Iraq Vs TARP: Which One Was More Worth Spending Billions On?

According to our President, one was necessary, one was “dumb”:

“…when I ran for president, I promised I wouldn’t just do what was popular – I would do what was necessary..”:

“If there’s one thing that has unified Democrats and Republicans — and everybody in between — it’s that we all hated the bank bailout. I hated it. You hated it.” — President Barack Obama, Jan. 27, 2010

“I don’t oppose all wars. … What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war.” — Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama, Oct. 2, 2002

So is the President right?  Was TARP a success, and the Iraq War a failure?

Exactly right Nice Deb. TARP avoided a run on the banks which was about to happen, but the same toxic assets are still in the same banks (those who haven’t gone bakrupt yet) and many of them are still too big to fail. To get an IMF loan we would have had to: buy up the bad assets at market prices and liquidate the ones who really needed it, and break up the gigantic ones who are still to big to fail. This has not happened because it would be bank shareholders who would take the hit for it and too many fat cats would get hurt. This problem is an old to the IMF who’ve seen it in action all over the world over many decades. It is not a mystery, we had many warnings for the past decade this could happen. The NYT financial reporter wasn’t lying (for a change) when he said that this mess is so huge that it took the of mismanagement of lots of people on both sides to get this bad.
But now we are bankrupt and it could still come apart again, and we have no more bullets. Say three Our Fathers and five Hail Marys, give Mr. Nice Deb and the Nice Deb kids some warm milk and cookies and go to bed.
