Rand Paul: 80% of the New ObamaCare Enrollees Are Free or Subsidized (Video)

Senator Rand Paul says 80% of the 7.1 million new ObamaCare enrollees are being subsidized by those who are working. (See Obamacare enrollment in three charts for confirmation of this. Also, numbers from a RAND Corporation study suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have actually paid for new policies.)

The Kentucky Senator said in his home state, “everyone is getting healthcare but it’s all free or subsidized.”

Appearing on the Record with Greta Van Susteren, Friday night, Paul said, “the bill is going to come due at some time, and one of the ways the bill becomes due is through rising premiums – I think people are going to pay more for their insurance.” Van Susteren noted that Blue Cross/Blue Shield is already warning that sticker shocks are coming.

Paul said that this is of course why Obama has moved back the next enrollment period to  after the election.

Greta noted that at least in Kentucky, the sticker shock shouldn’t matter since most people are getting it free or subsidized.

Paul told her, “it’s even worse than that. 80% are getting Medicaid – completely free – the other 20% are getting subsidized. Almost no one in my state signed up to pay for insurance. Almost everyone signed up for free or subsidized insurance.”

He continued, “he governor of Kentucky is a big ally of Obama. He goes around saying it’s a $15,000 billion dollar stimulus for Kentucky….the money’s got to come from somewhere!”

Greta asked, “where is it coming from?”

“It’s coming from the taxpayer,” Paul answered. He  later explained that it will probably not be through raised taxes but “we will either borrow or print the money.”  He explained, “the repercussions are the same. Let’s say your goal is to to help poor people – you give them free health care. Sounds noble. But then, by printing up money to pay for it, you raise their prices at the pump, you raise the prices for their food, so as the currency loses its value they think, ‘oh I got something for free’, but then it turns out all their other stuff costs more, and in the end they say, ‘gosh, I’m still poor’ because big government doesn’t really help poor people.”

Washington Times:  Paging Dr. Carson! GOP makes House call for surgeon to replace Obamacare:

With a major Obamacare sign-up deadline past, Republicans are turning their attention to the “replace” half of their repeal and replace strategy, hoping to make up ground lost over the past four years as they seek to show voters that they have an alternative to the president’s health care overhaul.

Retired surgeon Ben Carson sat down with the House Republican health care caucus Thursday to hash out ideas. The doctor urged lawmakers to set some deadlines of their own for writing a plan.

“It doesn’t do any good to have a lot of good ideas but not to get behind one and really push it,” said Mr. Carson, who has been mentioned as a potential Republican presidential contender.

The first enrollment period for Obamacare has ended, and President Obama has claimed success with the sign-ups of 7.1 million Americans in the federal and state health insurance exchanges set up under the law.

Democrats say the final tally means millions now have coverage thanks to provisions that prohibit caps on spending and prevent companies from denying insurance for pre-existing health conditions. They argue that a repeal by Republicans would leave all of those Americans worse off.

Republicans were already under pressure to elucidate how their vision contrasts with that of the Democrats they hope to unseat in November’s midterm elections, and to offer a realistic alternative to Obamacare.

House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said this week that the party is seeking consensus around an alternative plan.

Obama Has Wavered In His Commitment to See That Justice Is Done For Terrorist Attack In Benghazi (Video)

“We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.”  Barack Obama 9/12/2012

And he’s repeated that line or a variation of that line at least a hundred times since then.

The truth:

House Intel Committee Chair Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) told TIME magazine this week that the Obama administration knows where the Benghazi Al-Qaeda terrorists are hiding but refuses to go after them.

Via Jim Hoft

The reason: The Obama administration refuses to classify the attackers as al Qaeda related.

The U.S. military cannot hunt down and kill people responsible for the deadly 2012 attack on an American compound in Benghazi, Libya, as long as the terrorists are not officially deemed members or affiliates of al Qaeda, newly declassified transcripts from congressional hearings show.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Martin Dempsey in testimony on Oct. 10 said the Pentagon’s hands are tied because the groups involved are not covered by the Authorization for Use of Military Force. The AUMF law allows U.S. attacks anywhere in the world only on al Qaeda and “associated forces.”

“The individuals related in the Benghazi attack, those that we believe were either participants or leadership of it, are not ‘authorized use of military force,’ ” Gen. Dempsey told the House Armed Services Committee in his classified testimony during a closed hearing.

The transcript was released on Monday.

“In other words, they don’t fall under the AUMF authorized by the Congress of the United States. So we would not have the capacity to simply find them and kill them either with a remotely-piloted aircraft or with an assault on the ground,” Dempsey said.

Via The Long War Journal, the State Dept. added three chapters of Ansar al Sharia – widely believed to have taken part in the attack – to the governments terrorist designation lists in January of this year.

the US State Department announced today that it has added three chapters of Ansar al Sharia, as well as three of the groups’ leaders, to the government’s terrorist designation lists. Ansar al Sharia groups in Benghazi, Derna, and Tunisia were designated as foreign terrorist organizations, as well as specially designated global terrorist entities.

The three Ansar al Sharia leaders, Sufian Ben Qumu, Ahmed Abu Khattalah, and Seifallah Ben Hassine (a.k.a. Abu Iyad al Tunisi), were also added to the list of specially designated global terrorists.

Ben Qumu is described as “the leader” of Ansar al Sharia Derna, while Khattalah is “a senior leader” of Ansar al Sharia in Benghazi. Seifallah Ben Hassine is the founder of Ansar al Sharia in Tunisia.

The State Department says that Ansar al Sharia Tunisia “is ideologically aligned with al Qaeda and tied to its affiliates, including AQIM” (Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb). The designation confirms The Long War Journal’s reporting on Ansar al Sharia Tunisia’s connections to the al Qaeda network.

The Council Has Spoken!! This Weeks’ Watcher’s Council Results

tribal council 3 (1)

“Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.”- President Ronald Reagab

“Politics: A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.” – Ambrose Beirce, The Devil’s Dictionary

“A whitewashed crow soon shows black again” – Chinese proverb

The Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and the results are in for this week’s Watcher’s Council match up.

Even taking into consideration the normal high level of quality in both the Council and Non-Council entries, this was a tough call with some exceptional pieces to choose from, and the close vote tally reflects it.

For instance, we had a tie this week in the Council category which I, as Watcher have to break.

On the one hand, we had a superb in depth look at the scandal of Leland Yee – Gun Runner, Terrorist Enabler, Progressive Communist by The Noisy Room, an example of how a poster boy for San Francisco’s progressive set presented one face in public and a totally different one in private.
Call it a political kind of Dorian Gray tale.

On the other hand, there was Joshuapundit’s effort, Sharia Rears Its Head In Pennsylvania , a cautionary look at how Islamic sharia law is affecting American jurisprudence.

Noisy room 2 (1)

The choice for me was an easy one.. here’s a slice of The Noisy Room’sexcellent Leland Yee – Gun Runner, Terrorist Enabler, Progressive Communist

For years now, Trevor Loudon has warned about Progressives, their corruption and their oft connection to the Communist underworld… especially in Asian circles of influence. A member of the California Asian Pacific Island Legislative Caucus, Yee has some splainin’ to do… Leland Yee is an excellent example of this ilk of Progressive politician. Yee just got caught stepping in criminal crap big time. This one is sheer poetry.

But he wasn’t the only one this week and he is the third in California alone. It would seem the FBI has developed a hankering for corrupt Democrats suddenly. From bribery in Pennsylvania, where charges were dropped because the judge deemed them ‘racist,’ to the Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina resigning over bribes taken for business favors, it just keeps getting better and better.

Enter Leland Yee, originally — wait for it — from Hawaii. Not only is Lee connected to the Communist underworld and political power brokers in California, he’s been a bad, bad boy and has been gun running in connection to radical Islamic terrorists. A staunch gun control advocate, one has to savor the irony that he was suppressing gun rights, so he could sell arms on the black market to his constituents. A hypocrite extraordinaire, Yee called for Progressive-style transparency and guns for those who could afford them.

You’ve got to give it to Lee, he sported a big set as he flipped the bird to authorities and was running for Secretary of State. That would have been hard to do with cuffs on and behind bars, just sayin’. He’s now withdrawn from the race with more pressing matters to attend to. A 137-page, FBI-sworn affidavit against California State Sen. Leland Yee, as well as over two dozen other individuals, has been filed. This is some good stuff… entertainment and enlightenment for the whole country.

Charges include not only gun running, but wire fraud, money laundering, corruption and bribery. And it gets better. The affidavit contains alleged murder-for-hire plots involving a political consultant close to Yee, as well as large international weapons trafficking operations. These operations included automatic weapons, shoulder-fired missiles, rocket launchers and heavy artillery. Anyone for adding treason to the charges? These weapons were allegedly being brought in from Russia and Islamic rebels in the Philippines.

California, we have a problem:

Out in California, State Senator Leland Yee, a longtime California politician who was praised for his efforts to make government more transparent and authored gun control legislation, was arrested Wednesday, accused of conspiracy to deal firearms and wire fraud. According to the NY Daily News, Yee discussed helping the undercover FBI agent get weapons worth $500,000 to $2.5 million, including shoulder-fired automatic weapons and missiles, and showed the agent the entire process of how to get those weapons from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines into the United States, according to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Emmanuel V. Pascua.

Yee performed “official acts” in exchange for donations from undercover FBI agents, as he sought to dig himself out of a $70,000 debt incurred during a failed San Francisco mayoral bid, according to court documents. Yee is also accused of accepting $10,000 in January 2013 from an undercover agent in exchange for his making a call to the California Department of Public Health in support of a contract under consideration with the agency.

Another individual named in the affidavit is Raymond Chow, aka “Shrimp Boy,” the former leader of a Chinese criminal organization with ties to Hong Kong. Chow is accused of money laundering, conspiracy to receive and transport stolen property and conspiracy to traffic contraband cigarettes.

Yee is the third Democrat senator from California to face charges this year along with Sen. Rod Wright, convicted of perjury and voter fraud, and Sen. Ron Calderon, indicted on federal corruption charges. Wright and Calderon are both taking a voluntary leave of absence, WITH pay of course– so typical.

The IRS Scandal Is Heating Up Again

bamgate

The IRS scandal is heating up on several fronts keeping it in the news and hopefully on the minds of the American people as we head to the midterms.

Former head of tax exempt groups at the IRS Lois Lerner pled the Fifth for a second time, last month, prompting the Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa to consider contempt charges. Today he announced that the the process for holding Lerner in contempt begins next week.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) today announced that the Committee will convene for a business meeting on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 9:00 AM in room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building to consider a resolution holding Lois G. Lerner, former IRS Director of Exempt Organizations, in contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions before Congress on May 22, 2013 and March 5, 2014, at a hearing entitled, “Targeting Americans for their Political Beliefs.”

“Documents and testimony point to Lois Lerner as a senior IRS official responsible for conduct that deprived Americans of their rights to free speech and equal protection under our laws,” said Issa.  “Americans expect accountability and want Congress to do all it can to gather relevant evidence about what occurred and who was responsible so that this never happens again.  Ms. Lerner’s involvement in wrongdoing and refusal to meet her legal obligations has left the Committee with no alternative but to consider a contempt finding.”

Ms. Lerner presided over the IRS division where targeting and improper scrutiny of Tea Party groups took place. She, herself, directed unprecedented scrutiny of Tea Party applicants and worked on new restrictive rules for non-profits after President Obama and other prominent Democrats expressed outrage at the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.  Lerner is the only IRS official who has refused to testify before Congress in the IRS targeting investigation.  At one point her lawyer actually told the Committee she was ready to testify publicly, but subsequently rescinded that offer.

The Committee released the report, “Lois Lerner’s Involvement in the IRS Targeting of Tax-Exempt Organizations”, on March 11, 2014.  As Ms. Lerner is the only IRS official who has refused to testify to Congress, this report is based on e-mails, documents, and other testimony about her role in targeting and efforts to mislead investigators about improper conduct. The Oversight Committee continues to conduct a broad investigation of IRS targeting abuses beyond Ms. Lerner’s personal role.

Additional background about the contempt process:

Contempt of Congress, as defined in 2 U.S.C. §192 states as follows:

Every person who having been summoned as a witness by the authority of either House of Congress to give testimony or to produce papers upon any matter under inquiry before either House, or any joint committee established by a joint or concurrent resolution of the two Houses of Congress, or any committee of either House of Congress, willfully makes default, or who, having appeared, refuses to answer any question pertinent to the question under inquiry, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of not more than [$100,000] nor less than $100 and imprisonment in a common jail for not less than one month nor more than twelve months.

On March 26, 2014, the House Office of General Counsel wrote a memo to Chairman Issa refuting claims brought forward by Members of the Democratic Minority that the Committee had not followed procedures necessary to hold Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress.  The memo notes the significance of the fact that the Committee passed a resolution, on June 28, 2013, that Ms. Lerner had in fact waived her Fifth Amendment right not to answer questions.

If the full House of Representatives ultimately holds Ms. Lerner in contempt, the statute directs the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia “to bring the matter before the grand jury for its action.”  While in two past instances House contempt findings have also been accompanied by resolutions authorizing civil action, each still included a criminal contempt finding.  Civil action has only been authorized in cases where the President of the United States has asserted executive privilege over documents or testimony.  To date, President Obama has not asserted executive privilege to prevent Ms. Lerner’s from testifying.

The April 10 proceeding will be open to the public and debate by Members of the Committee.

Founding-Fathers-IRS

“Lois Lerner is the focal point of the IRS targeting scandal”, the ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow told Fox News recently. “It was her office that did this, it was her leadership that presented this. She has a series of emails, some of which have been released, and others that have not been, (and you can imagine what those might say.) But the ones that have been released show that this was politically motivated by Lois Lerner and by people higher up than Lois Lerner. In one sense she was the key implememter, but I don’t think that this originated with her and they’re very hesitant….”

Barack Obama

He went on to say, “we don’t yet have the depth and detail of what was going on here.” He went back to Obama’s SOTU speech of 2010, which is what many people think was the trigger for the targeting that would come. “With in weeks, action started at the IRS”, Sekulow said.

On Wednesday, B. Todd Jones, director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had trouble explaining to Congress why his agents made two visits to True the Vote’s Catherine Englebrecht’s place of business in a 13-month period.

Englebrecht testified about the visits at a hearing last month before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. She explained that shortly after filing the IRS form to establish 501(3)(c) and (3)(4) tax exempt organizations, “an assortment of federal entities, including law enforcement agencies” came knocking at her door. Engelbrecht declared, “in nearly two decades of running our small business, my husband and I never dealt with any government agency outside of filing our annual tax returns. We had never been audited, we had never been investigated, but all that changed upon submitting applications for the non-profit statuses of True the Vote and King Street.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is one of the agencies that harrassed the Engelbrechts, conducting “comprehensive audits” at their place of business in 2012 and in 2013.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) had an opportunity to query Jones about those visits during an Oversight and Reform hearing, Wednesday,  on the ATF’s botched undercover storefront operations.

Jones, clearly deploying the Regime’s tried and true “run out the clock” strategy, provided no answers for Jordon and no promise of ever doing so. The documents Jorden requested six weeks ago need to be subpoenaed.

Savor the words of the acting IRS Commissioner re the IRS’s new regulations for 501 (C) (4) non profit organizations.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, released the following statement regarding IRS Commissioner John Koskinen’s remarks at the National Press Club on Tuesday.

“When Americans speak up, it makes a difference,” said Sen. Cruz. “A record number of Americans spoke out against a regulation being considered by the IRS to stifle free speech of 501(c)(4) political groups. As a result, it is unlikely those rules will be implemented this year. This is a substantial victory for the grassroots and should serve as motivation to continue pressuring the IRS to drop the rule completely.”

irs_obama_sign

Specifically, Koskinen said:

Another recommendation by the IG was that the Treasury Department and the IRS should provide clearer guidance on how to assess the permissibility of 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations’ activities. So last November, Treasury and the IRS issued proposed regulations that are designed to clarify the extent to which a 501(c)(4) organization can engage in political activity without endangering its tax-exempt status.

While I was not involved in the issuance of this draft proposal, because it happened before I was confirmed as Commissioner, I believe it is extremely important to make this area of regulation as clear as possible. Not only does that help the IRS properly enforce the law, but clearer regulations will also give a better roadmap to applicants, and will help those that already have 501(c)(4) status properly administer their organizations without unnecessary fears of losing their tax-exempt status.

During the comment period, which ended in February, we received more than 150,000 comments. That’s a record for an IRS rulemaking comment period. In fact, if you take all the comments on all Treasury and IRS draft proposals over the last seven years and double that number, you come close to the number of comments we are now beginning to review and analyze. It’s going to take us a while to sort through all those comments, hold a public hearing, possibly repropose a draft regulation and get more public comments. This means that it is unlikely we will be able to complete this process before the end of the year.

Mission accomplished.

target tea party

The Washington Post gave Koskinen 3 Pinocchios for some of his  testimony before Congress, last week:

The Blaze: Washington Post: ‘Cat’s Out of the Bag’ on IRS Targeting Scandal:

The Washington Post says it’s just “bureaucratese” in fact checking IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, who told Congress the tax collecting agency was never accused of targeting tea party organizations and other conservative groups from 2010 through 2012.

Koskinen testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on March 25, but the Post on Thursday, said it spent several days fact checking his testimony before giving it three Pinocchios. The newspaper’s fact check column has a maximum of four Pinocchios.

“The Inspector General found inappropriate criteria were used to select organizations for further review – he did not refer to it as targeting,” the commissioner told the committee. He also said, “Yes, inappropriate criteria were used. I don’t think I used the word target, but I do acknowledge that applications were delayed unnecessarily and for too long.”
