Rep. Trey Gowdy appeared on Greta Van Susteren’s “On The Record” to to talk about the progress in being made in the Oversight Committee’s probe into the IRS scandal. Gowdy said he wanted to know why Washington and the Chief Council’s office  had to be involved in approving these “pretty innocuous 501 (c) (4) applications.”

“Mr Hull’s been doing it for 48 years, Greta. He’s been doing it since the year I was born! So why is he having to send to Washington to get permission to approve an application that he’s been approving for 48 years?” Gowdy wanted to know.

Greta made the excellent point that the Washington lawyers involved with the targeting have been sitting around “like deaf mutes”, allowing the Cincinnati agents to be the scapegoats. And Gowdy agreed, noting that “they thought they could get away with it.”

He said that they’ve interviewed 8 people from Ohio, and 8 from the DC office, but more people need to come forward. “One thing we know for sure, and even Jay Carney should be aware of this by now”, he snarked, “is it wasn’t two rogue agents in Ohio. The District of Columbia office’s fingerprints are all over this scandal.”

I’m glad to see that Carney is getting called out by some of these Republicans. He’s earned every bit of their scorn.

On Thursday’s “Special Report”, Charles Krauthammer suggested that the targeting was a Regime operation, saying, “the object (of the endless scrutiny) was to get through the 2010 and 2012 elections with these applicants unable to get approval, and thus raise funds.”
