Cowardly Dems Flee Indiana; Cowardly Governor Signals To Repubs To Drop Right-To-Work Bill

Earlier today, IndyStar.com reported:

Seats on one side of the Indiana House were nearly empty today as House Democrats departed the the state rather than vote on anti-union legislation.

A source tells the Indianapolis Star that Democrats are headed to Illinois, though it was possible some also might go to Kentucky. They need to go to a state with a Democratic governor to avoid being taken into police custody and returned to Indiana.

The House came into session twice this morning, with only three of the 40 Democrats present. Those were needed to make a motion, and a seconding motion, for any procedural steps Democrats would want to take to ensure Republicans don’t do anything official without quorum.

With only 58 legislators present, there was no quorum present to do business. The House needs 67 of its members to be present.

Ed Morrissey asked:

At what point does the decision to hold democracy hostage transform from a localized example of petulance to a national strategy?

To which I would  add, ” and how would Dems respond if Republicans employed this strategy every time they disagreed with a bill?  Can liberals really be such short sighted, cowardly fools, or could the risk of upsetting the gravy train that’s kept them going for so many years, be causing  them to jump the shark?

But never fear, just when momentum and public opinion seems to be  going against the Dems,  there’s always some unprincipled, craven Republican around to enable their bad behavior – in this case, the Governor of Indiana, and Presidential contender, Mitch Daniels.

3:40 PM — Governor says time to dump labor bill

Gov. Mitch Daniels signaled this afternoon that Republicans should to drop the right-to-work bill that has brought the Indiana House to a standstill for two days and imperiled other measures.

Daniels told reporters this afternoon that he expects House Democrats will return to work if the bill dies. It would be unfortunate if other bills are caught up in the turmoil, he said.

He will not send out state police to corral the Democrats, the Republican governor said.

UM?

Looks like Daniels is calling a friggin’ truce on fiscal issues, too – and not serious about running for President.

Dude.

(Speechless).

UPDATE:

It gets worse…

Daniels Says, Legislators Running Away Is A “Perfectly Legitimate Part Of The Process”

UPDATE II:
After reading spirited NRO defense of Daniels, Fritzworth at AoSHQ asks: Mitch Daniels: Caving In or Ahead of the Game?

Sorry this fight fell on his lap when he has so much on his plate, already – but it did, and the correct response is to fight back – not placate  and excuse dishonorable Dems

Answer: Caving.

  1. What the frig, Mitch Daniels!

Of all the issues before you, you punt on this?

C’mon! I think it would be wise you put away any notion that you will be the Republican nominee for President. You have demonstrated that you have no backbone in your own state when it comes to fiscal crises so how can we expect you to take on the beast that is the federal government?

    FAIL!

  2. Daniels still has a little time to come around.

But if the legislature puts a bill up to him and he vetoes it because the Dems are hiding behind a stack of mattresses in a Cicero motel room, he will have taken himself out of any shot at a 2012 presidential nomination.

At least as a Republican. He might have a shot as a Democrat.

  3. I assume this means that Daniels isn’t planning on running for President. After this humiliation there’s no point in him even thinking about getting the nomination. He’s done!

  5. Congratulations Mitch, you made THE headline at Huffington Post. Your latest statement regarding the release of controls over collective bargaining has just cost you the Presidency if you had any chance at all.

People, this is the last thing we need right now with such a highly charged and necessary fight. Unless Mr. Daniel’s falls back, regroups his own mind and supports Scott Walker unequivocally 100% he has no chance in national politics.

There is no way we’re going to coalesce with this type of attitude from our own ranks. He has just set Walker and Kasich back embarrassingly which means he has set us, this whole party and the November elections back when we’re fighting of inches here.

Mr. Daniels, get comfy on the sidelines as usual while the adults, Messer’s Walker and Kasich show you what leadership looks like. Goodbye Mr. Daniels, this is one bell where you will not be able to recapture its ring..

  7. Good job, Governor Daniels. You’ve just winnowed down the field of Republican candidates for President in 2012!

Sorry, Bubba, I wouldn’t support your candidacy after this move. You’re not so smart, are you?

  10. Daniels is a jellyfish like the insufferable ‘what, me worry?’ Lugar, with his RINO spineless gutless beliefs nearly indistinguishable from the Demonrats. What happen’d to Mitch? Did someone buffalo him or is he making a cynical calculation? As for polls:
A poll of more than 200,000 WISCONSINITES yesterday by the Journal-Sentinel had a 70% majority supporting Gov. Walker. Besides, the ONLY poll that counts is the one taken last Nov. 2nd.

I guess when the Indonesian Imbecile said that elections have consequences, he meant only when Demonrats win.

  11. Unless Mitch Daniels is planning on running on the democratic ticket as I suspect that his chances of running on the Republican ticket for president are between slim and none. He just saved a lot of money on not having to do a presidential feasibility study…

  12. Daniels has done Republicans a favor by simplifying the 2012 nomination process.

If this process continues (Wisconsin, Indiana, maybe Ohio, and who knows who may yet join the hejira) we might be able to have a “virtual state” existing in the “real” (?) state of Illinois. How many virtual electoral votes might they have?
