President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” remark about business entrepreneurs touched a nerve on the Right, and sent liberal journalists and bloggers scrambling to explain away his gaffe by asserting that, “in context,” his statements weren’t bad at all.

While it is true that Obama’s remarks are frequently referred to in a short-hand manner, in their full form, his comments are just as insulting, if not more so. And no amount of media spin can make them otherwise.

As Washington Examiner columnist Philip Klein notes, “even if viewed in their full context, Obama’s comments downplay the accomplishments of successful small business owners and diminish their contributions to government.”

What’s good in the government comes from the people; what’s good in the people does not come from government.

But it’s abundantly clear that Obama believes there’s no such thing as a self-made man, no such creature as the lone genius (Jobs, or Thomas Edison) who transforms everyone’s life through the force of his vision.

The telegraph, the telephone, the phonograph, the light bulb, the MacBook, the iPhone and the iPad all disprove his thesis. Great inventions are most often conceived by private individuals, sitting alone in a room, not government bureaucrats.

And that’s why Obama’s “gaffe” could well become a focal point of the election — a sharp line of demarcation between a party that stands for collectivism and one that not only celebrates the individual but also gets out of his way.

The president’s been promising “fundamental transformation” of the country since 2008. Altering the relationship between citizen and state is certainly part of that.

Which is why Romney gets to the heart of the matter when he asks: “Do we believe in an America that is great because of government or do we believe in an America that is great because of free people allowed to pursue their dreams?”

The real “Regina” was Caroline Boss (now Caroline Grauman-Boss). That revelation is one of many in David Maraniss’s new biography, Barack Obama: The Story. Maraniss shows that Obama created “composite” or “compressed” characters, including girlfriends, in his memoir to conceal their identities, or as a literary device. Maraniss confirms that Obama’s “Regina” was, in fact, Boss, whom I dated from 1979 to 1981, when Obama was at Occidental. Maraniss confirms that she was close to Obama. But Maraniss also covers up Obama’s Marxist radicalism by casting Obama as more centrist than Boss or than his roommate, Hasan Chandoo (Maraniss 368).

The collegiate Obama was an ardent Marxist socialist extremist. I confronted young Obama’s naïve faith in an inevitable Communist revolution when he visited the San Francisco area during his Christmas break from Occidental College in 1980–at the Boss family’s home in Portola Valley, CA, a small city outside of suburban Palo Alto, south of San Francisco. I am pleased Maraniss–a Washington Post associate editor, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and the co-author of Tell Newt to Shut Up!–has provided a clear, compelling and independent verification of a key element of my story–namely, Obama’s visit to San Francisco with his left-wing friends: “During the Christmas break that year, Sohale Siddiqi, a friend of Hasan’s and Wahid’s who lived in New York, came out to visit…Obama had left on a road trip and ended up in San Francisco.” (Maraniss 367)

As of last week, the president had played 102 rounds of golf since he took office. According to White House reporter Keith Koffler, each golf outing takes about five hours. Using arithmetic — something apparently unfamiliar to Democrats, given their staunch refusal to pass a federal budget — Obama has spent about 510 hours golfing.

This compares to a total of “412 hours … in economic meetings or briefings of any kind”, according to a time study published by The Government Accountability Insititute (PDF).
