GOP Candidate Jacob Turk (Mo-Dist 5) Advocates “Common Sense” Ebola Travel Restrictions

Monday night at a candidates forum in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Republican candidate for US Congress, Republican candidate for US Congress Jacob Turk (MO-dist. 5) advocated using “common sense” to deal with the Ebola outbreak.

“When people come back from these Ebola-infected countries, then we need to look at a quarantine,” Turk declared. “particularly cutting off non-nationals, non-citizens from those areas to travel to America would be a first step in the right direction.” He continued to say we shouldn’t be “issuing new visas right now until this virus is under control.”

A former Marine, himself, Turk came out strongly against using the US Marines to fight the disease overseas.

“I don’t think these Marines signed up to become doctors and nurses so they shouldn’t be sent over there,” he said. “They’re military men and women – they’re not physicians.”

He concluded by saying, “let’s make sure that it doesn’t cross our borders any more than it has, and take a common sense approach to those who would come with it to our country.”

It’s not known what Turk’s opponent, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver thinks about a travel ban – he was a no-show at the candidates forum, leaving his constituents in Lee’s Summit in the dark about his views on Ebola – and a whole host of other issues.

According to the Washington Post, two-thirds of those polled support travel restrictions on people entering the United States from the Ebola-stricken countries.
