Harvard Study Shows Republicans Enjoy 4th of July More Than Dems

Reagan used to say, Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but the democrats believe every day is April 15. Now, a new study from Hahvad,  shows what most of us probably suspected. Republicans seem to enjoy celebrating the 4th more than Dems. A shock, I know.

US News reports:

Democratic political candidates can skip this weekend’s July 4th parades. A new Harvard University study finds that July 4th parades energize only Republicans, turn kids into Republicans, and help to boost the GOP turnout of adults on Election Day.

“Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation’s political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party,” said the report from Harvard. [See political cartoons about the 2012 GOP field.]

“The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century. Survey evidence also confirms that Republicans consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats. According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party. Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans,” write Harvard Kennedy School Assistant Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University Assistant Professor Andreas Madestam.

Their findings also suggest that Democrats gain nothing from July 4th parades, likely a shocking result for all the Democratic politicians who march in them.

The study suggests that if people are looking for a super-patriotic 4th of July celebrations, they should head to Republican towns. “Republican adults celebrate Fourth of July more intensively.”

As opposed to say…Berkeley, or Dearborn, or Madison, or….you get the idea.

Again, shocking shocking stuff.

  2. Yeah, it’s a real hellhole here in Amurica. That’s why our citizens are always trying to cross the border to access your notoriously excellent health care facilities.

  6. Jeff,
What I like aboot most Canadians is that most of them are at least self-aware enough to know that they have the luxury of saying something stupid like you, or something else that finds fault with us is that they have that luxury because of the fact that we have shouldered the costs of not just our defense, but of yours as well, so that you could persist in the fantasy of single-payer death care.

I understand. You probably think it is just fine. Of course many of your countrymen aren’t very bothered when a tribe blockades itself on a reservation and stops traffic that is going through, or when a very vocal francophone minority insists on its own immigration policy separate from the rest of the nation, or imposes bilingulalism on provinces that they rarely visit.

But I confess that I’ve always had fun in Toronto, enjoyed working in the House of Commons, even if I had to deal with loons like Gilles Duceppe, and I love the beer, the Cowboy Junkies, and Blue Rodeo. But seriously, your country is fractured (First Nations and the Bloc Quebecois anyone?). You have nothing to flap your piehole about.
