Collectivist President Devalues Achievement: “If You’ve Got a Business — You Didn’t Build That”

At a campaign stop in Roanoke, Virginia, Obama took the opportunity to devalue achievement and hard work, by literally telling business owners that they didn’t “build that.” Successful Americans didn’t get where they are without “somebody else making it happen.”

The mask slips a little bit more, every day, doesn’t it?

“If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own,” he said. “You didn’t get there on your own.”

“The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together,” he said. “There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.  I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.  That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.”

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help,” he said. “There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

Deep breath.

Okay, obviously, people work together to make things happen. Obviously, many things are interconnected. And any honest businessman will give credit where credit is due in helping his business get off the ground. But  the Collectivist in Chief  goes overboard. He wants us to believe  that they didn’t get where they are without the government’s help, when more often than not, the government is a hindrance to small business.

For a United States President to go out there and tell business owners, “you didn’t build that” is the height of arrogance.  Could there ever be a clearer signal that he’s sworn off the white middle class male vote?

Earlier this year, it was suggested that part of Obama’s campaign strategy would be to isolate and attack “privileged” straight white males, as personified by Mitt Romney.

In a wide-ranging symposium Monday called “The State of Race in America,” award-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas said that “in some ways, the soul of the heterosexual white man is a stake” in the 2012 election.

His comments were part of a larger monologue on political and social power moving to minority groups, which he said will hurt former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s campaign.

“For everybody in this country in which America’s always been a fight,” he said, “They’re looking at him [Mitt Romney], in which everything’s been given, and we’re going, ‘OK, do you see yourself? Do you fully and comprehensively see yourself and how you fit in this?’”

  1. “You didn’t get there on your own.”

Let’s remember that Obama got absolutely NO PLACE on his own. Through his eyes, (with his “talent” HA!) it’s impossible to get somewhere on your own. Stupid, affirmative action, in over his head, dupe doesn’t get there is a whole world out there he really knows nothing about.

  3. In fairness, Obama’s speech can be read in a less disturbing way:

“Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that [the roads and bridges]. Somebody else made that happen.

The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

Don’t get me wrong. What Obama says is bad enough.

Obama actually says that the collective is a partner in your business because it provides roads. You would have no customers without roads. So, you are only in business because of what the collective did for you.

Then, Obama pre-emptively attacks the idea that a business doesn’t need roads if it has the internet. Too bad, the government also developed the internet.

By the way, the “internet” was a small, high speed network run by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) connecting government laboratories. Tim Berners Lee designed and implemented the communication protocol HTML (HyperText Markup Language), and his idea took off.

This early network prohibited commercial use and advertising. The government had almost nothing to do with the modern design, expansion, and use of the Internet.

Obama is repeating a vicious excuse for expropriating the work of citizens.

Leftist:  We would all be better off if you would be reasonable. Please give us all of your money for the greater good.
Citizen:  No way, I earned my wealth. I created my wealth.

Leftist:  Do you understand that you would be nothing without government? We built the streets, kept the law, regulated away the things that would have killed you as a child, and supported your education. You are lucky to be smart, unlike most others, yet you won’t share what we supported in you.
Citizen:  You already take 40% in taxes.

Leftist:  As you can see, our society is in decline. We need the rest.
    Citizen:  No way.
Leftist:  You are a selfish and ignorant man. Why can’t you meet us half way?

    Your Dog Owns Your House

The government happens to construct roads and utilities, but citizens have already paid for these through taxes. Government agencies protect us, but we don’t therefore owe the government everything. A free man can arrange a better deal than that. Of course, a slave has no such option.

  4. Tell ya what: If the government wants to get out of the road-building business, let them eliminate the excessive taxes we pay for fuel. If we, the people, want roads and bridges, let us, the people, vote on them and pay for them on a case-by-case basis.

    Same with utilities, also overtaxed.

    Same with sanitation, also overtaxed.

Better yet, get the guvmint out of such things altogether, and let private industry do those jobs. My guess is there’d be a lot fewer weasels in the state capitols and in D.C., and a lot fewer multimillionaires trying to run our lives, multimillionaires that just happened to make most their money AFTER they were elected to oversee distribution of our tax monies.

Our form of government was set up to have citizen-legislators and citizen-governors and president. It was never intended to be a place to get rich, but that’s what it has turned into. As a result, most legislators, governors and presidents make me want to puke because they’ve bastardized such a pure and simple system exclusively for their own gain, with little regard for those who were dumb enough to vote for them in the first place.
