Fox News:The Five: Is Donald Trump a ‘menace to American conservatism’?

That’s only true right now, Donald. Wait until the general election campaign begins and all the guns are pointed at you.

Adiet, caffeine-free Marxist (really, the only thing wrong with being a Marxist is being a Marxist); a driven, leftist crook; and an explosive, know-nothing demagogue — all are competing to see who can be even more like Mussolini than is Obama. But in the caudillo department, surpassing even our own Evita, the Donald wins.

Forget hair like the tinsel on discarded Christmas trees. Forget the long-term connections to New York politichiens, into which scores of opposition researchers and Pulitzer-seeking media moles are undoubtedly tunneling at this very moment. Forget his former wife’s claim that he kept a book of Hitler’s speeches at his bedside. Forget even his raging egomania, matched only by Obama’s, which the president sometimes tries to conceal beneath a laughably transparent gossamer of false modesty.

And forget trying to determine whether he’s a conservative. Given that, at the suggestion of Bill Clinton, he has like a tapeworm invaded the schismatically weakened body of the Republican party, it’s a pointless question, because, like Allah in Islamic theology, he is whatever he pleases to be at the moment, the only principle being the triumph of his will.

All such things, except (maybe) his hair, are disqualifications for high office, but two fundamental portents of disaster usually pass unnoticed: Like Obama, he is astoundingly ignorant of everything that to govern a powerful, complex, influential, and exceptional nation such as ours he would have to know.

I recall that 30 or more years ago he said he could master the politics of the Cold War, nuclear strategy, and arms control in two weeks, the proof being that he had fixed the Wollman ice-skating rink. Evidently he didn’t spare the time, revealing in debate that he was clueless about the nuclear triad — something that could be rather dangerous if the person always at his side with the briefcase of nuclear codes cuffed to his wrist were not a stolid military officer but Britney Spears or Ozzy Osbourne (and don’t count that out).

He doesn’t know the Constitution, history, law, political philosophy, nuclear strategy, diplomacy, defense, economics beyond real estate, or even, despite his low-level-mafioso comportment, how ordinary people live. But trumping all this is a greater flaw presented as his chief strength. Governing a great nation in parlous times is far more than making “deals.” Compared with the weight of the office he seeks, his deals are microscopic in scale, and as he faced far deeper complexities he would lead the country into continual Russian roulette. If despite his poor judgment he could engage talented advisers, as they presented him with contending and fateful options the buck would stop with a man who simply grasps anything that floats by. Following Obama’s, a Trump presidency would be yet more adventure tourism for a formerly serious republic.

Mark Steyn makes some excellent counterpoints:

The movement conservatives at National Review make a pretty nice living out of “ideas, ideology, philosophy, policy, and so forth”. The voters can’t afford that luxury: They live in a world where, in large part due to the incompetence of the national Republican Party post-Reagan, Democrat ideas are in the ascendant. And they feel that this is maybe the last chance to change that.

Go back to that line “When Reagan first ran for governor of California…” Gosh, those were the days, weren’t they? But Reagan couldn’t get elected Governor of California now, could he? Because the Golden State has been demographically transformed. From my book The [Un]documented Mark Steyn:

According to the Census, in 1970 the ‘Non-Hispanic White’ population of California was 78 per cent. By the 2010 Census, it was 40 per cent. Over the same period, the 10-per cent Hispanic population quadrupled and caught up with whites.

That doesn’t sound terribly ‘natural’, does it? If one were informed that, say, the population of Nigeria had gone from 80 per cent black in 1970 to 40 per cent black today, one would suspect something rather odd and profoundly unnatural had been going on.

The past is another country, and the Chamber of Commerce Republicans gave it away. Reagan’s California no longer exists. And, if America as a whole takes on the demographics of California, then “the conservative movement” will no longer exist. That’s why, for many voters, re-asserting America’s borders is the first, necessary condition for anything else – and it took Trump to put that on the table.

  1. My Two Cents {rant}

I support Ted Cruz for President. I have never been a DonALL Thump fan as evidenced by the many videos that are now popping up with his previous positions on any number of issues.

Our entire political system is broken and corrupt, on both sides. Of the 535 members of Congress, I wouldn’t trust any more than maybe five of them. There is nobody in this entire administration that I would trust, except Director Comey…….period, and he’s on a life line with the Hillary situation.

Every part of our Government is broken and corrupt, our Military is in shambles, we are in the mist of a invasion with no ends in sight.

I have debated back and forth between supporting Ted Cruz or DonALL Thump. I have concerns with both of them, way less concerns with Cruz than Trump. There was never any doubt in my minds that the establishment gop was going to go after both of them if and when they caught on and the msm would be sitting in the wings just waiting to pile on when one of them became the nominee. Like they always do.

If Cruz became the nominee, would he have the assets to fight off the coming assault on him from the gopE, the dims and the media? If Trump were he would have that capability.

Trump has zeroed in on the total disgust of the American people. They are tired of electing people to do something in their interest only to roll over and do the opposite when they get to Washington. There is little or no differences between the two parties any longer.

In my opinion the best thing that could happen is Trump blow up the entire gopE guys and the party and let’s start anew. We have been electing alleged Conservatives for years now, the Reagan foot soldiers, the severe conservatives and the party loyalists. They have done nothing to Serve and Protect the U.S. Constitution or the American People. They have sat by and allowed this bastid uhbama to shred the Constitution and our Laws each and everyday and have done nothing to stop him, in fact the have provided assistance in helping him.

So someone needs to explain to me that if Trump is elected how much more damage he would do than the gopE republicans have done and allowed for the last 25 years and especially in the last seven.

When the curtain came down on the Reagan Administration, Conservatives have been adrift and lost their way. They all have claimed a spot on the Reagan Mantle but have not been close to continuing his policy and dream.

I have been a fan of National Review going back many years. They have lost their way around the same time period as the establishment gopE. I have never been a fan of Rich Lowery and always felt it was a mistake placing him in that position. Bill Kristol is no Irving. In fact the safest bet anybody can make is wait for Kristol to take a position on anything, and then take the opposite position. Guaranteed winner!

National Review has taken many positions on issues that I have disagreed with, while WFB was there and especially since. WFB favored turning over the Panama Canal and the legalization of certain drugs, I have never supported either one. They went after Gingrich when he ran last. This lynch mob that they put together for this issue was a big mistake in my opinion. I have never seen any establishment source go after someone in their own party like NR has done here.

Jeb has spent more than 20 million going after Marco {who I would never support} on issues that he himself {Jeb} supports. I’ve never seen anything like it. NR goes after Trump in a unprecedented way. The establishment gop and the Neo Conservatives seem very content with blowing up the entire system because they are witnessing the end of their control and power.

We are in uncharted territory here, if some resemblance of order and sanity doesn’t prevail, I’m not sure what it’s going to take to get our Country back. We are way past the verge of losing it, we are in a steady decline that we may not recover from. There is going to be one pivotal moment {a situation} that sparks a out and out revolt and uprising. It isn’t very far off in our future.

The U.S. Constitution is not a suicide pact and yet we have inflicted a thousand potential lethal cuts to ourselves. We are on a Death Watch, something needs to change and immediately.

  2. The establishment is actually starting to support “dealmaker” Donald over the rest because he’s starting to look inevitable, and they can not stand Cruz.

    Like

  3. It’s going to be interesting to see how the scraps are gathered and realigned after the dust settles and things start becoming more clear. Cruz is the ugly stepchild and hasn’t made any friends while in the Senate. In my opinion it’s what makes him so great.

Right on cue the nyslimes is now reporting that Mikey “The Nanny” Bloomers is seriously considering jumping in. No surprise there. I wonder if DeBlasio is available for the VP slot?

And not to be outdone Glenn Beck proclaims that he’ll vote for Sanders over Trump. Tom Ridge declared on Cavuto weeks ago that he would not vote for Trump and would consider sitting the election out and not vote.

    Loyalty pledges anyone?

    How ’bout: True values, anyone?
