Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, delivers his opening statement during the Full Committee hearing, “Lines Crossed: Separation of Church and State. Has the Obama Administration Trampled on Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Conscience?”

Another video from the hearing:

Rep. Walberg asks the Bishop to explain his understanding of “unalienable rights”: as stated in the Declaration of Independence.

Lutheran Church Missouri Synod President, Rev. Harrison expressed disbelief that  the assault on freedom of religion presented by the Obama administration’s proposed mandate was even happening, “This whole conversation is utterly surreal,” he said.

  5. Everybody is arguing about whether or not Obama should force Catholics to pay for birth control and abortions but that misses the point. The President of the United States using the newly authorized powers under Obamacare can now order businesses and individuals to purchase a product. Worse he can spell out exactly what this products specifications are and how we must behave to . This is now a door opened that will never again be shut. Birth control and abortion are just part of the evil. Now everything that affects this product (healthcare) from other products to behavior to our personal associations is now governable by the federal government and specifically the executive branch.

Forcing churches who do not believe in abortion and birth control to violate their beliefs is symptom of the cancer beneath.
Ann Coulter has an interesting take: Ok liberals, you rub your hands about all things you can now force the country’s citizens to do in the name of healthcare, now consider this, you are all worried about about the clipped interview of Rick Santorum about birth control…now consider this Rick Santorum you have created in your mind as President of the United States forcing you to do what ever he wants in the name of healthcare. Whomever controls the presidency now is the little dictator all in the name of healthcare. Salt, sugar, guns, housing, school lunches, drinking, meats, any fats, exercise, risky exercise, risky sports (Rush Limbaugh recently suggested football will soon be banned), safety equipment, and just let you mind wander… If you are a liberal think forced no contraception, no abortion, forced portions of meat …dang I can’t think of anything a conservative would force a liberal he must do in the name of healthcare but I am sure there is someone out there that can help with the ideas.

Forcing Catholics to submit is an evil against the 1st amendment but we are all under the same gun. It may not be religious liberty but it is still liberty. Religious liberty without general liberty leads to dead religions anyway.

  6. Like the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for – you might get it.”

Coulter, for the first time this year and probably in the last year, has it exactly right.
