Shock: Thaddeus McCotter Resigns From Congress

Former GOP candidate for President and frequent Red Eye guest, Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.) resigned on Friday, after enduring what he characterized as a “nightmarish” month and half.

The Hill reported:

In a bizarre, rambling and error-riddled statement, the five-term Michigan Republican said recent events have “severed the necessary harmony between the needs of my constituency and of my family.”

“As this harmony is required to serve, its absence requires I leave,” he said.

“The recent event’s totality of calumnies, indignities and deceits have weighed most heavily upon my family,” he added. “Thus, acutely aware one cannot rebuild their hearth of home amongst the ruins of their U.S. House office, for the sake of my loved ones I must ‘strike another match, go start anew’ by embracing the promotion back from public servant to sovereign citizen.”

The lyrical reference was to Bob Dylan’s 1965 classic “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue.”

The resignation ends an increasing strange series of events surrounding McCotter, beginning last fall when he launched a long-shot – many said hopeless – bid at the GOP presidential nomination.

I’m sure The Hill didn’t mean to add to the totality of “calumnies, indignities and deceit” sustained by McCotter over the past month and a half, when they called his statement, “bizarre, rambling and error-riddled”. It may have been slightly bizarre and rambling, but error ridden? Talk about kicking a man when he’s down.

Last month, McCotter was thrown off the ballot after failing to get the required 1,000 signatures, however, McCotter, who turned in 2,000, says he’s a victim of political sabotage. Reportedly, of the 2,000 signatures submitted, only a few hundred were deemed valid by Michigan state election officials.

I searched YouTube for video of McCotter’s statement, but it’s not up, yet.

I did find this discussion on Michigan Public TV from 6/08/12 regarding  the political fallout of McCotter’s petition problems, and the effect it is having on Michigan Republicans:
