Video: Frances Fox Piven Defends Herself On MSNBC, Gets A Little Tongue-tied

This is propaganda in its purest form. Grandma Piven knows the game well, and plays her victim card very competently – Beck plucked HER out of tens of  thousands of people – she wrote a “little article” 45 years ago, the “death threats” etc…  Alas, she gives the game away at the end when she starts down a forbidden road and then  abruptly stops…Watch her closely at the 4:07 mark.

Oops…I don’t think she was supposed to go there. Do you think she was wearing an earpiece, and someone told her to cheese it?

In her December 2010 Nation column, Piven wrote: “Local protests have to accumulate and spread — and become more disruptive — to create pressures on national politicians. An effective movement of the unemployed will have to look something like the strikes and riots that have spread across Greece. . . .” Given Piven’s strategic stance, it’s clear that she and The Nation are in fact calling for violence. Her denial of this lacks all credibility. Similarly, when The Nation’s editors defend Piven by referring to her support for “civil disobedience” and “street protest,” they are attempting to create the impression that Piven is a virtual disciple of Martin Luther King Jr., when in fact her longstanding strategy has little if anything to do with nonviolence.

Progressive radio host Amy Goodman recently invited Piven to appear on her show to speak about Beck and her other conservative critics. Goodman played an excerpt from my appearance on Beck’s show. There I noted Piven’s prominent role at the Socialist Scholars Conferences that Barack Obama attended in the 1980s. Commenting on my statement, Piven said that it was “crazy” to call her a socialist. This stunning denial flies in the face of clear evidence that Piven is, and has long been, one of America’s most prominent socialists. She is currently listed as an “Honorary Chair” of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a prestigious appointment bestowed on only the most esteemed, influential, and long-serving DSA leaders. Piven was elevated to the status of honorary chair in 2003, after years of service as a DSA vice chair. If Piven can’t be honest about her own socialism, how can we trust her claims about anything else? In Radical-in-Chief, I document the presence of intentionally stealthy socialists throughout the world of community organizing, many of them close colleagues and mentors of Barack Obama. But for Piven to deny her own socialism in the face of the wealth of public evidence to the contrary beats all I’ve ever seen.

  1. Exactly!
The next word out of her mouth was going to be ‘riot’.
And by the look on her face, (and O’Donnell’s),
someone was yelling in her ear,
“Shut up, shut up SHUT UP!”,
    a la Sister Mary Elephant.

  2. Not dementia. It does look as if she was told not to continue on that line of talk- earpiece? someone in the studio shaking his/her head? She did not finish the thought because it proves Beck’s point.

  3. They will try to play it as a “senior moment”, but she stopped so abruptly and had a look on her face like – wha? It really looked like she was receiving a shhhhhut up! message.

  5. What’s wrong with her exploring the question of why the unemployed and poor are not protesting? Demanding their FAIR SHARE.

    POWER TO THE PEOPLE.

  7. But Soros is an Int’l financier and does owns the democratic party. And Beck gets more death threats than anyone. This grandma is an old commie who is still calling for riots by the poor to demand things, even though marxism has been a proven failure over the last 45 years — she’s been debunked with the rest of them. That’s why the world is broke.

  8. Watched the vid and re-watched the part @ 4:10 several times.

Can’t see an earpiece, but it’s pretty obvious that someone told her to STFU. She was blabbing on and wondering WHY unemployed people were not protesting, not marching, rallying… Yea. Someone in the media told this overt socialist to STFU around 4:10. I think they had coached her so they could spin her as a victim to try and bring Glenn Beck down, but as we read her very words as recently as one or two months ago, it is OBVIOUS this woman had been coached to lie for this interview.

Piven has grown so comfortable in her university setting blathering on and on with her hatred for our Nation that she seems totally oblivious to the real world of hungry, despondent, hard working, decent people beyond her fortress-walls. Sheesh.

I have less contempt for her than I do the liberal media thugs pushing her into the limelight for their own purposes, it seems.

Thanks Deb. I’ve missed ya. Been kinda busy. Hugs.

  9. … and it’s rather comical that the libs seem almost angry that the unemployed workers are NOT cooperating with their liberal agenda by going out and protesting, marching, and rallying.

Wazza matter, Libs?!! You all pissed off that you’ve lost your ranks of pawns in your war against American values to the reality of their priorities of getting a job and putting food on the table?

  10. This woman and her behavior is BIZARRE ! These peoples denial of reality and twisting of their own words is shocking to me.
I wonder if this is how discerning people felt in Germany living under Hitler’s propaganda.

Trying to. Wish I could stop and enjoy life a bit more. But up to my neck in this stuff at several levels… community… the greater DFW area, and now at the State level.

Working on growing grassroots and finding more leaders so I can take a break. Hahaha. Yea. I’ll let you know how that works out.

Same here, but only *a little* less contempt. She was a willing player in this little charade.

This lifelong commie who has dedicated her life to collapsing our system doesn’t get a pass from me for her “senior moment”. But yeah, that sleazy host showed a total lack of respect for the useful idiots in his audience by putting this woman forward, knowing they won’t spend five minutes online looking into her past history.

Sadly, the average MSNBC drone won’t do that. They’re too comfortable with their biases.

  13. Wow. It’s pretty obvious that they shut her down, but what is more interesting is that she didn’t look to the camera often. I wonder if she lectures like that too…without actually looking at her students.

I’d like to think that she didn’t help herself much, but knowing the average MSNBC audience member, I’m thinking that this didn’t even flag for them.

Glad you brought that up BiW. I noticed that too. Eye contact demonstrates a willingness to be honest. I’m doing the math on that one. *snigger*

NiceDeb, I haven’t met Anita. I know of her. I know and admire Catherine Englebrecht and her True the Vote initiative with King Street Patriots, however. That’s some courage right there! I’ve spent time with her, and plan to help a team build that here in DFW.

I hadn’t thought of someone coaching her through an earpiece ! That Has to be it. Makes perfect sense.

  17. Someone definitely told her to shut up… Seemed like she was just going to mention her need for violence in some strategy is good ‘n’ stuff! Cause that’s what was in her own speech she was referencing!

  18. There are several wild leaps of reason and paranoid assumptions being made here in the analysis of the odd way in which Piven stopped mid-flow.

Nice Deb, you say “Given Piven’s strategic stance, it’s clear that she and The Nation are in fact calling for violence.”

It is unusual to see somebody stop mid-flow like that, so yes, it was odd and remarkable, but we don’t know what caused it. There is no suggestion that she had any intention to incite violence.

She calls people to demonstrate and disrupt, but she urges demonstrators to not be violent.

The Boston Tea Party, after which your movement was named, was intended as a non-violent protest. And although some windows were broken (or to put it literally, tea destroyed), violence was not the purpose of the action. So you can see that the massing of people does not necessarily have violent intention.

I am sure you would agree with that.

Nice Deb, I think you are confused by the notion of disruption.

The Boston Tea Party was disruptive, but it was not violent.

Violence can erupt at a disruptive demonstration (which is one very good reason not to carry a gun to a demonstration) but the intent of a demonstration is to be heard, not to be violent.

So I say you owe Piven an apology for your public slander.

I probably won’t read your responses as I don’t have time to get to this site often, but rest assured I do enjoy myself on my visits here.

  19. Brian, really?

#1 That was Stanley Kurtz I was quoting from NRO who said that, not me, although obviously I agree with him 100% or I wouldn’t have quoted him.

#2 Two minutes of research would bring you all the info you need to form an educated opinion about this woman, but you’re apparently too comfortable in your ignorance to do so. You want to pretend Piven has maybe said a couple of semi-controversial things in her decades long career, which includes helping to craft legislation during the Clinton years. Wrong.

#3 This is the type of rhetoric Francis Fox Piven is known for:

‘It is ok to use violence as long as it is a BIG part of your strategy’
