Iranian Children Appeal To Amnesty International As Mother Faces Death By Stoning: “Please Help End This Nightmare”…

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani

The Daily Mail reports:

An Iranian woman faces death by stoning after being convicted of adultery.

Amnesty International yesterday called on the Iranian authorities to halt the imminent execution of mother-of-two Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and the hanging of another woman said to be a political activist.

Ashtiani was convicted of having an ‘illicit relationship’ with two men in May 2006 and received 99 lashes as her sentence.
Despite this, she has also been convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning.

The 43-year-old has retracted a ‘confession’ she said was made under duress.

Appealing for help to the international community, her daughter, Farideh, 16, and son, Sajad, 20, said yesterday: ‘Please help end this nightmare and do not let it turn into a reality. Help us save our mother.’

Under Iran’s Islamic penal code, adultery is punishable by stoning to death or flogging, while hanging is the penalty for murder and other crimes such as drug trafficking.

Stoning sentences were widely carried out after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, but have been rare in recent years.

Men killed in this way are buried to the waist, while women are buried deeper, to stop the stones hitting their breasts.

Thoughtful of them.

The Daily Mail also had a story in 2007 about a teenage girl that was stoned to death for “loving  the wrong man”. Her grisly murder was captured on film and put on the internet.

It’s so nice that Obama has reached out to the Mullahs, isn’t it? The sad fact of the matter is, as a man of the hard left, Obama is more comfortable with this  totalitarian barbarism than he would be with a free Iranian society, as he demonstrated with his non-support of the Iranian Green revolution, last year.

I can barely fathom the sort of barbaric bloodlust it takes to make stonings possible. How can people be  so cruel? Doesn’t it occur to folks that a just God would never sanction such a brutal, inhumane thing?

A movie, I’ve been conflicted about seeing is The Stoning of Soraya M. It’s a well acclaimed movie, ( it won second place at The Toronto Film Festival behind Slumdog Millionaire), and I had an opportunity to watch it at CPAC, but the very idea of stonings make me cringe. I’ve yet to watch it.

Here’s the trailer for the film:

In a world of secrecy, corruption and injustice, a single courageous voice can tell a true story that changes everything.

This is what lies at the heart of the emotionally charged experience of THE STONING OF SORAYA M. Based on an incredible true story, this powerful tale of a villages persecution of an innocent woman becomes both a daring act of witness and a compelling parable about mob rule. Who will join forces with the plot against her, who will surrender to the mob, and who will dare to stand up for whats right. It is both a classic fable of good and evil and an inspiring tribute to the many fighting against injustice around the world, THE STONING OF SORAYA M. was a rousing runner-up to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE as the Audience Favorite at the Toronto Film Festival.

Academy Award® nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG) stars in the heroic role of Zahra, an Iranian woman with a burning secret. When a journalist (Jim Caviezel, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, DÉJÀ VU) is stranded in her remote village, she takes a bold chance to reveal what the villagers will stop at nothing to keep hidden.

UPDATE:

Worldwide pressure rises against stoning; EU joins the call

Stoning is barbaric

Death by stoning is cruel and barbaric (Report, 3 July). About a dozen Iranian women, including Azar Bagheri, Mariam Ghorbanzadeh and Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, are now awaiting this punishment. As lawyers and academics, we respectfully ask the Iranian government to exercise mercy, pardon these women and repeal this law. Such penalties damage Iran in the eyes of the world: a change of law and policy would benefit the country as well as its citizens.

    Nice Deb,
Pope Ratzinger courageously addressed the very heart of the problem before he journeyed into the Lions den and dared them to kill him: in Islam, God can be irrational, and even unjust. This is totally alien to the teachings of Christ who taught that God would always act in a rational and reasonable way. Ratzinger has said that this is the most fundemental difference between Isalm and Christianity. Just God? Eh, not so much.
