Verum Serum: Gingrich Camp Responds to VS Freddie Mac Story:

From the WSJ:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich touted the virtues of Freddie Mac’s business model in an interview he conducted with the company in April, 2007, remarks that appear at odds with the candidate’s recent statements that he had warned the company of impending financial disaster.

[...]

A spokesman for Mr. Gingrich, Joe DeSantis, said the interview showed Mr. Gingrich arguing for improved regulation of Freddie Mac and its larger cousin, Fannie Mae. He said the interview “directly contradicts the erroneous reports” that Mr. Gingrich was trying to stop reforms to Fannie and Freddie.

Herman Cain News Round-up

Ann Coulter has been in the forefront defending of Cain against these body blows that keep hitting his campaign in the form of sexual misconduct allegations. Here she is on Hannity, defending Cain from the latest charges:

Absolutely convinced that these charges are originating from the left, Coulter robustly defended  Cain, here: DAVID AXELROD’S PATTERN OF SEXUAL MISBEHAVIOR and again, here:  ONCE YOU GO CONSERVATIVE BLACK, YOU BETTER WATCH YOUR BACK:

…now we have Ginger White stepping forward to claim that she had a 13-year affair with Cain. Cain admits he was friends with White, but he categorically, adamantly denies having an affair with her.

White has the whole combo-platter of questionable accuser attributes: She’s another financially troubled, twice-divorced, unemployed single mother, who has claimed sexual harassment in the past, declared bankruptcy once, was accused of stalking and had a libel judgment entered against her just this year. So far in 2011, she’s had nine liens put on her property.

But we’re supposed to ignore all of that because she’s the third woman of questionable character to make an implausible allegation. Liberals say there’s a pattern, but the only pattern is of their making far-fetched accusations of a sexual nature against Cain.

White’s proof that she had a 13-year affair is that she has two of Cain’s books signed by him — one with the incriminating inscription, “Friends are forever! Everything else is a bonus,” and the other, “Miss G, you have already made a ‘big difference!’ Stay focused as you pursue your next destination.” (I know — filthy!)

If that’s proof of an affair, I’ve had thousands of them without even realizing it.

Also, White produced evidence that Cain had texted or called her cell phone 61 times during four non-consecutive months — but did not reveal what those texts said. (“Would you please return my lawn mower?”)

Again, if that’s proof of an affair, I’m having hundreds of them at this very moment.

This is the sort of evidence you get with an actual sexual predator: Bill Clinton’s accusers had gifts, taped phone conversations with him and a semen-stained dress.

Gennifer Flowers produced taped telephone calls with Clinton totaling thousands of words between them, with him counseling her on how to deny their affair: “If they ever hit you with it, just say no, and go on. There’s nothing they can do … But when they — if somebody contacts you, I need to know … All you got to do is deny it.”

Paula Jones had multiple same-day witnesses — including the state troopers who worked for Clinton and had already told the press about a “Paula” they brought to Clinton’s hotel room. And that was for a single incident.

Monica Lewinsky had lots of gifts from Clinton, including a hat pin, two brooches, a marble bear figurine, a T-shirt from Martha’s Vineyard and Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” all of which she mysteriously placed with Clinton’s secretary, Betty Currie, during the investigation, as well as a semen-stained dress, which Monica kept.

Ginger White claims she had a 13-year affair with Cain — and all she has are two books with inscriptions that could have been written to an auto mechanic who waited in line at a Cain book signing. Even her business partner during the alleged affair says White never mentioned Cain’s name.

That is particularly noteworthy because  White’s body building business partner claims she was having a lesbian affair with her during that same 13 year period.

The female bodybuilder who once ran a bicycle business with latest Herman Cain accuser Ginger White says the Atlanta woman never mentioned the Republican presidential candidate, who she says was her lover for 13 years.

“His name has never come up,” said Kimberly Vay, who told ABC News that she and White were former business partners.

***

The UK Daily Mail reported:

Miss Vay is a competitive body builder and a behavioural health specialist who last year started No Limit Cycling with Ms White – in which the two women taught spin classes.

But somewhere along the way, their business relationship soured, with Miss Vay seeking a ‘stalking protective order’ after Ms White sent out a defamatory email about her in December, according to Miss Vay’s lawyer, Kurt Martin.

When asked if she thought White’s allegations were credible, Vay simply referred ABC to her attorney.

“When you see the details of my lawsuit,” she said, “they will speak for themselves.”

When White first came forward, (“out of the blue”, according to Cain), Cain’s attorney, Len Wood, sent FOX 5News a statement that looked to all the world to be an admission that something of a sexual nature had gone on between the two:

“Mr. Cain has been informed today that your television station plans to broadcast a story this evening in which a female will make an accusation that she engaged in a 13-year long physical relationship with Mr. Cain. This is not an accusation of harassment in the workplace – this is not an accusation of an assault – which are subject matters of legitimate inquiry to a political candidate.

Rather, this appears to be an accusation of private, alleged consensual conduct between adults – a subject matter which is not a proper subject of inquiry by the media or the public. No individual, whether a private citizen, a candidate for public office or a public official, should be questioned about his or her private sexual life. The public’s right to know and the media’s right to report has boundaries and most certainly those boundaries end outside of one’s bedroom door.

Mr. Cain has alerted his wife to this new accusation and discussed it with her. He has no obligation to discuss these types of accusations publicly with the media and he will not do so even if his principled position is viewed unfavorably by members of the media.”

Uh….

First of all – I strongly disagree. If a candidate is cheating on his wife, the public has an interest because it says a lot about his character – his honesty, integrity, and  trustworthiness. And for those of you who are confused as to why Cain supporters would dump him and  turn to Gingrich,  knowing he cheated on two of his wives, the answer is (and this should be obvious) – there is a span of time that has elapsed since those things happened. A repentant Gingrich, having converted to Catholicism, has moved on and is (to all appearances) leading a fine, upstanding life with wife #3.  Christians believe we’re all sinners, and we believe in redemption. I can forgive a person for past indiscretions. The problem with Cain is, if these allegations are true, it shows a pattern of sexual behavior that he has practiced up until recently. Kind of the same problems we saw with Clinton.

Secondly, the fact that we basically got a “it’s none of your business” statement instead of a blanket denial, did not instill confidence. It is what turned me against Cain. Now Cain’s  come out and strongly denied the allegations, which puts into question why his attorney issued that ambiguous, self incriminating statement to begin with. White’s extensive credibility issues undermine her story, but the question remains – why did Cain have any kind of relationship with this “financially troubled, twice-divorced, unemployed single mother, who has claimed sexual harassment in the past, declared bankruptcy once, was accused of stalking and had a libel judgment entered against her just this year.” Why the late night phone calls, texting, etc.?

Clarification: There is a question of what came first – Cain’s first blanket denial, or his attorney’s statement. If someone can nail that down for me – let me know. But the fact remains -  it was a glaring inconsistency, which once again showed the Cain camp responding to a problem in an incompetent manner.

I agree with Coulter’s assessment that these hits are being orchestrated by Dem operatives, although it makes more sense in terms of timing, for it to be coming from one of the Republicans camps- namely Mitt’s.

I’m throwing this all out there because something about  it really smells, but I don’t know what to think at this point. I like Cain, and I don’t want to believe any of this about him.

Allen West is  now walking back his previous recommendation that Cain leave the race:

A very good column by Brent Bozell at Newsbusters on the enraging media double standard: Bozell Column: Let’s Kill Cain’s Campaign:

One might think from the breaking news that a woman has claimed she had a 13-year affair with presidential candidate Herman Cain that someone is being seriously exposed as a hypocrite. That would be the press. The media can’t deny they continue to display a lousy double standard. For Republican candidates, scandal news is instant. For Democrats, it’s eventual, if at all!

Ginger White’s charges sound a lot like Gennifer Flowers in 1992 saying she has a 12-year affair with Bill Clinton. So many in the press pounce on Flowers as unequivocal evidence of the media’s sense of balance. After all, they will remind us, just look how we covered that scandal!

Yes, look. Because it’s a wonderful exercise in media disinformation. Political junkies remember that Flowers held a press conference carried live on CNN on Thursday afternoon, January 23, 1992. It had all the elements for snappy news. She played audio tapes of phone conversations with Clinton. Despite all this, the first network mention was a brief mention by NBC’s Lisa Myers – more than 24 hours later. Other than that, the three broadcast network morning and evening newscasts waited to breathe the name “Flowers” for four days.

And then they dismissed the scandal as a non-scandal. On ABC, anchorman Peter Jennings (who had four wives) set the tone: “At several stops today, talking about Gennifer Flowers, Governor Clinton denounced what he called ‘trash for cash’. And there appear to be quite a few people who agree.” Jennings declared a quick ABC poll found only 26 percent wouldn’t vote for an adulterous candidate. “But our polling unit points out that at least half of those people who said no are Republicans and unlikely to vote for Governor Clinton anyway.”

The Other McCain: Cain in N.H.: ‘I’m Not Finished Yet!’

Tim Buckland of the Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader reports:

MANCHESTER — A small group of supporters and a horde of media got unclear answers Wednesday night whether Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is staying in the race.
During a gathering held for core New Hampshire supporters at his campaign office on Lowell Street, Cain told the group: “They keep coming after me. After that firestorm, people thought I was finished. Well, just like Yogi Berra said, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over, and I’m not finished yet.”

AJC: Cain accuser’s phone records sought - At least 70 messages reportedly exchanged recently between White, Cain cellphones:

Just days before coming forward with allegations of a 13-year affair with Herman Cain, Ginger White was repeatedly having contact with the presidential candidate, according to her cellphone records.

A review of the records by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows Cain sent 17 text messages to White, almost always responding to messages from her.

On Wednesday, Wood sent a letter to White’s attorney, Edward Buckley, asking for her phone records to “test her credibility and motive” for coming forward to the media. Wood, in the letter, said he wanted to “ascertain whether the decision to grant interviews was politically motivated and to determine whether she has received or [been] promised money for participating.”
