Credit where credit is due. At least the Arizona Senator, unlike his partner in crime, Senator Lindsey Graham – whose mug was last seen on a milk carton – held a town hall.
He got an earful from AZ constituents who wanted to make it clear that they have no interest in seeing their country get involved in a civil war in Syria, but kudos to him for having the cojones to show his face after all the unpopular policies he’s been getting behind for the past year.
A woman who comes from the Christian minority in Syria, claimed to have an 18-year-old cousin in Syria who was killed just ten days ago.
“For me, to listen to you say there is no good option in Syria – I refuse to believe that…The good option right now is to take Saudi Arabia and Iran and force them to stop supporting the two sides in Syria. And you could do it. You can do it by diplomacy, not bombs, Sen. McCain. We cannot afford to shed more Syrian blood,” she said.
Senator McCain answered by mentioning that he too had been to Syria. “I too know the people who are fighting there. I’ve met them – I know them, and I know who they are, ” he said.
According to a report in the Washington Times, the hapless Senator ended up posing for pics with some Islamic kidnappers.
Two men pictured next to Mr. McCain were responsible for kidnapping 11 Lebanese Shiites, press from that country is claiming, as reported in the Daily Mail. And nine of those abducted are still being held hostage, the Daily Star in Beirut claims.
The two suspected kidnappers — Mohamed Nour andAbu Ibrahim — in the photo with Mr. McCain are members of the Northern Storm militant group, who are believed to have planned and executed the abduction, the Daily Star said.Mr. McCain’s office went on the defensive, issuing a statement through spokesman Brian Rogers.
“A number of the Syrians who greeted Sen. McCainupon his arrival in Syria asked to take pictures with him, and as always, the senator complied,” he said, as quoted in the Daily Mail. “[It] would be regrettable” if those pictured with the senator were kidnappers, he added.
McCain went on to chastise the Syrian woman for suggesting that Bashir Assad was anything but a merciless butcher, self righteously declaring, “we have a strong disagreement!”
But he mischaracterized what she said, which was, “whether you like Bashir Assad or not – I am not a fan, either. But at least he has a secular government going on over there…”
