Clinton Gaffe At Our Lady Of Guadalupe Shrine

Hillary should have brought her reset button with her so she could reset the  ignorant question she asked the priest,  Monsignor Diego Monroy Ponce in front of an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe inside the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City. As she laid flowers at the Our Lady Of Guadalupe Shrine, she looked up at the image of Our Lady on Juan Diego’s cloak, and asked, “Who painted it?”

Msgr. Ponce answered, “God”.

Doh!

Surely, not only Catholics are aware of the story behind Mexico’s most popular religious and cultural image?:

In 1531 a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City.
She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth.
She made a request for a church to be built on the site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the Church’s local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assorment of roses for the Bishop.
After complying to the Bishop’s request for a sign, She also left for us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native’s tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no sign of decay 477 years later and still defies all scientific explanations of its origin.

Even if this story is not well known outside of Catholic circles, shouldn’t she have familiarized herself with it before she visited the shrine? Asking who painted that image of the Virgin Mary on the tilma, is like asking who painted the image of Jesus on the Shroud of Turin.

My goodness.

To make matters worse, she admitted, this wasn’t even her first visit to the shrine:

Clinton then told Msgr. Monroy that she had previously visited the old Basilica in 1979, when the new one was still under construction.

After placing a bouquet of white flowers by the image, Mrs. Clinton went to the quemador –the open air area at the Basilica where the faithful light candles- and lit a green candle.

Leaving the basilica half an hour later, Mrs. Clinton told some of the Mexicans gathered outside to greet her, “you have a marvelous virgin!”

I can tell she was very affected by her encounter with the Protectress of the Unborn. Last night, Clinton received the highest award given by Planned Parenthood:

— the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the organization’s founder, a noted eugenicist. The award will be presented at a gala event in Houston, Texas.

  3. I can see that Secretary Clinton may offended a few religious nuts by asking who painted the picture, but it’s a perfectly reasonable question to which the answer (whatever it may turn out to be) is obviously not “God.”

  4. No, it wasn’t a perfectly reasonable question for a Sec. of State to ask while visiting the Shrine of the “patroness of the Americas”, at what’s considered by the natives to be the holiest spot in the western hemisphere. That is what we call, “cultural illiteracy” aka an embarrassing “gaffe”.

Why? Do you think God can’t do that? God created the whole world but can’t leave an image on a tilma, or keep the tilma, made of cactus fibre and known to decay in 15-20 years around for 400 years?

What’s it like to live without wonder?

The Tilma of Juan Diego has been examined by scientists who cannot explain what they see there, or how such an image can be so profoundly smooth and perfect on such a coarse fabric.

We don’t know everything. But clearly you think you do.

  6. I am thrilled that Clinton was anywhere NEAR the tilma. May God and the Blessed Mother continue to answer our prayers and try to help our leaders be renewed and change their hearts. I don’t think it was a coincidence that Clinton made an unexpected stop at the shrine. The Blessed Mother may be trying to call her. I pray that Clinton learned a little bit about the history of the tilma and will be open to letting the Blessed Mother work in her heart, as we pray she works in all our hearts.

  7. Donna, we all pray for our leaders, but so far Ms Clinton’s heart has been closed to God’s message of life. As, I mentioned in my post, she went out of her way to accept an award from Planned Parenthood – The MARGARET SANGER award, of all things, the very next day.

  10. Mina , the quesiton of whether God can do this or that doesn’t enter into it. My coffee tasted good this morning and I put this down to the fact that I selected high quaity beans and paid attention to brewing it. It isn’t necessary to frame the hypothesis that God made the coffee and implanted a false memory of making it in me.

Likewise with a painted picture. It is unnecessary to hypothesize that God painted it and in doing so gave it all the appearance of having been painted by a human.

“What’s it like to live without wonder?” I don’t know what that’s like. I ind considerable wonder in nature; I do not need to make up stories about miracles with coffee beans or paintings.

  12. While Clinton’s question demonstrates a lack of awareness, the adulation bestowed upon this image is getting pretty close to idol worship. Same with the Tilma of Juan Diego and the Shroud of Turin.

God created these images but a human held the paintbrush.

I don’t know about the Tilma, but that remains to be seen with the shroud. Scientists can’t determine how the image appeared.

At any rate, Catholics and other Christians don’t “worship” these images, they venerate them, as additional revelations of God.

  14. The Virgin of Guadalupe doesn´t have an explanation scientific, it´s a big Gift from God.
It is one of The Manifestation of The Love of God through The Virgin of Guadalupe.
Faith and Confindence, these are the tools more important in the way of God.
