In New Orleans to speak at the RedState Gathering Friday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) says it’s going to take regular Americans rather than the Beltway elite to beat back Obamacare through the use of a continuing resolution which would exclude the health care restructuring plan from the federal budget.

“If the path is convincing Washington to defund Obamacare,” says Cruz, “there is no way to get it done.”

Cruz says there are two circumstances weighing in favor of a successful effort. First, that “the wheels are coming off” the president’s plan; Cruz notes that there is a growing bipartisan consensus that Obamacare isn’t going to work and cites Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) calling it a “train wreck” and the National Treasury Employees’ Union begging to be let out of its implementation as example of that concensus.

Second, he says, is the rise of the grassroots activist as a force in American politics.

“There is a tectonic shift happening,” Cruz says, noting that it was grassroots support from conservative activists in Texas which propelled him from two percent in initial polls in last year’s GOP Senate primary in Texas into first a runoff with establishment favorite Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and then to a 14-point primary win on the way to an easy general election victory. “The way Washington likes to make decisions is behind closed doors, with the elites deciding what’s good for everybody
else.

“But we’ve seen one way to defeat that is a tsunami of activity. Get overwhelming numbers of people involved, make the phones ring in Congressional offices and the Washington way collapses.”

Cruz says it isn’t easy, but when constituents speak in large numbers to Senators and Congressmen, they do listen.

And because he’s seen the power of the grassroots work, Cruz can confidently take a meat axe to Washington conventional wisdom which says that if there is to be a shutdown it would be a disaster for the GOP.

The Conversation: Issa Subpoenas Treasury for IRS Targeting Docs After Sharp Exchange With Werfel (Video)

Today, following a sharp exchange with Acting IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa issued a subpoena to Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew demanding more documents.

Via The Washington Examiner:

The California Republican accused the IRS of dragging its feet in response to committee requests for documents related to the panel’s investigation into the targeting of Tea Party and other conservative groups for special scrutiny — a charge Werfel denied.

During an Oversight subcommittee hearing, an agitated Issa said the IRS is “slow-rolling us.” “That’s not true,” Werfel countered. But Issa persisted, telling Werfel he was now going over his head and asking Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to respond to his requests.

“I’ve asked you for information; you’re not forthcoming,” Issa told Werfel. “The office of chief counsel, a politically appointed office, has been compromised.”

Federal officials testified about the U.S. Park Police’s missing weapons at a congressional hearing Friday morning.

Via The Washington Post:

The hearing stems from a report released by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of the Inspector General last month, where the Park Police were found to have lost track of thousands of handguns, rifles and machine guns.

The 2013 review began in part when an anonymous tipster said Park Police officers were improperly taking weapons home. Two such instances were discovered, along with many other instances of mismanagement, according to the report.

  1. It’s about time that Issa had some righteous indignation over how all of these Committees have been thwarted so far in their investigations. It really is disgraceful that they have been able to get away with it. I’ve been calling for subpoenas for a long time now. So now Issa is going to issue a subpoena to the Treasury Secretary Jack Lew for compliance . . . . . really?

Did he watch Lew’s last appearance on Fox News Sunday when Chris Wallace tried to hammer him every which way but Sunday on some answers to the IRS scandal? What makes Issa think he is all of a sudden gotten religion and is going to comply with Issa’s subpoena and release the flood of missing documents?

Is there any doubt as to why the repubics are getting circles ran around them in all of these investigations?
