Gowdy: It’s About Damn Time We Use the Power of the Purse (Video)

On Wednesday, Republicans in the House passed a bill that funds DHS for the rest of the year, but stipulates that none of the funds may be used for Obama’s executive amnesty.

Obama has of course, vowed to veto the bill, and with terrorism in the news again, Democrats are using national security as a way to hammer the GOP for allowing the DHS funding to lapse.

On the House floor, Wednesday, Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY) gave a “rousing” speech recalling the national unity that followed the terrorist attack of 9/11/2001. Speaking truth to power, he declared, “this bill is not about homeland security, it’s about Republicans political security!” (An amazing admission of what Dems know amnesty is all about, n’est pas?) He characterized the Republican bill to stop Obama’s executive amnesty as “an injustice to those who suffered on 9/11 and still remember that.” He continued, “for the first time in history they are holding security hostage to the ugly politics of immigration!” He went on like that for about five more excruciating minutes, of course eliciting enthusiastic applause from many of the same people who for eight years did everything they could to undermine national security under Bush.

When it was Gowdy’s turn to speak, he blasted Obama for his executive overreach on immigration reform.

“This, Madam Speaker, despite the fact that the very same president, over twenty different times, said he lacked the power to do what he just did.

And he repeatedly said he is not a king. Now, Madam Speaker, his position may have changed, after the election I hasten to add, but the Constitution has not.”

After a disruption on the House floor interrupted Gowdy’s speech for a few moments, he continued, and with the Democrats in mind, said, “I’ll back up in case they missed it,”  which elicited grins from the reps behind him (Mia Love on the right, Scalise to his left – not sure who the guys directly behind him were.) Gowdy received enthusiastic applause when he implored Congress to stand up for the American people:

This is not a fight between Republicans and Democrats. This is not even a fight over immigration reform. This is a fight over whether this branch of government will ever find the courage to stand up for itself.

This same document that this and all presidents swears to defend gives this body certain tools – tools like the power of the purse. And it’s about damn time we use that tool.

Gowdy was one of the 67 congressmen who voted against the Cromnibus bill in December.

Last February, he told Jeanine Pirro on Fox News that congress could remove funding for Obama’s pet projects and vacations using the appropriations process.

People don’t like the Affordable Care Act but they don’t like our tactic of shutting down the government,” he said. “OK. Fine. We got that. We still have appropriation bills that are coming. So what we ought to do is say, Mr. President, you want to run roughshod over the Constitution, we have the power of the purse. We’re not going to fund your pet projects. We’re not going to fund your green energy initiatives. We are not going it fund your vacations.”

In March of 2014, Congressman Gowdy along with Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) introduced “the Executive Needs to Faithfully Observe and Respect Congressional Enactments of the Law (ENFORCE the Law) Act (ENFORCE the Law) Act (H.R. 4138) to rein in the growing problem of executive overreach and restore balance to the separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution.”

The introduction of this bill follows the House Judiciary Committee’s careful consideration of the President’s failure to faithfully execute our laws. The Committee has held two hearings on this issue, at which members heard from constitutional scholars on the scope of this problem and legislative solutions. The House Judiciary Committee will markup the ENFORCE the Law Act tomorrow at 10:30am in 2141 Rayburn.

The bill passed the House on March 12 but died in the Senate. Now with a Republican controlled Senate, it should be taken up again.

What the Heck, Pope Francis?

It gives me no pleasure – in fact – it saddens me greatly to have to criticize my Pope but he gives me no choice with his latest utterings. I am through holding my tongue. It is clear to me that Pope Francis lacks the intellectual heft of our last two excellent popes.

I can’t believe he actually said this.

Asked by a French reporter to compare freedom of religion and freedom of expression as human rights, Pope Francis linked his answer to the Jan. 7 attacks at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, apparently in retaliation for the newspaper’s publication of cartoons mocking Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

“Let’s go to Paris, let’s speak clearly,” the pope said. “One cannot offend, make war, kill in the name of one’s own religion, that is, in the name of God.”

So far, so good…but this would be an obvious thing for a pope to say.

The pope said freedom of expression was a “fundamental human right” like freedom of religion, but one that must be exercised “without giving offense.”

Offering a hypothetical example that referred to the Vatican’s planner of papal trips, who was standing beside him as he spoke, the pope said: “It’s true, one cannot react violently, but if Dr. (Alberto) Gasbarri, a great friend, says a swear word against my mother, then he is going to get a punch. But it’s normal, it’s normal. One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith.”

That is just so dumb.

Noah Rothman at Hot Air explains…

No, it’s not “normal.” The individual moved to violence over an insult has lost control, and that’s unacceptable. It is unequivocally wrong to hit someone in the face regardless of the circumstances that led to that outburst, which is a lesson that parents around the world teach their children every day. Good luck now, mom and dad. When even the Pope says it’s “normal” to go on a violent rampage because your feelings were hurt, those opposed to this uncivilized behavior have lost the ability to appeal to moral authority.

When broadcasters effusively praise the bravery of the Charlie Hebdo journalists but refuse to show the work they are praising for fear of retribution from either extremists or attorneys; when the head of the Catholic Church can find some sensibleness in religious violence; when those who speak their minds are imprisoned for doing so, you know that Europe is on the verge of a new dark age.

Somebody is going to come up with a more nuanced translation for what he said, but I’m sick of the “bad translation” excuse. We didn’t have this problem with the last two popes. What is wrong with this man?!

Whether he’s talking about economics, social issues, immigration, Islam, or the obviously fraudulent “climate change” hysteria – this pope has both feet planted firmly in the world. He seems to care too much about worldly opinions and gravitates toward left-wing solutions.. Worst of all, on many issues, he appears to be an ally of our current president. Proof positive that something is very very wrong…

That was apparent to me early on when he made a big show of eschewing the popemobile and his lavish Papal accommodations in favor of a more humble mode of transportation and personal abode.  I was looking at his “open sided” popemobile in the Philippines. It looks more expensive than the old one. But then, I never cared about any of that. I think the pope should be kept safe. His acclaimed “modesty” always looked like moral preening to me.

A good Catholic lives IN the world – but is not OF the world. We will always be in conflict with worldly opinions. But that’s okay. The eternal TRUTH is what matters.

The problem with Pope Francis is he seems to be wrong about a lot of important stuff and that’s a terrible thing for a Catholic to have to say about a pope. I want to be wrong about this. I truly do.

Our Weasel Of The Week!!!

Once again, It’s time to present this week’s statuette of shame, The Golden Weasel!!

Every Tuesday, the Council nominates some of the slimiest, most despicable characters in public life for some deed of evil, cowardice or corruption they’ve performed. Then we vote to single out one particular Weasel for special mention, to whom we award the statuette of shame, our special, 100% plastic Golden Weasel. This week’s nominees were all despicable, but the votes are in and we have our winner…the envelope please…

Progressive Whack Job Sally Kohn!!

Nice Deb:I nominate Sally Kohn for being one of the first leftists out of the gate to make absurd equivocations, attack strawmen, and expose her own gross hypocrisy in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo slaughter in Paris, last week.

In a double whammy of stupidity, she tweeted:

Christians or Jews killing in name of religion = Extremists

But Muslims killing in name of religion = All Muslims??!

Come on…

Fallacy #1 She seemed to be suggesting that Christians and Jews commit terrorist attacks in similar numbers as Muslims.

Fallacy #2 She was also suggesting that a significant number of conservatives were accusing all Muslims of being terrorists. When I asked her who was doing that — name names, she ignored me.

She also put her gross hypocrisy on display with this tweet:

It is not inconsistent to believe in free speech AND be against insulting other people’s faith traditions. #CharlieHedbo

It took conservatives approximately two seconds to find examples of Kohn insulting other people’s “faith tradition” on Twitter here and here:

Those tweets are just a small sample of the irritatingly inane weasel-speak coming from Kohn in the past week.

Whoa, a surprise winner in a tough field, CNN’s radical progressive fruitcake Sally Kohn is living proof that having education doesn’t necessarily mean you’re smart or have even a modicum of that facility known as critical thinking. Would you believe that our winner this week had a JD from NYU (she apparently never took or failed to pass the bar) and  a master’s degree in public administration from the famous Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service? Or that she held a program fellowship at the infamous Ford Foundation doling out an annual $15 million in grants to her fellow progs? It’s true!

So here are some more samples of all that brain power in action , easily located on the web:

Benefiting from white privilege is automatic. Defending white privilege is a choice.

It is not your personal fault that Michael Brown was shot and killed or that we have deep and structural racial bias in America. But that bias is nonetheless a reality, and so you do have a responsibility as to whether you are part of the problem or part of the solution. Just like you’re mistaken if you don’t think white is a race, you’re mistaken if you think you can remain neutral.
Conservatives, do u not attribute lack of black Oscar winners to implicit racial bias? And if not, then what?

(Since when do ‘conservatives make up the majority of Oscar voters???)
This one, you’ll have to hear to believe…Sally Kohn writes a rant-filled blog article accusing Michell Malkin of ‘incivility’and the two of them face off on Sean Hannity’s show.

via Twitter: After stepping down, Eric Holder has ruled out moving to Salem because he’s tired of witch hunts.

There’s lots more, But I think you get my drift.

What’s most interesting to me though is Sally Kohn’s absolute fetish for defending Islam and attacking ‘fundamentalist Christianity and Fundamentalist Judaism.’

Like her fellow CNN host Anderson Cooper, Sally Kohn is openly gay as well as being, at least in terms or her birth, a Jew. I wonder if she’s ever stopped to consider that while those ‘fundamentalist’  Christians and Jews she constantly attacks are no real threat to her whatsoever, a significant amount of the Muslims she constantly sucks up to and makes excuses for would slit her throat or stone her to death in a halal minute?

The same thing crossed my mind when I heard and interview Anderson Cooper did when he constantly asked a guest critical of Islam,  “have you  ever read the Holy Qu’ran?”

The Qu’ran certainly has nothing in it that calls for  anything remotely holy  for Anderson Cooper or Sally Quinn! Yet she persists. Y’know, even the lowest members of the animal kingdom have a survival reflex….

Ah, well. Come on up and get your Weasel, Ms. Kohn. Oh, by the way, you know, you  beat out Barack Obama for this weeks’ Weasel. Aren’t you ashamed of benefiting from your white privilege like that? Aren’t you going to apologize, or are you just part of the problem? Well, we’re waiting…check your privilege, Sally Kohn!

Well, there it is.

Check back next Tuesday to see who next week’s nominees for Weasel of the Week are!

Make sure to tune in every Monday for the Watcher’s Forum, and remember, every Wednesday, the Council has its weekly contest with the members nominating two posts each, one written by themselves and one written by someone from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council. The votes are cast by the Council, and the results are posted on Friday morning.

It’s a weekly magazine of some of the best stuff written in the blogosphere, and you won’t want to miss it…or any of the other fantabulous Watcher’s Council content.

Ralph Peters: Obama Would Have “Easier Time Dealing With GWOT If Terrorists Were Southern Baptists or Israeli Jews”

That Lt. Col. Ralph Peters has been on quite a tear lately. And he must be good for ratings, because he’s been on Fox every day this week.

On Hannity, Wednesday night, the host wanted to talk about the apparent snubs by French President Hollande toward Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, which Peters felt was bad judgement but could be explained by France’s geopolitical interests.

“What I find inexplicable is President Obama and his cabinet’s refusal to go – to participate – the apparent order to even Eric Holder not to show up even though he was in Paris,” Peters said, repeating a suggestion he made earlier this week, that cabinet members were ordered not to go.

Sean pressed Peters to explain what possible reason Obama had to behave this way.

“I think it goes back to Obama’s insistence that there’s no such thing as Islamist terror,” Peters declared. “And Obama — once he makes up his mind about something — I suspect he made up his mind about Islam 30-40 years ago — you can’t move him. He can’t learn from new facts. And even though it’s six years into his office, he’s seen the proliferation of Islamist terror, literally around the world, he’s still clinging to this idea that Islam is somehow benign.”

He added, “You’ve got to look at the background of the man – in Indonesia, his nutcase left-wing mom, all his years in Chicago and elsewhere in the company of leftists… And I do believe …that the president romanticizes Islam, and he really sees the religion of Islam as oppressed while he sees Christianity and Judaism as the oppressors. I sincerely believe this president would have an easier time dealing with a war on terror if the terrorists were Southern Baptists or Israeli Jews.”

NRO: Krauthammer’s Take: Islamic Terrorism Is Not on the Run, It’s Out in the Open

On Wednesday’s Special Report, Charles Krauthammer said the Obama administration’s distinction between “core al-Qaeda” and various groups of Islamic terrorists around the world has become functionally meaningless.

“What you’ve got is a competition between, on the one hand, ISIS, on the other hand, core al Qaeda with its core and its affiliates, and the fact that we focus on one or the other is beside the point,” Krauthammer said. “What’s new is the geography of this terrorism. Each of these now is developing its own sovereign territory.”

Andrew McCarthy, NRO: I’m Glad Obama Skipped Paris

Over the objections of the Egyptian government, the administration invited top officials of the then-banned Muslim Brotherhood to Obama’s Cairo speech — notwithstanding that the Brotherhood is rabidly anti-American and had just been proved in an American criminal trial (the Holy Land Foundation case) to be the driving force behind a multimillion-dollar Hamas-support conspiracy. After the Egyptian government fell, Secretary Clinton exerted pressure on the generals then in control to cede power to the elected Brotherhood government, which had vowed to implement a sharia constitution. When the generals agreed to step aside, and the Islamists predictably released terrorist suspects, stepped up the persecution of non-Muslims, and engineered adoption of a sharia constitution, the Obama administration continued to support it with lavish financial and military aid — aid it threatened to cut off only after the Egyptian armed forces, with broad public support, ousted the Brotherhood from power.

Obama is so preternaturally averse to acknowledging jihadist terrorism that he absurdly rebranded the War on Terror as “Overseas Contingency Operations.” His administration refused to acknowledge that the Fort Hood Massacre, in which a brazen jihadist mass-murdered thirteen American soldiers, was jihadist terrorism, insisting, instead, on the ludicrous label of “workplace violence” — belittling the heroism and ultimate sacrifice of those who were about to deploy to battle terrorists in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, when Afghan Muslims rioted and murdered over the accidental destruction of Korans, Obama . . . apologized to Afghanistan.

The president and his underlings purged information about Islamic supremacism and its instigation of terrorism from materials used to train intelligence, military, and law-enforcement personnel. Instructors who lectured on these materials were terminated, as were others who refused to conform to the administration’s delusional, counter-historical, counter-commonsense smiley-face jihad.

Consistent with the administration’s undermining of the First Amendment in the Istanbul process, the Justice Department refused to rule out proposals to criminalize speech unflattering to Islam. In congressional testimony, Attorney General Eric Holder refused to utter the words “radical Islam,” much less to concede the nexus between Islamic-supremacist doctrine and terrorist attacks by Muslims. Even this weekend, after the jihad mass murders in Paris made it politically impossible to resist the word “terrorism” and the discussion of Islam’s connection to it, Holderrejected the phrase “radical Islam” –  blathering, instead, about how terrorists “use a corrupted version of Islam” to rationalize their attacks (while conveniently omitting mention of the authoritative scriptures and mainstream sharia jurists endorsing jihadist terror).

Gateway Pundit: ONE WEEK AFTER PARIS TERROR ATTACKS – Obama Releases Five More Gitmo Detainees

One week after the Paris terrorist attacks Barack Obama has decided to release five more Yemeni Guantanamo terrorists.

Al Qaeda in Yemen took credit for the Paris attacks in a video released Wednesday.

The terrorists will go to Oman and Estonia.

He is relentlessly evil.
