ACORN Sting Videographer, James O’Keefe Arrested!

Dude —What?!

Alleging a plot to wiretap Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in the Hale Boggs Federal Building in downtown New Orleans, the FBI arrested four people Monday, including James O’Keefe, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group’s credibility.

Also arrested were Joseph Basel, Stan Dai and Robert Flanagan, all 24. Flanagan is the son of William Flanagan, who is the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, the office confirmed. All four were charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.

According to the FBI affidavit, Flanagan and Basel entered the federal building at 500 Poydras Street about 11 a.m. Monday, dressed as telephone company employees, wearing jeans,  fluorescent green vests, tool belts, and hard hats. When they arrived at Landrieu’s 10th floor office, O’Keefe was already in the office and had told a staffer he was waiting for someone to arrive.

When Flanagan and Basel entered the office, they told the staffer they were there to fix phone problems. At that time, the staffer, referred to only as Witness 1 in the affadavit, observed O’Keefe positioning his cell phone in his hand to videotape the operation. O’Keefe later admitted to agents that he recorded the event.

After being asked, the staffer gave Basel access to the main phone at the reception desk. The staffer told investigators that Basel manipulated the handset. He also tried to call the main office phone using his cell phone, and said the main line wasn’t working. Flanagan did the same.

They then told the staffer they needed to perform repair work on the main phone system and asked where the telephone closet was located. The staffer showed the men to the main General Services Administration office on the 10th floor, and both went in. There, a GSA employee asked for the men’s credentials, after which they stated they left them in their vehicle.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service apprehended all four men shortly thereafter.

Not  good! What on earth was so explosive that they were willing to take such risks to uncover it? What parts of this story are we missing?

Well lookie here, good ol’ MSNBC wasn’t slow to pick up on this story, was it?:

James O’Keefe arrested for trying to tap Mary Landrieu’s phones

The editors of Big Government claim they knew nothing about it, which is almost certainly true: No way would Breitbart be so stupid as to sign off on tapping a senator’s phone. What makes this doubly bizarre, of course, is that O’Keefe was already threatened with legal action by ACORN for surreptitiously videotaping inside their offices. You’d think if he was planning to try something as insanely underhanded as this, he might have done, say, a Wikipedia search about whether it’s illegal to, um, tamper with government phone lines.

Ellie Light’s a Dude?

The Plain Dealer reports:

Ellie Light revealed: I’m Barbara Brooks, a nurse, says Pro-Obama letter writer

But then Ben Smith at the Politico has some updates:

Now somebody calling herself Brooks is denying the story to the Plain Dealer, at the link above. This is, a reader notes, a deep rabbit hole.

And because I love rabbit holes, the deeper the better, another update: “Ellie Light” emails from the same Yahoo account that was the source of the original letter: “Where is there a denial?… it’s not from me!!”

And now with the latest from Gawker, the rabbit hole gets even deeper:

‘Ellie Light’ Is Not Who She Says She Is

What the freak?

Brooks’ husband, according to public records is a guy named Winston Steward. That’s his Facebook profile picture up top. None of this made any sense, so we called Brooks in Texas, where she also has a home. She says the Plain Dealer got it wrong.

“I’m not Ellie Light,” she told us. “My husband is. I never told anybody that I was Ellie Light. Winston wrote every single letter. He’s been doing it since he saw that the Gulf War was being fought under false pretenses. I told him from the beginning that he shouldn’t write letters under phony names, but he wanted to get them out there.”

So why did she tell the Plain Dealer, in the clearest possible terms, that she was, in fact, responsible for the Ellie Light correspondence? “That wasn’t me,” she says. “I don’t know how they got that. Maybe my husband was impersonating me.” As evidence, she cites this clip of her husband calling into Michael Smerconish’s radio show to claim responsibility for the letters. Steward called in and spoke in his regular voice, and neither Smerconish nor any other listener apparently caught on to the fact that he was a man

Okay, these two are just too bizarre.

And no, commenters at the The Plain Dealer; conservatives do not do this all the time, too.

Ace, without seeing all the new developments, was able to put it all in perspective, quite well.

Soooo… are we talking about a couple a hippy-dippy weirdos, or….might there be a connection to the White House, yet?

Dan Riehl, way ahead of the curve, reported on Winston’s Twitter account on Sunday:

The account has never tweeted and follows 18 individuals, with 9 following it. Given that we usually add people we know when we first open a Twitter account, I looked to see who the first individual was that Winston44 added. That would be Adam Segal.

Adam J. Segal, President, The 2050 Group, LLC + Named to PR Week’s 40 Under 40 for 2009.

His firm is The 2050 Group. It seems to be offline right now, though it was up last night and may be having tech issues. He maintained a personal blog on blogger here – ethnicmarketing. He seemed thrilled when Obama ran a spot in Spanish on Univision, not sure if he was involved with that.

What he is, or was involved with is the National Alliance for Hispanic Health Care. And this press release puts them in the White House, Google shows them to be supportive of Obama, particularly his health care reform agenda – and the release also establishes Segal as the media contact.

Nothing about Obama and his creepy minions would surprise me at this point. Nothing.

Of course. Winston Steward is a Kos Kiddie and Huffpo member.

Andrew Breitbart appeared on Fox this morning to discuss the story, (before her/his identity was reported):

“Ellie Light” story turns a little bit freaky and a whole lot deaky

His exit Q:

Exit question: Given that this appears to be some sort of kooky nutroots freelance operation gone wrong and not an Axelrodian master plan, does anyone much care anymore?

Obama Finally Concedes Lack Of Transparency

But don’t blame him, it was all  the Congress’s doing. He was just an impartial observer who only wanted what was  best for the American people  as quickly as possible. Although the White House has denied for months that the process lacked transparency, now, all of a sudden, after 6+ months of that “ugly process” being conducted by Reid and Pelosi, with the American people noticing and becoming increasingly disgusted by it, to the point where Republicans are being elected in very blue States, well, huh…now that you think about it...uh, yeah...gee..

Video via Weasel Zippers

After weeks of denials from the White House that the health care reform effort failed to exhibit the transparency President Barack Obama promised on the campaign trail, Obama is conceding that locking the public out of key discussions was a “mistake.”

“We had to make so many decisions quickly in a very difficult set of circumstances that after awhile, we started worrying more about getting the policy right than getting the process right,” Obama told ABC’s Diane Sawyer Monday. “But I had campaigned on process—part of what I had campaigned on was changing how Washington works, opening up, transparency. …The health care debate as it unfolded legitimately raised concerns not just among my opponents, but also amongst supporters that we just don’t know what’s going on. And it’s an ugly process and it looks like there are a bunch of back room deals.”

Obama said he planned to address the point in his State of the Union address on Wednesday.

Amazingly enough, Obama is willing to concede “it looks like there are a bunch of backroom deals”…

Dude. Yeah, it sure looked that way. Maybe because it WAS that way…

So now, Obama has decided to address the issue.

He called the President, “fundamentally dishonest” to the American people whom he notes “smelled dishonesty and a rat”.
Time to “pivot”. Doubling down with  dishonesty and excuses is no longer feasible when your biggest boosters in the media no longer run interference for you.
It just became too blatant.
The State of the Union should be interesting.
Oh, neato: It’s not too late to organize a State of the Union “watch party” in your neighborhood.

Let’s just say, Michelle is dubious:

The unmitigated chutzpah here is so blinding that I don’t just need sunglasses to protect my eyes. I need blackout curtains. Watch President Obama blame Congress for Demcare bribery and sabotage of transparency. As if Rahm and all the senior goons in the White House weren’t twisting arms and cracking heads to ensure that the deal met their boss’s timeline. As if the Cadillac tax break for unions hadn’t been hashed out at 1600 Pennsylvania.

Mediaite: Even Jon Stewart Mocks Obama’s Use Of Teleprompters In The Classroom Of 6th Graders

The days of most comedians considering Obama to be too perfect, too wonderful, too messianic, to mock are over. Sure, this isn’t the first time Stewart has mocked Obama, but it may be the first time he’s made fun of his reliance on teleprompters, and his apparent narcissism ( evidenced by the super bowl boxed seats gag).
