Anti-Police Protesters Failing To Win Hearts and Minds – But Give It Time…

Despite Calls For Restraimt, Protests Continue In NYC

Lefties always have an uphill battle trying to convince normal Americans that their causes are just because most people naturally recoil from their Marxist poison – at least at first. It takes years of non-stop propaganda with the help of the liberal media and entertainment industry for mainstream Americans to swallow the poison, and even then – they don’t get solid majorities. Prime examples – abortion, man-caused global warming, and gay marriage.

Now the noxious swill they’re trying to force down our throats has to do with “white privilege,” and the “national conversation” we’re supposed to be having about police brutality in black communities is designed to advance the notion that blacks – even today – are disadvantaged victims of racial bias. More redistribution of wealth and more reparations may be required to correct this ongoing injustice.

After plucking rare but politically convenient stories from the “nearly endless supply of sad events that occur daily in a nation of 315 million,” as John Hinderaker of Powerline put it, “an unholy alliance of activists and newspaper reporters and editors tries to distort our perception of reality by giving undue emphasis to them.”

Heather Mac Donald writes:

Police killings of blacks are an extremely rare feature of black life and are a minute fraction of black homicide deaths. The police could end all killings of civilians tomorrow and it would have no effect on the black homicide risk, which comes overwhelmingly from other blacks. In 2013, there were 6,261 black homicide victims in the U.S.—almost all killed by black civilians—resulting in a death risk in inner cities that is ten times higher for blacks than for whites. None of those killings triggered mass protests; they are deemed normal and beneath notice. The police, by contrast, according to published reports, kill roughly 200 blacks a year, most of them armed and dangerous, out of about 40 million police-civilian contacts a year. Blacks are in fact killed by police at a lower rate than their threat to officers would predict. In 2013, blacks made up to 42 percent of all cop killers whose race was known, even though blacks are only 13 percent of the nation’s population. The percentage of black suspects killed by the police nationally is 29 percent lower than the percentage of blacks mortally threatening them.

Meanwhile, the very real epidemics of black on black and black on white violence are essentially ignored by the media. The “national conversation” America should be having on race should begin with addressing the problems of long-term dependence on government, broken families, lack of (more specifically rejection of) education, gangs, crime, and the drug culture that destroy black communities.

But no. The national conversation the left  – and that includes our president and attorney general – wants us to have on race is about white privilege,  police brutality, and black victimization.

That’s a tough sell when their black “victims” all turn out to be criminals who resisted arrest and/or threatened  police officers – the latest poster boy actually pointing his gun at a cop.  They are literally asking us to protest the shooting of an armed black thug who was pointing his weapon at a police officer. I mean, come on.

(By the way, the word “thug” is not an inherently racist word. It has an actual definition that is race-neutral: THUG: a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer.” I’ll use it in a sentence:  “The 300 pound teenage thug strong-arm robbed a convenience store, pushing the smaller clerk around like a rag-doll.”

It does not apply to every black male, including black males who peacefully protest what they perceive to be police brutality. It applies to anyone – black or white – who engages in violent criminal behavior.)

When the truth isn’t convenient to the narrative,  narrative enhancements become necessary.  It wasn’t a gun in Berkeley Missouri, it was an iphone. In the Michael Brown case, he wasn’t a black thug who just robbed a convenience store, assaulted a cop, and was shot as he charged at him – he was a “gentle giant” who was surrendering with his arms up in the air and was gunned down by an evil, racist brute. In the Eric Garner case, an honest case can be made that excessive police force was used (it certainly looks so from the tape) –  but a case cannot be made that incident had anything to do with race. Because (for the millionth time) – the cop overseeing the arrest was a black female sergeant.

So after cherry picking “man-bites-dog” stories and lying about them, the shock troops of the organized left are mobilized to protest. Oh goodie.

And here’s where the uphill battle becomes a bit rougher for them. Because (just between you and me) left-wing shock troops are made up of repulsive cretins who repel normal, decent people. The truth can be sanitized by the media and entertainment industries in good time, but with instant news sources – like twitter and blogs – the unsanitized version gets out there first. And the protesters are currently doing things that cannot/will not win them friends or influence people.

For instance, demonstrators in Oakland, California, broke store windows and trashed a public Christmas tree during a Christmas march protesting police shootings.

The SFGate news website reported that the 50 protesters were  “largely peaceful”  but a few bad apples  “broke store windows in downtown Oakland late on Thursday, looted a liquor store and pulled ornaments and lights off the Christmas tree.”

If you read the comments at the Yahoo link, you’ll find no supporters of the “protesters” in Oakland – only people sick and tired of hearing about this crap.

This is what the “largely peaceful” march looked like:

You might ask why the “peaceful protesters” didn’t immediately leave the march and disassociate themselves from the vandals, instead on continuing to march on in tacit approval of it. You might also ask why the liberal media is always so quick point out the “mostly peaceful” nature of these left-wing protests even when they end up with broken windows and looted stores. It almost looks like they’re trying to shield their fellow travelers from criticism in order to protect their shared precious narrative.

Tea party protests, of course,  never got such preferential treatment. The MSM made a point of ferreting out the one or two questionable signs (out of thousands) in an attempt to smear the entire movement. There was never any violence at tea party rallies. There were never any arrests. And unlike their counterparts on the left – they never left a mess. Because the normal, decent people who make up the tea party aren’t  violent, abusive, hypocritical slobs like leftists are.

Here’s another example via Gateway Pundit of another narrative fail for the left: PROTESTERS PLAN MARCH & RALLY in Brooklyn During Funeral of Slain Officer Rafael Ramos:

“This is par for the course,” the Rev. Michael A. Walrond Jr. told protesters after a march through Harlem on Sunday, the day after the officers were killed. “You were called for such a time as this. Don’t get tired. Don’t get weary.”

Indeed, though some groups were willing to stand down, others balked. Along with the protest on Sunday, led by Justice League NYC, a demonstration was held on Tuesday along Fifth Avenue. Another protest is to take place in Brooklyn on Saturday, the day of the funeral for Officer Ramos.

Now even commie Mayor De Blasio is in the unenviable position of having to denounce his precious snowflake fellow travelers because he can see that their tactics aren’t helping “the cause.”

Despite Mayor Bill de Blasio’s pleas for a temporary truce as the city prepares to bury two slain police officers, hundreds of anti-police-brutality protesters took to the city’s streets last night—a move the mayor today called “deeply divisive.”

“Two families are in deep pain and our NYPD family is in mourning. As I have said, it’s deeply divisive to hold political protests during this period of remembrance,” Mr. de Blasio said in a statement today.

The mayor has repeatedly called on protesters to stand down after the brutal murder of police officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were gunned down by a man who posted online he was seeking revenge for the police-related deaths of unarmed black men Michael Brown and Eric Garner in Ferguson, Mo., and Staten Island, respectively.

Left-wing agitators never fail to appall normal, decent people when they are in the spotlight. Unlike cockroaches, who at least have the decency to scatter when the light’s turned on – leftists just keep being their gross, abhorrent selves.

But don’t worry  – their more sophisticated fellow travelers in the media and entertainment industry will sanitize the ugliness all in good time. They  will portray all the problems in black communities as someone else’s fault.

As always, the narrative that wins out will be the one that that does the most harm.

The Council Has Spoken!! The Watcher’s Council Results

https://i0.wp.com/www.crystalinks.com/IroquoisGathering.jpg

The Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and the results are in for this week’s Watcher’s Council match up.

But first, we have some important business to take care of. We have an important Occasion to celebrate, the birthday of our own Dave Schuler, The Glittering Eye.

It actually works out in a way that this week’s Council Results coincide with Boxing Day rather than Dave’s actual birthday, which falls on Christmas Day. This way, he doesn’t have to share his birthday party with any other holiday, and it gives us an extra day for celebration.

First, a suitable cake. On a previous occasion, we really enjoyed a double Dutch chocolate number with chocolate ganache icing and just a lil’ bit of rum for flavor, and it went over so well I decided to get two for this occasion…one with rum, one without.

I also picked out some chilled Veuve Cliquot to drink…brut, of course.

https://i0.wp.com/www.veuve-clicquot.com/sites/default/files/optimized/hist_sign-yellow.jpg

And we’ll also have a nice assortment of fruit juices and mineral water.

For those of you whom want something a little stronger, one of my faves..Talisker’s 18-year old Single Malt,a real charmer.

Dave and I go back, what..is it really ten years? He predates me on the Council, and I’ve never forgotten his first reaction when I came aboard. In those days, we didn’t vote on new members, the Watcher simply decided on his own, and Dave used to write little blerbs giving his own reaction to each Council member’s entry, something I wish he still did. At my debut, he wrote on his site to the effect that he had enjoyed New Sisyphus (the member I replaced) but was going to wait and see about this Joshuapundit guy. I hope he’s made up his mind about me!

Dave Schuler runs one of the best one man blogs out there. He remains very much the Council’s renaissance man, whose varied interests run the gamut from politics and world affairs, to opera, wine, economics, cooking, dogs, martial arts and a thousand other subjects. And he has a lot to say about all of them! Even more to his credit, he specializes in common sense, a quality today that’s not at all common nowadays.

In all the time I’ve known him, not only has he cheerfully put up with all my nonsense but he’s always been there whenever I’ve needed help and good advice. And I’ve never ceased to appreciate his clarity of thought, his ability to get to the heart of the matter, or our friendship.

And that’s the thing, really. You meet the most wonderful people blogging.

Happy Birthday, Dave, and many many more. And no worries..we’ve already alerted the Fire Department about all those candles.

Another brief note before we get down to business. Our dear friend and Council member Marion Algier of Ask Marion has been fighting a tough battle against cancer. She’s a real scrapper though, and I’m proud to say that based on a recent medical report she appears to be getting the upper hand, G-d willing!

Such fights are fairly expensive, however.

If any of you feel able to visit her site and drop some shekels in her PayPal tip jar, please do so. It would be a wonderful thing to do, especially at this time of year. And send her your prayers.

“Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas.” – President Ronald Reagan

“I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

“And in despair I bowed my head;
There is no peace on earth,” I said;
For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

“Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
the Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection. – Sir Winston Churchill

This week’s winning essay is my piece over at JoshuapunditWhat Christmas Really Means, And Why The Left Hates It .Here’s a slice:

In two days, Christians around the world will celebrate Christmas, the birthday of Jesus of Nazareth, called the Christ..or as I, a non-Christian sometimes respectfully refer to him, Rav Yussel ben-Yosef. For among other attributes, Jesus was also a learned rabbi.

While historical evidence points towards the actual birthday of Jesus being in the spring, the December 25th date – January 6th for Orthodox Christians – are the traditional days Christians celebrate.

It is a time of year when people in predominantly Christian countries are more expansive, more gentle and more at peace with each other. They smile more, and they let the little things go because it’s Christmas, a time of cheer and good will, a time for friends and family.

It is also a time when the secular Left unleashes savage attacks on the very nature of Christ and the holiday itself. Satanists demand the right to set up displays next to manger scenes, smarmy writers mock the traditions of Christmas and Christianity and atheists and Leftists go on the warpath with lawsuits designed to try and stop public religious displays of faith, especially Christian ones.

One writer whom I won’t link to even made the point in a very well-known far Left outlet that religion in general is ‘rapey’ (her word) and Christianity in particular because – wait for it- it teaches that G-d raped the Virgin Mary without her consent, since consent isn’t explicitly mentioned in Scripture. So of course, this is just another instance of the ‘Patriarchy’ in action.

Before I go on, let me point out that all of these attacks are permissible free speech, although there’s no doubt in my mind that if we were talking about Islam, they’d be a lot more circumspect.Or perhaps outright cowardly and hypocritical is a more accurate way to put it.

But if we get beyond the secular trapping and look at the real meaning of Christmas, it becomes obvious that all these attacks on Christianity have a distinct motivation. It becomes glaringly apparent why the Left does what it does.

Christmas is above all a time for Christians to celebrate a miracle of their faith, the birth of their Messiah, born in the humblest of surroundings but recognized by the Magi and generations of future Christians as Lord and Savior. To Christians, Jesus is whom they owe ultimate allegiance to, not to government or to secular power, but to heavenly power. If Jesus is their Lord, than no secular lord can be, and if Jesus is the way, the truth and the light, salvation comes from the Lord, not from Moscow, or Peking, or Washington DC, or any other seat of government.

The Founders themselves understood this quite well, that the unalienable rights they sought came from their Creator, not government, or an earthly king.

To the Left, this belief goes against everything they stand for. That’s why the Left needs so badly to to mock, attack and destroy it. And why all of us, even those of us whom are not Christians need to defend it.

You’ll find much more at the link.

In our non-Council category, the winner was Heather MacDonald’s fine piece at the City Journal The Big Lie of the Anti-Cop Left Turns Lethal submitted by The Watcher. It is simply one of the better things written so far about the current war by the Left against the police.

We hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas!

New York City’s Kommissar Bill de Blasio!!

The Noisy Room : Mayor Bill de Blasio for his faux sorrow and commiseration after the shooting of the two cops in New York this weekend.

After throwing the NYPD under the bus over Garner and dissing the attack on cops a week ago by seven protesters, he comes out and dares to show his face at the press conference for the execution style murders of two officers in New York yesterday. At the end of which, he broke into crappy Spanish. The police union has called for him to be barred from all police funerals for turning his back on the NYPD.

Turn about is fair play… the officers turned their backs on de Blasio at his press conference. When he showed up at the hospital where the two deceased cops were, with family, friends and comrades grieving, he tried to say he was one of them and was told by at least one officer he was not welcome or one of them and was told to leave. With all that blue blood on his hands, de Blasio should just resign and slink away. He’s a cowardly weasel that has brought Marxism, violence and murder to New York.

Ah yes, Mayor Bill De Blasio, an excellent example of what it looks like when the inmates take over the asylum. Even the stupidest, meanest banana republic dictator usually knows enough to remember to keep on the good side of the people keeping civil order, protecting him and his family and keeping the regime in power. Even the mayor’s old commie buddies the Sandinistas understood that much …but not Mayor de Blasio!

It takes real talent to be that stupid. I mean, the local stores complain about some ne’er do well with a huge rap sheet peddling illegal smokes and taking away their business, the cops some and tell him to leave, he refuses, he resists arrest and dies from a heart attack. A grand jury looks at the evidence, finds that the police did nothing wrong. And not only does the mayor side with the rioters against his own police force, he throws gasoline on the fire, perhaps even to the point of getting a couple of them killed. He even smirks in public about having what he and other racialists and cop-haters have called ‘the conversation’ about the dangers of ‘racist police’ with his own bi-racial son…the same kid who goes nowhere without an NYPD security blanket composed of police prepared to risk their lives to save his child!

There’s stupid, and then there’s pathetic. So Mayor de Blasio richly deserves his Golden Weasel.

Let’s have a nice hand for a couple of members of the NYPD’s union, The Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, who were nice enough to come down to pick up the mayor’s award for him, and not only that, they plan to customize it with some decorations, tributes and engraving of their own before they deliver it to his office!

Is that nice or what?

Well, there it is.

Check back next Tuesday to see who next week’s nominees for Weasel of the Week are!
