Apparently, 4 Terrorists Tried To Cross The Southern Border on 9/10

Remember those Judicial Watch alerts about Islamic terrorists in Mexico planning to cross the Southern border to attack the homeland on September 11?

The recent increase in security at a key Army base near a Mexican border city where Islamic terrorists are confirmed to be operating and planning an attack on the United States indicates that the facility is a target, according to senior military experts contacted by Judicial Watch.

Last week JW reported that the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) is working in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez and planning to attack the United States with car bombs or other vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED). High-level federal law enforcement, intelligence and other sources confirmed to JW that a warning bulletin for an imminent terrorist attack on the border has been issued. Agents across a number of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense agencies have all been placed on alert and instructed to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning this imminent terrorist threat.

Remember how those rumors were shot down by Homeland Security and the FBI?

Well…

At the House Committee on Homeland Security hearing, Wednesday, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) asked Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson about a report that four men with terrorist ties were caught trying to cross the Texas border on September 10.

Rep. Chaffetz, who also chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, told Johnson that four individuals with “ties to known terrorist organizations in the Middle East” were apprehended on September 10th trying the cross into the U.S. through two different stations in Texas.

When asked if he was aware of that situation, Johnson said, “I’ve heard reports to that effect. I don’t know the accuracy of the reports or how much credence to give them, but I’ve heard reports to that effect.”

(No doubt he and Obama read the reports in the papers.)

Chaffetz appeared on “The Kelly File” Wednesday night to discuss this.

“He’s the secretary of Homeland Security […] it was, I thought, a simple question,” he said.

Chaffetz revealed some shocking numbers: 466,000 people have been captured crossing the border over the last 351 days, and Homeland Security says 157,000 people got away. Those who were captured came from 143 different countries, including Syria, Iraq and Iran.

“We have a porous border […] I’m worried about [ISIS] actually coming to the United States and crossing that porous border and getting into the homeland.”

Of course Johnson knows. “Operation Don’t Make Obama Look Bad” is  in effect because the most transparent administration in American history doesn’t want the American people to be any more alarmed about the porous border than we already are.

Congress needs to be a little more aggressive in demanding answers from the Regime. If four ISIS terrorists were apprehended at the border, where are they? Are they being detained or did the Regime make Border Security let them go?

Judicial Watch: Feds in El Paso: Rep. O’Rourke Called to Ban Contact with Judicial Watch

Federal law enforcement sources in El Paso say that a United States congressman called their office to prohibit contact with Judicial Watch in the aftermath of a disturbing story confirming that Islamic terrorists are operating in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez.

Sources tell JW that Beto O’Rourke, a Democrat who represents El Paso in the U.S. House of Representatives, telephoned the area offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) in an effort to identify—and evidently intimidate—sources that may have been used by JW. On August 29 JW reported that the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) is working in Juarez and planning to attack the United States with car bombs or other vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED).

In the piece JW cites high-level federal law enforcement, intelligence and other sources confirming that a warning bulletin for an imminent terrorist attack on the border has been issued. Agents across a number of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense agencies have all been placed on alert and instructed to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning this imminent terrorist threat. In the aftermath of JW’s story Ft. Bliss, an El Paso Army base near Juarez, increased security measures and the sheriff in Midland County Texas—located halfway between Ft. Worth and El Paso—confirmed that he received an alert bulletin warning from the feds that ISIS may have formed a terrorist cell in or near Juarez.

The Corner: Immigration Agent Union: Obama Admin ‘Widened the Loopholes’ for ISIS to Enter U.S.

“Our caseworkers cannot even do in-person interviews for people seeking citizenship, they cannot enforce restrictions on welfare use, and they even lack even the basic office space to properly function,” union president Kenneth Palinkas said in the statement. “Applications for entry are rubber-stamped, the result of grading agents by speed rather than discretion. We’ve become the visa clearinghouse for the world.”

President Obama’s potential executive action to grant legal status to certain illegal immigrants, including those who have overstayed their visas, is another opportunity for people “who are being targeted for radicalization or who already subscribe to radicalized views” to stay in the country, the union said.

Eric (Why is this man still Atty. General?) Holder Still Refusing To Hand Over Fast And Furious Docs

Eric-Holder-AG

For some inexplicable reason, Eric (Why is this man still Atty General?) Holder doesn’t want to hand over a detailed list of the thousands of documents being withheld from Congress under Obama’s Executive Privilege claim.

A federal Judge ordered the DOJ to produce the “Vaughn list” back in July in response to a Judicial Watch FOIA lawsuit.  A month later, a federal judge ordered the DOJ to turn over “a privilege log of withheld documents to the House Oversight Committee.” Both requests are supposed to be completed by October 1, but get this – Eric (why is this man still Atty Gen?) Holder is stonewalling da court.

You would almost think he has something to hide.

Via POLITICO

Attorney General Eric Holder is again asking a federal court to delay the transfer of disputed documents relating to Operation Fast and Furious to a House committee.

In a new court filing Monday night, Justice Department lawyers asked U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson not to require Holder to turn over any of the roughly 64,000 pages of documents to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee until after her rulings can be appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

“The Department respectfully submits that it would be preferable for the parties, this Court, and the D.C. Circuit — if an appeal were taken — to have any injunctive order await the conclusion of the district court litigation to allow for orderly and complete appellate proceedings,” DOJ lawyers wrote.

Jackson has previously denied DOJ permission to file an immediate appeal, although lawyers for Holder indicated in the new filing (posted here) that they may do so anyway. Any appeal is likely to take months and perhaps more than a year to resolve. If that process does not begin until Jackson rules definitively on the the executive privilege claim President Barack Obama has made for many of the documents, the timeline for the case being resolved could begin to approach the end of the Obama administration.

Townhall’s Katie Pavlich says, “how convenient that the appeals process will bump right up against the end of Obama’s, and therefore Holder’s, time in office.

This tactic and strategy has been used by Holder since the beginning to run out the clock until a new administration comes into office and dumps the case.

Regardless, Holder is still required to produce a list of documents by October 1, which will give us significant insight into the kind of documents the Department of Justice is trying so desperately to hide.

It would be nice if that now archaic concept – “rule of law” were still in force in this country. But as you may have guessed – as far as the ruling class is concerned, that is quite a thing of the past. Every technique the Obama  regime has used to get away with scandal after scandal will be used by every administration to succeed him – and when the fundamental transformation is complete –  we’re most of the way there –  those administrations will be Social Democrat  because they will have achieved their long sought after permanent majority. I guess congratulations are in order before they take us over the cliff.

House Authorizes Obama’s Plan To Arm and Train Syrian Rebels

al-qaeda-usaid

I really really want to be wrong about thinking this is a huge mistake, but I have a very bad feeling about arming people with values and loyalties so antithetical to ours with American weapons. My greatest fear is that these weapons will eventually be turned on American soldiers, and will lead to more Christians and ethnic minorities being slaughtered in the Middle East.

Why on earth do we think this is a good idea?

Via USA Today:

A wary Congress voted Wednesday to authorize President Obama’s mission to arm and train Syrian rebel forces as part of the administration’s effort to dismantle the threat posed by the Islamic State militant group.

The bipartisan 273-156 vote came after days of debate in which lawmakers across the political spectrum expressed doubts about the scope and merits of the mission but conceded that the potential threat to the U.S. is too great to ignore.

Roll call of the votes, here.

The authorization is limited in scope to training up to 5,000 members of the Syrian opposition in Saudi Arabia. It provides no new funding and requires the administration to provide status reports to Congress. The Obama administration said the mission may be funded by international contributions, but the resolution authorizes the Pentagon to shift funds from other accounts if necessary.

Lawmakers expressed doubts about the ability to vet the Syrian rebel forces and warned that the arms provided to them could ultimately land in enemy hands. “We don’t know if somehow down the line they will turn our guns right back on us,” said Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., a member of the House Armed Services Committee, who opposed the resolution.

Sanchez also said there was not enough of an international coalition behind a strategy that is still being formed. “I’d like to know who our coalition is, and what they’re going to do before I vote for any plan,” she said.

For once I agree with Loretta Sanchez.

Congress Should Vote No On Arming the Syrian Rebels

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote Wednesday on giving the Obama administration the authority to arm and train Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

The authorization was introduced on Monday as an amendment to a stopgap funding bill and is expected to pass. It will then be sent to the U.S. Senate for approval.

The idea is to pass the amendment as quickly as possible and without a debate on the $500 million the White House said it needs to pay for it.

I’m all for fighting ISIS, but I’m hoping and praying this amendment fails.

As Representative Rick Nolan, an anti-war Democrat from Minnesota said, “No matter who we give our arms to, they inevitably end up being used against us.” Nolan plans on voting against the amendment.

But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Boehner apparently believe the risky gambit is worth a try.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, said he expected it would pass with bipartisan support. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the chamber’s top Republican, said he supported the plan and was pleased it expires on Dec. 11, the same day as the spending bill.

“I’d like to take another look at it in a couple of months and see how it’s working out,” McConnell told reporters.

House Speaker John Boehner faces the objections of fellow Republicans who do not want to give the Democratic president what he wants and those who think Obama has not gone far enough, He said he saw no reason for Congress not to back arming the rebels, although he had reservations over the broader strategy.

“If our goal here is to destroy ISIL, we’ve got to do more than train a few folks in Syria and train a few folks in Iraq and drop some bombs,” Boehner told reporters, using an alternative name for the Islamic State group.

What if the “folks” we train in Syria have been fighting alongside ISIS? What if indeed some of them have signed a pact with ISIS not to fight each other? What if the rebels we train use the weapons to attack the Assad Regime instead of ISIS? What if many the rebels can not be trusted because in their culture it is permissible to lie to infidels?

Via Patrick Poole at PJ Media, an FSA brigade commander said that his forces were working with two U.S. designated terrorist organizations, the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, near the Syrian/Lebanon border.

The Daily Star in Lebanon reported on Monday:

“We are collaborating with the Islamic State and the Nusra Front by attacking the Syrian Army’s gatherings in … Qalamoun,” said Bassel Idriss, the commander of an FSA-aligned rebel brigade.
“We have reached a point where we have to collaborate with anyone against unfairness and injustice,” confirmed Abu Khaled, another FSA commander who lives in Arsal.

It gets worse.

According to The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group that monitors Syria’s civil war,  moderate Syrian rebels and ISIS struck a cease-fire deal on Friday.

The groups agreed to a non-aggression pact in which they promised not to attack each other.

Rachel Roubein of The National Journal wonders how we’re going to know which Syrians to arm?

There isn’t a formal definition of a Syrian moderate, said Leila Hilal of the New America Foundation. But implicit in the word, she says, are a few criteria: a Syrian who is a nationalist and is fighting for a secular, democratic, and inclusive state.

That definition leaves a lot of room, Hilal said, and there are ample rebel fighters on the ground. Previously, the Syrian National Coalition could have used its Supreme Military Council to help determine who is a moderate, she said. But that group has essentially been disbanded, and now determining who exactly fits the “moderate” bill is done on an ad hoc basis.

***

“One of the problems is that whether or not someone is fighting under an Islamic banner or a Syrian revolutionary flag, they’re often working together on different fronts,” said Hilal, a senior fellow with New America’s International Security Program. “If they’re fighting to take over the military base or airport … different groups ideologically predisposed will be fighting together.”

A political framework is key, she said, rather than handpicking rebels to do the fighting.

“In my mind, in order to mount an effective counterterrorism strategy, you really need a robust nationalist force that isn’t just a select group of so-called moderates.”

Some lawmakers, such as GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, said the president is picking the wrong people to fight this war.

“What would giving more money and more weapons to these guys do?” Bachmann said Thursday. “It would build up ISIS. It wouldn’t defeat ISIS, it would build them up because the so-called vetted moderates, our supposed good guys, wouldn’t be fighting the enemy. I think what would happen is we would end up funding the enemy.”

There is of course a “high degree of confidence” in the vetting process that takes place before the US decides who to train.

“The Department of Defense works closely with the intelligence community, using all of its databases in the vetting process,” but the possibility that the weapons will fall into the wrong hands seems to me more like a probability in the fog of this brutal war.

On Fox News with Greta Van Susteren, Tuesday evening, John Bolton expressed his opposition to arming the Syrians among others, and said there is no way to win against ISIS without US boots on the ground.  He said it is a huge mistake to place the safety of America in the hands of the Iraqi army, the Free Syrian Army, the Sunnis, and the Kurds. (Personally, I could support the Iraqi Army and the Kurds – just not the Syrian rebels.)

“The fact is putting American safety in the hands of others who have failed before, like the Iraqi army for god sakes, is going to endanger us and cost us more in terms of American lives down the road,” he said.
