Two Debate Coaches Demonstrate How Its Not Done

As every debater knows, the art of debate entails, logic, clarity, structure, time management, style, confidence, fluency, volume, and no ad hominems.

These two fail on everything except for confidence and volume. They get an A+ for volume:

Fort Hays University Debate Coach Bill Shanahan (the ponytail) gets extra bonus points for the mooning.

No, Just kidding. Actually he’s been fired for violating the university’s faculty code of ethics.

“Professor Shanahan’s conduct falls below the standard established to protect our university, its faculty, students and alumni,” Hammond said in the news release. “As a representative of FHSU, he had a duty of care that was seriously breached by his behavior.

“If the coach of one of our athletic teams became angry and ‘mooned’ officials, student athletes and fans during a sports event, he or she would no longer be a coach at Fort Hays State University. Standards for our debate program are certainly just as high.”

I should hope so.

Gun-Toting Granny Stops Thief

This is awesome:

85 year old Leda Smith came home from church on Sunday to find that her house had been broken into. She boldly went into the house to retrieve her handgun and accost the intruder.

“I saw him move by my keyboard near the wall but I just walked right on past him to the bedroom and got my gun,” Smith said, noting that she started keeping the .22-caliber revolver by her bed after a burglary at a neighboring home several weeks ago.

“I said, ‘What are you doing in my house?'” Smith said during an interview Monday with WPXI-TV, Channel 11 in Pittsburgh, a news partner with the Herald-Standard. “He just kept saying he didn’t do it.”

Smith ordered the teen to turn around and not to run and then had him pick up the telephone and dial 911.

She then ordered the boy to give her the telephone after placing the call and she told dispatchers about the intruder.

Officials from 911 stayed on the telephone with Smith as she had the boy lay facedown and spread-eagled on the floor.

Wow…I wonder if this woman have a background in law enforcement…I could see her leading a SWAT team.

“It was exciting,” Smith said of the incident. “I just hope I broke up the ring because they have been hitting a lot of places around here.”

Kudos to the gutsy Ms. Smith for a job well done.

Fox Refuses To Air Anti-Obama/Ayers Ad

What the heck? What’s the point of having good, hard hitting ads if stations aren’t going to air them?

In case you haven’t already seen it, the ad is awesome:

Sure, Obama spokesmen are calling the ad despicable, as expected…but why would a news agency have a problem with it? The truth is the truth. Did Fox give a reason for its refusal to run the ad? No. A Fox spokesman would not say why the network declined to run the ad, which was scheduled to air yesterday, and today in Michigan and Ohio.

Does Fox News really believe Obama when he says that Bill Ayers was “just a guy in the neighborhood” , just a guy he served on a board with?

Doesn’t this news agency keep up with the news?

The connection between the terrorist Ayers and Obama is fair game.

I’m disappointed in you, Fox News.

UPDATE:

Hey, Fox News says they love to hear your input:

“We Love to Hear From Our Viewers”!

Cool. Contact info here.

Let them know what you think of this.

Thanks for the idea, Joan.

UPDATE II:

An explanation:

Obama is threatening the 527 that created the ad, and pressuring TV stations not to air it.

UPDATE III:

“Coffee 260” tells me in the comment section that Fox is now running the ad, having watched it him/herself this afternoon.

I did some googling to confirm this, but haven’t been able to find anything on it, yet.

I did find that the liberal blogs are up in arms about Fox “Accidentally” airing the ad on the 22nd, which of course they had every right to do, but Fox “went against their principled stand”, the argument goes.

Only to the left would this craven decision be seen as “principled”.
