody even listening?

Good news: Thanks to the CRU hacked emails, Americans are waking up to the fact that global warming alarmism is a scam.

Bad news: The socialists driving it don’t care.

Good news?

Johah Goldberg is suggesting a new strategy for Republicans running for office in 2010: Promise to repeal the disastrous bill. He speaks specifically of ObamaCare in this instance, but it should apply to all the Dems’ ruinous policies:

Republicans should promise to repeal “Obamacare” if they get a congressional majority in 2010. As National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru argues, that way moderate Democrats won’t be able to run away from their votes come 2010. They’ll be on notice that this will be the campaign issue of the election. And moderate Republicans will be on notice to resist the temptation to tinker with Obamacare rather than defenestrate it once it’s passed.

Sure, I’d rather see this health-care proposal die stillborn (and that’s still quite possible). But if it passes, the upside is that Americans will finally be given a stark philosophical choice on a fundamental issue. That’s much rarer than you might think (recall that the Iraq War and the bailouts were bipartisan affairs).

Obamacare is a vast, deeply polarizing demonstration project for progressive ideas. It is terrible policy, but because I think it’s terrible policy, it may well result in a beneficial backlash. “Example is the school of mankind,” proclaimed Edmund Burke, “and they will learn at no other.”

Democrats insist they’re pushing for health-care reform against a political headwind because “history” compels them to. Republicans are standing athwart “history” yelling, “Stop!”

Politically, one side will be proved right, and the side proved wrong will pay a staggering price. Everyone’s all in.

No more reaching across the aisle….stand firm, and hold the line, Republicans. America’s survival depends on you

Good news?

RS McCain thinks that Cap and Trade is a goner.

This is kind of obvious, isn’t it? Once the fraudulent “science” behind the global warming scare was exposed, Al Gore became the Piltdown Man of American politics and that whole Kyoto-style agenda was as obsolete as the mullet and parachute pants.

Bad news…

I wish I could be that optimistic.

But  we are dealing with really determined people. Look what happened to ACORN’s federal funding ban.

Good news?

Andrew Breitbart (via Twitter) thinks Global warming is down and has other targets in mind:

GlobalWarming down. ACORN down-ish. Lets take on SEIU, political correctness (cultural Marxism) & totalitarianism in Hollywood next. Game?
