Firestorm Erupts Over Politically Incorrect Remark

Washington is abuzz about the latest faux pas from a certain somebody who should know better.

A powerful Senator isn’t pulling any punches over what he deems is a profoundly insensitive comment:

“I understand it was meant as self deprecating humor,” the Senator told ABC News, “but I would also say that there’s nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anyone with disabilities. And I would hope that NBC has that same attitude.”

The Senator said he appeared once on Leno’s show two years ago, and “I have no intention of returning.”

“He didn’t just cross the line. He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that  young people with learning disorders are having to deal with today in America. The notion that  young, mentally disabled men and women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It’s one that I’m not interested in supporting.”

PSYCHE!

Guess who that powerful Senator was? That was Obama two years ago, (slightly edited) talking about Don Imus’ nappy headed ho comment:

“I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus,” Obama told ABC News, “but I would also say that there’s nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude.”

Obama said he appeared once on Imus’ show two years ago, and “I have no intention of returning.”

Racial Slur Stirs Trouble for Shock Jock

Last week, Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, most of whom are African-American, as “nappy-headed hos.” He has since apologized for his remarks, and CBS and MSNBC suspended his show for two weeks.

“He didn’t just cross the line,” Obama said. “He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It’s one that I’m not interested in supporting.”

Though every major presidential candidate has decried the racist remarks, Obama is the first one to say Imus should lose his job for them.

If I remember right, Imus did indeed lose his job. It remains to be seen whether or not this unfortunate remark becomes more than just another small blip in the tsunami of FAIL that is the Obama Presidency.

Thanks to commenter Damiano at Ace of Spades Hq for the idea.

And yeah, I totally stole  “tsunami of FAIL”  from Jones in CO.

UPDATE:

Newsbusters reports that:

NYT’s web-posting concerning Obama’s “Tonight Show” appearance didn’t cover his Special Olympics faux pas. Ditto USA Today. And AP. And MSNBC.com.

From what I can tell, of the major outlets — not including blogs — only the Christian Science Monitor and FoxNews.com covered this.

However, Obama’s probably starting to regret the shabby treatment he’s given the Brits…

  2. Awww… The One called the Special Olympics Chairman to apologize… even before the clip aired- reports the MSM.

Funny how he wasn’t willing to accept Imus’ apology, when Imus personally drove to see the basketball team, on his own dime, to apologize to each player, their coaches and the staff.

If only we held our POTUS to equal standards as shock jocks. The way the MSM is treating this, you’d think they’d never heard of:
    – “Bitter… clinging to guns and religion”
    – Referring to the Governor of Alaska as the “Mayor of Wasilly”
    – “Nancy Reagan and her seances”
    – Giving the our country’s closet ally a set of worthless DVDs that are in the wrong region code
    – Mistranslated big red buttons
    – The follow up “waterhead” jokes on Leno (H/T to Cuffy Megs)

Heck, I would be happy if Obama held himself to his own standard and fired himself. Waiting for your resignation, oh enlightened one!

  3. I agree, on the “water head” comment. It was tacky of Leno to say it, but I can’t believe that they changed the transcript at NBC. I talked to several people, and they all thought Obama took it to mean that Leno was saying waterhead as if the dog WAS a waterhead.I think Obama said the dog would be “tripping” all over, rather than “dripping.” Maybe we all misunderstood, but here in the South, to call someone a waterhead is very derrogatory, and means someone retarded, or with water on the brain. Isn’t that well-known all over the country? The telegraph uk has some negative comments about Obama on Leno, and also about the DVDs that O gave Brown not working in Brown’s player. They don’t seem to love us, like we were told would happen. Hmmm.

  4. A friend of mine who was a huge obama supporter emailed me this morning about this. She was very upset with obama. Her son is autistic and participates in the Special Olympics. She said she literally cried over his remarks.

  5. I would normally let someone get away with a gaffe like this. People say stupid stuff all the time. I know I have. The thing is though, I want to give the liberals a taste of their own medicine. If Bush or Palin had said something like this, there would be an immediate call for their heads. Oh and the liberals are big on the PC stuff.
