Here’s a movie trailer:

A Press Release on the Runaway Slave website explains how the movie seeks to empower blacks by encouraging them to break away from an oppressive political system:

(Washington, D.C.) – January 1, 2012 – Have blacks in America achieved the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and become truly “Free at Last?” A powerful new documentary, Runaway Slave, premiering on January 13th at the Landmark Regent Theater in Los Angeles, CA, tackles this question and exposes the economic slavery of the black community to the ‘progressive,’ big-government policies of the Left. Herman Cain with many Hollywood celebrities will attend the red carpet event and screening. Pastor and former NAACP Chapter President C.L. Bryant hosts an in-depth look at the “new underground railroad” through which African Americans are finding freedom from an ingrained cultural acceptance of entitlements and big government. “There is a 50-year-old lie that has caused an entire people to become slaves to the political idea that government knows what is best.” Rev. Bryant said. “Runaway Slave will empower black Americans to free themselves from generations of enslavement to a tyrannical economic system.”

Rev. Bryant’s own life provides unique insights into the racial and political issues of the day. A former chapter president of the Garland, Texas, NAACP, former Democratic activist, and pastor; Bryant had a front row seat to the civil rights movement in the South.

The film features interviews from prominent black conservatives including Herman Cain and Thomas Sowell, as well as activists from all over the country. It is sure to spark an honest political discussion unlike anything the U.S. has seen in 50 years. Cain says in the film; “the incresing size and scope of the federal government is the new plantation.”

The film will be shown in select theatres nationwide following the upcoming premiere.

Duane Lester, for PJ Media, writes that the GOP needs to do a much better job reaching out to the black community:

Timothy Johnson is the chairman and founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation. He is less than impressed with the Republican Party’s outreach efforts:

I’m a past party official, so I can speak from in house party politics. The short answer is the party sucks at it. That’s the bottom line. The party when it comes down to the black community is doing a terrible job, and is still doing a terrible job.

Johnson said that the GOP may have done a little better under the leadership of Michael Steele, but the current leadership has simply given up on getting black votes:

I have candidates who are honest with me and they say, “Tim, I’ve had people tell me ‘Don’t worry about the black community.’” That pisses me off. When they are honest with me and say, ‘Tim, we’ve been told, ‘Don’t worry about going to the black community, they’re not going to vote for you anyway,’” that’s a bold faced lie. You don’t know who I’m going to vote for. I’m an American.

Chris Arps, co-founder of Move-On-Up, a “social network of African American conservatives and moderates,” says GOP outreach efforts are very superficial, saying they are simply

designed to siphon off a few votes or to force the Democratic candidate to spend resources in the black community that he ordinarily wouldn’t spend.
