This study, like recent studies that demonstrate conservatives’ greater awareness of threats to safety and security and penchant to value the lessons learned by previous generations, appears destined to be misrepresented in the press. But if a conclusion can be drawn from the study, it is that the conservative complaint that progressives tend only to see the good outcomes from social welfare programs may have a basis in psychology. There were no politics–indeed, no humans–in this study. There were only pictures of cuddly or threatening animals mapped to unfamiliar Chinese characters. Yet with such emotionally inert input liberals were influenced more than anticipated to respond positively to a positive stimulus.
